NEW YORK (AP) — It’s a sight that can trigger dread: the low-battery message on your cellphone when there’s no charger around. But New Yorkers needing a little extra juice will have some new options this summer. The city is teaming up with AT&T to install 25 solar-powered charging stations in parks across the five boroughs. The charges will provide a free boost to dying phones and other mobile devices. The solar technology in the “Street Charge” stations can fully charge up to 30 phones before it needs its own recharge – even with cloud cover and during the night. The idea came about after Superstorm Sandy. The storm left New Yorkers desperately searching for power to contact friends and loved ones.

BEIJING (AP) — A Chinese university has built the world’s fastest supercomputer, almost doubling the speed of the U.S. machine that previously claimed the top spot and underlining China’s rise as a science and technology powerhouse. The semiannual TOP500 listing of the world’s fastest supercomputers released Monday says the Tianhe-2 developed by the National University of Defense Technology in central China’s Changsha city is capable of sustained computing of 33.86 petaflops per second. That’s the equivalent of 33,860 trillion calculations per second. The Tianhe-2, which means Milky Way-2, knocks the U.S. Energy Department’s Titan machine off the No. 1 spot. It achieved 17.59 petaflops per second. Supercomputers are used for complex work such as modeling weather systems, simulating nuclear explosions and designing jetliners. It’s the second time a Chinese computer has been named the world’s fastest. In November 2010, the Tianhe-2′s predecessor, Tianhe-1A, had that honor before Japan’s K computer overtook it a few months later on the TOP500 list, a ranking curated by three computer scientists at universities in the U.S. and Germany. The Tianhe-2 shows how China is leveraging rapid economic growth and sharp increases in research spending to join the United States, Europe and Japan in the global technology elite. “Most of the features of the system were developed in China, and they are only using Intel for the main compute part,” TOP500 editor Jack Dongarra, who toured the Tianhe-2 facility in May, said in a news release. “That is, the interconnect, operating system, front-end processors and software are mainly Chinese.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Netflix is going to start running original television series from Dreamworks Animation. Financial terms were not disclosed. Netflix Inc. says the multi-year agreement is its biggest deal ever for original first-run content and includes more than 300 hours of new programming. It expands on an existing relationship between the companies. For Dreamworks, the transaction announced Monday is part of a major initiative to expand its television production and distribution worldwide. Netflix has been adding original programming to its roster of movies, and debuted the original series “House of Cards” on Feb. 1. It has also increased its focus on children’s programming in a move seen as taking a different tack than traditional premium pay TV channels such as HBO, Starz and Showtime, whose original shows are tailored more to adults. In December Netflix announced it will offer Disney movies, starting with films released in 2016. It declined to make a similar deal for the rights to Sony movies starting in 2016, which was kept by Starz. The new Dreamworks shows will be inspired by characters from its hit franchises like “Shrek” and “Kung Fu Panda” and upcoming feature films as well as the Classic Media library that Dreamworks Animation SKG Inc. bought last year. The television shows will be commercial free. The first series is expected to begin airing in 2014 and will be shown in the 40 countries in which Netflix operates. In February the companies announced their first ever Netflix original series for kids based on the film “Turbo” that is coming out in movie theaters next month. The original series, called “Turbo F.A.S.T.,” will be shown starting in December. Next year Netflix customers in the U.S. and Latin America will also have access to some of Dreamworks’ newest films, including “The Croods” and “Turbo.” Netflix shares rose $12.29, or 5.7 percent, to $226.28 in morning trading. Dreamworks shares rose $1.69, or 7.4 percent, to $24.50.

