Yesterday, mobile darling Instagram launched its Android app and snared one million downloads in 24 hours. The photo-based social juggernaut already boasts 30 million users who pour 5 million photos into the network every day – and with half of all smartphone users in the U.S. now using Android, don't expect Instagram's growth to stall. Instead, it'll be how the company handles its growth spurt that could affect the future of its success.

If you're reading this piece, published on a tech blog, you're probably sick of reading about the looming Timeline takeover. Another Zuckocalypse? Again? Yes, Facebook has a new redesign that it's rolling out for all users over the next few weeks. No, you don't have a choice about it. (Sorry.) There are reasons for Timeline other than Facebook's "another year, another profile" pattern. In this week's print issue of TIME, I look at what Timeline really means for the company: not just a design overhaul, but a fundamental change in strategy.

Goodreads is now the Netflix of book recommendations, or at least the company thinks so, seeing as its CEO Otis Chandler said exactly that in a press release announcing Goodreads’ new recommendation engine yesterday. It’s about time. Founded in 2006, Goodreads has gathered nearly six million users, a plump following for a niche social site, but while six million is a respectable number, the nature of Goodreads’ service requires these users to be fairly active to get much out of it. To grow the audience, Goodreads needed to appeal to a more passive audience. Some may call these people lazy. I prefer to think of them as busy. And yes, I’m one of them. (MORE: Is Bookish the New IMDB For Books?) On paper, I’m the perfect potential Goodreads user. I love literature. A large part of my career is social media. But still, I’ve never been completely sold on Goodreads. I wanted to like it. I wanted to love it, but after a few weeks, it all started to feel like work. Sure, it’s nice to see which books my trendy college friend is waxing on about this month, or that some of my high school friends are flying their “Twilight” flags proudly, but I knew this all from Facebook. Goodreads had become just one more thing I needed to do everyday. It was a great community, sure, but what about my right to be a perfectly lazy consumer? At the site’s inception, Goodreads prided itself on this idealistic human-to-human book discovery that the site offered. It was part of the “Aren’t you sick of robots telling you what you want?” digital boom. And it was appealing. The web felt like a community again – until we quickly realized that communities require a lot of upkeep. While peer recommendations are important, it’s hard to argue against math. As Pandora and Netflix gained notoriety for their algorithms, users flocked. What Goodreads needed was our information to sell ads. We became a little less inclined to give it to them without

Perhaps the most enticing bits of J.K. Rowling’s wizarding universe? The unbelievably awesome gadgets. From flying cars to portable alarm systems, the tech from the Harry Potter series is a serious lure to the franchise – not to mention one heck of a daydream instigator. Though our chance to live out our magical fantasy is dwindling with this week’s release of Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2, the last among the long-running Potter films, we’re still holding on tight to our wish list.

The voyeurs of social media would have you believe that people want to connect with other people on an instinctive level, that humans are purely social animals. And who can prove them wrong? Mark Zuckerberg and his peer wunderkind have built the framework to our digital connections and we’re lured in again and again. We fill them with our thoughts, our relationships, our cereal choices. And it makes Google nervous. Last week’s beta release of Google+ was a triumph for the company, whose history with social networking is one “almost” after another. Orkut, Google’s first social network was a huge success … in Brazil. Released in 2004, the service failed to materialize a strong user base domestically and eventually, it seemed like Google just tired of it. (LIST: 5 Failed Social Networks Even Worse Than MySpace) Meanwhile, Facebook thrived in Google’s blind spot. Born out of Harvard’s dorms, the site created a shadow web, a walled-up version of Internet activity that Google can’t read. Google+ is the company’s social fledgling designed to take on Facebook, or, to wipe the embarrassment off of its chin after previous failed attempts at entering the social stratosphere. Social media isn’t really something Google saw as a priority until Facebook locked them out. Facebook activity – user information, shares, Likes – can’t be indexed, archived, or even sold against by Google. The Internet as seen through Google is now only a piece of the greater web story – and the company is scared. In 2010, Facebook’s web consumption grew 69 percent, making the traditional, indexed Internet much less relevant. Within the last year, All Things Digital reported that Facebook’s share of users’ time online grew from one out of every 13 minutes of use in the U.S., to one out of every eight. This took more than half a billion hours of use (more than 800 lifetimes) away from outside sites like Google. Ben Elowitz, founder and CEO of Wetpaint describes it well: “And here’s what’s different when you connect people, as opposed to pages:

