Who doesn’t love a good meme? You know, those funny viral videos, images and ecards that seem to take over the Internet (and your Facebook feed) for a week or two and then disappear into web. Everyone likes to join in with their own version of what that apparently-drunk baby or too-serious-for-you cat has to say. Surprisingly, the review section of Amazon products is one place for people to indulge in their love for memes. Whether the products are Internet famous before they were listed on Amazon or quickly became infamous for reasons you’ll discover below, each one of these has become the focal point of viral humor on the world’s biggest retailer site. Amazon The gift that keeps on…no, just no Easily the coolest thing since sliced bread, the Hutzler 571 Banana Slicer slices an entire banana in one quick motion! Imagine the time you’ll save every single morning by slicing your banana in one shot, rather than using a plain old knife! Plus, as the manufacturer points out, children just love slicing their own bananas! Apparently all the cool kids are doing it these days. Such a useless item quickly became a target for Amazon reviewers. Mrs. Toledo exclaims: “What can I say about the 571B Banana Slicer that hasn’t already been said about the wheel, penicillin, or the iPhone…. this is one of the greatest inventions of all time!” SW3k reported on his life changing experience after using this miracle product: “No longer consumed by seething anger and animosity towards thick-skinned yellow fruit, I was able to concentrate on my love of theatre and am writing a musical play about two lovers from rival gangs that just try to make it in the world.” Uncle Pooky offers this final word of wisdom: “Once I figured out I had to peel the banana before using – it works much better!” Amazon Can I get that with a side of “What the what?” Quick, what three words immediately come to mind when you hear “horse head mask“? “Awesome conversation piece,” right? Right! If disturbing your friends (and

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Amazon is working on “a high-end smartphone featuring a screen that allows for 3-D images without glasses.” This rumor comes to us courtesy of “people familiar with the company’s plans,” according to the Journal. Whether true or not, it shouldn’t come as an earth shattering surprise that Amazon might be working on some sort of smartphone — the company has found success in hardware devices such as its Kindle e-book readers and Kindle Fire tablets. Oh, and speculation about an Amazon smartphone has been going on since what seems like the day after the first Kindle Fire tablet was introduced (see here, here and here, for starters). However, to tout glasses-free 3D in 2013 as a major feature of a smartphone seems downright insane. We saw a handful of glasses-free 3D smartphones trickle out a few years ago, consumers yawned, and now — surprise, surprise – we don’t hear much about glasses-free 3D smartphones. The Journal‘s description of this miraculous glasses-free 3D technology certainly sounds impressive — especially the bit about being able to navigate stuff with your eyeballs: One of the devices is a high-end smartphone featuring a screen that allows for 3-D images without glasses, these people said. Using retina-tracking technology, images on the smartphone would seem to float above the screen like a hologram and appear three-dimensional at all angles, they said. Users may be able to navigate through content using just their eyes, two of the people said. But a somewhat less enthusiastic gadget user *might* read into that as a gimmick paired with a second gimmick. If the phone itself is cool and the gimmick-plus-gimmick 3D thing turns out to be a nonessential added feature, so be it. Actually, what the hell: make it the main feature and promote it heavily. I want to see what happens. The Journal also reports that Amazon is working on a second smartphone, along with “an audio-only streaming device.” The audio device would make sense given Amazon’s ownership of Audible.com; another smartphone

