America has had problems with voter turnout, but now Oregon is trying to help close that gap by letting its residents vote by iPad. This, my friends, is no time to play Angry Birds with Herman Cain. Disabled voters in five Oregon counties are getting a serious taste of the future as officials integrate the devices into local elections. Apple donated five iPads to test out the program, while the state shelled out $72,000 to develop the special voting software. (MORE: The iPad as an Election Tool? Maybe in 2012) With an iPad in tow, county election workers are going door-to-door to any place where voters might have trouble filling out traditional ballots. In many ways, it is becoming an ideal device—voters will be able to adjust font sizes, screen colors, and even have the candidates’ names read out to them. For those who have limited mobility, a controller called a “sip-and-puff” can also be attached to manipulate the screen. Voters can then print out their completed ballots, and drop them in the mail or an official ballot box. The state plans to reuse the system when the special general election in January is held. A complete statewide rollout is possible if the project takes off. (PHOTOS: The Voting Machines of America) According to the Associated Press, Oregon’s current voting tools for the disabled are nearing the end of their shelf life, and are often cumbersome to lug around. It’s also expensive—in the past two years, Oregon has spent over $325,000 maintaining the devices. However, if the state was to roll out the iPad program, it would only cost the government $36,000 for the tablets. [via Associated Press] Erica Ho is a reporter at TIME.
Can’t beat ‘em? Join them. Disney and YouTube have reportedly struck a deal that helps both companies gain better traction in the online market. The two companies have agreed to spend a combined $10-15 million producing an original video series that will be distributed on a co-branded channel on Disney and YouTube. Disney, who will be producing the shorts, has had trouble attracting an audience online on its own Disney.com website. (MORE: YouTube Drops $100 Million to Add Original Content) According to web analytics firm ComScore, Disney Interactive has lost significant online traffic since the beginning of the summer. On top of that, the division has lost over $300 million in the last four quarters. By partnering with YouTube, the company would gain YouTube credibility (generally perceived as being “cooler”) with its younger viewers. Disney Interactive’s co-president, James A. Pitaro, told The New York Times that “It’s imperative to go where our audience is. [We want to] bring Disney’s legacy of storytelling to a new generation of families and Disney enthusiasts on the platforms they prefer.” (MORE: Three Studios Say No to YouTube’s Movie Rental Plan) The deal also benefits YouTube. The video service wants to further its reputation with parents while simultaneously adding professional videos to enhance its online advertising profitability. Indeed, the company has been making a big push—back in April, YouTube dropped $100 million to create original content. Thus, teaming up with Disney would help serve YouTube’s own needs as well.
Hold your horses before you update that phone. If you’re considering downloading Apple’s latest and greatest mobile software (specifically, iOS 5), you may want to rethink that for a second. Apple has admitted that some bugs are causing battery issues with certain iPhone models. Some customers are finding that their iPhones are having less-than-expected battery life after the update. Apple confirmed the issues, telling AllThingsD, “A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices. We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.” (MORE: Apple iPhone 4S Battery Life Still Circling the Drain?) There has no been clear indicator as to what’s causing the battery issue. It seems like the reasons vary depending on network, usage and settings. Some iPhone users are finding that turning off a time zone feature and limiting notifications is making a difference. Here’s a general tip: if you’re suffering from poor battery life, lowering your display brightness can help—but this particular issue runs deeper than a simple settings tweak, so we’ll have to wait for Apple to patch its software in order for things to get truly resolved. Apple has not made any official suggestions for affected users, and had little to say beyond acknowledging the issue.
If you can’t wait to get your grubby little paws on what may turn out to be the best Android phone this year, strap in. According to an apparently leaked roadmap, it’s coming this month—but perhaps not until after Thanksgiving. Droid Life may have managed to grab a quick peek at Verizon’s product roadmap for the upcoming holidays, and if the supposedly leaked material is accurate, the wireless carrier intends to give the HTC Rezound a big push from mid-November until Black Friday. From there on out, Verizon will shift gears to promote the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. (Don’t worry, it’ll apparently be touting the Droid RAZR, too: Hello, it is the holiday season.)