Pick your sides. The lines have been drawn. During Monday’s World Wide Developers Conference, Apple announced a complete integration with Twitter for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users. (See here for more from the WWDC announcement.) Users will be able to use a single login for Twitter that will work across Camera, Photo and other apps for the ability to tweet directly from these functions. It’ll also allow for easy tweeting directly from Maps, Safari pages and YouTube. Even your contacts will get the Twitter treatment, as photos from Twitter can be imported there, too. These features will get a big round of applause from iPhone users, yes, but they’ll also reinforce Twitter’s continued attack on third-party photo clients now that users will be able to tweet directly from their iPhone’s camera. Now, Microsoft owns a piece of Facebook so those eager for a similar feature between Apple and Zuck will likely be left waiting for quite a while. Besides, with these sparring social networks teaming up with dueling tech giants, alliances have been formed. Microbook vs. Twapple? Facrosoft vs. Appter? Eh, we’ll work on it.
A new survey by the Pew Research Center released today tells us a little more about the Twitter demographic, though most of it isn’t all that surprising. 13% of online adults in the U.S. use Twitter, up from 8% in 2010. 25% of African Americans online are on Twitter and 19% of Hispanics online are also users. Though they’re the second largest group on Twitter, Latinos are largely regarded as social media trailblazers, embracing digital technology at faster and faster speeds. Earlier this year, online marketing company BIG Research reported that 54.2% of Hispanics online regularly use Facebook, beating out blacks at 47.7% and whites at 43%. Latinos are even the largest group on location-based services Foursquare and Gowalla, with 10% of all Hispanics online “checking in” to their frequent haunts. In January, Lance Rios, the founder of the largest Facebook page for Latinos, Being Latino, told Fox News that it’s Latino culture that lends itself perfectly to social networking sites. “Do Latinos enjoy socializing? Absolutely. You can’t tell me anyone parties harder than Latinos, we’re the most social people on earth!” Also notable (as well as completely expected) was that growth in Twitter usership by 25- to 44-year-olds has increased, which could make for slightly cooler 30 and 40 somethings. And nearly half of all Twitter users told surveyors they accessed the service with their phones. Technology, you guys. It might just catch on.

Attention, humanity: We seem to be suffering from an acute case of stupidity. There’s a viral misconception making its way through our Twitter accounts and Facebook profiles and injecting itself into our brains. And it’s leading those infected to believe these social sites are looking out for us. Yesterday, we wondered if Twitter should actually hand over user information to officials when it’s subpoenaed. The day before, a report that even Facebook content marked “Friends-Only” could be used against you in court sent us spiraling into rants about the company’s lack of integrity on issues of user privacy. (The horror!) Well, Facebook’s integrity isn’t on today’s discussion menu. But yours is. There will never be an easier way to break this to you other than to just say it: Facebook is not your friend. It’s a business. Repeat this to yourself until it begins to sink deep within in your social-loving brain cells. “Facebook is not your friend. It’s a business.” Laws on Internet activity and speech are just beginning to manifest in court, and nine times out of ten, companies will comply with authorities. (Yes, this means handing over your account’s info.) Some rulings have required Facebook to turn over user password information, other courts have thrown out similar requests. It’s all the more reason to consider what you post online fair game inside our legal system. Of course, when I say “Facebook,” I really mean every social media site you’ve hitched to your digital identity: Twitter, LinkedIn, Foursquare, etc. Facebook seems to take the brunt of the backlash because of its size, but that hasn’t changed our silly new idea that all of these companies have our best interests in mind. They don’t. They’re businesses. They want our personal information to dangle in front of advertisers. And no, Facebook isn’t inherently evil for not really giving a damn about you. It’s business. The problem is that this reality doesn’t fit our modern consumer expectations, which, some would argue could be described as profound laziness. We’re living in the

In January, Wired noted that “Twitter beta-tested a spine.” During the height of the WikiLeaks bruhaha, the U.S. government slapped the company with a court order, demanding user information of a few of the key WikiLeaks conspirators, including Pfc. Bradley Manning and Julian Assange. Instead of coughing up the information (mainly e-mail & IP addresses) without complaint, Twitter challenged the order. It seemed like a noble stance, a little audacious even. Popular tech companies who stick up for their users send the web-o-sphere into a fist-pumping frenzy as they Fight The Man, man. And Twitter had just joined the resistance. They won’t let the U.S. government just take their users information. No way. So what happens when those users are terrorists? Twitter’s policy states that they’ll notify a user before responding to a subpoena unless a gag order prohibiting notification is in place, which was the case with WikiLeaks in January. And they did it anyway. Now that it seems like at a Taliban member account has been discovered on the site, will Twitter stand its ground on user rights? What responsibilities do companies have to join the fight against terrorism, if any? The site’s privacy policy states that the company will disclose user information if they believe that “it is reasonably necessary to comply with a law, regulation or legal request; to protect the safety of any person; to address fraud, security or technical issues; or to protect Twitter’s rights or property.” Will Twitter ever become CIA informants? My guess is no, but this saga will get interesting if they can help track down a terrorist or two. Though seeing how easy it is to fake or mask an IP address, the information linked to the account would most likely be a proxy. Still, we’ll want to wait and see if that spine has stuck around.