NEW YORK (AP) — Apple says it received between 4,000 and 5,000 requests from U.S. law enforcement for customer data for the six months ended in May. The company, like some other businesses, had asked the U.S government to be able to share how many requests it received related to national security and how it handled them. Those requests were made as part of Prism, the recently revealed highly classified National Security Agency program that seizes records from Internet companies. Prism appears to do what its name suggests. Like a triangular piece of glass, Prism takes large beams of data and helps the government find discrete, manageable strands of information. Prism was revealed this month by The Washington Post and Guardian newspapers, and has touched off the latest round in a decade-long debate over what limits to impose on government eavesdropping, which the Obama administration says is essential to keep the nation safe. Apple Inc. said that between 9,000 and 10,000 accounts or devices were specified in data requests between Dec. 1, 2012, and May 31 from federal, state and local authorities and included both criminal investigations and national security matters. It said that the most common form of request came from police investigating robberies and other crimes, searching for missing children, trying to locate a patient with Alzheimer’s disease, or hoping to prevent a suicide. The company also made clear how much access the government has. “We do not provide any government agency with direct access to our servers, and any government agency requesting customer content must get a court order,” Apple said in a statement on its website. Apple explained that its legal team evaluates each request and that it delivers “the narrowest possible set of information to the authorities” when deemed appropriate. The company said that it has refused some requests in the past. Facebook Inc. has said that it received between 9,000 and 10,000 requests for data from all government agencies in the second half of last year. The social media company said fewer than 19,000

(CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand) — Google is launching Internet-beaming antennas into the stratosphere aboard giant, jellyfish-shaped balloons with the lofty goal of getting the entire planet online. Eighteen months in the works, the top-secret project was announced Saturday in New Zealand, where up to 50 volunteer households are already beginning to receive the Internet briefly on their home computers via translucent helium balloons that sail by on the wind 12 miles above Earth. While the project is still in the very early testing stages, Google hopes eventually to launch thousands of the thin, polyethylene-film inflatables and bring the Internet to some of the more remote parts of the globe, narrowing the digital divide between the 2.2 billion people who are online and the 4.8 billion who aren’t. If successful, the technology might allow countries to leapfrog the expense of installing fiber-optic cable, dramatically increasing Internet usage in places such as Africa and Southeast Asia. “It’s a huge moonshot, a really big goal to go after,” said project leader Mike Cassidy. “The power of the Internet is probably one of the most transformative technologies of our time.” The so-called Project Loon was developed in the clandestine Google X lab that also came up with a driverless car and Google’s Web-surfing eyeglasses. Google would not say how much it is investing in the project or how much customers will be charged when it is up and running. The first person to get Google Balloon Internet access this week was Charles Nimmo, a farmer and entrepreneur in the small town of Leeston who signed up for the experiment. Technicians attached a bright red, basketball-size receiver resembling a giant Google map pin to the outside of his home. In a successful preliminary test, Nimmo received the Internet for about 15 minutes before the 49-foot-wide transmitting balloon he was relying on floated out of range. The first thing he did was check the weather forecast because he wanted to find out if it was a good time for “crutching” his sheep, or removing the wool around

LONDON (AP) — Phone call logs, credit card records, emails, Skype chats, Facebook message, and more: The precise nature of the NSA’s sweeping surveillance apparatus has yet to be confirmed. But given the revelations spilling out into the media, there hardly seems a single aspect of daily life that isn’t somehow subject to spying by the U.S. agency. For some, it’s a matter of indifference who or what is rifling through their electronic records. Others, mindful of spy agencies’ history of abuse, are more concerned. Here are some basic tips to avoid having your personal life turned into an intelligence report: ENCRYPT YOUR EMAILS Emails sent across the Web are like postcards. In some cases, they’re readable by anyone standing between you and its recipient. That can include your webmail company, your Internet service provider and whoever is tapped into the fiber optic cable passing your message around the globe – not to mention a parallel set of observers on the recipient’s side of the world. To beat the snoops, experts recommend encryption, which scrambles messages in transit, so they’re unreadable to anyone trying to intercept them. Techniques vary, but a popular one is called PGP, short for “Pretty Good Privacy.” PGP is effective enough that the U.S. government tried to block its export in the mid-1990s, arguing that it was so powerful it should be classed as a weapon. Disadvantages: Encryption can be clunky. And to work, both parties have to be using it. USE TOR Like emails, your travels around the Internet can easily be tracked by anyone standing between you and the site you’re trying to reach. TOR, short for “The Onion Router,” helps make your traffic anonymous by bouncing it through a network of routers before spitting it back out on the other side. Each trip through a router provides another layer of protection, thus the onion reference. Originally developed by the U.S. military, TOR is believed to work pretty well if you want to hide your traffic from, let’s say, eavesdropping by your local Internet

