Do you remember netbook computers? They were all the rage for a couple years due, in part, to their inexpensive prices. But you got what you paid for – a portable, low-powered device designed to do the absolute bare minimum. These days, netbooks have largely been replaced by tablet computers. But Hewlett Packard is taking one more stab at the netbook market with the HP SlateBook x2, a tablet hybrid that doubles as a basic laptop computer. Powered by Android Jelly Bean, the device features a best-in-class 10.1-inch HD touchscreen, front- and rear-facing cameras, a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, 64 GB of storage, and an included. What’s special, though, is the included detachable magnetic keyboard, which has a built-in touchpad for laptop-like computer and a second battery built right in. It’s the evolution of the netbook. Is the SlateBook worth your money? It’s a bit early to say whether it merits inclusion in our list of the best 10-inch tablets, but HP’s new hybrid certainly does have a lot going for it. The tablet-esque device starts at $479.99, and it carries many of the features you should expect at that price point. But it does go above and beyond – after all, the detachable magnetic keyboard with touchpad comes included in the price, and that’s something other manufacturers charge $150 for. And the inclusion of a second battery means you can squeeze up to 8 hours of fun out of the device, which is simply hard to beat. It’s terrific for traveling with kids, especially considering Jelly Bean’s built-in parental controls. The SlateBook x2 starts at $479.99, and will be available for sale starting August 2013. For more information on choosing the right tablet computer, be sure check out Techlicious’s How to Buy a Tabletguide.
The battle for cheap tablet supremacy usually flares up only once a year. As the Christmas shopping season rolls around, we often see new tablets from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and low-cost slates from other companies trying to keep up. But if you’re getting interested in picking up a budget tablet just now, the middle of the year is looking pretty good. Right now, Amazon and Barnes & Noble are both offering discounts on their respective Kindle Fire and Nook tablets, in honor of Mother’s Day: 7-inch Nook HD: $149 for 8 GB, $179 for 16 GB ($50 discount) 8.9-inch Nook HD+: $179 for 16 GB, $209 for 32 GB ($90 discount) 7-inch Kindle Fire HD: $179 for 16 GB with FIRE4MOM coupon code ($20 discount) Granted, these price drops are temporary, but in the past both companies have foreshadowed permanent price cuts with these kinds of promotions. Amazon, for instance, slashed prices on the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD last March, just a month after offering discounts for Valentine’s Day. Although the company has yet make a permanent price cut to its 7-inch tablet, I’ll be surprised if its not coming soon, given the lower price of Barnes & Noble’s Nook (with its newfound Google Play support). Other hardware makers are figuring out how to play the cheap tablet game as well. Acer just announced the the Iconia A1 for $169. It’s an Android tablet with the same screen resolution and aspect ratio as Apple’s iPad Mini, but for half the price. HP just launched its own cheap Android tablet, the Slate 7, also for $169. Analyst Ross Rubin put it succinctly on Twitter last week: Android tablets; $169 is the new $199.— Ross Rubin (@rossrubin) May 03, 2013 That’s not all. Next week, Google is holding a developer conference in San Francisco, where the company will likely announce a follow-up to its Nexus 7 tablet. Will Google stick with a $200 price tag? Maybe, but odds are that the company will drop the price on the current model,

In totally weird and unexpected news, LG plans to buy key parts of WebOS from HP, aiming to use the operating system in televisions. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, but LG will get the WebOS “source code, associated documentation, engineering talent and related websites,” while HP will hang on to the “cloud computing assets, including source code, talent, infrastructure and contracts.” HP will also keep all patents related to WebOS, but will license them to LG, and will also continue to provide support for existing WebOS devices, such as the HP TouchPad. WebOS will remain open source, and LG will contribute to those projects. So begins another chapter in the tormented history of WebOS. Created by Palm, WebOS debuted on the Palm Pre smartphone in 2009 and received lots of love from the tech press, who were craving a credible alternative to Apple’s iPhone. The device never gained much traction though, mainly because of poor marketing, a lack of apps and issues with hardware build quality. HP bought Palm in 2010, with plans to revitalize WebOS for phones, tablets and even printers. The company spoke of bringing the operating system to cars, fridges and stoves as well. But HP never overcame the issues that dogged Palm, including the lack of apps on the platform. And by the time HP got around to launching the Veer smartphone and TouchPad tablet, the hardware already seemed outdated. The company was also having serious management problems at the time, and while former CEO Leo Apotheker had planned to abandon WebOS entirely, current CEO Meg Whitman turned it into an open source project. That brings us to the present, in which LG plans to use a four year-old OS in a format it wasn’t made to inhabit. It’s not exactly clear how this will work. When asked by The Verge how the company would take advantage WebOS, LG CTO Skott Ahn gave a muddled answer about using it “together” with Android, claiming that WebOS has a better user experience. When asked what the core advantage of WebOS was, Ahn

