LAS VEGAS (AP) — Poker devotees will soon be able to skip the smoky casino and legally gamble their dollars away on the couch – at least in the state of Nevada. A Las Vegas-based social gambling company is expected to launch the first legal, real-money poker website in the United States on Tuesday morning. The site, run by Ultimate Gaming, will accept wagers only from players in Nevada for now, but likely represents the shape of things to come for gamblers across the country. Internet poker, never fully legal, has been strictly outlawed since 2011, when the Department of Justice seized the domain names of the largest offshore sites catering to U.S. customers and blacked them out. This crackdown, dubbed “black Friday,” left poker fanatics with two options: They could either get dressed and visit a visit a card room, or break the law and log into an offshore site. More recently, the federal government softened its stance on Internet betting, and three states – New Jersey, Delaware and Nevada- have legalized some form of online wagering within their borders. With Tuesday’s launch, Nevada wins the race to bring Texas Hold `em back to the Internet. “There was black Friday, and now we’re going to have `trusting Tuesday,’” said Ultimate Gaming CEO Tobin Prior. “Players won’t have to worry if their money is safe. They are going to be able to play with people they can trust and know the highest regulatory standards have been applied.” The site, UltimatePoker.com, will look familiar to anyone who participated in the poker craze of the 2000s. Only the account setup and login process have changed. Instead of checking a box certifying they are older than 18, players will have to endure a lengthy account setup process involving a Social Security number and a Nevada address. Only those older than 21 will be allowed to play. Ultimate Gaming and the two dozen other companies still fine-tuning their Nevada poker sites hope they will win the trust not only of players, but of regulators

When it rains, it pours: Electronic Arts, currently grappling with game-breaking SimCity server issues as well as the surprise resignation of CEO John Riccitiello, might have to add “millions of players at risk of being hacked” to its list of woes. It seems EA’s Origin gaming service may place tens of millions of players (the service has around 40 million members total) at risk thanks to a design flaw that allows a hacker to execute malicious code on a targeted user’s system remotely. EA Origin is EA’s digital distribution platform as well as anti-piracy mechanism, operating as a sort of relay between players and EA’s game servers similar to Valve’s older, more popular Steam service. EA games like DICE’s Battlefield 3 or EA Maxis’ SimCity require the EA Origin client to run, and it’s an exploitable flaw in that process on Windows PCs, whereby the Origin client employs web-like addresses to access games, that’s at issue. The paper outlining the exploit, titled “EA Origin Insecurity (When Local Bugs Go Remote.. Again),” was actually published in late February, so it’s likely making waves now because of all this other EA-related chatter — it didn’t just happen yesterday, in other words — but it is worth being aware of what’s at stake, since EA hasn’t addressed the problem, and there may be steps you can take to safeguard yourself until they do. The research team responsible for outing the exploit operates under the company name [Re]Vuln Ltd. and consists of two people: one a former security researcher for Research in Motion, the other describing himself as an “independent security researcher.” How does the exploit work? According to the researchers, if you’re launching an EA Origin game from a website or desktop shortcut, a hacker could abuse the “Origin URI handling mechanism,” meaning Origin links styled by the URI handler as “origin://” plus game, game ID, command parameters and an attacker’s payload. The exploit still requires hackers suss your game ID, but if they do, they could easily slip attack code in — say a remote DLL

An evil-but-clever anonymous game fan, writing under the name X-Surface, has done us all a favor by showing us how little fact-checking some news sources do before they start treating random rumors as fact: At 1:41am GMT today I sent out an email to a bunch of gaming sites claiming to be a Microsoft employee working on the new Xbox. I made up every single word of it along with a couple of specs copied from other rumours that have been appearing on the Internet. This was a bit of an experiment to see just how easy it is to get a fake story taken seriously. And it is shockingly easy in the games industry. British tech site Pocket-lint’s Rik Henderson not only reported on the rumor, but kept forgetting that it was random unverified scuttlebutt from a source which he had no reason to trust: The Xbox 720 will not be called that when it is finally announced. Instead, Microsoft will be reverting to the name of its first games console released 11 years ago, Xbox. In addition, it will be seen as a hub to a number of devices to carry an “X” branding, one of which will be the much-rumoured 7-inch gaming tablet, which Pocket-lint has learnt will be called X-Surface, not Xbox Surface as previously thought. The X-Surface will not be a Windows 8 or Windows RT device, we have been told by a tipster very close to the project who, naturally, wishes to remain anonymous. Instead, it will be a standalone portable gaming system. On launch, we are informed, it will be able to access the games, music and video hubs of the new Xbox, but will not have any apps of its own. It will not have a desktop as part of its operating system, rather be entirely focused on playing full console-quality games. After Henderson wrote that, a bunch of other sites picked up on the “scoop” with various degrees of credulousness. (To be fair, Gizmodo UK’s Gary Cutlack covered it mostly to say that several parts of it sounded unlikely.)

