Keep Your $500,000 GTA Online Stimulus, Rockstar — Just Fix the Game

No need to bribe us.

You have to respect Rockstar for releasing GTA Online as straight-up GTA Online and not some milksop hedge like “GTA Online Beta.” Lesser companies do that for months or years while taking your money to play; Rockstar launched Grand Theft Auto V‘s online mode weeks after the game came out and lets you access it at leisure for nothing.

Given that, I consider GTA Online an afterthought to the game’s $60 upfront outlay. GTA V, which is what most — if not all — players are dropping money to play, is a sprawling behemoth of a game. Say what you will about its existential import; if we tied what a company charged for this amount of content at this refinement level to the perceived consumer value of said product, the sticker tag price would rise like a ball hit by Chris Davis into the stratosphere.

So when GTA Online crashed and burned on October 1, launching to the lonely, plasticky sound of a zillion players click-click-clicking through errors like “Alert: Failed to join Job or Activity. Return to GTA Online” and “Alert: There has been an error joining a session,” I didn’t sweat it. Obamacare’s online exchange (ironically) launched on October 1 as well and also ran headlong into a hornet’s nest of accessibility problems. Massively anticipated products anyone can access at the click of a button tend to have capacity issues. It’s where we live, info-tech-wise, circa 2013.

But no, to help ease our pain, Rockstar says it’s going to plug $500,000 in GTA bucks (GTA$) into the accounts of “all who have played or will play Grand Theft Auto Online this month” — a “stimulus package,” if you will.

In order to keep the current worldwide in-game economy balanced, we will be providing this GTA$ to players via two deposits of $250,000. We will announce specific dates as soon as possible, but are currently hoping to be able to make the first deposit by the end of next week (after we’ve confirmed that issues causing game progress loss have been fixed) with the second installment to happen by the end of the month. For players who experienced cloud server errors, connection issues, and lost game progress and characters in these first days of GTA Online, we hope this GTA$ helps to facilitate a fresh start or makes your continued life in Los Santos and Blaine County extra sweet.

Great, thanks a bunch, Rockstar, but I don’t want the extra cash and never expected placation for your glitchy side-feature launch. Given GTA$’s centrality to the game, I’d rather earn it on the game’s terms, not yours. You’ve already fixed most of the online experience anyway. No need to bribe your base — though…if you’re really making another existentially nihilistic point, that every grumbler has their price, what can I say? High five.

QUIT COMPLAINING ABOUT NOT GETTING THE MONEY IN THE UPDATE! I WILL EXPLAIN!!!

I looked into the whole $500,000 stimulus and everyone keeps complaining about how there was an update today but they didn't get the money. The reason you didn't  money is because the update was made to fix a bug of some people losing there car and it was also to put in the coding so that they CAN put the money in. Which means now that you did the update ur gonna get on gta online some time soon and the money will just appear there.

name one great hit game that sold over 4 million copies the first day where the online was perfect? remember halo reach? that didn't work at all for like 48 hours.

this is a very pessimistic article considering the scale and the platform this game is working on. gta online is all i have ever wanted for this series and i lost a level 11 character and i was annoyed but it's been great since that. i'm level 40 now and haven't had problems. It's honestly multiplayer features and co op that keeps games interesting. i like the story but i haven't even able to complete the SP after online came out.  what the hell are you talking about side feature? do you have any idea how small of a percentage of people who actually finished gta IV was? but you still see videos being made about the multi which was far less expansive and immersive than GTA 5's multiplayer.

I'm not saying I agree with what the author is saying, BUT this article is under OPINION. So try not to bash this guy too bad for simply stating his OPINION.

The game is essentially fixed now, just a few more bugs to work out, I welcome the 500G because Ive lost all the money Ive made to people deciding to kill everyone they can.

Last few times i've played I've had trouble joining sessions with other players.  It always seems like I'm the only person playing online which of course isn't the case.  The first couple times i've played it was easy to walk through the city and interact with random people also online.  Now when I play it's like a ghost town.

