I haven't given a nanosecond's thought to Qwikster — the weird name Netflix gave to its aborted plan to spin off its DVD-by-mail business — since 2011. But it comes up in a New York Times story today by James B. Stewart, in which Netflix CEO Reed Hastings says he felt horrible about the whole debacle, which also included an unpopular price hike. I admire Stewart's work and hoped that his article would finally explain how a company as smart as Netflix could have come up with an idea as terrible as Qwikster. But it doesn't. In fact, the whole issue is a bit of a muddle in the piece. It lauds Hastings for an apologetic 2011 blog post and links to a mea culpa video. But the post and the video only apologize for doing a bad job at explaining the price hike — and then they segue into announcing Qwikster. (The video is misleadingly labeled on YouTube — it's called “Netflix CEO Reed Hastings Apologizes for Mishandling the Change to Qwikster.”) In other words, Hastings, who was trying to undo a mistake, ended up digging himself deeper into a hole. A month later, Netflix decided that Qwikster wasn’t such a hot idea after all. Today, Netflix has more than recovered: it's back to being beloved and is doing interesting and innovative things such as going head-to-head with HBO via exclusive programming like the U.S. version of House of Cards. I hope Hastings doesn't spend much time feeling guilty about the company's midlife crisis of 2011. But I'd still love to understand just what happened.

Have a House Full of Streamers? Netflix Is Rolling Out a $12 Family Plan of Sorts

You may not realize it, but Netflix apparently has a two-stream limit for each account, meaning that I can watch SpongeBob SquarePants on my iPad at the same time my wife watches whatever could possibly be more interesting to her than SpongeBob SquarePants on her own iPad. Yes, we are a multi-iPad household. I will not apologize for that. If we someday decided to pursue the option of an open marriage — and I mean really open, like the third and fourth person would actually live here — then neither of these new people would be able to watch something using Netflix if my wife and I were both using the service on our separate iPads. Somehow, I really don’t think this scenario is going to be a problem for our family. I’m not sure about your family, though. That’s none of my business anyway. For families of more than two people — or families doing something similar to the open marriage scenario I described above — Netflix will soon be rolling out a $12 per month option that will allow for up to four simultaneous streams. The following quip from Netflix’s letter to its shareholders sums up the plan: A few members with large families run into our 2-simultaneous-stream limit. To best serve these members, we’re shortly adding a 4-stream plan, at $11.99 in the U.S., and we expect fewer than 1% of members to take it. So there you have it. Apparently less than 1% of Netflix families with more than two people try to all stream stuff at the same time. If you fit that slice of the user base, however, it looks like this plan might be for you. No word on when exactly this is rolling out, other than the appearance of the word “shortly” in the above quote. Netflix will offer $11.99 family plan with up to four simultaneous streams [The Verge]

More than a year after Netflix added Facebook connectivity in other parts of the world, U.S. users are finally getting their chance to share. Netflix’s social features are rolling out in the United States this week, allowing users to see what their Facebook friends are watching, and vice versa. Although 44 other countries have enjoyed this feature since 2011, the United States had been excluded due to an old law against disclosing people’s video sale and rental records. The law was amended in January, after a big lobbying push by Netflix. Being able to see what friends are watching could be useful when Netflix’s own recommendation algorithms fall short, which happens quite often, in my experience. Still, not everyone will want to be transparent about their viewing habits. Thankfully, sharing with Facebook is opt-in, but once you’ve done so, everything you watch gets shared automatically. Here’s how the sharing works in detail: Once sharing becomes available to you, you’ll see a dialog box on Netflix’s website asking if you want to connect with Facebook and share your viewing history. If you agree to share, the videos you’ve watched — both past and present — become visible to your Facebook friends. They’ll see your viewing history as part of a “Friends’ Favorites” list on Netflix’s website and apps, and they’ll also be able to look up what you, specifically, have watched lately. Things get a little messy if you want to pre-screen which movies and shows to share. The only way to do this is to start playing a video, then click a “Don’t Share This” button in the player during the first few minutes of playback. You can also go to the web page for that title and click the “Unshare” button. There’s no way to choose whether to share or not share a video before you actually start watching it. By default, the videos you watch don’t appear on your Facebook timeline, they only show up within Netflix itself. You can, however, add Netflix viewing history to your Facebook

It’s weird but true: of all the countless standalone Internet-TV-streaming boxes which have appeared over the past few years, just two have been unqualified successes. One is Apple TV. The other is Roku, which has thrived by offering a vast selection of stuff, driving prices down as low as $49.99 and otherwise not changing a whole lot. Its sheer simplicity is its strong suit. But it also presents a challenge. When Roku’s box debuted in 2008, it was called the Netflix player and boasted a single channel of content. Today, it has more than 750 of them, including major movie channels, music, sports, a bevy of specialty stations and 50 games. The interface, however, hasn’t evolved much since it just had a handful of items to choose from. Though still pleasingly straightforward, it’s not scaled to the quantity of offerings at hand. Roku Enter the Roku 3, which is available online now and in stores next month. Replacing the current high-end version, the $99.99 Roku 2 XS, it’s not a radical departure from a hardware standpoint. The case, which is swoopier but about the same size, packs a faster processor and more robust 2×2 dual-band wifi for snappier performance and more glitch-free streaming. The wireless remote control still incorporates motion sensors for use in casual games such as Angry Birds; now it also has a headphone jack, letting you listen to TV in bed without annoying your spouse. (The box comes with earbuds in Roku’s signature purple, but you can also use your own; basically, it turns any headphones into wireless headphones.) What’s most significant about the new Roku, though, is its new interface — and one of the most significant things about it is that it doesn’t set out to be an interesting new interface. For everything that’s new, which is an awful lot, it still looks like the overarching goal is to fade into the background rather than call attention to itself. (I got a bit of hands-on time with it during a recent briefing by Roku executives.) Until

