Back in March, I wrote about MoviePass, a service which lets you pay a flat fee and go to dozens of movies a month, at almost any theater in America. Its creators aren’t partnering with theaters; instead, they’ve come up with a clever system involving a location-aware smartphone app and a Discover debit card configured so that you can only use it to pay for movies, and only after you’ve checked in using the app. The company ends up paying full price for tickets, but hopes to turn a profit by selling related items such as DVDs, providing data to marketers and maybe, eventually, striking deals with theaters. Brent Lang of The Wrap has a good story on the service and how the movie-theater business is reacting; it was unhappy about an earlier incarnation but isn’t actively fighting this new version, at least for now: A previous test of the service in San Francisco came undone when theaters refused to accept vouchers that MoviePass gave its customers. The concern at the time was that MoviePass would try to influence ticket prices. AMC Theaters publicly decried the service, while Landmark Theatres CEO Ted Mundorff told TheWrap, “We are not interested in outside entities setting ticket prices for us.” The debit card under the new plan works independent of exhibitors. Users will pay $25 to $40 a month, based on geography, for which they can see one 2D movie a day at 93 percent of theaters nationwide. All they need to do to set up the card is download an iPhone or Android app. Using a card provided by MoviePass, I’ve gone to a couple of movies in the San Francisco area in the past few weeks: the whole process worked without any hiccups and was no more complicated than buying tickets from a service such as Fandango. You have to be an avid filmgoer for this to make sense — if you go three or more times a month, you should save money — but if the startup manages to make

Well, that didn’t take long. You may recall Facebook Home, the heavily modified Android experience launched by the world’s most popular social network a little over a month ago. While Facebook Home is available for download on several existing Android handsets, Facebook also partnered with HTC to launch a midrange smartphone preloaded with Home – the HTC First. The phone went on sale for $99 with a two-year contract through AT&T and became available on April 12. Now, less than a month later, AT&T has dropped the price of HTC First to $0.99 with a two-year contract. Surely, this means the end of Facebook Home as we know it, right? What a flop, huh? It’ll probably ruin all of Facebook in general, too, and we’ll all go back to using Friendster. Or not. “We do promotions like this all the time,” AT&T’s Mark Siegel told AllThingsD’s Ina Fried. Of course, the reviews for Facebook Home in the Google Play store haven’t exactly been mind-blowing, but these are still early days for software that Mark Zuckerberg himself promised would be updated monthly. If I were a betting man – and I’m not – I’d bet that people have probably gone into the AT&T store, seen the HTC First, and decided to pony up an extra $100 for a higher-end Android handset knowing they could just load Facebook Home onto it anyway. At $0.99, the HTC First becomes a much, much, much more compelling phone, though, so it’ll be interesting to see if people start walking around with these things.

The battle for cheap tablet supremacy usually flares up only once a year. As the Christmas shopping season rolls around, we often see new tablets from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and low-cost slates from other companies trying to keep up. But if you’re getting interested in picking up a budget tablet just now, the middle of the year is looking pretty good. Right now, Amazon and Barnes & Noble are both offering discounts on their respective Kindle Fire and Nook tablets, in honor of Mother’s Day: 7-inch Nook HD: $149 for 8 GB, $179 for 16 GB ($50 discount) 8.9-inch Nook HD+: $179 for 16 GB, $209 for 32 GB ($90 discount) 7-inch Kindle Fire HD: $179 for 16 GB with FIRE4MOM coupon code ($20 discount) Granted, these price drops are temporary, but in the past both companies have foreshadowed permanent price cuts with these kinds of promotions. Amazon, for instance, slashed prices on the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD last March, just a month after offering discounts for Valentine’s Day. Although the company has yet make a permanent price cut to its 7-inch tablet, I’ll be surprised if its not coming soon, given the lower price of Barnes & Noble’s Nook (with its newfound Google Play support). Other hardware makers are figuring out how to play the cheap tablet game as well. Acer just announced the the Iconia A1 for $169. It’s an Android tablet with the same screen resolution and aspect ratio as Apple’s iPad Mini, but for half the price. HP just launched its own cheap Android tablet, the Slate 7, also for $169. Analyst Ross Rubin put it succinctly on Twitter last week: Android tablets; $169 is the new $199.— Ross Rubin (@rossrubin) May 03, 2013 That’s not all. Next week, Google is holding a developer conference in San Francisco, where the company will likely announce a follow-up to its Nexus 7 tablet. Will Google stick with a $200 price tag? Maybe, but odds are that the company will drop the price on the current model,

