Cell phone users, are you plagued by dropped calls? Is your download speed slow as molasses? Does using your mobile phone often involve leaning out a window? Well, that could be because you live in one of the ten following U.S. cities. As part of TIME’s look at how wireless technology is changing our lives, we partnered with data firm OpenSignalMaps to find out which places with populations over 250,000 had the spottiest service.

You do not want to talk to me on the phone. How do I know? Because I don’t want to talk to you on the phone. Nothing personal, I just can’t stand the thing. I find it intrusive and somehow presumptuous. It sounds off insolently whenever it chooses and expects me to drop whatever I’m doing and, well, engage. With others! When I absolutely must, I take the call, but I don’t do a very good job of concealing my displeasure. A close family member once offered his opinion that I exhibit the phone manners of a goat, then promptly withdrew the charge — out of fairness to goats. So it was with profound relief that I embraced the arrival of e-mail and, later, texting. They meant a conversation I could control — utterly. I get to say exactly what I want exactly when I want to say it. It consumes no more time than I want it to and, to a much greater degree than is possible with a phone call, I get to decide if it takes place at all. That might make me misanthropic. It surely makes me a crank. But it doesn’t make me unusual. (Read about the TIME Mobility Poll here.) The telephone call is a dying institution. The number of text messages sent monthly in the U.S. exploded from 14 billion in 2000 to 188 billion in 2010, according to a Pew Institute survey, and the trend shows no signs of abating. Not all of that growth has come out of the hide of old-fashioned phoning, but it is clearly taking a bite — particularly among the young. Americans ages 18-29 send and receive an average of nearly 88 text messages per day, compared to 17 phone calls. The numbers change as we get older, with the overall frequency of all communication declining, but even in the 65 and over group, daily texting still edges calling 4.7 to 3.8. In the TIME mobility poll, 32% of all respondents said they’d rather communicate by text

David Jesse can’t afford to get sick. As a truck driver who logs 10,000 to 12,000 miles a month on the road, he’s rarely home long enough to visit a doctor’s office. But if he isn’t healthy, he can’t drive, according to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations — and if he doesn’t drive, he can’t earn a paycheck. That’s why the 50-year-old got a scare in 2008, after a physical revealed he had high blood pressure. He had been getting headaches, but thought they were due to stress; he ignored them and continued to drive. But as his doctor discovered, the throbbing in Jesse’s head was a symptom of his vessels straining under the pressure from his surging blood flow, which exceeded the threshold of 160/100 mmHg that the DOT requires of all drivers. Jesse’s physician at the Cleveland Clinic prescribed medication, but hypertension can’t be treated like an infection, with a set dose of drugs. Each patient reacts differently to the medication, and doctors often need to adjust dosages and switch to different drugs before settling on the most effective one. Jesse, however, didn’t have the luxury of coming in every three to six months to have his blood pressure and other symptoms checked. “If I can’t match the federal government threshold, then I get into a whole new ball game,” he says. “Then I have to have physicals every three months or six months, and it gets to really be a hassle. Eventually, if I can’t get my pressure down, I’ll be denied my livelihood.” (Read about the TIME Mobility Poll here.) Fortunately for him, it didn’t come to that. Every night before going to bed, he takes his blood pressure with a digital device that sends the reading via Bluetooth to his cell phone, which then automatically updates his electronic medical record stored at the Cleveland Clinic. His wife Paula, a nurse there, makes sure to alert Jesse’s doctor if the readings spike or drop below the normal range. Thanks to this system, he’s been able to

For almost as long as people have been interested in video games, they’ve been interested in mobile gaming — and in some cases even longer. Before Pac-Man, before Asteroids, before Donkey Kong, there was Auto Race. The 1976 handheld game, developed by toymaker Mattel, consisted of navigating your “car” — a blinking light — into one of three lanes of traffic, avoiding the other blinking lights. You had four gears to play with, too. It was a good start, although the company’s follow-up is perhaps better remembered. Released in 1977, it was simply called Football, and consisted of navigating your ball carrier – again, a blinking light – downfield while trying to avoid being “tackled” by another blinking light. Both games’ controls were simple and there were no graphics, so to speak — but damn it, you could play anywhere as long as the 9-volt battery held out. Nintendo upped the ante a bit starting in 1980 with its Game & Watch series of handheld, tabletop and dual-screen portables. The collection produced such gems as Balloon Fight, Donkey Kong Jr., Mario Bros., Pinball and Zelda. Each machine superfluously doubled as a clock with alarm features (hence the “Watch” part of Game & Watch) and the series enjoyed about a decade of popularity until Nintendo moved to popularize an even newer era of handheld gaming. (Read about the TIME Mobility Poll here.) Nintendo’s 1989 release of the Game Boy is arguably one of the most important moments in mobile gaming history. Similar to how the Nintendo Entertainment System — which hit the U.S. in 1985 — connected to your TV to bring an arcade-like experience into your home, the Game Boy aimed to shrink the home console experience so that it fit in your hands. The screen was black and white, it had no backlight and there were never enough AA batteries around when you needed them. But from day one, Super Mario Bros. addicts could mainline Super Mario Land to tide them over. And everyone had Tetris. Who hasn’t played

In July, TIME asked readers all over the world to take pictures with their phones and post them on Instagram with the tag #TIMEwireless. We received 31,429 submissions, from more than 120 countries and all seven continents (including a few from Antarctica’s McMurdo Station). Here, for your viewing pleasure, TIME’s photo editors single out our fifteen favorite pictures submitted for this project — you can see 288 of them on this week’s cover of TIME.
