Well, will you look this? Isn’t that a sight for sore eyes? Forget Yahoo the web portal, forget Yahoo the e-mail service, forget Yahoo the company that just bought Tumblr: Back in 2005, there was a Yahoo DVD player. As CNET’s John Falcone tweets: Remember when Yahoo made a DVD player? reviews.cnet.com/dvd-players/ya…— John P. Falcone (@falconejp) May 20, 2013 Yes, John Falcone. Yes, I do. But it’s been… oh, eight years since I’ve thought about it. Man, what a gem. Now, this was no ordinary DVD player. Well, it was sort of ordinary in its functionality, but it sure didn’t look like ordinary DVD players. Yahoo’s YDP-530 had two superfluous analog meters flanking the disc tray; one measured audio volume, its needle bouncing back and forth as dialogue ebbed and flowed. The other supposedly measured the bit rate of the video being played as it made its way from the DVD player to your TV set. To say that CNET’s 2005 review of the YDP-530 is interesting doesn’t do it justice. This quip, for instance, is marvelous: Facing pressure from Google on the search, maps, and e-mail front, Yahoo has decided to strike back with…a DVD player? While the $100 YDP-530 bears the Yahoo brand, it’s actually manufactured by Diamond Electronics, a company that, as its press release states, “supplied the DVD player that Forbes Magazine (September 2003) referenced as Wal-Mart de Mexico’s single largest dollar volume product in the entire country.” As for those cool analog meters? [W]hile they look pretty nifty and even light up, we can’t really imagine any practical purpose for them. Unfortunately for the geek who wants to know how many bits that last chase sequence averaged, the bit-rate meter is wildly inaccurate; it kind of just bounces up and down, even on still images. Standard OSD meters are much better for actually showing video bit rates. Do yourself a favor and read the entire review. It’s not long. The video embedded at the top of it shows off those funky meters, too.
Greetings, old-timer. In light of the recent Yahoo-buys-Tumblr news, my overlords at TIME have asked me to put together a guide of sorts explaining what Tumblr is. A Tumblr for Dummies, if you will. (Note: there is an actual Tumblr for Dummies book already. I did not write it.) If you’re a regular reader here at TIME Tech, you can skip this post entirely, as you already know what Tumblr is. For the rest of you, make sure your Depend elastic-leg undergarments are cinched really, really tightly, because what you’re about to read can only be fairly categorized as a technoerotic thriller. Let’s begin. What is Tumblr? Before there was social networking, there were blogs. And in an effort to muddle things, at one point in time the concept of blogging without trying too hard became known as microblogging. Tumblr is part microblogging, part social networking. If you want to write a several-thousand-word opus about something, Tumblr isn’t the place to do it. If you want to share a moving picture of a little kid acting like a detective as quickly and easily as possible, Tumblr is a good place to do it. That’s the microblogging aspect to Tumblr. Then, other Tumblr users who like moving pictures of little kids acting like detectives can follow you on Tumblr so they’re sure to see every moving little-kid-acting-like-a-detective picture you post. That’s the social networking aspect to Tumblr. For very little information about what Tumblr does, visit the main page of Tumblr.com. For more information, visit Tumblr’s About page, which says: Tumblr lets you effortlessly share anything. Post text, photos, quotes, links, music and videos from your browser, phone, desktop, e-mail or wherever you happen to be. You can customize everything, from colors to your theme’s HTML. Why is the E in Tumblr missing? Tumblr Yes, it’s very unprofessional. For a website to try to convince people that it’s cool, sometimes it will drop a random vowel from its name. You’ll notice the Tumblr logo also has a cool period at the

Chris Hadfield, on behalf of my comrades here on Earth, we salute your return to terra firma. While you were cooped up inside the International Space Station as its first Canadian commander from late December 2012 until recently, you submitted several videos to YouTube; videos containing tasks that, if performed here on Earth, would have drawn the nastiest of the nasty YouTube comments based solely on the relatively mundane nature of the things you did in these videos. BUT! Since you sent them from the International Space Station, everything was exponentially more exciting and interesting. Unsurprisingly, there were still nasty YouTube comments, but no space station in the galaxy can fix that. Here are your greatest hits, good sir: You showed us how to cry. You didn’t actually cry, but you’re manly enough to be okay with crying. You showed us how to brush our teeth. It’s kind of like when you go camping, except everything keeps floating away. You showed us how to shave. Dangers include breathing in your own whiskers and whiskers getting into the computers. This is why I don’t shave on Earth, just in case. You showed us how to sleep. Space jammies. Aw, yeah. Everything about this looks incredible. You’re like a man-sized space baby. You showed us how to eat. Peanut butter and honey on a tortilla, eh? Still too complicated for me, but it looks good nonetheless. You showed us how to wash our hands. Way, way, way more fun in zero-gravity. You showed us how to stay in shape. And like every YouTube video, it got turned into some sort of shimmy or shake or shuffle. You showed us how to puke and what to do with it afterwards. This is why there are no colleges in space. You showed us how to drink our own sweat, wastewater and — yes — even pee. I’ll be honest: Your way is less disturbing than the opening scene of Waterworld. Marginally less disturbing, but less disturbing all the same. Your filtration system seems more advanced