Starting May 1 (and for a limited time), if you bring a smartphone that’s less than three years old and still in “good, working condition” into an AT&T store, you can get $100 or more to use toward the purchase of a new phone. You’ll have to sign up for a two-year contract with AT&T to get the deal. Since many smartphones cost $200 with a two-year contract, AT&T positions this as a “50% off” deal, though the company mentions that a smartphone priced at $99.99 with a two-year contract would be free under this scenario. AT&T also says, “Some trade-in phones may have a value higher than $100. In this case, customers will receive the credit at the higher value.” I confirmed with an AT&T rep that this deal is good for current AT&T subscribers at the end of their two-year contracts as well. So if you’re with AT&T already and you’re due for a new phone, you can trade in your current smartphone for $100 or more in credit and then start another two-year foray into the wild world of wireless.
Last month, I wrote about GetGoing, a new travel site with a unique proposition: It sells deeply discounted plane tickets to people who are willing to select two destinations they’d like to visit. After a shopper has committed to make a purchase, the site chooses one of the two options at random, thereby helping cheapskate consumers save money and airlines fill seats. Lots of people, of course, aren’t quite bargain-hungry enough to agree to buy a plane ticket before they know where they’re going. And now GetGoing has added something for them — a general-purpose flight finder it calls … well, Flight Finder. In general look, feel and functionality, it’s not a radical departure from big-time sites such as Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity. But as with GetGoing’s original Pick Two, Get One feature, FlightFinder is designed to appeal to folks who are open-minded about where they might go. As you’d expect, you can search for a particular destination on particular dates. But the feature also lets you search for groups of destinations, such as Florida Beaches, Skiing Exotic Destinations and Family Friendly Travel. The results then include multiple destinations in one grid, letting you compare options before you make a decision. In a similar manner, if you search for a particular destination, GetGoing may suggest that you also take a look at nearby ones which might have lower fares. A search for Paris, for instance, might prompt it to recommend that you take a look at Brussels and Luxembourg. Unlike Pick Two, Get One, the FlightFinder feature offers flights from all airlines, not just GetGoing’s partners. The company says that prices are the same as you’d find elsewhere; it’s not about beating other fares so much as discovering ones you might never have considered otherwise. For now, the site deals only in flights, but hotels are in the works and the whole experience is modern and nicely designed. I’m going to add it to the list of sites I’ll visit when I’m flight-shopping, along with my current favorites, Hipmunk and

To go along with its new contract-free wireless plans, T-Mobile is offering trade-in credit for iPhone owners. If you bring in an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S by June 16, T-Mobile will waive the $100 down payment on a new iPhone 5, and will also provide a $120 credit toward monthly payments, accessories or other phones. (Normally, the iPhone 5 on T-Mobile costs $100 down and $20 per month for two years, plus the cost of wireless service.) That brings the total savings to $220 with the trade-in credit, which is comparable to what you’d get by trading an iPhone 4S to a buyback service like Gazelle or Nextworth. There’s no reason not to trade directly to T-Mobile if that’s where you plan to subscribe anyway. Just keep in mind that you’d still be on the hook for any outstanding contract with your existing carrier, which would mean paying an early termination fee if you decide to leave. The iPhone 5 launches on T-Mobile this Friday, April 12. To figure out if T-Mobile’s new plans are a good deal for you, check out our guide to doing the math.

Bargain-hunting site Dealnews has run some numbers to determine the best times to get the biggest deals on various Apple products. The site identifies the number of days it takes to see the first deal roll in, along with how long to wait until you can expect to see the best deal – the results can be seen in infographic form over at ReadWrite, if you’re more of a visual learner. Here’s the skinny: 15.4-inch Retina MacBook Pro: Wait two days to save $118; nine months to save $350 11.6-inch MacBook Air: Wait two months to save $49; seven months to save $199 iPad: Wait one month to save $59 – that’s the first and best time, apparently iPad Mini: Wait three months to save $9; five months to save $29 iPhone: Wait two days to save $9; three months to save $73 iPod Touch: Wait one month to save $4; three months to save $50 It should be noted that these deals won’t necessarily come directly from Apple. Dealnews told ReadWrite that some of the best deals to be had come from third-party sellers, and could be on a previous-generation model shortly after a newer model becomes available.
Google Gets into the Same-Day Delivery Race. Why?

