It’s hard to imagine a cell phone these days that isn’t equipped with a camera, a web browser and assorted other bells and whistles. But Just5, a “simple features phone,” takes a counter-intuitive approach. It just lets you make calls. That’s it. Nothing else. Nada. Zippo. Think of it as the anti-iPhone. Or, actually, think of it as The Grandma Phone. As Skatter Tech’s review of the Just5 makes clear, this isn’t really a phone for the reluctant Luddite. With features like a large SOS button that, if pressed, will sound an alarm and send “help me” text messages to five emergency contacts, Just5 is targeted squarely at senior citizens. And in fact the phone looks to be pretty useful for its intended purpose and audience. It’s got jumbo buttons, a screen that announces each number as you press it, and a six-day battery life when for when septuagenarians are in standby mode. Pretty much the only hitch is that the Just5′s suggested retail price is $90–a hefty sum for those on a fixed income. Still, for staying connected with the seniors in your life, the Just5 just might be worth it. So think about getting your own grandmother one. You did call Grandma today, didn’t you?
As Japan struggles to cope with the ongoing tragedies engendered by earthquakes, tsunamis and faltering nuclear power plants, Apple has announced that it will postpone the launch of the iPad 2 in the tech-savvy country. The tablet, which launched on Friday in the U.S., was scheduled to debut in Japan on March 25. But Apple spokeswoman Natalie Kerris told Macworld in a statement that Apple is “delaying the launch of the iPad 2 in Japan while the country and our teams focus on recovering from the recent disaster. Our hearts go out to the people of Japan, including our employees and their families, who have been impacted by this terrible tragedy.” It’s just the latest in a series of smart and sensitive moves by Apple, whose stores in Japan reportedly became havens for survivors trying to contact relatives in the immediate aftermath of the quake and tsunami. The company was also swift to solicit donations to the Red Cross via the iTunes Store. As for now, the Japanese iPad 2 launch is postponed indefinitely.
After unveiling its lovably dinky trike a few weeks ago, Google Street View has updated its homepage to give users a behind-the-scenes peek at how the Street View team operates. This added transparency is not without reason, as Google Street View continues to be mired in controversies around the globe concerning privacy. The new site makes it easier to see where Google’s team has taken to the streets, and also features a section on the team’s methods and how they address privacy concerns. But all the legal stuff aside, the best part about the new site is the neatly organized gallery of notable places on Street View. It’s an addictive and easy way to explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Versailles or remote places like Half Moon Island in Antarctica. So if you excuse me, I’m going to go back to exploring Manana Island, Hawaii.
With the hefty minimum price tag of $629 (including 3G), the iPad 2 isn’t exactly a recession buster. But aside from the cost of software development, how much is an iPad 2 really worth? According to All Things Digital, who got an exclusive look at the breakdown from market research firm IHS iSuppli, the total cost of all the hardware for a 32 GB iPad 2 with 3G comes in at $325. The report breaks down the cost of everything form Apple’s A5 chip ($14) to its touch-sensitive display ($127). So are we getting royally jipped by Apple? It’s hard to say, and it depends on how you value the less tangible factors like the cost of developing the software. We just hope that the love you’ll feel for your new gadget is priceless. Read the detailed report here.
Nobody likes layovers, especially long and boring ones. But if you happen to have a stopover at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, you at least can rent an e-book to keep you company. The library, which opened last week, features about 30 iPads and other devices that each offer 400 titles, as well as 2,000 physical Chinese and English language books. While the project is certainly a great idea, it has a long way to go. For starters, 30 e-readers isn’t nearly enough to be loaned out on a first-come first-served basis in an airport that handles up to 17 million passengers a year. Furthermore, people can’t download the books to their own devices, meaning that unless you’ve got a really long layover, you won’t be finishing that novel you started in the waiting room.
We don’t all have that well-read friend who can direct us to the latest news stories and blogs that he thinks we’d appreciate. That’s why there’s Zite, a free personalized iPad magazine and news discovery service that launched today. While it’s noticeably similar to the much-loved Flipboard, Zite functions more as a web discovery service that will show you content it thinks you will like rather than a set list of sites you subscribe to. Zite works similarly to Pandora in that it adjusts the content it feeds you according to your tastes: give a liberal political blog a thumbs up, and you’ll likely see more of the same. Vote something down, and you won’t see things like it again. The app takes its initial data from your Twitter account or Google Reader and analyzes who you follow and what you like to read. Are you interested in long-form investigative pieces, short food blogs with recipes or celebrity gossip sites that embed video? Zite will take it all into account, and then show you information it thinks you’ll like given your current habits. Its algorithms are pretty in-depth, as Zite CEO Ali Davar explained to CNN: ”[The algorithm is] a combination of semantic- and statistically-based machine learning,” he says. “It works by looking at the articles you click on and the characteristics of those articles. Is the article longer or shorter? Is it skewed toward one element of a topic or another? Is it a political blog? If so, does it have have a right- or left-wing slant?” But for all the smartness that’s packed into this app, many customers on Apple’s app store site gripe in their reviews about Zite’s eternally slow loading time. Since the app launched today, perhaps it just wasn’t ready for primetime. Now, if only the kinks could be worked out soon so we can start to discover all the content out there that’s waiting to be read.