NEW YORK (AP) — A top Apple Inc. executive described as Steve Jobs’ right-hand man took the witness stand at a Manhattan price-fixing trial and denied scheming with major book publishers to drive up the cost of electronic books. Eddy Cue was questioned about meetings he had in 2009 with chief executives of publishing houses about what they called their “Amazon problem” – the discounted $9.99 price that Amazon.com set for e-books. “They expressed to us that they wanted higher prices,” he said. Cue was the chief negotiator in deals with the publishers that allowed them to set prices as high as $14.99 for sales in Apple’s new iBookstore. But he denied that the deals were calculated to force Amazon into similar agreements that would raise its prices as well. (MORE: Apple Unveils New Version of OS X, New Computers, iOS 7 and More) Jobs closely monitored the negotiations but was “indifferent” about the outcome for Amazon, Cue testified. However, when asked if Jobs knew that there was a chance that once the iBookstore launched, publishers would withhold best sellers and new releases from Amazon, he responded, “I believe so, sure. Smart guy.” Cue also claimed he had no knowledge that the publishers were colluding with each other as he negotiated with them, despite phone records showing their chief executives were in constant communication. “I don’t believe they were working together to do the deal I was working on,” Cue said. Cue, a senior vice president of Internet and Software Services at Apple, oversees the iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore and iCloud services. He testified at a trial stemming from an antitrust lawsuit brought last year by the Justice Department accusing Apple and the publishers of harming consumers by devising a plan that allowed publishers to convert retailers into “agents” who were restricted from lowering the publisher-set retail price. The arrangement guaranteed Apple a 30 percent commission on each e-book it sold. The five publishers settled with the government, but Apple took the case to trial, denying claims that its agreements

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Yahoo is trying to breathe new life into inactive email accounts by giving away the identifications beginning next month. The program announced Wednesday will give Web surfers an opportunity to claim a new handle that had previously been unavailable. It also represents a last chance for Yahoo users who haven’t logged in for at least a year to keep the address. Yahoo Inc. plans to release the inactive accounts unless the current owner logs in again before July 15. After that, the identifications will be available to all comers and will be ready to use again in mid-August. The Sunnyvale, Calif., company isn’t specifying how many emails are in the dead pool. A Yahoo spokeswoman predicted a substantial number of IDs will be freed up. The attempted revival of the dormant accounts coincides with Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer’s nearly yearlong effort to create a bigger buzz around an Internet pioneer that had fallen out of fashion. Yahoo’s headaches included the declining usage of its email service as more people embraced Google Inc.’s alternative, Gmail. Mayer, a longtime Google executive, has redesigned Yahoo’s email service, home page and Flickr photo service since her arrival in July 2012. She also made a major splash last month by striking a deal to buy the trendy blogging service, Tumblr, for $1.1 billion. Yahoo announced its plans to court new email users on Tumbler, which is particularly popular among teenagers and young adults. Yahoo is hoping that people who chose a new handle next month will frequent other online services run by the company and discover compelling features that keep them coming back. If that happens, Yahoo would have more opportunities to show them the advertising that brings in most of its revenue. Besides email, the account names can be used to log into other Yahoo services such as sports, weather and news.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tim and Chris Vanderhook think Myspace had it right – at one point. And they believe they’ve revived and improved that formula for success as the revamped first titan of social media debuts its latest incarnation. The Vanderhooks unveiled the new Myspace.com Wednesday, revealing a site focused on entertainment that combines social networking with streaming music. There are new features aimed at helping musicians, writers and other artists connect with their followers, an app and a radio function. “Today more than ever there’s this need for a creative ecosystem that kind of caters to the creative community and that’s both a social network and the streaming services attached,” Tim Vanderhook said. “For us when we looked at it, we really talked to a lot of artists and … they all said, `I use all these various platforms but none of them really do what we need.’ What they really needed, they explained to us, was a home.” The launch comes nearly two years after the Irvine, Calif.-based Specific Media owners teamed with Justin Timberlake to buy the ailing website for $35 million, a fraction of the $560 million News Corp. paid for it in 2005. The new owners briefed media this week in the run-up to release. Timberlake was not made available, but the company says he provides the strategic vision for the company and was the person behind the idea of focusing on the creative community. The Vanderhooks believe the previous owners made a mistake when they tried to compete with emerging force Facebook. At its peak, they believe Myspace was driven by a sense of discovery and sharing. Bands, for instance, would post songs, tour schedules and blogs for fans to follow. It was more direct than a website and gave users the first true sense of social media’s larger possibilities. “Everyone had a lot of fun on Myspace at one point,” Chris Vanderhook said. “It’s easy to kick it and say, oh, yeah, Myspace sucks now, but everyone had fun on Myspace before.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Using voice commands to send text messages and emails from behind the wheel, which is marketed as a safer alternative for drivers, actually is more distracting and dangerous than simply talking on a cellphone, a new AAA study found. Automakers have been trying to excite new-car buyers, especially younger ones, with dashboard infotainment systems that let drivers use voice commands do things like turning on windshield wipers, posting Facebook messages or ordering pizza. The pitch has been that hands-free devices are safer because they enable drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road. But talking on a hands-free phone isn’t significantly safer for drivers than talking on a hand-held phone, and using hands-free devices that translate speech into text is the most distracting of all, researchers found. Speech-to-text systems that enable drivers to send, scroll through, or delete email and text messages required greater concentration by drivers than other potentially distracting activities examined in the study like talking on the phone, talking to a passenger, listening to a book on tape or listening to the radio. The greater the concentration required to perform a task, the more likely a driver is to develop what researchers call “tunnel vision” or “inattention blindness.” Drivers will stop scanning the roadway or ignore their side and rearview mirrors. Instead, they look straight ahead, but fail to see what’s in front of them, like red lights and pedestrians. “People aren’t seeing what they need to see to drive. That’s the scariest part to me,” said Peter Kissinger, president and CEO of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the group’s safety research arm. “Police accident investigative reports are filled with comments like the `looked, but did not see.’ That’s what drivers tell them. We used to think they were lying, but now we know that’s actually true.” There are about 9 million cars and trucks on the road with infotainment systems, and that will jump to about 62 million vehicles by 2018, AAA spokeswoman Yolanda Cade said,

