Not to beat my own drum, but I consider myself a pretty good son. I visit my childhood home as much as possible, I call my mother at least once a week, and I always keep my parents on top of the latest technology. Which is why when I first got my hands on the T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide, hitting stores in July, my thoughts turned to my mom. Bless her, she’s still rocking an old Samsung flip phone. It’s simplistic, and for her, comfortable. She can call and text, and hey, she’s OK with those basic functions. But Mom, I love ya, and it’s time to introduce you to the smartphone generation. Indeed, the MyTouch 4G Slide would look great in any woman’s hand. The beaming 3.7-inch screen leaves no excuse for squinting eyes. The display is bright and colorful, a standout gem for those accustomed to much smaller. But the real eye-catcher is the phone’s sleek body. Available in just two colors, T-Mobile has done away with the cheesy colors of past MyTouch generations. You can’t get this in red or purple, but instead, you can choose a classy khaki color which, as the T-Mobile p.r. rep proudly highlighted to this clueless reporter, can match well with your belt or shoes. I don’t go around making sure my outfit is color-coordinated with my mobile device but all snark aside, I do see the appeal for a fashion-savvy person. It’s an innovative color that rarely appears in a phone, and the matching potential is sure to steer some purchases. (LIST: Stay Connected While Traveling Abroad) Alright, so I’ve highlighted the female-friendly aspects of the phone. But that’s not to say it isn’t manly. The camera inside is a marvel, perfect for the family photographer looking to ditch the old point-and-shoot (we always lose the pesky charger, anyway). While smartphones are a long way from becoming dedicated photo devices, the MyTouch 4G makes great strides in this arena, boasting an 8-megapixel sensor and some slick new features to strip away

Digital scribes, rejoice! The classic line of notebooks (the paper kind, that is) gets a modern twist with an upcoming iPhone app. It may not be as satisfying as pressing ink to iconic lined parchment, but at least you’ll feel like you’ve joined the modern era. Moleskine’s app–currently pending Apple’s approval and due out released later this week–is your standard digital note-taking space beckoning you to fill it with musings and rumination. But wait, how’s that different from Apple’s Notes app or something like Evernote? Why would you devote precious screen real estate to Moleskine’s nascent angle on the touchscreen world? For starters, you’ll be able to abandon Apple’s harsh yellow pages for Moleskine’s easygoing cream-colored writing space. And you can join the ranks of the notebook’s historic lovers, Vincent Van Gogh and Pablo Picasso – proudly touted by the company in each journal they sell – who used their Moleskines as a sketchbook and doodle pad. The app also allows you to draw freehand, so whether you’re on an iPhone or iPad, you can use it just as you would pen and paper (hey, you never know when your next masterpiece will come to mind). And while his laconic style means he probably wouldn’t scribble much, who knows–were Hemingway alive, even he might want one. More on TIME.com: See Moleskines on our list of grad gifts.
Call it an easy pill to swallow. German researchers have created the world’s tiniest camera for medical use. Barely larger than a grain of salt, the camera is almost too small to see with the naked eye. But for taking pictures of our innards, what could be better? Scientists at Berlin’s Fraunhofer Institute developed the diminutive camera, which measures 1 x 1 x 1.5 millimeters, to strike the necessary balance between picture quality and cost. They developed a manufacturing method to mass-produce the cameras and control costs, as current production techniques for medical cameras require intense, one-off attention. Fraunhofer can produce 28,000 of the salt-sized devices in one go, substantially reducing costs. Now only if our doctors wanted to charge less. And because good things do indeed come in small packages, the camera’s quality is no DSLR, but it’s certainly good enough to take snapshots inside the human body. Researchers note the photo resolution as 250 x 250, with 62,500 total pixels per shot at 44 frames per second. Fraunhofer’s invention, unlike other medical-use cameras, can be disposed after it passes through one’s body. Good riddance! The word endoscopy makes us cringe as much as the next guy, but with a camera this tiny, maybe – just maybe – we’d be ok with it.
The question’s becoming as hackneyed as holding a piece of newsprint in your hands: How do you monetize online journalism while keeping your readership? Enter the New York Times’, whose paywall just went up March 28th to convince online loyalists to shell out cash for a look at the Gray Lady. The New Yorker is also testing out a wall for its content, but one that curiously eschews cash. One of their recent articles just went up behind a “Like” wall on Facebook, requiring a simple (if soul-sucking) click to access a 12,000-word Jonathan Franzen piece. In the “Fans Only” section on their Facebook page, The New Yorker displays a teaser of Franzen’s piece, beckoning the reader to click the blue thumbs-up in order to read the full text of the author’s journey to the South Pacific island of Alejandro Selkirk to reflect on the passing of author David Foster Wallace. Depending on your vantage, Facebook clicks can be even more lucrative than cash in hand. The New Yorker gains valuable demographic insight from the article’s “Likers.” The magazine can gauge exactly who’s reading their site using Facebook Insights, part of the administrative section of any fan page, which breaks down “Likes” into age, gender, location, referral source, and how many people the page was shared with. These numbers are honey-gold to The New Yorker’s website and magazine advertisers. Demographics aside, The New Yorker can bank on the power of the Internet. After a user “Likes” the piece, it’s shared with all that person’s friends, at which point they’ll be compelled to click through, “Like” the piece themselves, and perpetuate the cycle. And “Likers” will see any new New Yorker content pop up on their walls, building engagement and their likelihood of returning. As they say, “Mo’ money!” The “Like” wall turns out to be a model print media swiped from the recording industry. Lil Wayne and Jennifer Lopez have each put up “Like” walls for their new singles, requiring adoring fans prove their online adulation before getting a musical taste.