When it comes to download speeds, a series of independent tests claim that the Verizon iPhone can’t compare to its AT&T counterpart. Wired reports that on average, AT&Ts 3G network is twice as fast as Verizon’s. Still, while AT&T had the advantage in terms of download speed, Wired’s Brian Chen says that there were times when it couldn’t get the job done at all due to connectivity issues. On the flipside, Verizon had better overall connection and was therefore able to complete more downloads, despite the fact that they happened at a slower rate. As we learn more about the Verizon iPhone, it’s looking more and more like choosing between the two devices will depend on if you prefer faster connection speeds or better overall connectivity. You can see the rest of the details of the tests here. More on Techland: The Verizon iPhone Hits Stores. Here’s Everything You Need to Know.
Yes, you read the headline right–baby robots are being used to treat depressed seniors with Alzheimer’s in Japan. As strange as it might sound, some studies have shown that caring for dolls is therapeutic to depressed Alzheimer’s patients. The babyloid, which is still a prototype, looks a bit like the strange lovechild of a robot and a baby beluga whale. The five-pound, 17-inch long bot can reportedly move its arms, head, mouth and eyelids, all while emitting robot baby sounds (we’re curious to hear what those sound like). While this baby bot does sound kind of nifty, buying it will definitely take its toll on your wallet–the babyloid will retail in Japan soon for a hefty price tag of about $600.
Google Street View isn’t going to let the “street” part define it anymore. That’s right, Google Maps wants to include more than just a view of the roads–it’s going off-roading, on… a tricycle. Despite a variety of complaints and lawsuits that claim Google Street View is an invasion of privacy, the company is forging ahead into new territory that was inaccessible with its camera-mounted cars. With the help of the clunky “trike,” a 9-foot long, 250-pound tricycle that’s equipped with a camera that can capture 360-degree images, Google has begun pedaling its way to landmarks (see the video from Stonehenge, above), parks, universities and other attractions that were previously unreachable by car. The expansion of Google Street View is pretty great publicity for parks and other local attractions–after all, who wouldn’t want to take a real visit to France’s Château de Chenonceaux after experiencing its grounds on a laptop screen? As for the rest of us who are too busy to actually make the trip, it’s nice to know that we can visit Dublin’s National Botanic Gardens or the Stonehenge without leaving our cubicles.
Although Steve Jobs may not become Sir Steve any time soon, he’s still our tech-y knight in shining armor. The Telegraph reports that plans to knight Steve Jobs for his contributions to business and technology in 2009 were scrapped by then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who held a grudge ever since Jobs declined an invitation to speak at a Labour Party Conference. While the snub is certainly a little bit stinging–long-time rival Bill Gates was given the honor in 2005–we know that Jobs has got bigger fish to fry. After all, it’s hard to argue with Apple’s dominance in the tech industry… and who needs knighthood when you’re busy developing the iPad 2?
As the world around us becomes increasingly digitalized, it seems that even the stories we tell have been converted into blog posts and published on the internet. But luckily for fans of oral history, Broadcastr is keeping the joy of storytelling in its original form alive. The site, which is currently in beta and plans to release iPhone and Android apps by the end of the month, is quite literally a map of stories–all the audio files are tagged by location, Google Maps-style. Browse the tags on the map and you’ll find everything from Ukranian slam poetry to UNICEF reports to personal stories from strangers around the globe. Half the fun is the randomness of the whole thing–for example, I clicked on a tag in Morocco and listened to a girl tell a story about meeting a gardener that she thought was Muhammad Ali. I never would have listened to that story, but once it came up randomly, I found myself really enjoying it. And when the mobile apps come out, listening to stories about a place as you explore it could be a great experience (Fodor’s Travel Guides has caught on, too–it plans to release audio city guides in the coming months). Amid the countless digital ways we now record everything in our lives, Broadcastr showed me how fun it is to sit back and listen to voices from around the globe. Perhaps oral histories aren’t dead, they just have a new home on the web.