Previously sliced and diced into varying increments and doled out between Gmail and other Google services, the search giant has simplified things by melting its free storage offering into a single 15-gigabyte chunk to be used as you see fit. Per the Google Drive Blog: [I]nstead of having 10 GB for Gmail and another 5 GB for Drive and Google+ Photos, you’ll now get 15 GB of unified storage for free to use as you like between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos. With this new combined storage space, you won’t have to worry about how much you’re storing and where. For example, maybe you’re a heavy Gmail user but light on photos, or perhaps you were bumping up against your Drive storage limit but were only using 2 GB in Gmail. Now it doesn’t matter, because you can use your storage the way you want. You can check your current storage here and purchase more if you need it. You may not see the 15-gigabyte clump right away: Google says the changes “will roll out over the next couple of weeks.” Bringing it all together: 15 GB now shared between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos [Google]

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Amazon is working on “a high-end smartphone featuring a screen that allows for 3-D images without glasses.” This rumor comes to us courtesy of “people familiar with the company’s plans,” according to the Journal. Whether true or not, it shouldn’t come as an earth shattering surprise that Amazon might be working on some sort of smartphone — the company has found success in hardware devices such as its Kindle e-book readers and Kindle Fire tablets. Oh, and speculation about an Amazon smartphone has been going on since what seems like the day after the first Kindle Fire tablet was introduced (see here, here and here, for starters). However, to tout glasses-free 3D in 2013 as a major feature of a smartphone seems downright insane. We saw a handful of glasses-free 3D smartphones trickle out a few years ago, consumers yawned, and now — surprise, surprise – we don’t hear much about glasses-free 3D smartphones. The Journal‘s description of this miraculous glasses-free 3D technology certainly sounds impressive — especially the bit about being able to navigate stuff with your eyeballs: One of the devices is a high-end smartphone featuring a screen that allows for 3-D images without glasses, these people said. Using retina-tracking technology, images on the smartphone would seem to float above the screen like a hologram and appear three-dimensional at all angles, they said. Users may be able to navigate through content using just their eyes, two of the people said. But a somewhat less enthusiastic gadget user *might* read into that as a gimmick paired with a second gimmick. If the phone itself is cool and the gimmick-plus-gimmick 3D thing turns out to be a nonessential added feature, so be it. Actually, what the hell: make it the main feature and promote it heavily. I want to see what happens. The Journal also reports that Amazon is working on a second smartphone, along with “an audio-only streaming device.” The audio device would make sense given Amazon’s ownership of Audible.com; another smartphone

Well, that didn’t take long. You may recall Facebook Home, the heavily modified Android experience launched by the world’s most popular social network a little over a month ago. While Facebook Home is available for download on several existing Android handsets, Facebook also partnered with HTC to launch a midrange smartphone preloaded with Home – the HTC First. The phone went on sale for $99 with a two-year contract through AT&T and became available on April 12. Now, less than a month later, AT&T has dropped the price of HTC First to $0.99 with a two-year contract. Surely, this means the end of Facebook Home as we know it, right? What a flop, huh? It’ll probably ruin all of Facebook in general, too, and we’ll all go back to using Friendster. Or not. “We do promotions like this all the time,” AT&T’s Mark Siegel told AllThingsD’s Ina Fried. Of course, the reviews for Facebook Home in the Google Play store haven’t exactly been mind-blowing, but these are still early days for software that Mark Zuckerberg himself promised would be updated monthly. If I were a betting man – and I’m not – I’d bet that people have probably gone into the AT&T store, seen the HTC First, and decided to pony up an extra $100 for a higher-end Android handset knowing they could just load Facebook Home onto it anyway. At $0.99, the HTC First becomes a much, much, much more compelling phone, though, so it’ll be interesting to see if people start walking around with these things.