Get a slice of this news. If you want to get a taste of Mango, Windows is offering some all around. Microsoft announced yesterday that Windows Phone 7.5 (also known as Mango; what’s up with all of these food names by the way?) would be pushed out to every phone, regardless of carrier. Well, every phone but three, which includes the Samsung Omnia 7, Dell Venue Pro and Samsung Focus. Microsoft teased that a firmware update could be available as early as next week. The upgrade, though, won’t be an en masse update and timing will vary depending on manufacturer. (MORE: Windows Phone ‘Mango’ Goes Live, Apps Hit the Web) Microsoft’s Eric Hautala noted in a blog post on Thursday that “We’re now delivering Mango to 100 percent of eligible phones around the world, regardless of carrier.” Of course, Mango should help with performance and fix bugs on existing Windows phones. The update also contains several new features, like voice-to-text, multi-tasking, and Bing vision. It’s a fair bet Windows Phone will need more than just that to stay competitive with Android and iOS 5, but hey it’s a start.
Forget Street View. Now when I’m bored I can pretend I’m working in the Conde Nast cafeteria. Or at the Googleplex. Last May, Google announced that they would start taking interior views of stores. But why? It turns out that some of these images are now making their way online as part of a new feature showcased on Google Maps. Street View is finally going indoors (but not before I clean my apartment). (MORE: Ask Techland: How Can I Use Google Maps to Find My Next Apartment?) Don’t worry, privacy buffs. There are a couple steps before Google can get photo-happy. To even begin the process, store owners first have to submit an application to Google. The company will then pick which stores get featured, and then a Google-certified photographer will drop by. So much for showing off that swanky new couch in the lounge right away. Photos taken for the feature are owned by Google, so even if you object to an unflattering photo, they still have the right to keep one up (you were the one that submitted the application, weren’t you?). (MORE: Google Maps: An Invasion of Privacy?) According to VentureBeat, thousands of businesses have already worked with Google to get these shots put together, though some people have raised concerns that burglars could use the feature to glean information about a business before robbing it, a la Ocean’s Eleven. And as much as I’m up for another Clooney and Co. cinematic extravaganza, that’s just not cool. Erica Ho is a reporter at TIME. Find her on Twitter at @ericamho and Google+.
The Apple patent war is going to get a little nastier. We’ve all heard about the patent wars between Apple and Samsung, but Apple now owns the “slide to unlock” patent, available on smartphones almost everywhere. In particular, Android devices—phones and tablets alike—are running the risk of being sued by Apple for patent infringement. It’s just not Android devices that will be affected by the newest development: several Windows Phone devices also might encroach on the design element. (MORE: Apple-Samsung Patent Battle: Apple’s Totally Winning) Apple originally applied for the patent about a year before the introduction of the iPhone. It was only yesterday that the patent was awarded to Apple, which means you can start to expect to see substantially less slide-to-unlock devices on the market from now on. The patent diagram shown by 9to5Mac displays a left-to-right motion, so it is unclear if a top-to-down motion or other finger swipes are affected by the patent. However, the patent could spell trouble for manufacturers and designers: should Apple resort to legal action, it is more than likely the courts would favor the iPhone maker. (MORE: What a Patent War Means for South Korea’s Samsung) Perhaps the worst case of Apple patent wars can be best exemplified by its conflict with Samsung within recent years. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab has been pulled off of the shelves in some countries, while in others its launch has been delayed. It was also rumored that Samsung’s flagship Galaxy Nexus was purposely built to avoid patent infringement given Samsung’s recent difficulties with Apple. This latest patent hangs over the heads of more than just Samsung, though. HTC, Motorola and many other Android manufacturers could be aversely affected. Maybe it’s time to push out some face unlock options ASAP, eh? Unless Apple’s already got a patent for that, too. Erica Ho is a reporter at TIME. Find her on Twitter at @ericamho and Google+.