Here’s an interesting fact that came out of the recent debate over gun control: Thanks to the U.S. Congress, the government has been unable to fully research firearm safety for the last 16 years. In 1996, as Reuters tells it, the National Rifle Association pressured lawmakers into cutting $2.6 million worth of Centers for Disease Control funding, which was being used for firearms research. Congress later restored the funds, but with a restriction on any research that “may be used to advocate or promote gun control.” Apparently the NRA had been dismissing past studies as “anti-gun propaganda,” but it’s hard to see the group as anything but afraid of what we might learn through more research. Now that President Obama wants Congress to fund research into violent video games, I’m sad to see a parallel among some of my fellow gamers and game journalists, who think the government should just leave games alone. “Dear Mr. President, We are not ignorant about the relationship between media including videogames and violence. Studies show there isn’t one,” Garnett Lee, Editorial Director of GameFly Media, wrote on Twitter. “No matter how many studies show no links, it’ll never be seen as a reason to not fund another one,” Wired Editor Chris Kohler wrote. Sorry, but I can’t join in on this collective freak out. For as defensive as I am about video games, and my right to enjoy them like any other form of speech, I draw the line at declaring we don’t need any more knowledge. True, there isn’t much strong evidence to prove that violent video games make children violent in the real world. That’s why, in 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to let California outlaw the sale of violent games to minors. The state didn’t have enough evidence to prove that violent video games cause violence — certainly not more than any other media — so just like the movie and music industries, the video game industry gets to regulate itself. It uses its own ratings system, and retailers take it upon themselves

The final debate has come and gone, and I spent it parked in front of my Xbox 360, tapping answers with my gamepad to poll questions that appeared onscreen at a rapid-fire rate roughly twice that of the second presidential showdown. The winner? Obama, according to voters who identified as “undecided,” picking Obama by 56% versus just 14% for Romney and 31% who declared it a draw. Where Microsoft and YouGov asked about 70 questions in a 90-minute period last time — a little less than one per minute — they managed to squeeze some 130 into the final 90-minute debate, collecting an impressive three million responses with between 30,000 and 35,000 respondents weighing in per question. For the most part, I enjoyed the process, answering and watching questions play out in real time, like “Do you support the way the U.S. has responded to fatal attacks on Americans in Libya?” (of undecideds, 18% said yes, 38% said no and 44% chose “not sure”), or “Is the U.S. safer from terrorism than four years ago?” (of undecideds, 45% said yes, 27% said no and 28% chose “about the same”), or “Who is being more truthful?” (of undecideds, 38% said Obama, 14% said Romney and 48% chose “don’t know”). But I occasionally took issue with the way the poll questions were asked. Take this one, which appeared more than once over the course of the debate: “If you were to vote today, which candidate would you choose?” Allowed answers: Obama, Romney, or “not sure.” What about “neither”? What about “I support a third-party candidate”? Sadly not options. Those who supported an alternative candidate were forced to answer (or just ignore) the implied question: “Who would I vote for if I could only pick between these two?” Did Microsoft and YouGov have to agree to stipulations by the Commission on Presidential Debates in order to stream the debates? Was asking about third parties off limits, as is bringing them into the debates per the CPD’s so-called 15% rule? Despite the Green or Libertarian Party

Guild Wars 2 is finally here! Or wait, wasn’t it already here three days ago? And…okay, hold on a second, didn’t it somehow launch just yesterday, too? The answer is: a little from columns A, B and C. It’s all so confusing, but in a good way, because it means ArenaNet had a launch for you, and you, and you too. And it also means the developer is already able to share metrics like sales-so-far and “peak concurrent users,” a fancy online gaming term for the most people playing online simultaneously. (MORE: Guild Wars 2: It’s the Pinball Machine of MMOs) Technically, Guild Wars 2 launched last Friday at midnight for players who’d pre-purchased the game as part of a “3-day Headstart” phase. It also managed to do a few things MMOs never do, like arrive exactly on time without disastrous game-collapsing bugs. Then it launched a second time on Monday as part of a “1-day Headstart” deal for players who pre-ordered the game, which…yeah, I don’t understand the difference there either. As a three-day early guy, I just heard about the one-day option for the first time yesterday while jogging to a Guild Wars 2 podcast. In any case, publisher NCsoft is sharing preliminary numbers for all you MMO comparison wonks: Over one million players paid to play the game ($60 standard, $150 collector’s, and it’s free-to-play thereafter) during the three-day early start. And that’s not counting the one-day preorders or, obviously, whatever sales the game enjoys today as it officially launches. So that’s sales, but how many people are actually playing this thing? During the headstart phase, NCsoft says demand for the game topped 400,000 simultaneous online players, calling it a “record-breaking” figure for an MMO pre-launch. Outside of pre-launch, a game like World of Warcraft has seen peak concurrent users of over 800,000 and my understanding is that top PCU figures for an MMO are around one million unless we start pulling in crazy-big China-based stuff like Zheng Tu Online or Fantasy Westward Journey. Still — and don’t get too excited