More news from Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress show: HP is announcing the Slate7, a 7″ Android tablet. It’s HP’s first Android tablet, unless you count the Photosmart eStation, an offbeat 2010 printer with a detachable Android tablet. And it marks the first signs of the company’s return to the mobile-gizmo market it hastily abandoned in 2011 when it scrapped its TouchPad tablet and Pre phones, which were based on the WebOS software it acquired when it bought Palm. (Of course, HP never stopped making Windows-based tablets.) It’s seriously late in the game to be getting into the 7″ Android tablet market, which is already thickly populated with models from Google, Amazon, Barnes & Noble and others. And there’s a limit to what HP can do to make its unit stand out. But it sounds like a plausible contender, with Android Jelly Bean 4.1 (with custom printing featues but, HP says, a minimum of modifications to its interface ), cameras on the front and back, Beats audio, 8GB of storage, a MicroSD slot and an aluminum case. The $169 price should help, since most of the tablet’s rivals go for $199; Amazon’s Kindle Fire is just $159, but it doesn’t have any cameras…and does have ads. I spoke with Alberto Torres, the head of the mobility group which HP formed last year, about the Slate7. He told me that this 7-incher will be joined by other new tablets and, eventually, by HP smartphones. He didn’t confirm that the phones would run Android, but it’ll be startling if they don’t. Along with HP’s recently-introduced Chromebook, the Slate7, which arrives in April, is a sign that the company sees its future as being less Microsoft-centric than its past. Even for those of us who think Windows 8 deserves more time to prove itself before it’s written off as a failure, it’s not hard to see why HP wants to keep its options open.

HP has produced a Chromebook, joining the likes of Acer, Samsung and Lenovo as they search for a credible Windows alternative. The sudden uptick in interest from PC makers worries me, and I’ll explain why shortly. First, a bit about HP’s product: Out of all the laptops running Google‘s Chrome OS software, HP’s Chromebook is the largest, with a 14-inch, 1366-by-768 resolution display. Other specs include an Intel Celeron processor, 2 GB of RAM, a 16 GB solid state drive, three USB ports, an SD card reader and HDMI output. The laptop measures 0.83 inches thick, weighs a little under four pounds and gets a measly four hours and 15 minutes on a charge. (MORE: How the Tablet Came to Disrupt the PC Industry) The device is available now for $330. That’s pricier than some other Chromebooks like Samsung’s Series 3 ($250) and Acer’s C7 ($200), but cheaper than the Samsung Series 5 550 ($450), which is far and away the best of the bunch. Lenovo makes a rugged $429 Chromebook, but it’s for schools only. My concern is that as PC makers clamor to offer something besides Windows machines, they’ll do a disservice to what makes Chrome OS so useful. The browser-based operating system can’t install any software; it’s meant to be a fast, simple and safe way to get on the Internet, and that’s pretty much it. Accordingly, Chromebooks are at their best as lightweight, speedy machines with decent battery life. That ideal vision is starting to fray at the edges. Take, for instance, Acer’s $200 Chromebook. It’s desirable primarily because of its low price, but it has a few major drawbacks: At more than an inch thick, it’s on the chunky side for an 11-inch laptop, and its battery only lasts up to four hours on a charge. It also comes with a 320 GB hard drive instead of solid state storage, against Google’s own recommendations for Chrome OS. Solid state is faster and more reliable, so the hard drive seems like little more than a security blanket

I’ve been thinking of the “Ultrabook” category of laptops–devised and named by Intel–as being pretty much synonymous with “MacBook Air lookalikes that run Windows.” But HP’s new Folio is an Ultrabook that isn’t that Air-like. It aspires to be practical and portable, not super-sleek and sexy.