Everybody loves those hidden gem restaurants, but it’s hard to find them without occasionally having a misstep. Luckily, there’s an app for that. With the help of FourSquare, donteat.at will let you know if a restaurant is likely a lovable hole-in-the-wall or an actual health code violation. Despite its somewhat bitter moniker, donteat.at isn’t fueled by user reviews of one angry diner upset with slow service. Instead, it uses constantly-updated data on New York City health code violations, and alerts users when they check in to an offending restaurant. This convenient app is appealing partially because of its simplicity–there’s no interface beyond its landing page, and users only need to sign up once. After that, no news is good news, and you’ll only get a notification if the restaurant you just checked in at is in violation of the health code. While donteat.at currently is only for New York City restaurants, Stoller plans to expand to new cities soon (San Francisco is up next). But for now, at least it will let you eat in the Big Apple without any worry or regret.
When Facebook advertiser Joshua Niamehr logged in to his ad campaign’s account, he knew he had an outstanding balance. He didn’t think, however, that he’d racked up a bill of $8.8 million. Niamehr’s account, however, showed this statement: There is an outstanding balance of $8,804,978.14 USD on your account. Your ads will not be displayed until your account is settled. Please enter a valid funding source. When you submit that information, we will charge your funding source for $8,804,978.14 USD. Advertising on Facebook is pretty cheap, especially considering how much exposure an advertiser can get. But $8.8 million? Not exactly cheap, especially when your outstanding account balance was actually supposed to be $58.07, as Niamehr’s was. Facebook soon corrected the $8 billion glitch, but the question remains: why such a specifically incorrect number? TechCrunch reports that Niamehr thinks the number reflects Facebook’s total outstanding debt from advertisers, but there’s no way to know for sure. For now, we bet he’s just happy to have kept the debt collectors at bay.
Taking a cue from the likes of Bing and the latest foodie startups, Google has jumped on the recipe search bandwagon with its latest feature, Google Recipe View, which debuted yesterday. Luckily for the less tech-savvy home cooks everywhere, using it is pretty simple–just search for an ingredient or dish as usual, and when you get the results, click the “recipes” filter button in the left-hand column. Once you’ve got a full arsenal of recipes at your disposal, the recipes filter on the left lets you narrow your search instantly by specific ingredient, preparation time and calorie count, until you find the perfect recipe. Hungry yet? It’s hard not to be, with the entire Internet’s worth of recipes at your disposal.
Picking up your landline phone and dialing in to vote for Clay Aiken on American Idol is so 2003, and texting ‘VOTE’ over and over for the sake of David Archuleta is so 2008. The latest way to vote for your favorite Idol? Via Facebook. Entertainment Weekly reports that ‘American Idol’ has finally decided to take advantage of social media by introducing Facebook voting. Sources tell EW that it will work like this: starting (most likely) during the March 1 show, users can visit a special Facebook page dedicated to voting to cast their ballot a maximum of 50 times during the voting period. Given that voting for your favorite idol will now be only a click away, this new method could give ‘Idol’ an even bigger ratings kick. And ex-Idol judge Simon Cowell seems to think Facebook voting is a good plan, too–it was leaked that he’ll be using the same method when his new show, ‘X Factor,’ debuts this fall. But if you’re one of the few who’s not on Facebook, never fear–’Idol’ fans can still vote old-school style, via toll-free number or text. After news of a meeting in which retail employees signed a non-disclosure agreement, the Internet is abuzz with rumors of an upcoming product launch. Sources at BGR speculate that the new line of laptops will be announced on Thursday to coincide with Steve Jobs’ birthday. They also report that the laptops will be available for sale within the next two weeks and will feature Intel’s new dual-core SandyBridge mobile chips. While all the rumors will certainly amount to something eventually, don’t sell your current MacBook Pro just yet: the rumored announcement is only two days away, and there’s still no word of a planned media event. Either Apple is keeping this under wraps until the last possible moment, or Steve Jobs is getting a belated birthday present, instead.
In honor of the Year of the Rabbit, Google Chrome announced its newest beta release today, which features a new version of the V8 JavaScript engine that’s proven to be 66 percent faster than the version in Chrome 9. In addition to JavaScript that’s as fast as a bunny rabbit and GPU-accelerated video, Chrome 10 also simplifies a user’s browser experience by allowing the synching of passwords, bookmarks, preferences, themes and extensions across multiple computers. Users will also notice a reworked settings interface that opens in a new tab and is easily navigable through the search bar. See the demo below: Keep in mind that Chrome 10 is currently only available in the beta channel. But as WebMonkey reports, it should be released to the masses in just six weeks.
