The state of Texas is taking a bold step towards protecting online privacy. Governor Rick Perry has signed HB 2268, a first-in-the-nation law that requires state and local law enforcement agents to seek a search warrant before accessing and reading Texans’ private email communications. The new law takes effect immediately. According to current federal law, prosecutors only need a warrant to read your email if they’re looking at unread communications sent less than 180 days ago. This standard was set by the 1986 Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA), a bill written when most Americans – senators and congressmen included – had no real access to email or desire to ever use it. Because HB 2268 is a state law, only Texans are protected from having their emails searched – and again, they’re only protected against local and state searches. Still, progress is being made on a national version of the law. In April, the United States Senate Judiciary Committee passed an amendment to the ECPA that would close the email loophole. A companion bill was introduced in the House of Representatives by a bipartisan group of congressmen, suggesting that Washington may finally be serious about protecting our privacy online.
A bank has just been robbed. The only evidence left behind is grainy security camera footage – detectives have a blurry face, but nothing else to go off of. The photo gets enhanced and run through a database. A few drama-filled moments later, the computer spits out the name and address of a suspect. This may sound like a terrible plot from an episode (every episode?) of CSI: Miami. But it’s also happening every day in police departments across the country. According to the Washington Post, police officers in 26 states are empowered to use facial recognition software in conjunction with a database of driver’s license photos to track down witnesses, verify IDs, and learn more about potential suspects. Over 120 million Americans appear in these facial recognition systems nationwide. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never been arrested for a crime before – if you drive, the police already know what you look like. Show up in the wrong camera and the fuzz will be able to find you within hours. Not all states let the police search through photo databases of private citizens. Oregon, Washington, New York and eight other states restrict police access to face-recognition systems. California, meanwhile, does not have a facial-recognition system in place. Currently, most police officers do not need a warrant to run your picture or likeness through a law enforcement database, so long as doing so has a legitimate purpose. Police can analyze security camera footage stills and even Facebook photos to help crack difficult cases. The American Civil Liberties Union has long opposed facial recognition technology for “its potential to finally and decisively put an end to the possibility of anonymity in public.” Of course, given how muted public response was to revelations that the government is spying on all our Internet communications, America may very well respond to the threat with another big yawn.
Imagine getting into a minor fender bender on the way to work. After checking your license and registration, the police officer on the scene starts rifling through your phone, checking your most recent text messages and your call log, all to make sure being distracted your phone wasn’t the cause of the crash. An abuse of police power? Not in New Jersey. A new law proposed by State Sen. James Holzapfel (R-Brick) would empower cops to seize drivers’ phones so long as “reasonable grounds” existed to suggest a driver may have been distracted. Distracted driving is quickly becoming an epidemic on the road – even hands-free texting has been found to be as dangerous as drunk driving – but for police, proving a fender bender was caused by an errant text message can be difficult. Of course, that fact is by legal design: There are serious questions as to whether this new law would pass constitutional muster. “Our state and federal constitution generally require probable cause before authorizing a search, particularly when it comes to areas that contain highly personal information with cellphones,” said Alexander Shalom of the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey. “The legislature cannot authorize searches unless there is probable cause.” This article was written by Fox Van Allen and originally appeared on Techlicious.
Facebook announced that it will no longer offer advertisers the ability to place Sponsored Stories, controversial advertisements that turn your social media activity into a commercial. Sponsored Stories are a way for advertisers to take your actions on Facebook and pay to share them with the world. Naturally, though, companies are uninterested in your old photos and mundane updates – they’re only interested in promoting when you check in to businesses like Starbucks, or otherwise Like their pages. For a few pennies each, a corporation can make sure all your friends know that you Like Twinkies, Nutella, Ford vehicles or anything else you’ve ever shared on Facebook involving a corporate brand. Advertisers know your friends value your opinions, so they’re willing to spend money to make your favorable opinions on their brands better known, even if it causes you great personal embarrassment. Don’t go hitting your favorite brands with a flurry of Likes just yet, though: Sponsored Stories, like a bad rash, aren’t actually going away entirely. “Sponsored stories as an idea doesn’t go away. Sponsored stories as a product goes away,” explained Facebook Product Marketing Director Brian Boland to Ad Age. Instead of Sponsored Stories, Facebook will now offer a more comprehensive type of ad. The fact that you Like McDonald’s may be featured, but it’ll be mentioned at the bottom of a larger ad to add “social context.” Ultimately, this change could make your actions on Facebook even more valuable to advertisers, so if you value your privacy, now is the time to take action. There’s no way to stop seeing your friends used as advertising fodder (short of sharing this news, naturally), but you can stop Facebook from using your own name and likeness to sell third-party products. Check out our Comprehensive Guide to Facebook Privacy Settings to learn how to opt out. This article was written by Fox Van Allen and originally appeared on Techlicious.