Some day, you won’t need an all-Apple setup just to look up a video on your phone and send it over to your television — and that day may actually come sooner than you think, due to a joint effort by Netflix and YouTube. The two companies have quietly developed a protocol called DIAL that lets users find things to watch or listen to on their phones and tablets, then load up that content on the big screen. So for instance, you could look for a movie in Netflix’s Android app, then press a “Play on TV” button to to start watching on your television without ever touching your TV remote. In a way, it’s an alternative to Apple’s AirPlay, but one that doesn’t require an iOS or Mac device plus an Apple TV. The existence of DIAL isn’t a new revelation–a website describing the project came online in December–but a report by GigaOM’s Janko Roettgers claims that the effort is further along than anyone realized. Current Google TV devices, such as the Vizio Co-Star, already support DIAL, and 2012 televisions from Samsung and LG have some DIAL functionality built-in. Sony has been involved in developing the protocol as well, and other vendors may be able to add functionality through software updates, possibly within the next several months. And while Netflix and YouTube (a subsidiary of Google) are in charge of the effort, other online media companies have already signed up to take advantage of DIAL, including Hulu, Pandora, the BBC and Flingo. Don’t get too excited yet. DIAL itself only covers the discovery element, in which a phone or tablet realizes that there’s a television or set-top box on the same network, running the same apps. It’ll still be up to app makers to build in all the consumer-facing stuff, like the buttons you’d press on your phone to begin or stop TV playback. So far, only YouTube has added this capability between its Android app and Google TV devices. In other words, there’s still plenty of work to

Redbox and Verizon’s streaming video service reportedly won’t have as many movies and shows as Netflix, but it may be $2 per month cheaper. The so-called “Redbox Instant by Verizon” will cost $6 per month according to GigaOM’s Janko Roettgers, who discovered the details by looking through publicly available support documents. (The web pages in question now require a password to see.) Like Netflix, the service will provide unlimited video streaming, but will also have some other optional perks. Subscribers can pay an extra $2 per month for four nights of DVD rentals through Redbox kiosks. (Rentals usually cost $1.20 per night.) The service will also offer on-demand rentals of newer movies, starting at $0.99, with offline access to those videos available on some devices. At launch, the Redbox and Verizon service will be available on web browsers, iOS and Android devices, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and select TVs and Blu-ray players from Samsung, GigaOM reports. Despite Verizon’s involvement, anyone will be able to sign up, not just Verizon TV and Internet subscribers. Granted, the service is in closed beta now, and final pricing could change, but if those details prove accurate, Redbox Instant by Verizon would be the cheapest alternative to Netflix yet. On a yearly basis, it’d be $24 less expensive than Netflix. It would also be $9 per year less expensive than Amazon Prime, whose other perks include free two-day shipping on store orders and a free e-book catalog for Kindle devices. Still, the service wouldn’t quite be the same as those rivals in terms of selection. Paul Davis, CEO of Redbox operator Coinstar, told Fast Company last August that it wants to have a smaller, but better selection of movies than Netflix. Also, he suggested that the focus will be more on movies than television. The one thing that’s always worried me about the service is that it might play things safe so as not to endanger Verizon’s existing FiOS TV and on-demand video services. Netflix, meanwhile, can keep pursuing newer and better content without fear of cord cutting

“John Carter” was one of the biggest film flops of all time. The special-effects-heavy sci-fi epic set on Mars turned out to be an epic box office failure in the U.S. for Disney, leading to a shakeup of company executives. Even as audiences largely ignored the film, “John Carter” finds itself at the center of a battle between Disney on one side and Netflix and Redbox on the other.

If you own the highway as well as several of the vehicles that use it, is it fair to tax everyone except your drivers? That’s essentially what Comcast did when it decided to exempt its TV-based Xfinity “On Demand” service for the Xbox 360 from counting against periodic data caps, effectively un-leveling the playing field. Comcast’s defense: The service is delivered over its private IP network, not the public Internet. Should that exempt Comcast? Absolutely not, according to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. ”Comcast no longer following net neutrality principles,” writes Hastings on his Facebook page. “Comcast should apply caps equally, or not at all.” (MORE: A Netflix Cable Channel? Right for Netflix, Possibly Right for Us) Comcast’s private IP network still intersects with the Internet where streaming rivals like Netflix or Hulu are concerned. At some point, any streaming service must, by definition, traverse an ISP’s private IP network to get to consumers. Hastings says he spent the weekend “enjoying four good internet video apps on my Xbox: Netflix, HBO GO, Xfinity, and Hulu.” But he complains that while Netflix, HBO Go and Hulu count against his Comcast Internet data cap, Comcast’s Xfinity app doesn’t. Hastings continues: For example, if I watch last night’s SNL episode on my Xbox through the Hulu app, it eats up about one gigabyte of my cap, but if I watch that same episode through the Xfinity Xbox app, it doesn’t use up my cap at all. The same device, the same IP address, the same wifi, the same internet connection, but totally different cap treatment. In what way is this neutral? A simple enough question with an even simpler answer: It’s not. The question of whether it violates actual net neutrality rules as well as Comcast customers who’ll probably defend the ISP because they’re getting something for nothing notwithstanding, it’s the principle that matters here. You either make the playing field as level as possible, or establish a precedent whereby a highway’s proprietors, with their own vested traffic interests, control who pays at the toll booth
