“The world has changed…” Galadriel might have been talking about Middle-earth, or just the U.S. music industry. I was born in 1972, so I still remember turntables and 8-track players un-ironically. Now my entire (lossless) music collection lives on a two-terabyte hard drive and follows me anywhere I go. Lo-fi or hi-fi, my listening experience includes laptops and pocked-sized DACs capable of 24-bit/96kHz conversion, wired to studio monitors or piped to devices like my Apple TV, palm-sized Bluetooth speakers or other nearby computers. With a few taps on my smartphone, I can summon just about any song and listen through headphones or beam the stream to a wireless receiver like my car’s audio system. Records, tapes, CDs — they’ve become the abstraction. If you want to visualize part of that journey starting in 1973, Digital Music News rolled up its sleeves, reached into the Recording Industry Association of America’s shipments and revenue database and pulled out a trove of stats rendered as pie charts, then chained those charts together, year by year, to form one great, slowly cycling, occasionally Pac-Man-like music industry time machine. Digital Music News According to DMN, the data is strictly U.S., and each pie represents 100% of total recording revenue. If you’d rather see the images one at a time, DMN has that covered, too. 40 Years of Music Industry Change, In 40 Seconds or Less… [Digital Music News]

As a rule, I avoid covering marketing stunts, but as an exception to that rule, I’ll do so when the stunt turns out to be genuinely helpful. You wouldn’t expect that from most companies, least of all a satellite TV provider, but DirecTV reseller Direct.TV’s “Game of Thrones: The King’s Roadmap“ – an interactive, grand geographical timeline and tour of Westeros that’ll get you up to speed — fits the bill. Game of Thrones season three snuck up on me. I didn’t realize the first episode had aired until the episode recap blogs were clogging news aggregators. I haven’t finished Game of Thrones season two yet, mostly because I had a kid last summer, which means I’m down to a couple hours of TV a week counting weekends. Game of Thrones, for all the stuff I like about David Benioff and D. B. Weiss’s surprisingly authentic translation of George R.R. Martin’s books (which I own in first editions), is on my back-burner. That said, this map makes me want to reshuffle things. The map’s a work in progress, of course, since the show’s only up to the third book (of seven, or so we’re told). Actually the first half of the third book, either because A Storm of Swords is too darned long (at a whopping 1,216 pages it’s still got 200 on A Clash of Kings) or HBO’s hoping to give Martin more time to finish the series (he still has two books to go, and he took six years to finish the last one). In any case, Direct.TV says it’ll update the roadmap once a week as new episodes air — season three finishes its run of 10 episodes in early June 2013. My only quibble: When you click the “Game of Thrones” banner at top, instead of taking you to the top of the page with its handy “skip to season X” links, it throws you at the Direct.TV main page; if you want to return to the top, you’ll have to scroll all the way back manually. (Or, you know, you could

