As Android phones go, the HTC One is very nice. A handsome technology blogger once remarked, “It’s the finest I’ve ever used, and I’ve used a fair number of Android phones in this line of work.” I had early access to the AT&T version of the HTC One and, upon showing it off at a poker game to several Android-toting gentlemen who were trying to take my money, several inquired about whether it would be available through Verizon. That answer is now a confirmed yes, according to Verizon’s Twitter account. Of course, not having an exact date — or even a ballpark date, really — isn’t all that helpful. And keep in mind that “summer” technically stretches all the way into late September. But for those of you who have been waiting patiently for the HTC One to hit Verizon, at least you have something a little more concrete to look forward to. For those of you who don’t want to wait until late summer, the phone is available now through AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. It’s coming – the HTC One will be available on the #Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network later this summer #HTCOne @HTCUSA— Verizon Wireless (@VZWnews) June 03, 2013

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Google is adding the recently released HTC One to its lineup of smartphones running on an unmodified version of its latest Android software. An HTC One model relying on the same version of Android as Google’s Nexus brand will go on sale on June 26 for $599. That’s the same day Google Inc. will start selling a Samsung Galaxy 4S that runs on a pure version of Android for $649. Most consumers have been paying about $200 for the HTC One and Galaxy 4S since their April release. Wireless carriers subsidize the smartphones in return for a two-year contract commitment. Google’s phone sales aren’t tied to any wireless carrier. The devices are aimed at people who don’t like the revisions that HTC and Samsung made to the Android.

The tech world has been buzzing lately about a potential wave of new “Nexus” phones. LG just announced a white Nexus 4 to complement the black model that’s already available. Samsung will release a Nexus-like version of its Galaxy S 4 next month, and HTC is rumored to be considering the same for its HTC One. All of this news would have excited me a few months ago, when I considered myself somewhat of an Android purist. But my recent purchase of an HTC One has made me rethink whether Nexus phones can truly provide a better experience. If you’re unfamiliar, devices that bear the “Nexus” label run Android exactly as Google intended, without frilly modifications from phonemakers. You won’t, for instance, find S-Voice or Smart Scroll — hallmark features of Samsung’s Galaxy S phones — on the company’s Nexus 10 tablet or Galaxy Nexus phone. Techies tend to like the Nexus concept because it represents a purer, dare I say Apple-like, approach to smartphone design. There are no gimmicks, and no “bloatware,” and the software updates come directly from Google without any delays. The HTC One, which runs a modified version of Android dubbed Sense, has convinced me that the benefits of non-Nexus devices outweigh the drawbacks. After spending about three weeks with the HTC One, there are a few features I’d be reluctant to give up: Killer Camera Software: On the HTC One, the camera is the killer app. I love the ability to hold down the shutter button to take photos in burst mode, and then select the best photo of the bunch to save. HDR mode is easy to access, and the ability to snap photos from a video is a nice touch. The camera software on Nexus devices isn’t as advanced, nor is it designed with any particular hardware in mind. Putting stock Android on the HTC One would make the camera worse. Lock-Screen Shortcuts: On HTC’s phones, you can jump directly into any of your docked apps from the lock screen by swiping up on the

Well, that didn’t take long. You may recall Facebook Home, the heavily modified Android experience launched by the world’s most popular social network a little over a month ago. While Facebook Home is available for download on several existing Android handsets, Facebook also partnered with HTC to launch a midrange smartphone preloaded with Home – the HTC First. The phone went on sale for $99 with a two-year contract through AT&T and became available on April 12. Now, less than a month later, AT&T has dropped the price of HTC First to $0.99 with a two-year contract. Surely, this means the end of Facebook Home as we know it, right? What a flop, huh? It’ll probably ruin all of Facebook in general, too, and we’ll all go back to using Friendster. Or not. “We do promotions like this all the time,” AT&T’s Mark Siegel told AllThingsD’s Ina Fried. Of course, the reviews for Facebook Home in the Google Play store haven’t exactly been mind-blowing, but these are still early days for software that Mark Zuckerberg himself promised would be updated monthly. If I were a betting man – and I’m not – I’d bet that people have probably gone into the AT&T store, seen the HTC First, and decided to pony up an extra $100 for a higher-end Android handset knowing they could just load Facebook Home onto it anyway. At $0.99, the HTC First becomes a much, much, much more compelling phone, though, so it’ll be interesting to see if people start walking around with these things.

