Over at 9to5Mac.com, Mark Gurman reports that Apple’s design honcho Jony Ive has quite a drastic change in store for the next version of iOS — the software that runs on the iPhone and iPad. Gurman has a solid track record with Apple rumors, and this latest one reveals: “Sources have described iOS 7 as ‘black, white, and flat all over.’” “This refers to the dropping of heavy textures and the addition of several new black and white user interface elements,” says Gurman. The problem, it seems, is one of longevity. According to Gurman: Ive stated that software designs filled with physical metaphors do not stand the test of time, according to a person familiar with the design meetings. According to this person, Ive also shared that because iOS’s current applications have several differing designs, Apple’s users could become confused. For example, the current yellow notepad-inspired Notes app contrasts significantly from the silver-textured Maps, blue and white Mail, and casino-inspired Game Center apps. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about the rumored flattening-out of iOS, but Gurman’s piece is definitely worth a read, as it contains what he believes to be several additional changes to the software. Me? I’m fine with iOS flattening out and becoming more modern-looking. I’m not completely convinced that it won’t throw certain segments of the iPhone-owning population into a tizzy, though. What’s really long overdue is a complete revamping of the selection of stock ringtones. I know you can download your own ringtones, but man, are the standard ones bad. The robot one gets me every time. Bad, bad, bad. Jony Ive’s new look for iOS 7: black, white, and flat all over [9to5Mac]

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Amazon is working on “a high-end smartphone featuring a screen that allows for 3-D images without glasses.” This rumor comes to us courtesy of “people familiar with the company’s plans,” according to the Journal. Whether true or not, it shouldn’t come as an earth shattering surprise that Amazon might be working on some sort of smartphone — the company has found success in hardware devices such as its Kindle e-book readers and Kindle Fire tablets. Oh, and speculation about an Amazon smartphone has been going on since what seems like the day after the first Kindle Fire tablet was introduced (see here, here and here, for starters). However, to tout glasses-free 3D in 2013 as a major feature of a smartphone seems downright insane. We saw a handful of glasses-free 3D smartphones trickle out a few years ago, consumers yawned, and now — surprise, surprise – we don’t hear much about glasses-free 3D smartphones. The Journal‘s description of this miraculous glasses-free 3D technology certainly sounds impressive — especially the bit about being able to navigate stuff with your eyeballs: One of the devices is a high-end smartphone featuring a screen that allows for 3-D images without glasses, these people said. Using retina-tracking technology, images on the smartphone would seem to float above the screen like a hologram and appear three-dimensional at all angles, they said. Users may be able to navigate through content using just their eyes, two of the people said. But a somewhat less enthusiastic gadget user *might* read into that as a gimmick paired with a second gimmick. If the phone itself is cool and the gimmick-plus-gimmick 3D thing turns out to be a nonessential added feature, so be it. Actually, what the hell: make it the main feature and promote it heavily. I want to see what happens. The Journal also reports that Amazon is working on a second smartphone, along with “an audio-only streaming device.” The audio device would make sense given Amazon’s ownership of Audible.com; another smartphone

While we’d certainly like to see an iPad Mini with a Retina display this year, months of rumors have produced no compelling evidence that it’s going to happen. If anything, we’re less certain about the prospect than ever in light of several conflicting reports. Thanks for nothing, rumor mill! The latest scuttlebutt is a puzzler, courtesy of Richard Shim at NPD DisplaySearch (via CNet and Business Insider). Shim says Apple is on track to ship an iPad Mini with a Retina display this fall, but with the same A5 processor as the current model. A more powerful version, he said, will follow in the first quarter of 2014. Unless Apple has pulled off some miraculous engineering, in which a two year-old processor can power quadruple the pixels at no apparent cost to overall performance, NPD’s story doesn’t add up. At a resolution of 2048-by-1536, a Retina-display iPad Mini would have four times as many pixels as the non-Retina model. It takes more power to handle all those pixels, which is why Apple introduced the A5x chip in the third-generation iPad last year. Speaking to Business Insider, Shim had no explanation for why Apple might use an A5 chip instead, or how that would even work. At this point, I’d usually turn to other rumors to figure out some sort of consensus — an Apple tea leaf triangulation, if you will — but consensus on the next iPad Mini is hard to find. Here’s a sampling of other recent rumors with conflicting information: In December, Chinese website Zol.com.cn said a Retina iPad Mini would soon begin mass production, with an A6X processor. Contradicting that report, Chinese-language site, MyDrivers.com, claimed that small-scale production had begun on a Retina iPad Mini 2, but with an A5X processor. In March, Chinese website CNYes said the Retina-equipped Mini was on track to launch in the fall, with no word on processing power. iMore, a fairly reliable Apple rumor source, claimed that the next iPads could debut “as soon as April.” Didn’t happen. The site cautioned that a Retina

