Every so often the folks at TIME compile a list of the All Time 100 (Insert something) since 1923, the year TIME was founded. Some time last year I was asked what my 5 favorite gadgets of all time were and I happily obliged with this list. Little did I know that it was precursor to the whopping All Time 100 Gadgets list that was published today over at the dot com. Many of what you’ll find are firsts or doodads that really nailed it. And they’re mostly what you would call “personal” gadgets. These lists aren’t perfect and they’re really not meant to be. I’m sure I missed something but what I don’t know.

News of Facebook and Skype hopping into bed together broke the other week but now it’s official. Skype just announced that Facebook’s News Feed and Phonebook would be integrated into the latest update of Skype for Windows. Sorry, Mac owners, we’re left in the dark on this one. Besides News Feed and Phonebook integration, Skype users can call and SMS their Facebook besties on their landline or cell phone. And, as always, Skype-to-Skpye calls between Facebook friends is free. A beta trial of group video calling is also bundled into the new update. Get thee to the new Skype.

PSA- Netflix instant streaming will become a native app on the PlayStation 3 on October 18th. In addition to that, Netflix and Dolby announced this morning that the PS3 will be the first with support for 5.1-channel surround sound. Additional improvements for Netflix on PS3 are as follows: • Movies and TV shows from Netflix will be accessible from PS3’s XMB menu under a new Netflix icon under the Video category. To access Netflix, PS3 owners will need to sign-in with their PlayStation®Network account. • Support for Dolby Digital Plus 5.1-channel surround sound will enable users to experience premium-quality audio. • A new user interface, including the recently added search functionality, will deliver a much richer and faster browsing experience, making it easier to find the specific titles you’re looking for or to discover new content. • Some movies and TV shows will be viewable in 1080i resolution, offering an enhanced visual experience as more consumers adopt HDTVs. • The amount of time to start playback will be improved. • An increasing number of movies and TV shows will be viewable with subtitles or alternate audio tracks.

The head of marketing for Windows Phone in the UK has unofficially confirmed via Twitter that support for Zune on the Mac is coming. The update has since been removed but Microsoft has confirmed that a public beta will be out this year allowing Windows Phone 7 users to sync “select content” with their Macs. Whether or not that means full support for the Zune on Mac is on the horizon is still up in the air.
Felix Baumgartner will have to put a hold on his attempted jump from the stratosphere. In a statement released by Red Bull, the Red Bull Stratos project is on hold pending litigation. One “Mr. Hogan” claims to “own certain rights to the project”. The statement is below: Red Bull GmbH and Red Bull North America, Inc. have decided to stop the Red Bull Stratos program with immediate effect. Felix Baumgartner had been scheduled to undertake a stratospheric balloon flight to 120,000 feet and attempt a freefall jump that would, for the first time, reach supersonic speeds as well as deliver valuable scientific data. Despite the fact that many other people over the past 50 years have tried to break Colonel (Ret.) Joe Kittinger’s record, and that other individuals have sought to work with Red Bull in an attempt to break his record, Mr. Hogan claims to own certain rights to the project and filed a multi million dollar lawsuit earlier this year in a Californian court. Red Bull has acted appropriately in its prior dealings with Mr. Hogan, and will demonstrate this as the case progresses. Due to the lawsuit, we have decided to stop the project until this case has been resolved.

A special trilogy pack with never before seen footage will be included and today we have a peak at one of them.
Apps have been trickling into the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace over the last few weeks but I just noticed a handful of notable apps that were demoed in the weeks leading up to today’s announcement made available in the last 24 hours. As of 1:54AM ET, eBay (Free), Flixster (Free) and a handful of games are available in the Marketplace. Said games include THQ’s Star Wars: Battle for Hoth ($4.99), PopCap Games’ Bejeweled Live ($4.99) and Microsoft Game Studios’ Flowerz (Free), Hexic Rush ($2.99), Twin Blades: The Reaping Vanguard ($2.99) and Rocket Riot ($6.99). All of the above titles are labeled as “Xbox Live” and I’ve personally been racking up Xbox Live achievements and boosting my gamerscore playing Flowerz over the last week or so. Sidenote: Sometime last week, I noticed an AT&T hub of sorts inside the Marketplace but it disappeared as quickly as it appeared.