So many things are wrong with this article.  If you had the least bit of perception and intuition you'd realize that GTA Online was actually the showrunner.  GTA V was more of a tutorial for the new mechanics to get people ready for the Online mode. The campaign felt rushed and you can tell by the fact that major areas of the map are never even used.  Such as the mountains, the full sized prison, and the giant underground subway/tunnel system.  The campaign feels rushed and it's obviously because most of their time was spent on GTA Online.  Not only does GTA Online come packed with a lot more realism but it also has more features.

Cops know when you're driving a stolen car,  bank withdrawal/deposit/transfers, calling other players on the phone, car insurance/coverage, ignition & remote bombs for cars, selling cars, creating your own missions, and eventually co-op heists.  That's just the tip of the iceberg.

GTA Online was in no way a "side feature" and in fact seems to be what they spent most of their time on.  After beating GTA V's main story I find myself not even playing it anymore.  All my time has been focused on GTA Online and I'm usually not into multiplayer.  I've had a great time playing with friends.  A lot more fun than I had with the main story.

I also find it ridiculous that you're complaining about a game that sold HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS of copies for having capacity issues with their FREE ONLINE experience.  Not to mention a game this huge running on severely outdated hardware.  This game is so massive in scale that it's a miracle that it's working as well as it is.  It took them literally 3 days or so to iron out the major bugs and now the game is running great.

I was only having problems the first day with character deletion and connecting to missions.  But a few days later it worked just fine and turns out the first character I ever made was actually saved.  I've been playing for weeks now and haven't run into any issues.  So you really need to realize that your connection just sucks and that Rockstar has done an amazing job.

GTA Online is amazingly fun and the only thing they need is to add the co-op heists.  They already removed the ability to replay missions so there's really no easy way to make a lot of money.  The $500,000 stimulus is much appreciated to me and I am confident Rockstar will add a LOT of content over the coming years.

tbh i had the disappearing character glitch happen to me about 3-4 times but than i started to go into the pause menu and selecting my save device ahead of time and than entering gta online and my character has stayed intact ever since...dont think it makes too much of a difference if you do this or not but i still have not lost my character...as for the stimulus package if you dont want it give the money away to a friend, or a crew member heck if you dont want it than you can give it to my character @(  Mesa4teensKevin  ) or go out into the world and commit suicide a couple hundred times js

The 500,000 was made for players who lose the characters from the cloud not saving.  since it launched i had to make ten characters in the same damn day. finally they had that update so i can keep one of them.  I really need the 500,000 to get  all of my goals reached. i have to get vehicles for the crew and get  a apartment . the biggest amount of money  i have gotten 33 thousand than bam ! all gone.  if your doing good in the game, good  for you .well for the rest of us  we need the money to get back on our feet.

wow... are you serious???   some of us don't buy games for the single play experience at all.  some of us expect the games we buy to work.  PERIOD. ESPECIALLY when we paid triple A prices
This means the multiplayer component too.
i only just beat the last of us on september 17th because i went STRAIGHT into the multiplayer when i bought it. STRAIGHT into the multiplayer.  i don't care about single player that much since i've spent the past twenty years single player.

TaylorDisic

Oh and not to mention the fact that they plan to sell in game cash for real cash. And if you consider how the scales in game have tipped that way, everything cost more, every job pays less, no heists, and between ammo, dieing, and armor you lose more then you make on missions till later on. Especially with dumb ppl running around killing everyone for $100 when dieing takes $2,000.

With all that in mind and seeing how the game is set up, and stuff like a cars turbos costing $50k or headlights for $5k, or a guns mag for $10k, don't you think it would leave a bad taste in customers mouths to create a game that takes all the money you make and tried to make you spend real cash to get more?

If they didn't pay for all the massive game save losses that lead to billions lost over all players, then it would look like they meant to especailly after seeing ppl figure out how to make money so quick. They have already patched the mission replay feature since on certain missions you could make a few hundred thousand in a few hours, more the higher mission level you get.