LOS ANGELES (AP) — YouTube is set to announce within a few weeks a series of channels that will require payment, a person familiar with the matter said Monday. The content on the new pay channels will be in addition to the millions of videos viewers watch for free on YouTube. It’s not clear whether the paid videos will come with advertising. The person was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. The Financial Times reported earlier that viewers would be charged as little as $1.99 a month for subscriptions. In a statement, YouTube said it is looking into creating a “subscription platform” that provides its partners with a way to generate revenue beyond video rentals and placing ads in and around content. It said, however, that it had “nothing to announce at this time.” Executives hinted at the coming pay channels at a preview event in March ahead of a meeting in New York with advertisers. Such a model could help video producers make money from niche audiences. That’s different from how YouTube works now, where the most popular videos, like PSY’s “Gangnam Style” music video, make the most money from advertising. One example given by executives was of video lessons by a computer science teacher. “For people who create great value but for only a narrow interest group, I think that the potential for pay channels unlocks opportunities for creating revenue streams,” said Lucas Watson, YouTube’s vice president of sales and marketing, at the time. Introducing pay channels would also accustom fans of YouTube to paying for content, something the site is not known for, although it has sold and rented movies and TV shows from major studios since late 2008. “It’s a whole new skill set to develop: to convince people to actually take out their credit card, even for one cent,” said Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s vice president and global head of content partnerships, told reporters at the March event. Google Inc. bought YouTube for $1.76 billion in 2006 when the video site

The odds are looking good that Apple will ditch the textured, bubbly look of its iOS software in favor of something more modern. Citing “multiple people who have either seen or have been briefed” on iOS 7, 9to5Mac reports that the software for iPhones and iPads will sport a flatter look: The new interface is said to be ‘very, very flat,’ according to one source. Another person said that the interface loses all signs of gloss, shine, and skeuomorphism seen across current and past versions of iOS. Another source framed the new OS as having a level of ‘flatness’ approaching recent releases of Microsoft’s Windows Phone ‘Metro’ [user interface]. We’ve heard a similar story before. Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Jonathan Ive, Apple’s senior vice president of industrial design, was pushing for a flatter look across iOS. A few questions come to mind: Given that both Windows Phone and Android have pushed toward modern software aesthetics, this seems like a rare instance where Apple is following the pack. Can Apple flatten out iOS in a way that seems fresh and original? How big of a shift will this be for users? Will user-interface elements work differently or is this strictly an aesthetic change? To what extent will the changes affect third-party apps, and how much work will they have to do to flatten out their own software? We’ll likely find out on June 10, when Apple kicks off its Worldwide Developers Conference. The company is promising an “in-depth look at what’s next in iOS and OS X” during the event.