HP announced a 3D PC display and a 3D PC yesterday. To me, at least, the most interesting thing about them is that the company chose a different flavor of 3D for each device. First the display. Its official moniker is the HP 2311gt 3D monitor, and it’s a 23″ LED-backlit display. Like most 3D movies you see in theaters, the 3D is passive, which means that its uses polarized glasses that don’t have any embedded electronics and don’t cost a lot of money. In fact, the display and twoset of glasses go for $299.99, or about what you might pay for two pair of active-shutter glasses alone. Then there’s the HP TouchSmart 620 3D Edition PC. It’s a whole touch-screen PC that also uses a 23″ screen, and it’s the first TouchSmart that does 3D (and comes with a built-in 3D Webcam). Unlike the 2311gt, it uses active glasses, and comes with one set of them. Other than the 3D, it’s a typical TouchSmart, with HP’s touch interface—until Windows 8 arrives, HP is the only company that’s put the effort into making touch work well on Windows—plus a fold-back screen and Beats audio. It costs $1899.99, with a $300 “instant rebate” that brings the price down to $1599.99. (MORE: Hello, 3D PC! HP Unveils TouchSmart 620 All-in-One) HP showed me both new products last week. How’d the 3D compare? Well, I’m not the best person to render a verdict. I wear glasses and have a bizarrely wide head, so most 3D glasses (including HP’s) fit me poorly, hurting both the stereoscopic effect and my skull. Even aside from that, I find 3D gimmicky at best. (That said, I’m more excited about it for game-playing and creating 3D photos than I am for movie-watching, so 3D PCs are at least marginally more alluring to me than 3D TVs.) It seems that HP went with passive 3D on the monitor to keep the price low, and chose active for the PC because it believes it to be the superior technology.
Okay you visually healthy don’t-need-glasses tech buffs, here’s your chance to don a pair of Buddy Holly-thick specs (thicker, in fact) while parked in front of a computer monitor that doubles as your PC. Meet the HP TouchSmart 620 3D Edition, another svelte, tower-free desktop HP’s adding to its already crowded lineup of all-in-one space-savers. It’s yours, in its base configuration, for $1,800. The TouchSmart 620 marries the TouchSmart 610 setup to a 23-inch 3D touchscreen (the 610 also has a 23-inch touchscreen, but absent stereoscopic 3D). Inside the chunky 4.1-inch thick display, you’ll find a 3.1GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of memory, a 1.5TB hard drive, a Blu-ray drive and for the visual coup de grace, an AMD Radeon HD 6650 or 6670 graphics card. Not bad, considering the performance mid-range 6670 debuted in April this year, and it’ll be capable of average frame rates in the low 30s running a visually complex game like Crysis 2 on high detail settings at the display’s native 1920 by 1080 (1080p) pixel resolution. (MORE: HP Changes Its Mind, Won’t Spin Off PC Division) The 620 also retains the 610′s flexible ergonomics: The screen swivels up to 180 degrees and reclines up to 60 degrees—almost flat—affording you considerable leverage when shifting things around, say, to mitigate glare. Conjure 3D mode, and you’re using software from TriDef designed to make accessing the display’s 3D capabilities more user-friendly. Other tidbits: The base model includes a dual lens camera capable of grabbing 3D video as well as still shots, a TV tuner, and comes with a pair of active shutter glasses (necessary for viewing anything in 3D, of course). The TouchSmart 620 isn’t the first all-in-one 3D computer to market. Sony, Lenovo, MSI and Asus each sell all-in-one 3D desktops. As deals go, the 620′s less expensive than Sony’s $2,300 Vaio L-Series 3D Edition (the Vaio has an i7 processor and a 3TB hard drive), but it’s considerably more expensive than Lenovo’s aggressively priced $1,300 IdeaCenter B520 (with an i7 processor and Nvidia GeForce GT 555M GPU). Will anyone buy it? Probably—the 3D