But you obviously don't have enough knowledge to speak about this and jumped into the deep end with no floaties. I'd retract my statment if I where you especially since the only ones that will agree with you are the ones that didn't lose anything and don't want just anybody to be able to drive the same car as them.... Which is selfish and pathetic.

Dear matt peckham,

What are you going on about, for me and the 90% of my friends that bought this game we where all anticipating this amazing thing R* said online would be. We all started off finding out it won't look near as good as the pictures/ screen shots we saw... Not to big of a deal, then we had to wait 2 weeks again not a huge deal.

But when we all got on and sat for hours trying to get on over and over, and finally when we get on we played for hours and hours,

I officially ruined my sleep schedule because I didn't want to turn it off and not be able to get back on. Just to see the next day i lost everything..

I make a new charecter very upset but still trying, I play for days and days finally getting enough cash for an apartment and Ferrari spent about $650,000 in game and the next day all gone!! Back in my old garage with my first crap car. Now I'm not one to through a controller at a t.v. Or to rage quit but oh boy was I very upset.

Same happened to several of my friends, one of them works at Boeing 120 hours a paycheck (not over exaggerating) he makes great money but doesn't have time to be playing games in the first place, let alone losing his save because R* wouldn't let us save on our storage devices it has to be on that stupid cloud I've hated since the idea first came out, I want my saves safe with me not in the "cloud" where Microsoft, and Rockstar both seem to have issues keeping up.

To say the least my friend was very upset he posted the game on eBay before hearing about this payback and now he is keeping it. So you are suggesting that rockstar Stops doing the one thing that is retaining their customers, smart one champ...

Maybe you haven't had the same experiences or you have time to waste in life, maybe you have no job other then writing and have plenty of time because all you do is write on the Internet all day pissing ppl off i dont know.  But In my perspective video games are all ready a waste of time but can be fun to relive the days of young.

But I will say I was pissed when I lost my whole character, then even more so when I lost a car I had $200k in, then when I lost $650k which was all I had ya I was pissed. And ya the least they could do is pay some of it back. And they don't have time to try and investigate every persons loss the most likely did an average per person loss and are sending it out,

So stop being a snob, stop talking on behalf of anyone but your self, and you know what actually just stop writing until you can learn how to express your self in the correct manner, saying things like they can keep the money.. See that's a no no, saying well in my personal opinion I wish they didn't, or say I feel they don't need to, then explain the reasons you personally feel this way. Not what you wrote, It was unprofessional and obviously upset ppl including my self. So either think negative, disagree, and be mad. Or learn a life lesson, better your self, and become more considerate of what you say and write. Words or text can be more powerful then your mothers "sticks and stones" rhyme  suggested. Everybody has an opinion some will agree with you some won't more then Likly the one who actually lost time and effort won't so don't ruin it for the ones who need it just because you don't want everybody to have money like a greedy wall street senior partner.

I agree with this writer, i hate the fact they are giving everybody 500K. this is because i worked for a long time dragging myself through missions to earn enough to buy a 150K apartment and a 155K car... and now everybody even the people still on level 5 and such will be able to buy this stuff and they don't deserve it. i looked forward to this game for a good couple of years and i loved the singleplayer, sure i would have liked online to have worked instantly however i had an amazing singleplayer that even after completion has tons to do. so stop whining and just be thankful they are fixing  the issues!

I purchased the game solely for GTA: Online. I discovered it's existence because it was a major selling point for GTAV and is even referenced on the back of the game cases (where it states multiplayer capabilities).

If it costs nothing, are you the one that's going to give me my refund?
Otherwise, hush - it's cost isn't "nothing" - it wasn't free.

Someone is high and mighty today. I Googled the GTA$ stimulus package and this is the first thing I see. A snobby prick writer saying "We don't want your money" Who are you speaking on behave of? Its not us I can tell you that much. The majority of people would like that 500k so don't mess it up for everyone else just because you want attention. Every major online game has problem... every single one. And Rockstar is not only fixing these issues as best as they can but they are offering an apology and 500k for in game money as compensation... that is a really nice jester and I have no problem accepting their apology and taking that 500k because I enjoy their game.

