BERLIN (AP) — A German privacy watchdog has failed in its bid to stop Facebook from forcing users to register with their real names. Schleswig-Holstein state’s data protection office had argued that the ban on fake names breaches German privacy laws and European rules designed to protect free speech online. But a state appeals court has confirmed a lower tribunal’s ruling that German privacy laws don’t apply to Facebook because the social networking site has its European headquarters in Ireland, where privacy rules are less stringent. Data protection Commissioner Thilo Weichert said in a statement Wednesday that he would accept the ruling, but urged lawmakers to consider changing legislation to harmonize privacy laws across the European Union. Facebook officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

NEW YORK (AP) — Putting a new test to the adage that brevity is the soul of wit, Comedy Central is partnering with Twitter for a comedy festival played out in 140 characters and 6-second videos. The Viacom Inc.-owned network said Sunday that the festival with the hashtag “ComedyFest” will debut April 29. Over five days, comedians will tweet jokes and post videos with the recently launched video app Vine, which limits footage to 6 seconds. The launch of the festival, which Comedy Central is expected to officially announce Monday, was first reported by The New York Times. Kicking off the social media festival will be an event Monday at the Paley Center in Los Angeles featuring Rob Reiner, Judd Apatow and Mel Brooks. So far, Brooks is a Twitter holdout.

The first thing you have to realize about Facebook: nothing you put on there is truly private. Yes, you can control how users see or don’t see your profile. But every time you ‘Like’ a product or even look at a page, the company itself is taking note. This doesn’t mean that someday Facebook will malevolently release your every click to the world. But it’s also not your private diary, and what you do on the website gets collected and cataloged. You should always keep that in mind when you’re using the service. That said, Facebook is a great way to stay in touch and share small and big moments with family, friends and assorted other connections. The key is making sure you’re presenting the most appropriate profile possible to each “Friend.” So let’s go over the various settings you can change to ensure pictures of your wacky jaunt to Vegas don’t end up at the top of your boss’s News Feed. Facebook has retooled its privacy settings time and time again to make them more user friendly, so customizing your settings is a fairly straightforward procedure. It’s an important one, though, since Facebook tends to automatically opt you in to new information sharing unless you go through and manually adjust the settings to the level of transparency you want. Check your current basic privacy settings When you log into Facebook, in the top right hand corner there are two different ways you can assess your privacy settings. If you push the lock icon, you open a drop-down menu that shows “Privacy Shortcuts.” From here, you can make a few key changes to your settings. Who can see your future posts? In this section you can limit exactly who sees your updates. That may be a little too restrictive, but at the very least click on the Custom button in that section and make sure your posts are being posted Publicly (unless you want them to be.) You can also place your Facebook Friends in lists and restrict your posts to those

We all know Cory Booker is America’s “Super Mayor,” a reputation cemented by his many acts of social-media influenced kindness: he’s been lauded for helping a man propose to his girlfriend, letting Hurricane Sandy victims crash at his house and even rescuing a neighbor from a burning building. But did you know that he also helped start a new social media site called #WayWire? Probably not. (READ: TIME’s Full SXSW Coverage) Booker discussed all of these things and more in a wide-ranging chat with TIME.com Assistant Managing Editor Steven James Snyder during a SXSW panel called “Cory Booker: New Media Politician.” The conversation touched on a number of themes, ranging from his worst tweet to his ambitions beyond Newark’s mayorship (more on that soon). When Ashton Met Cory. After a friend prompted Booker to join the social network , he received a unlikely call from a little-known tech entrepreneur named Ashton Kutcher. “I thought I was getting punked.” Corny Cory. Booker confessed that his corny sense of humor (“Remember, ‘corny’ has just one more letter than ‘Cory’”) has gotten him in trouble on more than one occasion. Case in point: his first major social media snafu. After an unnamed governor went public after lying about his whereabouts, Booker tweeted that he, too, was on the Appalachian Trail, with his favorite cup of coffee — a “hot Colombian blend.” Needless to say, there was political fallout. Tweeting To a City — and a Country. Although Booker acknowledged that he has more Twitter followers (1.3 million and counting) than Newark has residents, he thinks it’s an incredible platform to influence a bigger change. “My constituency is technically only 280,000 people, but it’s also the United States. It’s time to wake people up again, and we can do that.” Disrupting Government Through Video. #Waywire, the social network he founded with Google‘s executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, uses video to give users a voice. Booker thinks the medium provides an honest way to capture how people really feel. And better yet, it encourages people to disrupt the system. “Your ability to create video in