LOS ANGELES (AP) — It’s all about the games for Nintendo. Instead of a typical flashy presentation at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, the Japanese gaming giant opted to showcase several games for its Wii U system during a brief Tuesday presentation at its booth on the show floor of the gaming industry’s annual trade show. “Today is different,” Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime told those gathered inside the behemoth white structure. “It’s the reason you’re gathered here inside of our booth – standing instead of sitting – because it was our decision to minimize the time from when we said `good morning’ and you getting to play the game.” Nintendo showed off the cartoony strategy game “Pikmin 3,” anti-gravity racer “Mario Kart 8,” 2-D platformer “Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze,” 3-D platformer “Super Mario 3D World,” slick action sequel “Bayonetta 2″ and a speedier rendition of “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker” for the Wii U. For gamers who couldn’t make it to E3, the titles will be on display at more than 100 Best Buy Co. stores in North America this week. The company also flaunted – but didn’t allow attendees to play – a new installment in the fighting series “Super Smash Bros.” The new edition will feature such characters as Mario, Mega Man and the female yoga trainer from Wii Fit. The company has struggled since November with the launch of the Wii U, which features an innovative tablet-like controller yet graphics on par with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3. Nintendo Co. said it sold just 3.45 million units by the end of March, well below the company’s expectations. “We feel very good about this E3, and that’s because consumers buy hardware to play games, and we’re got a fantastic lineup of games that we’re showcasing,” Fils-Aime said after the event. During showy Monday presentations, competitors Microsoft and Sony hyped their respective next-generation consoles. Microsoft Corp. touted new games for the Xbox One, which it said will cost $499, while Sony Corp.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Worried about filling up your DVR? The nation’s largest cable TV provider, Comcast Corp., is unveiling a new, compact set-top box that does away with the hard drive and saves your TV shows online. The as-yet-unnamed box, running on a platform it calls X2, was unveiled Tuesday at the annual gathering of cable TV companies, The Cable Show, and will be available to customers later this year. Three times smaller than traditional set-top boxes, the box is one of many offerings from cable TV companies seeking to improve the living room experience. Time Warner Cable Inc. is also showing off an updated channel guide with personalized recommendations that it plans to roll out on new set-top boxes this year. Pay TV companies have faced criticism for offering hundreds of channels but providing clunky guides that make it difficult to find shows. As they seek to keep customers, cable providers are updating channel grids. Newer guides do a better job of showing off what’s available on-demand, what’s saved on the digital video recorder, and what’s on live TV. The X2′s channel guide acts more like a website than traditional channel guides. Customers can customize the view to include weather and road traffic apps. Program listings include movie ratings from Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a “buzz” meter showing how many posts from Twitter a particular show is getting each hour. The guide also displays video from the Web for the first time. “The whole look and feel is meant to be easy, personal, smart, fast and fun,” Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said. “And I think we’re just scratching the surface.” The company says that because its new guides rely on Internet technology, they can be changed as easily as updating a website. Comcast has updated its guide 1,200 times since the X1 set-top box was introduced in May 2012. Its new guide will work on tablet computers and smartphones as well. Comcast, with 21.9 million TV subscribers, also expects to save money in the long run with its