Wow, Matt must not have tried to play since launch.. All major online launches have problems. Played for the last week with zero problems.. AND I will gladly take the 500,000. I am sitting at 50k right now in game. Go play Plants vs Zombies Matt. I am sure you will be much happier.

Wow, someone woke up on the wrong side of the cushy writing job today.

Sometimes there's issues when starting up a completely new and ambitious project such as GTA Online.   It works fine now.   And I'm not sure where you got this information that most people only care about the single player story.  You clearly don't play with people online.  Hundreds of people who I've spoken with personally all love GTA Online and understand that this is the future of GTA.

Anyway, back to you being a snarky something-something and being paid to write a bunch of garbage.  I'll be enjoying the stimulus package.

There giving people 500,000$ and a fix for all the things together, for the stuff that went wrong, people lost their accounts, their properties. both or couldnt even get a connection.

This is a more easier way for them to compensate for people who lost their stuff instead of giving everyone the specific things they lost.. which would take longer cause then they would have to go through every log of each account and see what things they purchased and what was lost..

Kudos Rockstar, atleast they actually are trying to compensate for their mistake instead of saying "screw you", like other companies did. So stop whining, And be glad there fixing it asap , along with giving us some money compensation

ygebru
ygebru

it's not a bribe. People lost their accounts and they had a lot of money. if they could make another account and start with 500 k, it would probably be a decent compensation.

Rockstar is selling the GTA currency for Real U.S. dollars online where which the gamer can go and buy for use in GTa's world. If you're sugesting that that has no value, then you're dumb. Rockstar is making money on this and it's a marketing plan to make more money by selling future game money to the gamers that will keep playing only because they got that 500k as compensation.

this sounds like an article for a game where which the author hasn't played the game yet.. and is trying to garner reads.

@nemesis4670 Although I agree with you.... Its funny that you say the main game is essentially just a tutorial for the "real" game, online.

Then go on to say the "free online" experience.

Using your logic, the main game would be the free one, and the online is what we pay for :P

@nemesis4670

I totally felt the same way. I was amazed that the SP game suddenly finished when I had barely been to any of the sights in the map. The farms, the mountain peaks, the islands, the airport, the military base, etc. All barely even utilised.

I imagine they'll use them for DLC missions.

But, I totally agree, the SP campaign just ended so soon that it didn't really feel like I had done anything. Pretty much 3 main heists, and a couple random side missions and you've completed the game. None of the heists felt particularly challenging either. The final one was a breeze.

@enriquef29 I'm finally up to $100,000 after about 10-12 days of doing constant missions, robberies, survival matches and selling cars every chance I get. Would have around $200,00 if I hadn't of bought my garage. So about 20 days worth of playing = $200,000. I've seen players with close to a million, but dunno how they did it. Maybe if you have no job, no family or any kind of life so ever, you would have the time required to make some real money, but for the rest of us, it's gonna take a while. I really don't mind it all that much because it gives you a reason to keep playing and makes beating missions the first time out so important. If you fail more than twice, you're not gonna make a profit (if you're buying ammo and armor before each attempt, plus what you lose when you die). It took me about 5 tries to beat "Death From Above" on my own, so I lost way more than I won, but I'm stubborn and had to prove to myself that I could do it.

@enriquef29 That is your own damn fault for making ten characters.  When it gives you that warning you should have just played single player for a few hours.  That's what I did, and never had to make a second character.  I've been playing the same character that I made on launch day.

@bitchslap @keving4241 My guess... he's a writer, not a gamer. I'm willing to bet he doesn't even play GTA 5 outside of his job. I'm an amateur game reviewer for a website and even I know its not about the writer its about the game. It's Facts > Opinions and this is something he doesn't understand. Rockstar just got done walking on water... let them catch up before asking them to change that water into wine Mr. Peckham