We lucky consumers in the Bay Area are serving as Guinea Pigs for a bunch of new services which are trying to make the concept of same-day delivery make sense. There’s one from a startup called Postables. There’s eBay Now, which I found intriguing but glitchy when I tried it last year. And now there’s something called Google Shopping Express: Today we’re starting a new experiment, Google Shopping Express. It’s a local delivery service that we hope will make it possible for you to get the items you order online the same day, and at a low cost. It’s incredibly early days and so the service is only available to a small number of people in the Bay Area. As a tester, you will be able to shop online, in a single place, from retailers such as Target, Walgreens, Staples, American Eagle and Toys“R”Us/Babies“R”Us — along with locally distinct shops such as San Francisco’s Blue Bottle Coffee, and the Bay Area’s Palo Alto Toy & Sport and Raley’s Nob Hill Foods, and get your items delivered that same day. So hopefully, no more trips across town for simple errands. Google doesn’t have much to say about the service in the blog post I just quoted, including how much it plans to charge. (Delivery is free during this test phase.) Two thoughts: At some point, it won’t be fair to harass Google every time it releases something new. But with the announcement of Google Reader’s impending execution for being insufficently essential to the company’s mission still fresh in our minds, it’s impossible to not ask: why does Google need to be in the same-day delivery business? This month marks the fifteenth anniversary of the launch of the famously ill-fated Kozmo.com. Ever since, off and on, other companies have been trying to figure out how to do what Komzo couldn’t: make really fast delivery at a really low price into a rational, sustainable, profitable business. I wonder if it’s even possible?

Every year smartphone cameras get better and better, which makes buying a standalone camera seem like less and less of a necessity, even for people who love taking pictures. Yet even the best camera phones (the HTC Droid DNA, for instance) are still limited in important ways. If you want to take pictures that you can print at large sizes without looking grainy or you want to work in low or harsh lighting situations, you need at least a quality point-and-shoot. On the other end, there are those who are out for great pictures who might want to go further with their photography skills but don’t have the money for a digital SLR. You don’t have to spend your entire savings on a camera to get high quality or the ability to change lenses. In this buying guide we’ll help you understand which options and features are most important for what you want to accomplish and offer suggestions ranging from budget all the way up to high-end models for enthusiasts. Our Picks: Point-and-Shoot & Compact Cameras Prices valid as of 3/24/2013 Budget Cameras: Under $100 Budget point-and-shoots are a step up from smartphone cameras for not a lot of money. However, at this price point don’t expect to find a slew of features or many models that offer manual control. Key features to look for are optical zoom and stabilization, fast shutter speeds, HD video recording and compact bodies. Olympus Editor’s Choice: Olympus VR-340 A stand out among budget cameras, the MP VR-340 boasts a metal body and a higher optical zoom than most in this price range. It takes reasonably sharp and color-rich images and 720p HD video both up close (with Macro mode) and far away, thanks to the 10x zoom and image stabilization. Intelligent Auto mode offers the best settings for those who don’t know their ISO from aperture and Program mode gives those who know what they’re doing deeper control. Once the battery runs down, you can charge it from your computer. The VR-340 is not the fastest

Every time an airplane takes off with even one unfilled seat, an airline is making less money than it could. Selling that seat to someone at some price — even not very much — would be better than leaving it empty. But an airline can’t just start slashing fares willy-nilly; it doesn’t want to give everyone an aggressively good deal. A new travel site called GetGoing thinks it’s found a way to make both airlines and cheapskate consumers happy. The startup competes against well-established companies such as Priceline and Hotwire, which offer deep discounts to travelers who are willing to commit to paying for a flight or a room before they know which airline or hotel they’re buying from. But GetGoing doesn’t just mask the airline; it also requires that you choose two different destinations, and commit to buying tickets before you know which one you’ll get. (You can choose any two you like as long as they’re at least fifty miles apart.) The company then selects one destination and sells you your tickets — which it says are marked down by up to 40 percent, beating even other sources of cut-rate fares. Why the forced choice? Air carriers are willing to give deep discounts to vacationers, who might not fly at all if the price isn’t right. But they’d rather not offer the same deals to business travelers, who are usually spending their companies’ money and are therefore less price-sensitive. By requiring customers to be willing to choose two potential destinations, GetGoing weeds out the corporate crowd. Of course, it also weeds out plenty of vacationers, including anyone who’s unwilling to commit to pay for a trip without knowing the destination. But GetGoing CEO Alek Vernitsky told me that there’s a class of cost-conscious consumer who will find the proposition appealing, especially when multiple people are traveling at once. And for some of them, the surprise factor is fun — or even helpful, such as when a couple can’t agree on where to go. I wondered if GetGoing uses some