Say what you will about Windows 8. If it’s done anything, it’s gotten hardware manufacturers to rethink the tried-and-true laptop design. Case in point: two new machines from Acer – the 15.6-inch Aspire R7 and the 11.6-inch Aspire P3. Let’s start with the Aspire R7, as it’s the wildest of the pair: Where in the name of all that’s sensible in this world is the trackpad? Ah, here it is behind the keyboard: Why, why, why? To make you touch the screen is why. The screen is “mounted on Acer’s ‘Ezel Hinge’,” according to the company, so it “can flip, reverse, lie flat or float.” Acer’s angle is that the closer the screen is to you, the less cumbersome it is to touch it while using it in laptop mode. As you can see in the above video, the screen can be flipped backward to show something to someone sitting across the table from you. Or you can fold it down flat to use the R7 like a tablet. The whole thing tips the scales at over five pounds, however, so this is a computer first and a tablet second. It’ll be available May 17 from Best Buy, with a suggested retail price of $1,000. Then there’s the Aspire P3. It’s a trackpad-less touchscreen Ultrabook wherein the 11.6-inch screen detaches from the included keyboard cover for use as a tablet: We’ve seen similar designs from the likes of the Microsoft Surface tablets, the Lenovo Helix getup we saw at CES, and a handful of Android tablet combos. This one’s got some decent oomph under the hood, Acer’s promising “up to six hours” of battery life, and when folded into its keyboard case, it looks like it’d be easy to tote around: Undocked as a tablet, the P3 weighs a wee bit over three pounds and measures a little over three-quarters of an inch thick. It’s available “immediately” for $800, according to Acer, though I’m not able to find a place to buy it quite yet. More info: Aspire R7 Product

Ah, finally. If you use both Gmail and Google Calendar for your e-mail and planning needs, respectively, you can now create calendar events from directly within Gmail messages. According to Google’s Gmail blog: Starting today, dates and times within emails are lightly underlined: click them to schedule that conference call or lunch date without ever leaving Gmail. When you click on one of these underlined dates, you’ll be able to preview your schedule for the day and change the title, date or time of the event. Clicking “Add to Calendar” will do exactly that — add the event to your calendar, and for extra convenience, the calendar event will include a link back to the original email. Here’s what it looks like in action: Google The fact that each calendar event created this way links back to its corresponding e-mail message is icing on the cake — especially if you have a tendency to stare blankly at stuff on your calendar, wondering why you scheduled a particular event, who’s going to be there and what the subject matter is supposed to be. I dunno, maybe I should see a doctor about this. If you don’t notice this feature in your Gmail yet, don’t worry. Google says, “This new feature is rolling out over the next week to everyone with the English (US) language. We’ll be adding other languages soon, so stay tuned.” Add events to Google Calendar from Gmail [Google]

Starting May 1 (and for a limited time), if you bring a smartphone that’s less than three years old and still in “good, working condition” into an AT&T store, you can get $100 or more to use toward the purchase of a new phone. You’ll have to sign up for a two-year contract with AT&T to get the deal. Since many smartphones cost $200 with a two-year contract, AT&T positions this as a “50% off” deal, though the company mentions that a smartphone priced at $99.99 with a two-year contract would be free under this scenario. AT&T also says, “Some trade-in phones may have a value higher than $100. In this case, customers will receive the credit at the higher value.” I confirmed with an AT&T rep that this deal is good for current AT&T subscribers at the end of their two-year contracts as well. So if you’re with AT&T already and you’re due for a new phone, you can trade in your current smartphone for $100 or more in credit and then start another two-year foray into the wild world of wireless.