We had a good run, TweetDeck. Thanks for the memories. Your ability to show me my Twitter feed and Facebook feed in a single column, combined with the ability to post work-related updates to both Facebook and Twitter at the same time while converting our URLs to custom ti.me Bitly shortlinks on the fly will not be forgotten. You may not have been used the same way by others, but to me, you were perfect. I don’t mind the web-only version of you. The future is in the cloud, after all, and getting rid of your desktop, Android and iPhone apps makes it that much easier for Twitter to update you across the board. When Twitter bought you in May of 2011, some worried that your ability to pull in updates from multiple social networks would wither on the vine. T’was a cold December that same year, as you lost LinkedIn, Foursquare, MySpace and Google Buzz integration. Facebook was all that remained — but it was all that I needed. Let’s make the best of the remaining time we have together. In May, when your Facebook integration draws its final breath and the sound of a million uninstallation procedures rips through the aether in unison, I’ll remember the words of a band that once thought they’d be bigger than the Beatles: I won’t look back in anger.
Twenty-four hours without your smartphone or tablet? Cue Bernard Herrmann’s shrieking Psycho violins for the next 1,440 minutes. Think you could do it? The folks behind the National Day of Unplugging are hoping that, to paraphrase Tim Leary, you can “turn off, tune out and drop by (and see someone).” The party kicks off tonight at sunset, March 1, and rolls through sunset tomorrow, March 2 (or as the site describes it, “sundown to sundown”). During those ostensibly blissful hours of cyber-abstinence, you’re encouraged to “start living a different life: connect with the people in your street, neighborhood and city, have an uninterrupted meal or read a book to your child.” Hey man, everyone’s doing it! Even Arianna Huffington (no really — she’s a few rows down in the site’s promotional picture collage). But okay, what’s this all about really? A bunch of wacky luddites on their anti-technology high horses? Not exactly, though there is a slight religious angle. This “unplug challenge” launched back in 2010 as a riff on the Jewish Sabbath, or Shabbat — the Jewish day of rest, which starts Friday evening and runs through Saturday night. If you attended a parochial elementary school (as I did, though I’m not the least bit religious) and at one point had to read the Old Testament book of Exodus, you may recall the line ”Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest.” The event’s nonprofit sponsor group, Reboot, took that and spun it into more of a tech-angled holiday — as they put it, “an adaption of our ancestors’ ritual of carving out one day per week to unwind, unplug, relax, reflect, get outdoors, and connect with loved ones.” There’s something alluring about unplugging for a day or two when your life looks more and more like a Sharper Image ad. In my house we have three laptops, a desktop PC and flatscreen, two smartphones, one tablet, multiple game consoles and handhelds, a wireless printer, a computer-connected hybrid digital piano, another computer-connected vintage keyboard, an Internet-connected baby-cam, an Internet-connected television

There’s never been a politician quite like Cory Booker — at least in terms of a social media persona. I was a reporter at the Star-Ledger in Newark, New Jersey the day that Mayor Booker took office back in 2006, and I have followed his administration closely ever since. It was in the winter of 2010 when the mayor’s personal twitter feed caught my attention, right around the time he responded to a nearby tweet looking for someone to shovel an elderly resident’s driveway. Seemingly always logged on and eager to help, Booker has won over fans and followers well beyond Newark’s city limits. And his approachable, accessible online persona has hinted at a new era of social governance, where technology allows citizens to interact more directly than ever before with those they have voted into office. It was through Twitter that I approached Mayor Booker about appearing at South By Southwest Interactive 2013, to talk about both this brave new world of the online elected official and his role as co-founder of Waywire, the new social video side for millennial do-gooders. After a few direct messages, Booker accepted the invitation, and South By Southwest announced the timing of the event late last week: Mayor Booker will talk Twitter, Waywire and Newark at 12:30 p.m. March 10. Watch for more coverage right here, on Techland. More details from the SXSW announcement: Few politicians use social media as openly, or prolifically, as Cory Booker. As the mayor of Newark, New Jersey, he has used his personal Twitter feed to interact with constituents on an hourly basis; to follow @CoryBooker is to understand the daily challenge of leading one of America’s largest cities. The mayor is routinely responding to questions and complaints – about issues ranging from potholes to snowdrifts and neighborhood violence. When not personally investigating an issue, he forwards phone numbers and e-mail addresses to his followers, directing residents to various city agencies. He endorses city businesses, shares inspirational quotes, responds directly to tweets of joy or frustration from his