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The top prosecutors in San Francisco and New York, seeking ways to curb thefts of mobile devices, said Monday they will reserve judgment of Apple’s new security feature designed to make it harder to reactivate a stolen iPhone. San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon and New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman have been asking the leading wireless device makers to create a “kill switch” that would render stolen phones useless. The prosecutors said they aren’t judging Apple’s new activation lock feature until they can fully determine its effectiveness. Apple mentioned the new feature Monday during the Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. It’s part of iOS7, a new version of Apple’s smartphone software that’s set to be released in the fall. “We are appreciative of the gesture made by Apple to address smartphone theft. We reserve judgment on the activation lock feature until we can understand its actual functionality,” the prosecutors said in a joint written statement. Apple’s announcement comes as Gascon and Schneiderman are scheduled to co-host a “Smartphone Summit” Thursday in New York City with representatives from Apple Inc., Samsung Electronics Co., Google Inc. and Microsoft Corp. Almost 1 in 3 robberies nationwide involves the theft of a mobile phone, according to the Federal Communications Commission, which is coordinating formation this fall of a national database system to track cellphones reported stolen. Nearly 175 million cellphones – mostly smartphones – have been sold in the U.S. in the past year and account for $69 billion in sales, according to IDC, a Massachusetts-based research firm. Schneiderman said a recent study found that lost and stolen cellphones cost consumers more than $30 billion last year. In New York, police have coined the term “Apple-picking” to describe thefts of the popular iPhone and other mobile products like iPads. While Apple didn’t provide many specifics Monday, the new activation lock feature is designed to prevent thieves from turning off the Find My iPhone application, which allows owners to track their phone on a map, remotely set a passcode

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google is buying online mapping service Waze in a deal that keeps a potentially valuable tool away from its rivals while gaining technology that could improve the accuracy and usefulness of its own popular navigation system. The acquisition announced Tuesday ends several months of speculation as Waze flirted with potential buyers interested in its rapidly growing service. Waze blends elements of a social network into its maps to produce more precise directions and more reliable information about local traffic conditions. Google Inc. is believed to have trumped two of its fiercest foes, Facebook Inc. and Apple Inc., in the bidding for Waze, which is based in Israel but also maintains a Palo Alto, Calif. office near all three of the Silicon Valley giants. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Published reports citing unnamed people familiar with the negotiations have pegged the purchase price at $1.1 billion to $1.3 billion. That would make Waze the fourth most expensive acquisition among the more than 240 deals that Google has completed in its nearly 15-year history. The only bigger purchases are Motorola Mobility Holdings for $12.4 billion last year, DoubleClick for $3.2 billion in 2008 and YouTube for $1.76 billion in 2006. The price underscores the increasing importance of digital maps as people frequently check navigation services on their smartphones and tablet computers to help steer them in the right direction. The growing reliance on mobile maps creates more opportunities to show money-making ads, particularly those from local merchants. Google can also link the navigation systems to other applications to help generate more revenue. Google is the leader in the field, but both Apple and Facebook would like a bigger piece of the market. In a blog post, Google said the Waze deal had already closed. That suggests government regulators had no objections to the takeover, even though Google already dominates the market and is eliminating an up-and-coming service as a potential competitive threat. None of Google’s previous acquisitions have been blocked by regulators, although a few underwent