If you or your family has made a commitment to eat better and healthier, then congratulations – you’ve taken the first step towards creating a new, happier you. The journey won’t be easy, but you’re not alone: There are plenty of great free apps that can help you whip your diet into shape and cut out foods you may not even realize are dangerously unhealthy. Here are our favorites for making sure we eat healthy. ShopWell One of the best ways to lose weight and feel healthier in general is to commit to making healthier food choices. Swap out that white bread for slower digesting wheat. Trade that soda at snacktime for a lower-calorie sports drink. Each small change adds up in a big way over the long term. Finding these kinds of healthy alternatives isn’t always easy. That’s why Paul Gifford, Elliott Grant, and Scott Golubock created ShopWell, an app that makes it easy to compare similar foods and make the best choices possible. Before you can start using it, you’ll be asked to provide a login and answer a series of questions about your personal eating preferences. ShopWell learns from each answer to create a personalized “best foods” list. Each time you use Shopwell to take a picture of a barcode in the supermarket, the app will score the product from 0 to 100 according to your dietary preferences. Healthier alternatives will be automatically suggested, along with user-supplied ratings to make sure eating healthy tastes good. And once you make your selection, you can add your choice to an in-app shopping list so you don’t leave the store without it. ShopWell is a powerful, fully featured app that makes grocery shopping just a little bit better informed. Because when it comes to healthy eating, knowledge is power – and slimming. Price: Free on iTunes, Android users should try Fooducate which is free on the Google Play Store (and on iTunes) HealthyOut I try to eat as healthy as I can, but when you’re on the go as much as I am, it can be tricky.
Ever wonder what your dog is up to while you’re away from home? Does he spend most of the day sleeping? Is he getting enough exercise? Is he sick? Unfortunately, your dog can’t call or text you to let you know when something is wrong. But a new device called Whistle can – it’s a complete activity monitor, much like the FitBit, designed specially for man’s best friend. Whistle itself is a tiny, light-weight metallic disk that attaches to your dog’s collar. It uses a built-in accelerometer to determine whether your pet is asleep, out for a walk, and even when your pet decides to take an jump into the pool on a hot day. All the data is recorded and viewable using an included iPhone app. Whistle tracks your pet’s long-term activity trends and compares them to the average for other dogs, so you can know at a glance whether Fido needs more exercise. You can share this data with friends or your vet, who may be able to diagnose serious problems with your pet based on changes in its behavior. The device itself comes equipped with a 10-day battery, so Whistle will spend far more time on your dog’s collar than on a charger. And don’t worry if it starts to rain or if your dog goes for a swim – Whistle is waterproof. Whistle is now available for pre-order at the company’s website for $99.95; the device will ship later this summer. For now, Whistle is only compatible with the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, though according to Whistle Labs, Android functionality is “coming soon.” This article was written by Fox Van Allen and originally appeared on Techlicious.
Have you been feeling a bit stressed out lately? According to a soon-to-be-released research study conducted by Loughborough University in the U.K., reading and sending e-mails, especially those that interrupt your work, significantly raises levels of stress in your body. As part of a study, researchers monitored 30 government employees as they went about their day, measuring certain markers of increased stress. Scientists found that 83% of those studied felt e-mail-related anxiety, with symptoms including a quicker pulse, increased blood pressure, and higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Stress levels were highest when inboxes are at their fullest. The study found that there’s a way to find relief from the e-mail stress: Get your inbox organized. Using folders to organize e-mails and using e-mail managing apps to reduce clutter help lower anxiety by making it feel like you have more control over the communication medium. You should also make an effort to avoid multitasking – that is, reading e-mails and answering phone calls at the same time – overloading your brain will only increase stress levels. “The brain can only deal with eight to 12 tasks at any one time and if you can’t shut those tasks down you start to become overloaded and fatigued,” explained Professor Tom Jackson.
