If you’ve ever had trouble finding a smartphone with just the right specs and screen size, Motorola feels your pain.

Dennis Woodside, CEO of the Google-owned hardware maker, told TrustedReviews that customization on future Motorola phones will be more than just cosmetic:

“On the more premium side we’re pushing more customisation,” he told us. “Today you have colours and beginning of materials but you don’t have screen size and you don’t have functionality and we’re going to bring all that in the next year or so.”

Long before Motorola announced the Moto X, there were rumors that users might be able to customize the phone’s tech specs, but that idea was eventually debunked. Instead, Moto X buyers can go online and customize the phone’s back plate, accents, wallpaper and greeting. Motorola uses a plant in Fort Worth, Texas to assemble Moto X handsets and deliver them quickly to U.S. customers.

Letting people customize their phone’s functionality would presumably be trickier, and I’m skeptical that people would want to get too picky with features and tech specs. But I could see the allure of choosing between small, medium or large screen sizes. Although Woodside revealed no other details, the “next year or so” time frame could mean we’ll see this level of customization in the Moto X’s successor.
