The latest Iron Man 2 trailer debuted on Jimmy Kimmel right after the Oscars and here it is. I think this is the first we’ve seen of Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow in action. I won’t spoil the rest but it’s most definitely worth a look.
Apps & Web
Witness the Awesomeness that is Microsoft. No, really!
It makes sense now, right? The above demo by Eric Rudder at TechEd in Dubai is one of many reasons why I’m stoked for Windows Phone 7 devices to be released to the public. The ability to play a game that syncs across all three major Microsoft platforms (Xbox 360, Windows OS, Windows Phone 7) is bonkers.
Not that I use a Windows …
WTF of the Day: Ke$ha x Star Wars
I don’t know who this Ke$ha person is or what her song is all about, but this video is pretty amazing. The guy dressed up as Leia looks way too comfortable in that getup though.
The End of An Era? Memories of Milestone Comics
This week’s issue of Milestone Forever closes the door on another reality. That reality began in 1993 when the characters of the Milestone Media imprint injected a whole new breed of superhero into the comics market. Characters like cocky inventor genius Hardware, omniscient Machiavellian manipulator Dharma and energy-absorbing …
Origins: Chatting With Up Director Pete Docter
Pete Docter is a Pixar guy. He was one of the animation studio’s first employees, and has directed Toy Story and Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., and last year’s almost unanimously acclaimed Up. That last film is only the second animated movie to be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Between that, and its nomination for Best Animated …
Techland Oscar Competition: Can You Beat the Movie Nerd?
Oscar Nerds Unite!
So I was debating about whether or not to post this in Techland. Then I decided, what the heck, it’s Friday, why not!
For the past 11 years, I’ve been organizing an annual Oscars competition with one of my very best friends: David M. Johnson, engineer and theatrical lighting master, now operating out of San …
Through the Looking Glass: The Many Alices of Wonderland
Wonderland? I have the strangest sense that we’ve been here before.
What began as a child’s story created by a young man during his time spent with his boss’ children in the 1850s has become a cherished classic – and time and again, its likeness has proven that it has staying power.
Lewis Carroll (or Charles Dodgson as he was …
Emanata: The Ultimate Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Book
Jason Shiga’s artwork is as precisely functional as a mathematical proof: it communicates what’s happening in his comics clearly, it’s funny, and that’s about all that can be said for it. But he’s an excellent, very funny, enormously original, and wildly peculiar cartoonist–American comics’ equivalent of bands like the Raincoats and …
Oscars For Nerds: The 8 Geekiest Nominees to Root For
This Sunday is Oscars Sunday – the day when most of the world tunes in to see the movie stars walking the red carpet. To see which Twilight heartthrobs will be presenting awards. (Oh please let it be Jacob! He’s so dreamy!)
But there are plenty of nerds who will be in the audience Sunday night – and a few of them will even get a …
The Techland Show: The Nice Edition
This week on the Techland show we once again feature our intern Allie Townsend. Not only do Allie’s posts get more traffic than mine, she also got to see Alice before I did. This time next year Allie will probably have my job. The year after that she’ll have your job.
We get to the bottom of that and much more in this week’s …
China’s Human Flesh Search Engines
I’m not super into straight-up repostings of other people’s repostings of links, but I am sufficiently skeeved by an article in this weekend’s New York Times Magazine that I can’t help it.
It’s a piece about a practice, apparently (the evidence is compelling but anecdotal) increasingly common in China: somebody gets caught doing …
The Avatar Oscar Paradox: A Breakthrough, But Not Worthy of the Trophy
I’ve been thinking about writing this note for a long time now. For more than a month, actually. Ever since I wrote up our Freeze Frame feature, about the deep, intoxicating horizons of Avatar.
Back in early February, in response to my commentary about the film’s 3D achievements, commenter grape_crush posted the following: …