If you find yourself perpetually blowing through the minutes on your cell phone plan and you spend a lot of time talking to people you’re also friends with on Facebook and those same people happen to own iPhones and they’ve got the Facebook Messenger app installed, there’s a solution. Facebook has rolled out free voice calling to other Facebook users via its Messenger app for iOS. Both you and your friend will need to have the app installed for this to work, of course, but assuming that’s been taken care of, you’ll be able to make calls to one another using your phone’s cellular data connection or an available Wi-Fi connection (this should work over Wi-Fi for iPad and iPod Touch owners, too). It’s not technically free if you’re paying for your data plan or broadband connection, but none of your voice minutes will be used in the process. BuzzFeed has a simple step-by-step guide here that details how the calls are initiated. This is not a new trick, mind you. Several other VoIP (voice over internet protocol) services – Skype being the most well-known – can do the same thing, but across platforms (Apple, Android and others) and between different devices. But Facebook has a lot of users, many of whom already use Messenger. And it’s unlikely this feature wouldn’t be rolled out to non-Apple devices sometime in the not too distant future. The free calling feature has reportedly been available to users in Canada for a while and is now beginning to roll out to users in the U.S. as well. Facebook launches free calling for all iPhone users in the US [The Verge]

Facebook held a big press event this morning. The company only sent out invitations last week, and when it did, it didn’t disclose the topic. But in a sense, everyone who pays close attention to Facebook has been waiting for this event for most of the site’s history — because the subject was Graph Search, the social network’s first truly serious search feature. Like other great big Facebook-altering features like Timeline, Graph Search isn’t being unleashed in one fell swoop. It’s a beta for now, and only a minuscule percentage of users will get it immediately. (Everyone else can get on the waitlist at facebook.com/graphsearch.) Still, its arrival in even limited form is an important moment. Graph Search lets you enter plain-English concepts that tie together multiple things the social network knows about the people who use it: where they live, where they work, where they’ve taken photos and what things they’ve liked. Among the searches Facebook provides as examples are “people who like tennis and live nearby,” “tourist attractions in Italy visited by my friends,” “movies liked by people who are film directors” and “friends of friends who have been to Yosemite National Park.” The results aren’t Google-style links to external sites — they’re Facebook pages for the people, places and other things that match the query. In theory, at least, this new way to find information is both faster and far more personal than a conventional search engine. The notion that we might end up doing most of our interacting with Facebook by searching rather than browsing seems entirely plausible. At the press event, Facebook did try to keep everyone’s expectations in check. CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent much of his presentation emphasizing what Graph Search isn’t. He kept saying that it’s not the same thing as “Web search” (or, as most of us tend to call it, Google). More important, it isn’t a fully fleshed-out idea. This first version helps you find people, photos, interests and places, but there’s lots of stuff on Facebook it doesn’t know about

“Can I beam you up for a conversation?” That is one of the “flirts” you can send to clingy Klingons on Trekkie Dating, a new dating website for Star Trek fans who wish to “live love and prosper.” Now there’s no need to wait until the official Star Trek conventions to meet your match. It’s free to sign up on trekkiedating.com, make a profile, browse, upload photos, and send “flirty” messages to other singles (the site has a list of both generic and Star Trek-themed flirts). But to send longer messages, you must upgrade to a premium membership, which costs $25. Gregory Anders and Frank Farkas, who work at the site’s parent company Online Connections, shared the best Star Trek lines that users have written to describe themselves: “Nothing seduces me like a man who speaks Vulcan” “Let’s talk over a cup of Raktajino” [Klingon coffee] “Looking for a nerd to call my own” “Searching the galaxy for my Lt. Commander Data” [an android who got around] “Greetings Earthlings” “Lovin’ you makes me feel…logical” “Flirts” (pickup lines) that singles can send one another include: “You must have been shot with a phaser set to stunning!” [the main weapon in the show] “Tell me of this thing you humans call (pause) love.” “Can I tribble you for a chat?” [tribbles are small, furry creatures] “Logic tells me we have a lot in common!” Anders and Farkas said soon users will be able to select their “race,” for there are so many different alien races in the Star Trek universe. Online Connections runs similar niche dating sites for cowboys, bikers, cat lovers, “local goths,” and people who have tattoos (“Ink Dating”).
