2014 is the year of…who knows, but things could get interesting in a hurry when the first Valve Steam Machines roll out: Engadget claims the following list comprises the initial batch of companies, Valve aside, who’ll offer systems based on Valve’s reference design.

In no particular order, we’ve got: iBuyPower and Digital Storm (both already known), Alienware, Falcon Northwest, iBuyPower, CyberPowerPC, Origin PC, Gigabyte, Materiel.net, Webhallen, Alternate, Next, Zotac and Scan Computers.

If you’re wondering what a Steam Machine is, see here, but in short, it’s Valve’s attempt to unsettle the living room space by shoehorning in a more open-ended platform (the PC, effectively) with a fascinating new controller explicitly designed to bridge the chasm between traditional gamepads and the keyboard-mouse paradigm.

Systems from the companies above should be on display at CES 2014 this week, says Engadget, though at what stage of completion is unclear. It’s also possible that the 14 companies listed (plus Valve, whose prototype box is already in the hands of 300 lucky beta testers) are just the beginning, and additional third party names could follow.