Plans for a post-production 3D conversion for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 1 have been cancelled according to a statement released by Warner Bros. today. “We will not have a completed 3D version of the film within our release date window. Despite everyone’s best efforts, we were unable to convert the film in its entirety and meet the highest standards of quality. We do not want to disappoint fans who have long-anticipated the conclusion of this extraordinary journey.” The film’s director, David Yates adds: “This decision, which we completely support, underscores the fact that Warner Bros. has always put quality first.” Thank you, WB.
Earlier in the week, we picked up on a trending topic over at the XDA forums that caused quite a stir in the Android community – the G2 was unrootable. According to the New America Foundation, the G2 has an embedded chip that resets the G2’s software back to “stock” once the device has been rebooted. T-Mobile has responded to the situation with the following statement: As pioneers in Android-powered mobile devices, T-Mobile and HTC strive to support innovation. The T-Mobile G2 is a powerful and highly customizable Android-powered smartphone, which customers can personalize and make their own, from the look of their home screen to adding their favorite applications and more. The HTC software implementation on the G2 stores some components in read-only memory as a security measure to prevent key operating system software from becoming corrupted and rendering the device inoperable. There is a small subset of highly technical users who may want to modify and re-engineer their devices at the code level, known as “rooting,” but a side effect of HTC’s security measure is that these modifications are temporary and cannot be saved to permanent memory. As a result the original code is restored.
It must be fall. Microsoft is prepping a new Xbox Live update that will launch just before Kinect hits the market on November 4. Back in June at E3, Microsoft demoed the ESPN channel and that will launch alongside the new update. Aside from that and all the Kinect shenanigans, here are 8 “under the hood” features: • Improved voice quality – the audio codec is being updated to improve Xbox LIVE Party chat audio quality. So grab your friends and jump into a multiplayer game, catch a big sports event, watch a movie or do all three. • Improved experience for changing your Gamertag – choosing a new Gamertag? If the Gamertag you’re looking for is already taken, your Avatar will spin a wheel and we will provide five other Gamertag suggestions at a time for you to choose from. • Streamlined in-dashboard virtual keyboard – we’ve taken the existing QWERTY keyboard in-dash and made it easier to use for scenarios that involve repeated text entry, for example when signing up for LIVE within the dashboard. • Improved Xbox LIVE Marketplace UI and browse experience – the Games Marketplace has been re-organized to provide streamlined access to the games and content you want, reducing the number of steps it takes to get to a download. • Avatar changes – we’ve made your Avatars slightly more proportional so you can better play Kinect games • Easier to get on a wireless network – trying to connect to a wireless network? With the next update, you’ll see a list of all the wireless networks within range when you go into network settings. From there, you’ll be able to select a new network or further configure the network you’re connected to. • Ability to sign-out other controllers in the sign-in UI – we’re adding the ability to sign-out profiles on other controllers in the sign-in UI within the Guide. This is especially useful when playing games like Rock Band. • New browse experience for 100% completed games – you spent a lot

Canon’s Rob Zuurbier brings up a valid point in this promo video for the Pixma line of printers – most photography and image sharing takes place digitally. When was the last time you printed a photo or held a photo that wasn’t on someone’s phone? Although you don’t see much of the printers in this video, it definitely has a lot of folks talking. What’s more amazing are the capabilities of the 5D MkII. Shot at 5000fps, the DSLR captures the paint being bounced off a speaker in a poetic sort of manner. Clarification: As pointed out in comments, the 5D MkII only shoots at 30fps. The original text is a bit misleading but it was not implied that the 5D MkII is capable of shooting 5,000fps. Apologies for the confusion. Forget the printer, I want to get myself a 5D MkII!
This is getting redundant and completely obnoxious. The WSJ is yet again reporting that Apple and Verizon will release a CDMA version of the iPhone in early 2011 and that production will begin later this year. But this coming from the same reporter who wrote back in March that Verizon would be getting the iPhone this fall. Following a Bloomberg report earlier this summer it’s getting harder and harder to take these rumors seriously but we can’t ignore them either. Then again, Verizon said they had “no plans to carry the iPhone in the immediate future” but that was in June. One more thing…Apple is developing new hardware for the next model, says the WSJ. Duh. But it won’t be the same form factor as the iPhone 4. Hmm…

Following up on our earlier coverage of Logitech’s plans to bundle a HD video conferencing service into Google TV, we now have the official details. During today’s press conference it was revealed that Logitech’s HD video service Logitech Vid HD would come preinstalled as an Android app (Android Market for Google TV will not launch until 2011) on Revue set-top boxes. The service will work between Google TV-enabled sets, as well as PCs and Macs with the Logitech Vid HD software installed. Calls won’t interrupt your TV viewing, we’re told. The service is free (take that, Cisco!) but you will need to purchase a Revue and separate HD webcam that’s been built specifically for Google TV. When we spoke to Eric Kintz from Logitech earlier he mentioned something about hardware compatibility and what could or couldn’t support certain protocols. But he was on his cell phone and the signal kept cutting out. I’m assuming he was on an iPhone. The new camera has a wide-angle lens and the ability to pan, tilt and zoom. It even includes noise cancellation and stereo audio and will retail for $149.99. The $299.99 Revue bundle includes a keyboard (integrated touch and directional pad), one IR blaster, and an HDMI cable. A separate app for Android and iPhone will also be released. You can also purchase DiNovo Mini controller specific to Revue for $129.99. Dish Network subscribers will be able to purchase the Revue bundle for $179.
Details are scant at the moment but I just had a quick conversation with Logitech’s video business VP and GM, Eric Kintz about Cisco’s video teleconferencing announcement. “We congratulate Cisco on bringing video calling to the living room – it’s a great day for consumers and the video communications industry. We’re excited to introduce our own HD video calling offering for the living room with our Logitech Revue with Google TV announcement later today. We believe consumers want the best and most seamless experience which means HD video calling not only from TV to TV, but also TV to PC or Mac (or vice versa). We also believe consumers will want a free service and one that is integrated into a broader entertainment experience, which is why Logitech is excited to introduce an integrated HD video calling offering with Google TV.” And now it’s official.

Expect to see a lot of news today on video teleconferencing. Cisco has just announced the ūmi consumer HD video conferencing system. All it needs is a HDTV (connected via HDMI) and broadband connection to work. Calls will be streamed in 1080p and recorded at 720p/30fps, so you can share via Facebook, YouTube, etc. Based on your connection, the video quality will bounce between 1080p, 720p and 480p. The system consists of a camera, console and remote. The camera itself doesn’t seem half bad. It has optical zoom, AF auto exposure, auto WB and even pans and tilts.

It’s still a bit early to sound the alarm but it appears that the new G2 is unrootable. According to a report by the New America Foundation, the G2 has an embedded chip that sniffs out modifications to the OS and wipes them clean upon reboot. In other words, you won’t be able to install a cooked ROM that has Wi-Fi calling baked in, for instance. Discussion on the topic over at XDA is hot and heavy but we’ll definitely monitor this as things may change now that the phone is available to all. If true, this would be a major blow to the Android community. Apple might not be too far behind either.