ATLANTA (AP) — Father’s Day gifts have morphed over the years. It used to be a tie, a golf hat or a jazz CD. But dads are more tech-savvy these days. There are plenty of new gadgets on the market to keep them busy, regardless of their interest or hobbies. The cool new products we’ve selected range in price from $10 to $1,600. There are music players for the shower, tools to help the budding guitarist and even a flask that doesn’t hold alcohol. We know what our fathers like. Here’s a guide to some tech gifts that may help them do what they like even better. Kohler Moxie ($200, Kohler Co.) Your dad is likely going to tilt his head to inspect this gadget, then laugh a bit at it, then love it. The Moxie is a waterproof, wireless speaker snookered into a specially designed showerhead and held in place by magnets. The showerhead mounts onto the common pipes found in most shower plumbing hardware, but similarities to a regular showerhead end there. One button turns it on. The speaker then plays music from your smartphone or tablet via a Bluetooth wireless connection. Sound quality is exceptional, and the build and look of the Moxie is top notch. Buy earplugs if you can’t stand Dad singing along. Asus VivoTab Smart ($500, AsusTek Computer Inc.): If you want to spring for a new tablet computer for Dad, but think the iPad is too commonplace, you would do well to consider the VivoTab Smart from Asus. It offers a vivid, 10.1-inch display, plenty of social networking apps and the bonus of running the Windows 8 operating system for more demanding applications. This is the full version of Microsoft’s system, not the lightweight Windows RT that can run only apps specifically designed for it. I’m not totally in love with Windows 8 and its new interface for regular computing, but Windows 8 is slick for tablet use. The response in swiping from one application to the next is lightning fast and intuitive.

NEW YORK (AP) — AT&T is extending from 20 months to 24 months the time it takes for customers on contract-based plans to earn a fully subsidized upgrade to a new phone. The move announced Sunday follows an identical one by Verizon Wireless in April. AT&T Inc.’s new policy applies to any customer whose contract expires in March 2014 or later. Extending the time between phone upgrades saves the phone companies money, since they subsidize each new phone by hundreds of dollars to make it available to customers for $199 or less. AT&T executives had said they planned to rein in spending on phone upgrades this year. The change reflects the growing popularity of expensive smartphones. Verizon subsidized upgrades after just 13 months until January 2011, just before it introduced the iPhone, one of the most expensive phones on a wholesale basis. Carriers pay Apple over $600 for it. Dallas-based AT&T is the country’s second-largest cellphone carrier. It activated 6 million smartphones in the first three months of this year. AT&T shares rose 55 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $36 in morning trading. The shares hit a five-year high of $39 in April. Breaking with industry practices, No. 4 wireless carrier T-Mobile USA ditched its service contracts and phone-upgrade waiting periods in March. It now sells phones on installment plans, giving customers more flexibility on the timing of their phone upgrades.

NEW YORK (AP) — Apple unveiled an Internet radio service called iTunes Radio on Monday and said the service will personalize listeners’ music based on what they’ve listened to and what they’ve purchased on iTunes. Apple said iTunes Radio will be available this fall in the U.S. It will be free with advertisements included, although subscribers of Apple’s iTunes Match music-storage service will get a commercial-free version of iTunes Radio. That service costs $25 a year. In unveiling the long-expected service Monday at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, Apple enters a crowded field. Google Inc. started an on-demand subscription music service called All Access last month. Other leading services include Spotify, Rhapsody and Pandora. Apple was a pioneer of online music sales and is still a leader there, but streaming services such as Pandora and Spotify have emerged as popular alternatives to buying. Pandora relies on its users being connected to the Internet at all times and plays songs at random within certain genres for free. As with Pandora, iTunes Radio will let people create stations based on specific songs, artists or genres. So users can put in a particular song, and the station will play songs like it. Apple did not provide details on how the other songs will be determined. Pandora uses a formula to analyze songs based on musical and other characteristics. Users won’t be able to type in the name of a specific song and have it play right away. Pandora doesn’t allow that either. That’s something available through other services that charge monthly fees, including Spotify and Google’s All Access. Analysts were lukewarm. “This is a nice free feature that lots of people will probably try out, but existing Pandora users won’t have much reason to switch,” said Jan Dawson, chief telecoms analyst at Ovum, in an emailed comment. Dawson said a service that lets people call up specific songs on demand would have made a bigger splash, “but that would likely have disrupted Apple’s existing iTunes business, and the music industry as