Just in time for Outdoor Drinking Season (capitalized because of its importance), here’s the iFlask. This $25 iPhone lookalike’s only app is the ability to make you drunk. Phone calls? Nope. E-mail? Who needs it? Internet? Inner-wet… with booze. Though not at all the first iPhone-style flask on the market, the iFlask looks to fancy things up a bit: It holds five ounces of your favorite libation, features a polycarbonate and stainless steel frame, and ships with a collapsible funnel. Just as a USB cord transfers songs to your real iPhone, so does the collapsible funnel transfer liquid that will make you sing… all alone… at a urinal… while you’re at church. You’re a monster, man. There are kids around! Pony up another $10 for the iFlask Ultimate Kit, and you’ll get everything listed above, plus an extra collapsible funnel and a collapsible metal shot glass keychain. Your car key and a shot glass — two items that should always be in close proximity, am I right? (I am not right.) The iFlask is available for preorder, but has no definitive ship date other than “could be late May.” iFlask [GoiFlask.com via This Is Why I'm Broke]

This is the Buddy Cup, created by Budweiser Brazil. The cup connects to your Facebook account, and when you clank it against someone else’s Buddy Cup, the two of you become friends on Facebook. So you have the best of both worlds here: the most delicious beer in existence, and the ability to quickly add strangers as Facebook friends. I’m assuming, of course, that you like beer that tastes like warm paint no matter how cold it is, and your definition of “friend” is something along the lines of “person who was in a bar at the same time I was once.” All surliness aside, this actually looks pretty cool. According to the above video, people attending a Budweiser-sponsored event were able to scan a little chip on the bottom of each cup using their smartphone and then link that cup to their Facebook account. The video continues on to say, “So, they just did the same as always: went out drinking Bud and making friends.” I know that’s how I roll. I used to frequent a bar in Minneapolis where you could buy your own mug for $20. They’d keep the mug behind the bar for you, and every time you went there, you’d get to drink out of your own mug and each beer would cost less than it’d cost non-regulars. Now THAT’s how you create alcoholism loyalty. There was a lengthy waiting list for a mug, all the regulars knew each other by virtue of the fact we all had mugs, and several of us clanked our mugs together for various reasons. None of us drank Budweiser. What I’m saying is: instead of rolling this out at one-off Budweiser events, go back in time and do this at the Green Mill on Hennepin Ave. in Uptown when I was still a Mug Club member there. I don’t even think we had Facebook back then, so bonus: We’re all filthy stinkin’ rich now for accidentally creating the world’s most popular social network with all our mug clanking.
It’s a problem every parent – every parent — has to deal with: Your child loves Batman but hates being stuck in a car seat. What if I told you that for $149, you could eliminate every single challenge associated with parenthood? (Disclosure: I don’t have kids, but I assume they’re really easy to raise except for this car seat problem.) The Batman car seat touts a bunch of safety features I don’t understand… Harnessed Booster Weight Limit: 22-65 lbs. Booster Car Seat Weight Limit: 30-100 lbs. But in my defense, I was already sold on this item based solely on the two-position recline and the dual cupholders. The wrap-around cape that instantly transforms any toddler into an animal cracker-eating and dual sippy cup-toting superhero is icing on the cake: KidsEmbrace.com The Batman car seat costs $149 and is available at KidsEmbrace.com; no word on an adult version for the living room or den, but this Slanket-style Batman throw blanket with sleeves looks mighty handsome all the same.