Let’s get something out of the way right off the bat: the HTC One is a damn fine Android phone. It’s the finest I’ve ever used, and I’ve used a fair number of Android phones in this line of work. Being an Android phone is tough, though, due in large part to the sheer number of Android phones that are on the market and the speed at which they become available. Case in point: HTC’s own Droid DNA is and was a damn fine Android phone that came out less than six months ago; aside from the DNA having a slightly larger screen and being available on Verizon, the HTC One has basically taken the wind out of the Droid DNA’s sails. That’s what HTC’s biggest challenge might be with the One: there’s always another Android phone looming right around the corner that may be able to knock the current champ off its pedestal. In the One’s case, that phone might be the Samsung Galaxy S4, which is due out in a couple of weeks. For now, however, the HTC One is absolutely the Android phone to beat, and arguably the smartphone to beat regardless of platform. Of all the One’s features, five stick out as notable: its design, screen, speed, camera and battery. These are five major things that aren’t superfluous or gimmicky. These are important, useful features, and HTC nailed them. The One is an exercise in thoughtful, beautiful design. It’s wrapped in aluminum, not plastic; it’s big but not too big; substantial but not heavy. A lot of care went into crafting this phone. The 4.7-in. (12 cm) screen packs a full HD (1920 by 1080) resolution and pushes out rich colors. It’s truly gorgeous, whether you’re reading text, looking at photos or watching video. And the 1.7-GHz quad-core processor coupled with 2 gigabytes of RAM ensures every swipe, tap and scroll is as smooth as the next. When it comes to the camera, HTC opted out of the megapixel race, instead referring to the One’s camera as

When Mark Zuckerberg took the stage at Thursday’s Android-centric event at Facebook headquarters and began by saying that the company was finally announcing a Facebook phone, one thing became clear: he was teasing. Facebook wasn’t announcing a Facebook phone. Or at least it wasn’t announcing the Facebook phone which has been the subject of rumors for years now. Instead, the company was announcing countless Facebook phones, by introducing Facebook Home, an app which replaces Android’s standard interface with its own homescreen and lock screen, allowing people to make handsets they already own into Facebook-centric phones. It also showed off HTC’s appropriately-named First, the first of what could be many phones with Facebook Home pre-installed as their standard interface. As usual, I came out of the event with lots of questions. I got to ask a few of them during a post-unveiling chat with Adam Mosseri, Facebook’s director of product for Facebook Home. Herewith, the stuff I’ve been wondering about, with some answers from Mosseri. 1. How long has this been in the works? Scuttlebutt concerning a Facebook phone dates back to at least 2010. But Mosseri told me that Home has only been in the works for a year or so. It represents an aggregation of several discrete ideas the company had been toying with, such as the Cover Feed and the Chatheads messaging service. It was only in July or August of last year that work began on Home in earnest. 2. Do actual people want people-centric phones? Zuck spent a fair chunk of his time today declaring that phones should be organized around people and sharing, not apps. It’s a logical stance to take when you’re the CEO of Facebook. But it also gave me a deep sense of deja vu, since I’ve sat through numerous other press conferences in which tech execs said pretty much the same thing. But none of the previous people-centric interfaces — from Motorola’s Motoblur to Windows Phone — have caught on. For now, at least, most people seem quite happy with app-centric

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wasn’t lying all those times he insisted there is no Facebook phone. Instead, there’s Facebook Home, a piece of software for Android that puts social networking front-and-center. How does Facebook Home work? Let’s walk through the details of what it is, and when you can actually try it yourself: Facebook Home Is a Launcher That Works with Existing Android Phones On Android phones, the launcher determines what your home screen, lock screen and other elements look like. All Android phones have a default launcher, but there are others you can install. For instance, you can get a launcher that gives you extra home screens, or changes the way app icons look. Facebook Home is just another alternative launcher that you can download for free. Once installed, it changes the way your phone’s software looks and behaves. In place of a traditional lock screen, you get full-screen images from Facebook and status updates that you can swipe through, along with regular phone notifications. From there, you can jump right into Facebook Messenger, open your most recent app or view your app list. You can also post Facebook status updates, photos or check-ins directly from the app launcher. It Runs All the Same Android Apps Facebook isn’t doing its own app store for Home; it’s relying on Android’s existing one. You can still have Gmail, Chrome, Maps and other core Google services, and you can download more apps from Google Play, just like you can with any alternative launcher. In other words, Facebook hasn’t done any deep modifications to Android, like Amazon did with its Kindle Fire tablets. That allows Facebook Home to run on existing phones, in addition to new phones with Home pre-installed. Think of it as a layer that runs on top of your existing Android software. Facebook Messaging Is a Huge Focus The other big feature in Facebook Home has the rather silly name “Chatheads.” When you receive a text message, Facebook message or group Facebook chat, a little circular icon pop ups with