Maybe it’s because we’ve been lamenting the possible loss of the non-self-driving car as a music listening pod, or just because I have spent lots of time outdoors of late — or maybe it’s because we all just have so much information and noise coming at us these days, but whatever the reason, I am entranced by the idea of the “world’s quietest room.” The room, in Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Orfield Labs, is so quiet that clapping your hands sounds weird, because you hear almost zero reflected sound. All you hear is the sound of two hands clapping, to put a twist on the popular zen koan. It’s “anechoic,” which means it is against producing echoes, which is why Guinness Book of World Records anointed this room the “world’s quietest place.” Documentary filmmaker Sam Green, pictured above with his microphone in said room, reported on the room at a Pop-Up Magazine event a couple of weeks ago at San Francisco Symphony Hall. Evolver.fm tracked him down, and he helped clear up a rumor we’d heard that not only was this room the quietest, but that Prince used to intern there: “In my talk, I mentioned that the building that Orfield Labs is in is an illustrious place,” responded Green. “Years ago, there was a recording studio there, and in addition to being the place where “Funkytown” and “Blood on the Tracks” were recorded, Prince was an intern there. Steve Orfield told me that. In addition, he said that many years later, Prince had tried to buy the building, but the owner refused to sell. So it’s not quite accurate to say that Prince was an intern at Orfield Labs.” Yes, but it is accurate to say that Prince once interned at all, which is pretty amazing on its own — and that he interned in the same building that now houses the world’s quietest place.
Be careful what links you click on Facebook. A gang of international cybercrooks has resurrected a six-year-old Trojan virus named Zeus, using it to harvest personal information and drain unsuspecting victims’ bank accounts. It appears as if the virus threat is being distributed via Facebook groups, especially through spam advertisements offering discount merchandise, counterfeit designer wear, or some similar Facebook scam. The virus made its first reappearance in February of this year, with incidents of infection rapidly growing month-to-month. Once Zeus infects your computer, the virus lays in wait until you use an online banking account. When you do, the malicious code stores your login and password, using it to empty your coffers. The virus can collect other personal information to sell, as well. According to Malloy Labs, this data eventually makes its way to a group known as the Russian Business Network, a gang of cybercriminals involved in child pornography, identity theft and other illegal activities. The virus was first discovered by security experts in 2007, so most modern anti-virus software suites should be able to easily detect and stop the threat of Zeus. That said, the fact that this threat is spreading so rapidly indicates that many of us still let our computers go unprotected. Don’t be a victim. Take a look at our Computer Security Buying Guide if your device is currently unprotected. If you already have antivirus software loaded, take a moment to update it against the latest threats. And don’t think that just because you have a Mac, you’re safe – Apple computers need anti-virus protection too. This article was written by Fox Van Allen and originally appeared on Techlicious.
Well, that didn’t take long: Just hours after software developer MiKandi launched Tits & Glass (link NSFW), the first ever pornographic app for Google Glass, Google has responded by flat out banning all adult apps for the device. Glass, set to be released to the public later this year, is a head-mounted computer device that allows you to record video and share experiences as you see and live them. The app in question uses these capabilities to record sexual partners and situations, and then shares them on a website where anonymous visitors can rate and comment on the pictures and video. (MORE: Yes, Of Course There Will Be Google Glass Porn) Google’s move isn’t just to keep up a family-friendly appearance, or to mirror Apple’s similar policy against pornographic apps. Privacy advocates already have serious concerns about Glass’s ability to record people without their permission and use facial recognition software to identify strangers. That concern only gets magnified when Glass enters the bedroom. Certainly, it’s not hard to imagine someone using Glass to put nude photos of you online without your consent or to create revenge porn. Jesse Adams, the CEO of the company behind Tits & Glass, isn’t ready to give up on his fledgling app, even in the face of strong opposition from Google. “Although the app is still live and people are using it, at this point we must make changes to the app in order to comply with the new policies,” wrote Adams on his company blog. “Expect to see changes to the application tomorrow.” This article was written by Fox Van Allen and originally appeared on Techlicious.