The battle for cheap tablet supremacy usually flares up only once a year. As the Christmas shopping season rolls around, we often see new tablets from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and low-cost slates from other companies trying to keep up. But if you’re getting interested in picking up a budget tablet just now, the middle of the year is looking pretty good. Right now, Amazon and Barnes & Noble are both offering discounts on their respective Kindle Fire and Nook tablets, in honor of Mother’s Day: 7-inch Nook HD: $149 for 8 GB, $179 for 16 GB ($50 discount) 8.9-inch Nook HD+: $179 for 16 GB, $209 for 32 GB ($90 discount) 7-inch Kindle Fire HD: $179 for 16 GB with FIRE4MOM coupon code ($20 discount) Granted, these price drops are temporary, but in the past both companies have foreshadowed permanent price cuts with these kinds of promotions. Amazon, for instance, slashed prices on the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD last March, just a month after offering discounts for Valentine’s Day. Although the company has yet make a permanent price cut to its 7-inch tablet, I’ll be surprised if its not coming soon, given the lower price of Barnes & Noble’s Nook (with its newfound Google Play support). Other hardware makers are figuring out how to play the cheap tablet game as well. Acer just announced the the Iconia A1 for $169. It’s an Android tablet with the same screen resolution and aspect ratio as Apple’s iPad Mini, but for half the price. HP just launched its own cheap Android tablet, the Slate 7, also for $169. Analyst Ross Rubin put it succinctly on Twitter last week: Android tablets; $169 is the new $199.— Ross Rubin (@rossrubin) May 03, 2013 That’s not all. Next week, Google is holding a developer conference in San Francisco, where the company will likely announce a follow-up to its Nexus 7 tablet. Will Google stick with a $200 price tag? Maybe, but odds are that the company will drop the price on the current model,

By now, it’s clear that anyone who thought tablets were a fad is dead wrong. According to IDC, tablet makers shipped 49.2 million units during the first quarter of 2013, for an increase of 142 percent over the same period a year ago. PC sales, meanwhile, are down to 76.3 million units shipped. At this rate, it’s safe to assume tablets will overtake PCs by the end of the year. IDC’s figures aren’t gospel, because for the most part they aren’t based on official numbers from hardware vendors. But as a general sense of what’s going on, they provide us with a few interesting takeaways: Apple Isn’t In Tablet Trouble Percentage-wise, Apple’s tablet shipments aren’t growing as quickly as the competition. Samsung, for instance, enjoyed 283 percent year-over-year growth. Asus’ shipments went up by 350 percent, while Amazon’s shipments went up by 157 percent. Apple’s growth? A mere 65 percent. The difference led CNet to wonder whether Apple is “losing its edge” to other tablet makers. No, it’s not. For one thing, the numbers for Apple represent sales to end users, rather than shipments, so it’s possible that the company has shipped many more units than IDC’s figures let on. Even if we ignore that discrepancy, iPad “shipments” increased by 7.7 million, compared to 10.6 million for the next four tablet makers combined. And most of those companies only boosted their market share by sacrificing profits and selling tablets for dirt-cheap–something Apple hasn’t done to nearly the same extent. Other tablet makers are addressing a part of the market that Apple hasn’t, but that doesn’t mean they’re eating Apple’s lunch. Amazon Isn’t Destroying Android Just like last year, Amazon’s tablet shipments dropped off big time after the holidays, with just 1.8 million Kindle Fires shipped, compared to 6 million in Q4 2012, but it’s not as bad as it looks. Shipments don’t equal sales to end-users, and as NPD analyst Stephen Baker pointed out a year ago, Amazon tends to ship lots of units during the holidays, and then sell them