Get your summer reading list ready, a new books site, Bookish, will launch on Labor Day. The site promises to be part content, part retailer and part recommendation engine—a unique literary web cocktail. Backed by publishing bigwigs like Simon & Schuster, the Hachette Book Group and Penguin—who envision this latest attempt to create the world’s greatest online book club/bookstore as the be-all, end-all—it’s pretty much the latest in a long line of online book hubs. The difference here is that with the support of three major houses, it’s clear they think this one has a shot. And so do users. While there are plenty of candidates, I don’t believe we’ve really seen the best of what literature has to offer the online community. Even Goodreads–the still growing-like-a-web-weed social reading site—has its problems. It’s gaining about 100,000 new users a month, but there have been complaints from authors and members alike for things like reviews posted for books that haven’t been written, and ‘tricked ya!’ features that prompt users to spam every contact in their address book. When it comes to a reader’s online experience, they’re still searching. Which is exactly why #Bookish has been trending on Twitter all morning. This is still a race to be won. The site itself will be a mix of social and editorial content, set to inform readers about upcoming books and deliver updates about favorite authors. Headed by Paulo Lemgruber, who ran the digital side of Comcast, Bookish hopes to be the IMDB of the book world, complete with breaking news, interviews, excerpts and reviews, Lemgruber told Publisher’s Weekly. He also promised the site would run independent of publisher influence, despite backing by three major publishing houses. Users will see book recommends based on the information they input, i.e. the more information you surrender, the more ostensibly spot-on the recommendation engine and “personalized” ads. Though nothing’s been divulged about the recommendation algorithm itself, the announcement did include news of the AOL Huffington Post Media Group’s involvement as the ad sales team. Let’s face it: Star Wars Day is an Internet holiday, something to distract us between water cooler breaks and office memos, but it’s joyous nonetheless.
At the news that terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden had been killed by U.S. forces, Twitter erupted with posts. The news itself has roots in the microblog, as one of the first public declarations of bin Laden’s death was pushed out in under 140 characters by Navy Reserve intel officer Keith Urbahn. “So I’m told by a reputable person they have killed Osama Bin Laden. Hot damn.” Cue the frenzy you’re seeing now. But as the conversation swelled, so did Twitter’s numbers. According to the company, users fired out messages at an average rate of 3,440 TPS – that’s tweets per second – between 10:45 p.m. and 2:20 a.m. ET. At its peak, users clocked in at upwards of 5,100 TPS, the highest rate of sustained tweeting in history. Tweet on that, Bieber.

During Monday’s Pulitzer announcement, the Internet was a frenzied mix of Google searches for “Goon Squad,” links to moving photos and “WTF?” remarks about the vacant spot in the winners list in the Breaking News category, the first time in history the award wasn’t given. That night, Poynter revealed the Pulitzer Board’s reason for the decision not to name a winner: Apparently, no consensus could be reached among Pulitzer jurors, though three finalists were up for consideration. The Chicago Tribune, The Miami Herald in partnership with El Nuevo Herald and the The Tennessean were all nominated for the award, but none of the entries could be selected as a stand out in accordance of the new rules of consideration. Why is it that in a year that included breaking news stories of the earthquake in Haiti and the Gulf oil spill, that no recipient could be named? Because our breaking news appetites have evolved past traditional coverage of live events. By design, only newspapers and their web sites are eligible for the Pulitzer Prize. The specifications of the award, as noted by the Pulitzer Organization: “For a distinguished example of local reporting of breaking news, with special emphasis on the speed and accuracy of the initial coverage, using any available journalistic tool, including text reporting, videos, databases, multimedia or interactive presentations or any combination of those formats, in print or online or both, Ten thousand dollars ($10,000).” This means even media credentialed reporters like NPR’s Andy Carvin, who has been tweeting news and updates relentlessly since the beginning of the Egyptian revolution, are glossed over in favor of traditional newspaper coverage. (Good for the continued spotlight on newspapers, but bad for the fast changing landscape of news.) It’s this antiquated rule book that will lessen the value of the award over time. So why is it just so hard for the Pulitzer Board to determine a winner in the breaking news category? Because most of the time, the people breaking news aren’t using newsprint to deliver. After the earthquake struck