AllThingsD’s Kara Swisher is reporting that popular daily deals site LivingSocial “has suffered a massive cyber-attack on its computer systems.” Swisher continues to say that 50 million customers have been affected and will need to reset their passwords. Here’s a snippet from an internal e-mail sent to LivingSocial employees and apparently obtained by AllThingsD: The information accessed includes names, email addresses, date of birth for some users, and encrypted passwords — technically ‘hashed’ and ‘salted’ passwords. We never store passwords in plain text. Two things you should know: 1. * The database that stores customer credit card information was not affected or accessed. 2. * The database that stores merchants’ financial and banking information was not affected or accessed. So it looks like some personal info may have fallen into the wrong hands, but credit card and other financial details should be safe. If you have a strong enough password, it’ll hopefully be difficult enough to decrypt to avoid any misuse. (Here’s a refresher about how to create strong online passwords.) At any rate, you’ll want to change your current LivingSocial password to something new just in case.
Listen, man. Why can’t I have myself a drink to unwind myself? Don’t touch me! I have every right to be here. My taxes pay for this dumpster. I’m not drunk! You’re drunk. I’m not drunk. I’m not. Watch, I’ll blow into this thingy. See? Serfectly pober. Oh, wait. Yeah, I’m in the bag. I pretty much soaked through the bag and into another bag, actually. Has this happened to you? It could, if you’d just plunk down $150 for the BACtrack Mobile Breathalyzer. It’s a breathalyzer with a Bluetooth connection, so you can display your level of drunkenness on your cellphone. The fun doesn’t stop there, though. You can text the results directly to your favorite designated driver, anonymously upload how drunk you are to a world map, or publicly upload how drunk you are not only to the world map but to various social networks as well. It’s like you’re having a drinking contest with the whole wide world! If binge drinking needs anything, it’s gamification, am I right? Seriously, though, this thing straddles the line between being useful (you’re too drunk to drive!) and being a virtual version of your buddy who wear shorts even in the winter (let’s do shots, bro!). Assuming you use this to keep yourself alive and out of trouble, the app has a useful-sounding feature that estimates how long it’ll take you to sober up given your current state of drunkenness. There’s also a feature that lets you take and share photos of your drinks, which is something you’re really good at when you’re drunk. Ooh, whatever’s in that blurry glass looks good! And your finger looks great half-obscuring the lens, too! The accompanying app only works with Apple products – sorry, Android owners. However, you can check out something like the Breathometer or, if you’re feeling especially industrious, build your own.
In case you hadn’t heard, BlackBerry has been attempting to claw its way back into the smartphone race. The all-touchscreen BlackBerry Z10 hit the market not too long ago (see our review here), but it’s the BlackBerry Q10 that true diehards have been holding out for. Due out in the U.S. in late May, the Q10 sports an honest-to-goodness hardware keyboard reminiscent of the keyboards that turned mild-mannered BlackBerry owners into downright fanatics in the first place. Here’s a representative sampling of some of the various Q10 reviews that have been trickling out. Not to be a spoiler, but the basic consensus seems to be that people who love, love, love BlackBerry keyboards won’t be disappointed with the Q10; everyone else might be a tougher sell, though. Joanna Stern at ABC News: It is a fully modern BlackBerry – and not just by BlackBerry standards. It’s fast, has a mobile browser that beats many of the others and an outstanding physical keyboard. No, its battery life and camera are not as strong as the competition, but its bigger issue lies with the fact that it runs a brand new operating system. While the software offers something entirely different than others, overall it and its app store lack the robustness of Google, Apple and even Microsoft’s offerings. Many who have been waiting for a new Blackberry with a keyboard and a real browser will find the Q10 to be the phone they have been waiting on for so long. As for me, I’d replace my Bold with the Q10 in a heartbeat, but ultimately it’s not enough to become the only phone I carry. Peter Svensson at the Associated Press: [T]he Q10 is likely to be attractive to the BlackBerry faithful. It deserves to lure some people over from Androids and iPhones as well. The keyboard makes the Q10 a good complement to a tablet. Use the bigger screen for entertainment, surfing and gaming, and the BlackBerry for messaging. When I reviewed the Z10 model in January, I found I couldn’t