It’s a double deal Monday, with Amazon lopping $50 off each of its large-format Kindle HD tablets and Best Buy trimming iPhone prices by $50 as well. Starting with the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD, you can get the Wi-Fi version starting at $249 for the 16GB model “with special offers,” which are basically ads that show on the tablet’s lock screen when it’s not being used. An extra $15 will get rid of those ads; the 32GB version with ads is going for $319, or $334 without ads. The Kindle Fire HD with built-in 4G LTE wireless gets the same $50 off deal. Prices start at $449, and you can get 250 megabytes per month of AT&T 4G LTE wireless service for a once-a-year fee of $50. For any of these Kindle Fire HD deals, you’ll need to enter promo code FIREHD89 at checkout to get the savings. The deal is good today only. Moving right along to Best Buy, you can get $50 off an iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S with a two-year contract. Prices start at $150 for the iPhone 5 (normally $200) and $50 for the iPhone 4S (normally $100). The phones are available through AT&T, Sprint or Verizon and, again, you’ll need to agree to a two-year contract for this deal. You have a little more time to cash in on this deal: It’s good until January 5.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are behind us, and Amazon wants us to know that its ever-expanding line of Kindles sold well. Great news! But as usual, the company isn’t willing to share actual numbers. So it’s bragging in a vague manner which basically boils down to “the Kindle is selling better than ever.” Milestones for Kindle sales this holiday shopping weekend include: Cyber Monday 2012 was the biggest day ever for Kindle sales worldwide. The top 4 spots on the worldwide Amazon best sellers list since launch nearly three months ago are Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fires. To celebrate Cyber Monday, Amazon.com offered a special deal—just $129 for the Kindle Fire. Customers flocked to the deal, making this the biggest Cyber Monday deal ever for Amazon.com. Kindle Fire HD is the most gifted and most wished for product on Amazon worldwide since launch. 9 out of the top 10 best-selling products on Amazon worldwide since 9/6 are Kindles, Kindle accessories and digital content. By not revealing actual numbers, Amazon prevents anyone from answering the most interesting single question at the moment: How are the Kindle Fire models doing now that they’re competing with Apple’s iPad Mini? Apple, which usually does talk in terms of specific numbers, told us that it sold three million iPad Mini units iPads of all sorts in the first weekend after the iPad Mini’s release. [CORRECTION: In the first version of the post, I said that Apple sold three million Minis.] It doesn’t seem wildly presumptuous to assume that the Kindle Fire isn’t selling faster than that — if a Kindle ever does better than the iPad, Amazon will surely break its vow of silence — but I’d love to know how it stacked up. I don’t mean to yank Amazon’s chain too hard: As far as I know, Barnes & Noble, Google, Samsung and other tabletmakers haven’t released hard numbers, either. Still, it’ll be a big day for the tablet market when Amazon — or anyone else who isn’t Apple — is proud enough of a device’s sales to, you know, tell us what they are.

With the iPad Mini, Apple has decided to enter the cheap tablet fray–sort of. Apple’s smaller, lighter iPad costs $329 and up, quite a bit more than Google’s Nexus 7, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD and Barnes & Noble’s Nook HD, all of which start at $200. Still, it’s clearly aimed at sapping some customers from the realm of inexpensive tablets, so a comparison is in order. Here’s a look at what each budget tablet has to offer compared to the rest: Apple’s iPad Mini Pros: A 7.9-inch display doesn’t sound like much over other 7-inch tablets, but because the iPad Mini’s aspect ratio is 4:3, compared to 16:9 or 16:10 on other tablets, it’s a lot wider in portrait mode and taller in landscape. Yet it’s also thinner and lighter than the other tablets available, and it has both front- and rear-facing cameras. The main advantage, though, is in the software. No other app store comes close to Apple’s selection of 275,000 tablet-optimized apps, and Apple’s iOS operating system is as smooth and stable as it gets. Cons: The price could be a dealbreaker, especially if you want more than 16 GB of storage. Apple charges $429 for a 32 GB iPad Mini, and $529 for a 64 GB one. And 4G LTE models are available, but they’re also pricey, adding $130 to the total cost. (See Also: Pricing Guide: iPad Mini, iPad 2 and iPad with Retina Display) Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD Pros: Out of all the $200 tablets, Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD has the largest selection of movies, shows, music and books, and if you have an Amazon Prime subscription ($79 per year), you get a selection of streaming videos and e-book rentals at at no extra charge. Amazon is further ahead than its competitors on support for connected TV devices, so you can start watching a video on the tablet and resume it on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Roku and lots of other set-top boxes. It also includes a useful children’s mode called FreeTime, which lets parents