LOS ANGELES (AP) — What is the next generation of gaming? It’s a question the video game industry hasn’t quite figured out yet, but it’s one it must confront at this week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, the much-hyped Los Angeles trade show where about 46,000 attendees are expected to play, poke and prod new video games and gizmos from more than 200 exhibitors. Possible answers have included better graphics, cloud computing, increased social networking capabilities, smarter artificial intelligence, more computing power and new entertainment options. While the actual answer is likely a combination of all the above, it doesn’t seem like next-gen console creators have been able to effectively communicate that idea. The move from standard- to high-definition graphics, as well as the introduction of a simple-to-use doodad called the Wiimote, made the last transition between console generations easy to see – and feel. But it’s been a tougher proposition this time for companies attempting to sell difficult-to-describe consoles to consumers more interested in mobile devices. Nintendo already kicked off the next generation with a thud last November with the launch of the Wii U, the successor to the popular Wii system featuring an innovative tablet-like controller yet graphics on par with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3. Nintendo said it sold just 3.45 million units by the end of March, well below the company’s expectations. Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp. both plan to go into deeper detail at E3 about their forthcoming systems that were teased earlier this year. Sony called the PlayStation 4 a “supercharged PC,” while Microsoft described its Xbox One as an “all-in-one” entertainment solution for living rooms. The announcements of both consoles were met with mixed reactions. “There’s a lot of anxiety about the console transition,” said Stephen Totilo, editor of the gaming blog Kotaku.com. “These transitions can flip a company’s fortunes. Sony was up for two generations, and then they came in third place this last time. It’s also difficult for the third-party publishers, who have to figure out where to allocate their resources.”

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — With every phone call they make and every Web excursion they take, people are leaving a digital trail of revealing data that can be tracked by profit-seeking companies and terrorist-hunting government officials. The revelations that the National Security Agency is perusing millions of U.S. customer phone records at Verizon Communications and snooping on the digital communications stored by nine major Internet services illustrate how aggressively personal data is being collected and analyzed. Verizon is handing over so-called metadata, excerpts from millions of U.S. customer records, to the NSA under an order issued by the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, according to a report in the British newspaper The Guardian. The report was confirmed Thursday by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee. Former NSA employee William Binney told the Associated Press that he estimates the agency collects records on 3 billion phone calls each day. The NSA and FBI appear to be casting an even wider net under a clandestine program code-named “PRISM” that came to light in a story posted late Thursday by The Washington Post. PRISM gives the U.S. government access to email, documents, audio, video, photographs and other data that people entrust to some of the world’s best known companies, according to The Washington Post. The newspaper said it reviewed a confidential roster of companies and services participating in PRISM. The companies included AOL Inc., Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., Google Inc., Microsoft Corp., Yahoo Inc., Skype, YouTube and Paltalk. In statements, Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Yahoo said they only provide the government with user data required under the law. (Google runs YouTube and Microsoft owns Skype.) AOL and Paltalk didn’t immediately respond to inquiries from The Associated Press. The NSA isn’t getting customer names or the content of phone conversations under the Verizon court order, but that doesn’t mean the information can’t be tied to other data coming in through the PRISM program to look into people’s lives, according to experts.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Gamblers who prefer their laptops to blackjack tables could be getting a boost from Washington. Republican New York Congressman Peter King introduced legislation Thursday that would rescue online gambling from a legal gray zone and fully regulate it. The federal government cracked down on online poker in 2011. But the same year, the Justice Department issued a ruling making online gambling legal so long as it’s permitted on the state level. As a result, states have taken steps to usher in a new era of online gambling. It already is legal in Nevada, New Jersey and Delaware. King says his bill would allow states and players to navigate the world of online betting with confidence. The measure is called the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection and Enforcement Act of 2013.