As phone makers push screen sizes ever-larger, it seems like just a matter of time before Windows Phone gets in on the phablet craze. Citing unnamed sources, Financial Times reports that Nokia is working on one such gargantuan phone. Details are scarce, but the report claims that Nokia’s phablet will outshine Samsung’s Galaxy Note in tech specs and will be the “most innovative” product in Nokia’s 2013 lineup. It’s just a rumor, and even if it’s true, Nokia’s plans could always change. But at this point, it seems pretty likely that some phone makers will give phablets a shot on the Windows Phone platform. (Phablets, if you’re not hip to the silly tech jargon, generally refers to phones with displays larger than five inches, but smaller than seven inches.) Why has it taken so long? Until about a year ago, it wasn’t clear whether people actually wanted oversized phones. But with Samsung selling well over 5 million Galaxy Note II handsets–at a faster rate than the original Note–the phablet is clearly here to stay. Other companies, like LG and Huawai, have since debuted their own gigantic phones. The problem with Windows Phone 8 is that it doesn’t support screen resolutions above 720p, and at this point phone makers would much rather use 1080p displays and market them as high-end handsets. That’s why HTC reportedly scrapped its plans for a Windows Phone phablet late last year. Limits on processing power may have also played a role, as current Windows Phones may only use dual-core chips. But with the next version of Windows Phone, Microsoft reportedly will support 1080p, and will specifically allow phones with five- to six-inch displays, according to both ZDNet and The Verge. It’s possible that the software will even adjust to these larger devices by showing an extra column of Live Tiles on the home screen. Support for quad-core processors may be added as well. In other words, the stage is set for jumbo Windows Phones. The challenge for Nokia, or for Microsoft, will be to offer software features

What if Microsoft released not one but two new Xbox consoles: one designed to cater to boutique next-gen spenders, another more palatable, price-wise, if not as forward-looking? We may find out next month, according to Microsoft maven Paul Thurrott, who revealed on What The Tech – in no uncertain terms — to expect Microsoft’s big reveal in May. “Originally they were going to announce this thing in April, April 24, now they’re going to announce it, you know, May 21st,” said Thurrott during the show, which aired last Friday. What’s more, Thurrott says the next-gen box we’ve all come to know (rightly or wrongly) as “Durango” will cost big-big: $500, to be precise, or perhaps $300 for a less tricked-out version (smaller hard drive?) with a subscription, says Thurrott. Subscription to what? Presumably whatever Xbox LIVE morphs into. What about a less expensive next-gen Xbox that wouldn’t play games — something to compete, say, more with Roku or Apple TV? Thurrott says, “That device was codenamed ‘Yuma’ and they’re not making it. They may make one in the future but it’s not happening this year.” Except maybe it is happening in the guise of a budget-priced Xbox 360: Thurrott says Microsoft plans to release a cheaper Xbox 360, codenamed “Stingray,” for $100. He reasons they’ll do this partly to keep the Xbox 360 market alive, because he doesn’t think the $500 Xbox will play Xbox 360 games (that is, no backward compatibility), though he cautions, “That I don’t actually know. That I’m guessing.” In any event, a $100 Xbox 360 might be competitive with Roku or Apple TV (as a media center box), but only if Microsoft pulled stuff like Netflix and Hulu outside its subscription-based Xbox LIVE paywall. Last but not least, Thurrott says the information he received “a long time ago” about this next-gen Xbox did in fact include reference to “always online.” “…it actually says, ‘must be Internet-connected to use,’ that’s in the notes,” he says, whatever that ultimately means. Assuming any of this is true and reflective of current design

Microsoft is apparently making room for smaller Windows 8 tablets that could compete with devices like Amazon’s Kindle Fire and Apple’s iPad Mini. As spotted by Ed Bott at ZDNet, Microsoft’s certification guidelines for Windows 8 now allow for tablets with resolutions as low as 1024-by-768. That’s the same screen resolution and aspect ratio as the iPad Mini, and while Microsoft doesn’t exactly say it’s inviting smaller Windows 8 tablets, you can read between the lines: This doesn’t imply that we’re encouraging partners to regularly use a lower screen resolution. In fact, we see customers embracing the higher resolution screens that make a great Windows experience. We understand that partners exploring designs for certain markets could find greater design flexibility helpful. Smaller tablets have become popular in recent months because of their lower prices and greater portability. Market research groups IHS and DisplaySearch see 7- and 8-inch tablets as growing faster than larger screen sizes, possibly overtaking larger tablet sales in the next year or two. But at the moment, no sub-10-inch Windows 8 tablets exist, possibly because of the minimum 1366-by-768 resolution Microsoft requires for certification. On smaller displays, that widescreen aspect ratio would make the screen seem too skinny. The relaxed requirements allow for tablets that would run wider in portrait mode, or taller in landscape mode. There is one big drawback, though: Tablets that drop below 1366-by-768 won’t be able to use Windows 8′s Snap feature, which lets a second Windows Store app run in a sidebar next to the main app. Snap is one of the most useful and unique features of Windows 8, and although Microsoft will require tablet makers to disclose the lack of Snap, without it, smaller Windows tablets will lack a major selling point over other cheap tablets. The other problem is that if tablet makers start putting out 1024-by-768 Windows tablets, they’ll essentially be competing with last year’s iPad Mini. All signs point to Apple launching a Retina-display iPad Mini later this year, and it’s likely that other tablet makers will bump