These days, it seems like everybody wants to be famous, or at least relatively Internet-famous. Google was probably banking on that idea, at least a little bit, when it announced its “Demo Slam” competition last October. The publicity stunt of a competition, for which it appears the only reward will be lots of Internet fame, asked users to make a video showcasing a creative way to use a Google program such as Google Voice Search, Google Translate, Google Video Chat or Google Goggles, among others. All submitted videos were then entered in a face off for the most votes. Although Demo Slams wasn’t a slam dunk by any means, four months have elapsed and the company announced today that it has narrowed down all of the video submissions (all of which were actually pretty cool) to a round of 16 for tournament-style voting. While we’re not sure how many people actually followed the contest before, we sized up the competition for you. Here’s a look at 5 entertaining Demo Slams worth watching. 1. Rushmore A group of guys go through a lot of chicken wire and spraying face paint to create a replica of Mount Rushmore that Google Goggles recognizes. While one commenter points out at the end that Goggles ultimately recognizes the landmark based on a pattern of fake trees rather than on their replica of the faces themselves, it’s still a creative slam that’s fun to watch. 2. Extra Spicy This one has the thrill of a prank call, but with the tasty reward that is samosas and indian curry. Who knew Google Translate could get you that? 3. Maria Sharapova Even though we’re sure Sharapova’s only doing this as part of her Sony Ericsson sponsorship, watching her use Google Voice translate while pounding tennis balls at the boys is a slam, indeed. 4. Epic Google Docs Animation While this probably isn’t the best way to collaborate to make an animation project, these guys take the cake in the “most creative” category by using only Google Docs to

Everloop: The Facebook for Tweens?

Plenty of parents worry about their kids’ online activities and their presence on social networks. Last week, the first lady even weighed in on the topic, saying that her daughters, ages 9 and 12, shouldn’t be on Facebook. But what’s a parent to do with their Internet-savvy tween who wants to stay connected with friends? A new startup claims to have the answer in the form of a safe and closely-monitored social network that abides by the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The network, called Everloop, launched yesterday and has already roped in a partnership with Internet safety education program i-Safe to bring it to 56,000 schools. Everloop calls itself a “social looping platform” that works by allowing creating a “privacy loop” around kids’ connections. Inside the loop, kids can participate in collaborative learning and school projects, connect with friends by posting pictures and sharing comments and personalize and decorate their profile. While Everloop’s homepage says that there are “no grownups allowed,” this isn’t exactly true. In order to join the site, a child needs a parent to register, and registration even requires a credit card number for security. Parents can then set up and control how much of their child’s activity they can see when they log in to their own account. For example, a parent can prohibit friend suggestions or instant messaging, or keep all options enabled. But regardless of a child’s specific parental controls, whenever he or she makes a new “connection,” parents are always notified. Think of it as virtual approval for a playdate. ”At Everloop, we’re recognizing that kids want to be online, and our goal is to get kids’ online time focused on connecting with a purpose,” Everloop’s website’s parents page says. Even though Everloop certainly has children’s best interests at heart–it monitors the site 24/7 for inappropriate behavior–no one can say for sure if a social network so squeaky clean and parent-approved will be a hit with its actual audience, the tweens. After all, growing up means always struggling with what it means

Plenty of us spend hours using our laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles and other gadgets. They come with us everywhere, and when they malfunction or break, it’s often hard to go on without replacing them immediately. But can you actually be in love with a possession? Researchers at Arizona State University say it’s possible. It’s normal for people to become attached to objects that they believe convey their sense of self. But after conducting interviews with car owners, gun owners and computer owners, the researchers described a phenomenon they dubbed “material possession love,” in which a person “becomes emotionally attached to possessions as real substitutes in what resembles a human relationship.” The researchers found that those who exhibited this kind of love for their material possessions spent significantly more time and money nurturing and lavishing them with add-ons and extra services. In fact, they found that gun owners on average spent six times more money on their weapons than on others, while computer owners spent about twice as much on their gadgets as they did on others. But the study did more than just equate love with the amount of money spent on a person or thing. Extensive interviews with participants at a car show revealed that many of them treated their cars like people and fashioned real, emotional relationships with them. For example, one car show participant named his car “Maybelline” and said he spends more time with the car than with people. Another participant knew everything about his beloved car–he knew by heart her date and place of manufacturing, vehicle identification number and a timeline of all her previous owners. Another car owner described the day he bought it in “love-at-first-sight terms”– he spent all the money he had on the car and even asked to borrow money from his dad. But what makes the study so interesting is that this kind of possession love spanned a variety of interests. “We went into this just looking at automobiles, but found it was a generalizable phenomenon,” said John Lastovicka, the