Well, hate’s a strong word. I don’t hate The Mary Sue. But gender-based sites make me itch. Truth is, Internet culture has evolved way past the gender divide. Aside from the occasional idiot smashing out “Tits! Tits! Tits!” to express the insane awesomeness level of a new gadget, I don’t encounter a high volume of girl-o-phobia in the online geek world. What I fear is a far more insidious attitude: the assumption that women just aren’t interested in technology. (More on Techland: Wired vs. Women: Too Much Objectification in Tech?) Unfortunately, this puts The Mary Sue directly in the path of my skepticism tractor beam. In my experience, I’ve found “Geek for Girls!” sites to be little more than a tortured search for a girly angle on issues that have nothing to do with gender. For most lady-geek blogs, the content is nerdy, sure, but packaged in “pink.” Why? The practice is historical. Institutional. A whole set of -al’s. This isn’t anything new. In 1923, the A.C. Gilbert Co. released the first of its iconic chemistry sets, marketed exclusively to boys. It took 30 years for the toymakers to acknowledge that girls might want to play scientist too, and so Gilbert released the Lab Technician Set For Girls. Wait. Lab technician? Yes, inside the stereotype-laden little pink box were all the instructions young girls needed to assume “assistant status” during playtime. Bigoted? A bit. But the idea it spawned created more lasting harm: “Science must be specially marketed for girls to take interest.” That’s why I take issue with editor Susana Polo, a former assistant editor of The Mary Sue’s sibling-site Geekosystem, when she writes “I have never met a geek girl who was even halfway interested in almost anything Cosmopolitan had to say. We were too busy reading Cicada and Popular Science when we were the age that Teen Magazine wanted our attention. I’ve rarely seen a ‘women’s’ site that seemed to report on much that I was half-way interested in.” (More on Techland: The Felicia Day Interview) She’s

The new Facebook “Like” settings have changed, triggering the always-dependable user panic we’ve seen from previous Facebook alterations like “Privacy-Gate” or the not-to-be-underestimated “News Feed Revolt.” This time, change comes to the little blue thumb. (More on Techland: Facebook Adds “Civil Union” To Its Relationship Status Options) Now, anything “Liked” will plant itself onto users’ Facebook walls as embedded posts, thumbnail image and all. Previously, anything “liked” was shown as a part of Recent Activity – a small, nearly unnoticeable gray line of text. As someone who spends her day promoting TIME’s content on our various social outlets, my first reaction to the change was, “Good for us.” Each time someone “likes” a TIME piece, it’ll make a prominent appearance in the News Feed of their friends. But what’s good for companies and media outlets isn’t always pleasing to the collective body of personal users – and more than this new retweet button (Come on, that’s exactly what it is), I think users are stung by the fact that Facebook continues to pull a fast one over on them, all to the benefit of those who want to use the platform to make money. And because we’re so used to doling out “Likes” as arbitrary compliments, it’s unlikely that enough people will stop “liking” to force Facebook to retreat the decision. Sorry, dissenters.

Yesterday, Twitter restored access to a few of UberMedia’s previously banned apps. UberSocial and Twidroyd for Blackberry were among two of UberMedia’s Twitter clients that were shut down Friday for policy violations. “We’ve given the developers of twidroyd and UberSocial for Blackberry (formerly UberTwitter) access to the Twitter API again. Our initial review indicates that steps have been taken to remedy the violations for these applications,” Twitter said in a blog post. “When the developer updates twidroyd and Ubersocial, you’ll be able to download their updates to access Tweets again on these applications.” Still no word on UberMedia’s iPhone app, which was also taken offline Friday.

Today, Facebook relationship statuses made strides for gay rights by including civil union and domestic partnership as relationship status options. Done with the consultation of national LGBT and human rights organizations, the changes are reflected in the profiles of users in North America, France, the U.K. and Australia – a mini-landmark for activists. (More on Techland: Google Search Goes Social With Twitter, Flickr) “Facebook has always been an empowering place for gay people–it’s a place you can be yourself in relative safety,” Richard Socarides, president of Equality Matters and former gay rights advisor to president Bill Clinton, told the Huffington Post.”This is a natural progression of that. In most places, gay Americans can’t yet marry but they may be able to formalize their relationship short of marriage. This change reflects that reality. Well done.” (More on NewsFeed: President Obama ‘Friends’ Mark Zuckerberg) Previous relationship options included single, in a relationship, engaged, married, it’s complicated, in an open relationship, widowed, separated and divorced. Facebook has yet to comment on the change.