When I first heard of MoviePass — a subscription service which lets you watch a movie a day for one flat price — I assumed the movies in question were streamed over the Internet, and that the company was an upstart Netflix competitor. Nope. They’re the movies currently in theaters. And MoviePass lets you go to the film of your choice at the theater of your choice, with no blackout dates and few other restrictions. At South by Southwest Interactive in Austin, I learned about MoviePass from the company’s co-founder and CEO, Stacy Spikes. He’s been experimenting with the MoviePass concept for a while: the company tested a version in San Francisco in 2011 which was expensive ($50 a month), complicated (you ordered the ticket through a third-party service and then redeemed a code to pay for it) and controversial (the AMC chain refused to participate). Harry McCracken / TIME.com MoviePass CEO Stacy Spikes at SXSW The current version, which debuted in October of last year, still isn’t fully open to the public. (Spikes told me there’s a waiting list of 25,000 to 30,000 people.) But it addresses the earlier incarnation’s hitches. For one thing, it’s cheaper — $29.99 a month in most areas. That doesn’t include 3D and IMAX movies or drive-ins, and the price is $34.99 in the nation’s priciest moviegoing cities, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. New members agree to subscribe for one year, with an early termination fee if they cancel after that time; thereafter, subscriptions are on a month-to-month basis. The company is also selling the service in the form of gift cards which offer one month, three months or a year’s worth of movies. The new MoviePass also uses a clever technological approach which sounds simple and doesn’t require the participation of theater chains: you use an iPhone or Android app to check in at a theater and choose a movie, which unlocks your special MoviePass debit card to pay for the ticket. (The payment is only authorized for 30 minutes, and only for

Announced in October, Apple’s 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro carried a starting price of $1,700. Apple has now cut that to $1,500. The high-end model now costs $1,700 and includes a faster processor. The 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro models, announced in June, have gotten processor upgrades as well, but no price cuts. The price of the high-end 13-inch MacBook Air has been lowered to $1,400, too. Per Apple: The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display now starts at $1,499 for 128GB of flash, and $1,699 for a new 2.6 GHz processor and 256GB of flash. The 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display now features a faster 2.4 GHz quad-core processor, and the top-of-the-line 15-inch notebook comes with a new 2.7 GHz quad-core processor and 16GB of memory. Apple today also announced that the 13-inch MacBook Air with 256GB of flash has a new lower price of $1,399.
It’s a double deal Monday, with Amazon lopping $50 off each of its large-format Kindle HD tablets and Best Buy trimming iPhone prices by $50 as well. Starting with the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD, you can get the Wi-Fi version starting at $249 for the 16GB model “with special offers,” which are basically ads that show on the tablet’s lock screen when it’s not being used. An extra $15 will get rid of those ads; the 32GB version with ads is going for $319, or $334 without ads. The Kindle Fire HD with built-in 4G LTE wireless gets the same $50 off deal. Prices start at $449, and you can get 250 megabytes per month of AT&T 4G LTE wireless service for a once-a-year fee of $50. For any of these Kindle Fire HD deals, you’ll need to enter promo code FIREHD89 at checkout to get the savings. The deal is good today only. Moving right along to Best Buy, you can get $50 off an iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S with a two-year contract. Prices start at $150 for the iPhone 5 (normally $200) and $50 for the iPhone 4S (normally $100). The phones are available through AT&T, Sprint or Verizon and, again, you’ll need to agree to a two-year contract for this deal. You have a little more time to cash in on this deal: It’s good until January 5.