Facebook is holding an April 4 event at its Menlo Park campus, promising to show off the company’s “New Home on Android.” TechCrunch’s Josh Constine reports sources as saying “it will be a modified version of the Android operating system with deep native Facebook functionality on the homescreen that may live on an HTC handset.” This wouldn’t be the first phone to get deeper-than-normal Facebook integration. It wouldn’t even be the first HTC phone to do so — the HTC Status had its own Facebook hardware button. Two handsets from the U.K.’s Inq were also positioned as Facebook phones. As Constine points out, Facebook may not be in the right place to work out the hardware details of a company-branded handset: “This announcement might not be a Facebook Phone, but rather a Facebook phone — one where everything the user sees is social by design, even if the handset’s innards are made by someone else.” So potentially another Facebook phone, but perhaps a bit Facebook-ier than previous Facebook phones. And probably not a capital-P Facebook Phone. We’ll know more for sure on Thursday.
How big can Samsung’s Galaxy Note go? Apparently not as huge as we originally expected. Last December, Korea Times reported that the Galaxy Note III would have a 6.3-inch display, citing “officials from local parts suppliers.” Now, the same publication is changing its tune, quoting an anonymous “official” who says the Note III will have a 5.9-inch display instead. Either screen size would be larger than the Galaxy Note II (pictured), whose display measures 5.5-inches diagonally — but that’s to be expected. Samsung is announcing its flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone next week, and all signs point to a 4.99-inch display, which would be about 0.2 inches larger than its predecessor. If the S4 is getting bigger, the Note III is likely to follow, maintaining a decent size gap between the two devices. Still, I winced after reading that the screen might grow to 6.3 inches. At that size, the perennial phone-tablet crossover would veer into tablet territory, and could be tough to stuff into a pants pocket. (That was certainly the case with Huawei’s Ascend Mate, a 6.1-inch “phablet” that I briefly tried at CES in January.) The Note II is big, but it’s not so big that you can’t treat it like a smartphone. And I really liked the Note II. Hopefully Korea Times’ latest report is the correct one, and even if the Note III has a larger screen than its predecessor, perhaps Samsung can minimize the physical footprint by using smaller bezels around the sides and top of the device. We’ll find out more in the second half of the year when Samsung is expected to announce the Note III.

Reuters is reporting that Apple CEO Tim Cook recently met with Jimmy Iovine, famed music producer and Beats CEO, to chat about “a potential partnership involving Beats’ planned music-streaming service.” Iovine’s company is currently working on a service called Project Daisy; Beats acquired streaming music service MOG last July, a move seen as an attempt to augment Beats’ line of headphones and speakers developed by Iovine and rap legend Dr. Dre. Reuters quotes three anonymous sources as saying the meeting was “informational” but the article adds that Apple “has been widely reported to be considering a music-streaming service to complement iTunes, the largest repository of music for sale.” If Apple were to launch a streaming music service, it certainly wouldn’t be the first to do so, but the company’s enormous base of iTunes users and iTunes’ tight integration with Apple’s hardware products would likely help such a service quickly scale to compete with the likes of Spotify and similar competitors. This next bit is pure speculation on my part, so please indulge me. I see a couple of possible scenarios here: If Apple were to launch its own streaming music service that exclusively leveraged whatever Beats is working on, and assuming the service would be priced like other services, we might expect to see a $5-per-month option that featured the ability to stream music to the iTunes desktop software, and a $10-per-month option that featured the ability to download tracks for offline listening and for use on mobile devices. I’d be surprised to see the ability to stream or download tracks to anything other than iTunes or Apple hardware products, however, with the exception of Windows PCs that run the iTunes software. I wouldn’t expect that you’d be able to use this service with non-Apple mobile devices, in other words, and people want to listen to their music while in places other than in front of their computers, believe it or not. Though Apple has a large base of iPhone, iPod and iPad owners, this tactic would still limit the