HTC has unveiled the HTC One smartphone, an Android device with a 4.7-inch full HD (1920×1080) display. The phone will be available worldwide beginning in late March. Pricing hasn’t been revealed, but here in the U.S. there will be 32-gigabyte and 64-gigabyte versions. Both models will require a two-year contract from AT&T, Sprint, or T-Mobile, and the phone will be available in silver or black. HTC is counting on the phone’s camera, revamped “Sense” interface and dual front speakers to set it apart from other Android handsets. The 1920×1080-resolution screen ought to help, too: I used HTC’s currently-available Droid DNA rather extensively, which sports a 5-inch, 1920×1080 screen that’s downright gorgeous. Stuffing the same resolution into a slightly smaller screen – as is the case with the One — ups the pixels-per-inch count to 468. I only had a few minutes of hands-on time with the HTC One but I can tell you that, in person, the screen looks as great as the Droid DNA’s. Under the hood, there’s a 1.7-GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, two gigabytes of RAM, and a 2300mAh battery – all packaged together using, as HTC refers to it, a “zero-gap aluminum unibody” construction. During a press event in New York, HTC President Jason MacKenzie touted the revamped Sense interface, a modified version of the Android operating system, emphasizing the company’s new BlinkFeed feature. BlinkFeed is a Windows Phone-like representation of visual tiles that pull in content from various providers (the company says it has 1400 partners already) such as ESPN, Facebook, Twitter and other popular services. The company also continues to leverage its partnership with Beats Audio, Dr. Dre’s high-end speaker and headphone company. The HTC One sports two front-firing stereo speakers and Beats Audio amplification in a feature called BoomSound. The phone also uses two dual-membrane microphones for high-quality audio recording and promises improved audio for phone calls. To round out the entertainment features, the HTC One sports an infrared port and leverages a function called SenseTV to turn the smartphone into a web-connected remote control

Let’s kick off this HTC One X+ review by dealing with the elephant in the room. If you’re an Android phone maker today, you need to answer a fundamental question: Why should someone buy this instead of Samsung‘s Galaxy S III? (Yes, I’m riffing on a similar question once posed by my colleague, Harry McCracken.) Because the reality is that Samsung’s savvy marketing–plus the fact that it makes great phones–have allowed the Galaxy S III to become widely available across all wireless carriers, and therefore wildly popular. It’s simply the standard for anyone who’s not buying an iPhone, and other phone makers need to wrestle with that. For the last week or so, I’ve been using an HTC One X+ on AT&T, which sells for $200 on-contract. It’s an update to the earlier One X in a few key areas: It has a faster processor, a bigger battery, more storage and a newer version of Android. You know what? Those are exactly the same advantages the One X+ holds over the Galaxy S III, except for the equally-sized battery. The question is whether those differences, and others, are enough to help the One X+ stand out. (MORE: Compared: HTC’s One X, One S and Evo 4G LTE) It’s a nicely-designed phone, covered in grippy, soft-touch plastic with comfortable, rounded corners. The edges of the One X+ are angled slightly inward, helping to frame the hand while making the 4.7-inch, 1280-by-720 S-LCD display appear to thrust toward the user. It’s a gorgeous screen too; while it doesn’t have the pop of an AMOLED display, you couldn’t see a pixel on it if you tried. Like HTC’s other recent Android phones, the One X+ has three capacitive buttons on the bottom: one for back, one for home, and one for a list of recent apps. You can switch that last one to a menu button, so it’s more like the Galaxy S III. If you don’t, some apps will clog up screen real estate with a big black bar dedicated only to

After nearly six months of build-up, the big rebirth of Windows Phone is at hand. Microsoft has been trying to make a dent in the smartphone market for more than two years, with little success. This time around, the company is hoping that better hardware, broader wireless carrier support and an emphasis on personalized experiences will lead to wider adoption. But of course, none of that’s possible without the actual phones. On Friday, the first Windows Phone 8 handsets from Nokia and HTC will launch on AT&T. Soon after, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless will launch their own handsets. For more details on Windows Phone 8, check out my colleague Harry McCracken’s overview. Below, I’ll go over the phones and where to find them. The Phones Nokia’s Lumia 920 is an AT&T exclusive, with an emphasis on photography and special apps, such as Nokia Drive for navigation and Nokia Music for ad-free curated Internet radio. Specs include a 4.5-inch, 1280-by-768 resolution display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 32 GB of storage, 1 GB of RAM and an 8.7-megapixel rear camera with low-light enhancements and image stabilization. Nokia also has a mid-range phone, called the Lumia 820. It has a 4.3-inch, 800-by-480 resolution display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 1 GB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, a MicroSD slot, an 8-megapixel camera and a VGA front-facing camera. The 820 will be available on AT&T, but T-Mobile will sell the Lumia 810, and Verizon will sell the Lumia 822, which have different designs and no wireless charging capabilities, but the same specs. (Correction: These variants do support wireless charging, just like the 820.) HTC’s Windows Phone 8X is another high-end handset with a 720p display and a slimmer, lighter design than the Lumia 920. Specs include a 4.3-inch, 1280-by-720 resolution display, a 1.5 dual-core GHz Snapdragon S4 processor, 1 GB RAM, an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. Verizon’s version has wireless charging as well. Finally there’s the Samsung ATIV S, which is similar to Samsung’s Galaxy S III