Over at Quartz, Kevin Ashton has a thorough piece explaining how the Harlem Shake wasn’t so much a meme in the traditional sense, but the work of corporations pushing something identified as “pre-viral” into full-fledged madness: Experts said the “Harlem Shake” phenomenon was emergent behavior from the hive mind of the internet—accidental, ad hoc, uncoordinated: a “meme” that “went viral.” But this is untrue. The real story of the “Harlem Shake” shows how much popular culture has changed and how much it has stayed the same… The myth of the “Harlem Shake” is that its viral spread was spontaneous, not directed by financial interests—a pop culture, popular uprising. Here’s how the meme and the myth began.
Tetriminos: that’s what the little Tetris pieces are called. And now we FINALLY have a way to calculate how many Tetriminos it would take to build your house. Over on Movoto.com, a blog fashioning itself as “the lighter side of real estate,” sits a specimen of human ingenuity called Tetris Your House. It’s a simple calculator wherein you enter the square footage of your house, followed by its number of floors. A brief period of what I can only assume are highly advanced calculations takes place and then – boom – you get your answer. As a character from a movie about Tetris that steals a line from a movie about Facebook should almost certainly say, “A house made of a million Tetriminos isn’t cool. You know what’s cool? A billion Tetriminos.” Also, a billion Tetriminos would be enough to build a two-floor, 1730 square-foot house. Maybe it’s not the biggest house in the world, but it’s yours. And, it’s made of Tetriminos, which can only improve the resale value by a factor of one skillion. Some mind-bending thought went into figuring out how to convert the Tetriminos of the Game Boy version of Tetris into actual mass, but the short answer is that each cube of each Tetrimino would measure 0.097 inches square (the skinny “I” piece is made of four cubes, for reference). Use the Tetris Your House calculator below or hop over to Movoto to see how many Tetriminos it’d take to make your house.
Back when planking was sweeping the Internet, encouraging people everywhere to photograph themselves lying flat in odd places, students at the University of Chicago were cooking up a meme of their own. Crouching down bowlegged, raising their arms like claws and sticking out their tongues, they were phoenixing — posing like the phoenix in the university’s official seal. “We did it all over campus, and then prospective students sent in pictures of themselves doing it,” says junior Lauren Kelly-Jones. “People saw me on campus and were like, ‘Oh, you’re that girl who was doing the phoenixing thing.’” Kelly-Jones was an inaugural phoenixer. Photos of her striking the pose appeared on the UChicago College Admissions Tumblr, which she helped launch and contributes to as an intern in the admissions office. The department is no stranger to social media — it uses Instagram, Pinterest and Google+ Hangouts to connect with students — but Tumblr is becoming one of its most popular tools for engaging applicants and documenting student life, phoenixing and all. (MORE: Tumblr – 50 Best Websites 2010) “We aren’t shy when it comes to sharing things,” says Grace Chapin, senior admissions counselor, who started her office’s Tumblr with Kelly-Jones in the summer of 2011. “It takes the edge off the college process when you know, ‘This is an academic place, but there will be people at this place that enjoy a good cat picture as much as I do.’” Since its founding in 2007, Tumblr has became one of the top ten most visited sites in the world, and while it hasn’t reached the omnipresence of Facebook, the microblogging platform has found a loyal audience among younger folks: A fall 2012 survey from the Pew Internet & American Life Project reported that while only five percent of adults online use Tumblr (compared to Facebook’s 66 percent), that figure more than doubles for young adults online. Emmanuel Quartey, who runs Yale University’s Tumblr and blogs about social media and higher education, says there has been “an explosion” of university Tumblrs over

We just had our first rehearsal with our new band. I played drums from Boston, Matt played keyboard from Ann Arbor and Jared played guitar from Cincinnati. We never decided on a band name, but I think The Kiss n’ Kill Keyboard Kidz is probably perfect. We used Jam with Chrome, a Google-developed diversion meant to help you procrastinate for a good chunk of the morning or demonstrate how far web technology has come. Google says Jam with Chrome “makes use of several web technologies and Google products,” but that part is housed behind a little “Technology” link at the bottom of the page. You load up the site, pick your instrument and then either set it to Pro mode, which lets you strike various keys, guitar strings or drums with your keyboard, or opt for Easy mode, which lays out a basic, in-time progression for you. On the drums, for instance, Easy mode lets you pick between four basic beats and then use your mouse to hit the drums and cymbals to spice up the beat here and there. I may or may not have sounded like if Neil Peart and Buddy Rich were fused together. There’s enough lag in Pro mode that truly jamming with multiple people each manually playing instruments is a no-go, but the idea’s there and should hopefully evolve over time. Matt said he wished he could hook his actual keyboard up via the MIDI interface to really play (maybe that feature will get added someday). I wish I hadn’t left my drumset in Seattle back in 2001 (it’s gone, man).
So you’ve finally joined the Retina club and bought yourself one of these newfangled 13-inch Retina MacBook Pros. Or maybe you’re already a card-carrying member, toting a third-gen iPad or Apple‘s boutique 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro, released in June. Say you’re bored with Apple’s desktop backgrounds. Where can you find the crème de la crème artwork on the interwebs without springing for an ultra-megapixel camera and playing the shoot-and-crop game? I was in this pickle when I sprang for a 15-inch Retina Pro this summer, a laptop that runs at a then-unheard-of 2880 x 1880 pixel resolution. That’s a lot of pixels jammed into a screen just 15.4 inches, corner to corner — over five million total. Or take the 13-inch Pro’s 2560 x 1600 display, with over four million pixels — higher than your average desktop monitor. Even the third-gen iPad’s 2048 x 1536 resolution (on a 9.7-inch screen) is up there, well above high-def television’s best of 1080p, or 1920 x 1080. Finding decent artwork at these levels is a crapshoot. You can track down imagery using Google Images with the “larger than” or “exactly” size options, but you’re corralled by search phrases, and even then, you’re playing hunt and peck, shuffling through so much dreck. On the following pages, you’ll find recommendations for the best Retina wallpaper sites on the web — not of upscaled pictures or someone’s amateur photo collection, but serious, professional photography and digital artwork.