Unless the press invitations are deliberately misleading (see the photo above), Samsung will announce its Galaxy S4 smartphone in New York on March 14. Aside from a teaser video that says absolutely nothing about the device, Samsung has been predictably tight-lipped. But that hasn’t stopped the rumor mill from chiming in with plenty of unconfirmed details. Below, we’ll try to paint the clearest possible picture of Samsung’s Galaxy S4 based on the last few months of leaks, rumors and speculation. Design Pretty much the entire tech world expects the Galaxy S4 to have a 5-inch, 1080p display, making it Samsung’s largest Galaxy S phone yet. Korean media started reporting on this possibility back in November, and an official roadmap for Samsung Displays leaves even less doubt in our minds. Despite the larger screen, the Galaxy S4 will likely have a design that’s similar to its predecessor. Though we’ve yet to see a credible image of the phone, there’s no shortage of spy shots and alleged press images that hint at a phone with gently-rounded corners and a large physical home button flanked by back and menu buttons. Much like the Galaxy S3, the S4 will likely be built from plastic, according to well-connected blogger Eldar Murtazin. According to SamMobile, the phone will measure 0.3 inches thick, and weigh 0.3 pounds. That would make it roughly 0.04 inches thinner than the S3, but a teeny bit heavier. Tech Specs We’ve already mentioned the possibility of a 5-inch, 1080p display. Other specs for the Galaxy S4 may include a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 2.1-megapixel front camera and 2 GB of RAM, as reported by both SamMobile and HDBlog.it. Storage capacities could start at 16 GB, and go all the way up to 64 GB. The main point of dispute seems to be the processor inside the Galaxy S4. While Samsung’s Exynos 5 octa-core chipset once seemed like a given, SamMobile claims that the new chip is off the table due to overheating issues. One analyst has speculated that the processor may vary by region, with

Fortune is reporting that YouTube will be launching a streaming music service to compete with the likes of Spotify. According to the report: The service has its own negotiating team and operating unit, but will likely have some overlap with new features also rumored to be coming to Google’s Android music platform, Google Play. The two new services are defined by their respective places in the Google empire: Google Play for Android is a digital locker for music—users buy, store, and sort a collection of tracks; but on YouTube’s coming service, anyone can listen to tracks for free. Both services are said to be adding a subscription fee that will unlock additional features. For the YouTube-based service, this will likely mean ad-free access. Fortune was briefed on the service by sources in the record industry and at Google who declined to be named. Through a spokesperson, YouTube issued the following statement: “While we don’t comment on rumor or speculation, there are some content creators that think they would benefit from a subscription revenue stream in addition to ads, so we’re looking at that.” YouTube to launch music streaming service, take on Spotify [Fortune]

Release dates for new Apple products have been tougher to predict lately, with the end of the yearly refresh for new iPads and the ever-shifting launch window of new iPhones. Fortunately, Rene Ritchie at iMore has some unnamed sources who claim to know what’s up: iMore has learned that Apple is planning the release of the iPhone 5S for this summer, currently for August. Next generation iPads, presumably the iPad 5 and potentially the iPad mini 2, may also debut as soon as this April. iMore has a developed a solid track record for Apple rumors, and the timing doesn’t seem too far-fetched for the iPhone, at least. However, even Ritchie seems a bit skeptical about the chances of new iPads next month. Apple just launched its fourth-generation iPad and the iPad Mini in October, and a Retina display for the latter would probably take more time to implement. The iPhone 5S is rumored to have a similar design to the iPhone 5, but with an improved camera and possibly a built-in fingerprint sensor. The next full-sized iPad is expected to be much thinner and lighter than its predecessors, with a design that hews closer to the iPad Mini. iPhone 5S planned for August, next iPads may debut as soon as April [iMore.com]