While T-Mobile has been shockingly mum about the much-buzzed launch date of the Sidekick 4G, Radio Shack may have spilled the proverbial beans. Posting on its Twitter last Thursday, the retailer joyously proclaimed the next iteration of the Sidekick would hit its shelves on Wednesday, April 20th. All we’ve heard so far is that the new Android-powered Sidekick will emerge “in the spring.” The curious tweet emerged the day before April Fools’, leading many to question the validity of the announcement. Wonder no more–a Radio Shack rep confirmed the April 20th launch date with Techland Monday afternoon. With a specific date in our minds, we finally have something tangible to look forward to – in addition, of course, to the phone itself, which will feature 4G speeds, rounded design, and a touch screen, all rolled into its iconic “pop-tilt” shell. The April launch date gives Sidekick loyalists the grieving time they need to break free from the clutches of their beloved but soon-to-be-deceased devices. T-Mobile announced they’ll be scrapping the data service to the original Sidekicks, provided by Danger, at the end of May. Users that are married to their Sidekicks will have the opportunity to upgrade with ample time to spare. And it appears T-Mobile is going for a full shelf refresh that same Wednesday. Also rumored to be released on the 20th are the spiffy LG G-Slate tablet, a 3D-capable device with a hefty 8.9-inch screen, and the dual-core, Android-running LG G2x phone. Will the new-and-improved Sidekick shine despite these other souped-up releases? Perhaps the real question is: Can the device reclaim its former haute couture status among celebs in Hollywood?

The Playbook won’t reach mainstream consumers until April 19, a solid three weeks away, but RIM’s already getting slammed for their initial foray into tablet-dom. Analysts are concerned with the company’s giddy enthusiasm over the Playbook’s launch–can the device even make a splash in an iPad-dominated world? But even if the Playbook turns out to be a dud, it doesn’t necessarily augur RIM’s demise. In any case, RIM is so enthused about the Playbook’s potential that they released a highly optimistic earnings outlook for 2012–predictions that appear to have backfired. Markets in both the U.S. and Canada, RIM’s homeland, saw huge selloffs late last week, dropping the stock by more than 10 percent. Despite that selling spree, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie continues to proclaim the Playbook from every mountaintop. “We are extremely excited about our smartphone, tablet and platform roadmaps,” he said in a statement. And the details about the Playbook, while sketchy, are nothing to balk at–RIM’s tablet sports a processor that rivals the iPad 2, but with a more travel-friendly 7-inch form factor. There’s no doubt we’ll need an incubation period to warm up to the Playbook once it’s in stores. And sure, some features sound a bit wonky, like the tablet’s purported ability to run Blackberry and Android apps. But in the interest of full compatibility, the non-native apps will run in virtual environments, requiring an “app player.” Analysts are worried RIM is banking too much on the cross-OS capability, leading to a nightmare for the company if the technology’s a bust. Blackberry has long been the dominant standard in mobile email, and they practically wrote the book on smartphones, launching the first BlackBerry with calling capabilities in 2002, a full half-decade before we met the iPhone. Be that as it may, RIM needs to be careful, because the stakes are higher now. Then again, the tablet market is flourishing, and there’s always room for one more. As long as the Playbook’s potentially lofty functionality comes to fruition, RIM should emerge just fine–and who knows, perhaps even reach

Once upon a time, jailbreaking our iPhones allowed us to be blissfully free from the clutches of Apple and AT&T’s official regulations. We used our data plans the way we wanted to, even if that included sharing it with our laptops and iPads. (All of this is rhetorical, of course. We would never actually do such a thing.) But now it appears AT&T is cracking down on unofficial tethering methods. Most impacted by this sad news? The nifty app MyWi, which allows iPhone users to create a wireless hotspot to share their phone’s data connection with a laptop or other device. (It was released long before AT&T gave their green light to tethering last June.) MyWi can be used with no extra tethering fees, which is a direct rebellion again AT&T’s paid tethering plan. Loyal users of the app and other unsupported tethering apps are now receiving word that Big Brother has been watching. AT&T is sending out emails to users suspected of tethering via an unofficial method, reminding them of the need to update to the official tethering plan — and explaining that laggards will be automatically subscribed to the DataPro 4GB package, at $45 a month. The email adds that, “If you discontinue tethering, no changes to your current plan will be required.” (via OSXDaily) More on Techland: That Was Fast: Jailbreakers Get Into the iPad 2 Apple Kills iBooks On Jailbroken iOS, But Is That Legal?