Back in the Web 1.0 era, a hot startup named Kozmo.com aimed to revolutionize e-commerce by delivering an array of products in less than an hour. It turned out that Kozmo would be most famous for failing: After raising $250 million and launching in eleven cities, it folded in 2001. Several competitors, such as Urbanfetch, also failed to figure out how to make ultra-fast delivery work. But on the web, no idea ever vanishes permanently. Now same-day delivery is back: Startups such as Postmates are giving it a try, and so are big companies such as Amazon and Walmart. And then there’s eBay Now. The e-commerce behemoth began testing same-day shopping in San Francisco in August. It officially launched the service there in October, and brought it to New York City in November. It’s still officially in beta-test form in both cities. That’s an appropriate label for it to carry. Just as in the Kozmo era, same-day delivery is a cool idea. But eBay Now has its share of rough spots. And even with eBay’s formidable resources, it’s not a given that the service is going to be around for the long haul. Kozmo and its rivals died so quickly at least in part because their business model was unsustainable: They opened their own warehouses and stocked them with stuff like DVDs and ice cream. But they charged about the same price you’d pay anywhere else, and didn’t tack on a huge delivery fee. That left little money to pay for the warehouses, let alone to eke out a profit. Without building any warehouses, eBay has access to a far broader range of products than Kozmo ever carried, stored in convenient repositories all over the locales it currently serves. When a customer orders a product, the company simply sends a courier — it calls them “valets,” to emphasize their helpfulness — to a nearby store, including big names such as Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Home Depot, JCPenney, Macy’s, RadioShack and Target. The valet finds the item (or items), waits

Are you aware that Google’s shopping search engine, unlike the company’s other search offerings, doesn’t give you a list of results based purely on relevance — not how much third parties are willing to pay to get into the rankings? You would be if you’d perused Scroogled, a new site which discusses the topic in great detail and says, “We say that when you limit choices and rank them by payment, consumers get Scroogled. For an honest search result, try Bing.” Scroogled would make that suggestion: It was created by Microsoft, and is part of the company’s off-and-on efforts to attract consumers to Bing by sniping at Google on ethical grounds. (Another recent example: Microsoft ran ads publicizing a $22.5 million penalty Google paid to the FTC after being found to have tracked Safari users without permission.) I’m glad that Microsoft takes its search war with Google seriously. With Yahoo having outsourced its search index to Bing, Microsoft is the last major company left that competes with Google from the core search technology on up. Everybody benefits from the investment Microsoft makes in Bing — including Google users, who surely get a better search engine than they’d have if Google had no meaningful rival. But this Scroogled campaign leaves me cold. With its giant photos of concerned consumers and “Warn your friends now” feature, it has an agitated, angry, unpleasant feel about it. I can’t quite tell whether Microsoft intends the alarmist tone to be taken seriously or not — it sits in the uncanny valley between a public service message and a parody of a public service message. Besides, the sort of educated consumers whom the campaign is presumably aimed at are smart enough to understand that there’s nothing objective about it. It’s one search engine trying to make you feel hostile towards another search engine. It’s negative campaigning from a company with a gigantic vested interest. And I’m not sure whether I buy the argument that what Google is doing is all that sneaky. For one thing, Google Shopping

Watch Out, Here Come the Wii U Vultures (Is Anyone Not Sold Out of the Wii U?)

It looks like the Wii U may be sold out, my friends, which means it’s time to put on black and go into mourning. Gnash your teeth. Wail. Shrug if you couldn’t care less. Or, of course, reach deep into your pockets and pull out wads of cash to pay that sordid segment of the secondary market more than happy to guarantee you a system on launch day for roughly 1000% markup. I just checked GameStop — both the $300 Basic and $350 Deluxe models are sold out, and as I understand it, have been since late September, just after preorders began. Target lists both models on its website but not a button to preorder them. Kmart’s listing is basically the same as Target’s. And Toys ‘R’ Us says the Wii U will be available at launch, but to “check back soon to pre-order.” Walmart‘s online listing for the 32 GB model (I couldn’t find the 8 GB version) won’t let you order online, showing “In stores only” and allowing you to check store availability. I ran a quick search around Michigan, near Ann Arbor (where I live) including Detroit, and not a single store lists the system as “carried.” It’s the same story in Los Angeles, New York and Miami. At this point, I’m assuming your only chance of buying a Wii U from Walmart is going to involve waiting in line on launch day, Nov. 18. Best Buy lists the Wii U as “sold out online.” Fry’s isn’t carrying the Wii U (yet, anyway — it just lists a handful of games). Neither Micro Center nor H.H. Gregg are carrying anything for the Wii U at this point, so they may or may not be launch day options. Sears is carrying the Wii U, but doesn’t appear to be pre-selling it (the company’s website says it’ll be available in stores at launch). It’s the same story at Amazon — the system’s sold out, except here you’ll start to see the third-party price-gougers doing their thing. Right now, you can buy a “new” Wii U