Getting ready for grilling season, but don’t think your existing grill is up to the task of another summer of outdoor entertaining? Don’t fear, because regardless of your budget or needs, we have a grill recommendation that’s perfect for you. And if you do already have a grill, we have some high-tech accessories that will make grilling a little bit easier. Best outdoor grills Cuisinart Cuisinart CGG-200 All-Foods 12,000-BTU Portable Outdoor Tabletop Propane Gas Grill If you don’t have room for a full grill or you just want something that’s easily portable—or just suited for a small space—you may like this propane-powered model from Cuisinart which can be quickly and easily set up anywhere. Despite its compact size, it has a 240 square inches of grilling space, and will easily cook enough for 8. If you want something that’s more a freestanding grill, there’s a stand accessory that turns this compact appliance into a more traditional grill. Price: $199 at Cuisinartwebstore.com or $162 at Amazon Coleman Coleman Road Trip Grill LXE Looking for the perfect grill to take on your next road trip, camping expedition or tailgating party? Then the Coleman Road Trip Grill is what you’re after. The legs of this lightweight propane grill fold up neatly underneath it for easy transportation. And if you want to do more than just grill, the Coleman also has a griddle and a stove grate, which means it can handle just about any cooking challenge you want to throw at it. Price: $189.99 at Coleman.com or $149.99 at Amazon Weber Weber 741001 Silver One-Touch 22-1/2-Inch Kettle Grill When you think “grill,” there’s a good chance that the image that comes to mind is one of Weber’s ubiquitous kettle grills. They offer everything you need in a basic charcoal grill: plenty of cooking space, a conveniently compact size, and an easy to stomach price tag. We like the 22″ model as a happy medium between too big and not big enough—with 363 square inches of cooking space, or enough for about 15 hamburger patties, we’re sure you’ll be able to handle your next

Gas prices are sky high and show little sign of tumbling down to reasonable levels any time soon—but that doesn’t mean there’s no way for you to save. If you pay close attention to where you stop to refuel, you could save cents on every gallon. And while that might not sound like much, it can add up to a bundle. Below we’ve listed several apps that can help you locate the cheapest gas in the area as well as track the gas mileage you actually get. GasBuddy You can view a map showing local gas prices or sort listings by distance or pricing with GasBuddy. Pricing information is user reported, but strikes us as both accurate and quickly updated. By posting current pricing info, users earn points to enter a weekly gas giveaway, which definitely helps the listings stay fresh. In addition to the free app you can visit their website to check out additional features, like a road trip cost calculator. Price: Free at iTunes, Google Play, BlackBerry App World and the Windows Phone app store. Gas Guru This app from YellowPages works similarly to GasBuddy, providing data on gas prices in the area in either a map format or on a list. But instead of relying on reported prices like GasBuddy does, Gas Guru gets its information from OPIS (Oil Price Information Service). And if you are looking for something other than fuel, Gas Guru can also provide information on other nearby locations, including restaurants, coffee, auto repair, ATMs, and roadside assistance. Price: Free at iTunes and Google Play Gas Cubby This app won’t tell you where the lowest prices are, but it can help you save money nevertheless. Gas Cubby helps you keep track of when you refuel, how much you’re spending, and what kind of mileage you’re getting. Additionally, the app lets you track maintenance dates and costs and will even remind you when maintenance is past due. Price: Free at iTunes or $1.99 premium version (no ads) at iTunes aCar If you’re an Android user who wants the features of Gas Cubby, what you’re looking for is aCar. It will keep track

Appointments, playdate pickups, medications, game schedules — every caretaker needs a safe place to store and share information. Most family organization tools are designed to meet the needs of a traditional nuclear family—parents and kids living under one roof. But not all families fit that mold. There are grown children taking care of parents, divorced parents with joint custody and people who want to track their pet’s care. Fortunately, there are apps for every type of family. Here are my picks. For traditional families AboutOne knows that there’s a lot more to keeping your family organized than keeping a family calendar. The service goes beyond with easy ways to store medical information and your home inventory, share pictures, notes and videos and save important documents—receipts, college applications and family member care sheets. And, you can manage everything with the AboutOne app on your iOS, Android, Windows Phone or Windows 8 device. The basic service is free and comes with 1GB of document storage, room for 6 family members and contacts and emergency management. For $5 per month you get 5GB of data, 10 family members and, when available, a family calendar that syncs with popular calendar programs. Price: Free at iTunes, Google Play and Windows Phone app store For divorced parents Managing the lives of busy children between two homes can be challenging. But Two Happy Homes makes it a little easier with a communication and organization service built specifically for co-parenting. Parents keep a joint calendar and contact list, can send private notes and share medical information, documents and pictures. There’s even a place to track and pay expenses online. The basic service is free and includes the calendar, notes, expense tracking and 10 contacts and documents. For $14.98 per month, you get unlimited documents and contacts, plus medical information sharing, and payment of expenses through PayPal. For adult children taking care of parents When parents need the help of their adult children, caretaking can become a family affair. CareZone helps ease the way with a free service that lets family members share care. There’s a journal to record what’s going on, notes
