Let’s get this out of the way: Google Play Music All Access is a terrible name, rolling off the tongue like a mouthful of marbles. I’m not sure what Google was thinking here, adopting such a clunky moniker for a fledgling streaming music service whose media-decreed rivals go by punchier handles like Pandora, Spotify, Rdio and Grooveshark. Why not something simpler like Google Music, leaving “All Access” to describe one of the subscription tiers? Even the name Google Play sounds catchier and more appropriate for something that dishes up tunes, but then Google already uses those two words (somewhat incongruously) to describe its entire digital distribution platform, from Android apps, devices and games to books, magazines and music. Google Play Music All Access it is then, and I’ll henceforth be referring to it as GPMAA for sanity’s sake (or, as I’ve been pronouncing it out loud, “gup-mah”). Google unveiled GPMAA yesterday at its annual I/O conference during an over three-hour developer-focused keynote, though of that time, the company only devoted a few minutes to touch on the service’s basic features. As suspected, GPMAA represents Google’s attempt to offer a subscription-based music service, streaming “millions” of songs — intermingled with up to 20,000 more, uploadable or song-matched from your personal library — for $10 a month ($8 a month if you sign up by the end of June). Chris Yerga, Google’s engineering director who steered this part of the keynote, explained that GPMAA would include common music streaming features like curated playlists, album recommendations and a build-your-own-radio-station feature. In other words, GPMAA isn’t a wildly new product so much as another limb stitched into an existing framework. Google hopped into the music game in late 2011 with Google Music (later, Google Play Music), the company’s answer to Apple’s iTunes music store, the twist being that you could also upload up to 20,000 of your own songs and stream all of that to multiple Android devices. The service never really took off, though, and no surprise: Given the choice between having to curate your own music library (where you’re

In a world of totally free lossless music CD encoding tools and more than ample, high-speed external storage, paying to outsource the transfiguration of your physical music library may sound a little backwards. But media marketplace Murfie, which can turn your CD library into an online media wellspring and source of cash to buy additional tunes from an online store, aims to be more than just a stopgap for digital neophytes with troves of unripped discs. In the second part of my interview with Murfie CEO Matt Younkle (you can read part one here), we cover the service’s encoding specifics for audiophiles, questions of legal ownership in a digital-only world and the threat from subscription-based streaming giants like Spotify. You’d think that in 2013, services like iTunes and Amazon would have at least shifted fully to lossless audio downloads, and yet virtually no one sells or streams lossless quality digital music at this point. That was my main thing that pulled me into Murfie. I was still picking up CDs, and so I’d buy them, then rip them and I’d wind up with this piece of plastic, and it was great because I owned it, but it wasn’t about the plastic for me, it was about knowing that I had the bit-for-bit version of the studio recording. I think it was Peter Gabriel who was talking about this at some point after his album Up came out, where he said the greatest challenge facing musicians today is that they have far less control nowadays over the type of listening experience someone’s going to have because you can’t predict how someone’s going to rip something. I’ve used stuff like Exact Audio Copy or XLD over the years, I turn on all the secure rip settings, check against AccurateRip, do a test rip before each actual rip to guarantee it’s a perfect rip and so forth. How does Murfie’s extraction process work? How do Murfie subscribers know you’ve done a perfect rip? We use dbPowerAmp and we rely after our first pass

What’s in your entertainment center? Stacks of scuffed polystyrene jewel cases? Haphazard piles of lightly scratched CDs? What about your closet? A trove of yesteryear media? A bookshelf’s worth of jumbo nylon-mesh storage cases harboring hundreds of discs and wrinkled liner notes? The last time you visited a used record shop Star Trek: The Next Generation was probably still airing new episodes. Now everything you listen to lives on iTunes and Amazon or Spotify, Pandora and Rdio. When Elvis belts “Lord almighty, I feel my temperature rising,” he’s piped off a capacious mini-slab of solid state memory instead of through a laser gliding over a whirling polycarbonate circle. Nowadays you just summon a groove by speaking into your phone like Jean-Luc Picard asking the Enterprise for a little Ravel or Debussy. You are the next generation. (MORE: Mostly Piano, Not Pretender: Yamaha’s AvantGrand N2 a Year Later) So what do you do with all that old media clutter? Donate it? Backfill the coffee cup coaster collection? Escort it to the local dumpster? What if you could make it someone else’s problem, say someone who’d convert it over to lossless audio data accessible from any web browser — data that doubled as credit toward buying or trading new music online? Enter Murfie, an eclectic “online social media marketplace” that’ll let you do exactly that, and a concept CEO Matt Younkle refers to as “the ultimate online corner record store.” Think of it as iTunes meets Championship Vinyl: a vehicle for music aficionados looking to bridge their physical and digital worlds while maintaining control over how that relationship works. “We set out to build a place you could buy, sell and trade your music with other people,” says Younkle of Murfie’s inception in May 2011. “But it’s different in that we enable you to stream and download what you buy.” Online music stores are a dime a dozen, so Murfie’s grounded itself firmly in the physical side of music media. “It’s how I got started with Murfie,” explains Younkle. “I had this

I went into this piece with the assumption that Spotify needs a family subscription option — a way to add other household family members to a Spotify Premium account without paying the full $10 a month extra the company currently charges everyone. In my family of two actively listening adults (our child is less than a year old), both my wife and I use Spotify on our computers and smartphones. Since we’ve chosen to share a single account, she has to sign in with my info. When she’s listening, I can’t, and vice versa (whoever’s clicked “play” last knocks the other off). I’ve recently come up with a workaround William Golding could get behind: She gets to hold the conch, I get to hold…well, an external hard drive loaded with my own music. It gets the job done until I need to go for a run, or run an errand, at which point I’m back to curating tracks from my library to play on my space-limited smartphone. A family option would be helpful here, say $5 for each additional account, or just a lump monthly sum for a given number of simultaneous streams. Microsoft offers something like the latter with its Xbox LIVE game service, for instance, selling four memberships in a “family pack“ for the price of two. And music streamer Rdio, which, like Spotify, also charges $10 a month for unlimited streaming, already offers family options: $18 a month for two accounts or $23 a month for three. Earlier this year, Spotify chief content officer Ken Parks reportedly told The Verge that family plans were “definitely coming.” Great! Except that’s all he said — no timeframe. We’ve heard nothing since. Which, since we’re closing out 2012, had me well and ready to scribble a piece titled something like “Get the lead out, Spotify!” And then I read this streaming music royalties breakout piece at Pitchfork by Galaxie 500 and Damon and Naomi drummer Damon Krukowski. In it, Krukowski lays out how royalty payments through services like Pandora and Spotify work, each service

Redbox and Verizon’s streaming video service reportedly won’t have as many movies and shows as Netflix, but it may be $2 per month cheaper. The so-called “Redbox Instant by Verizon” will cost $6 per month according to GigaOM’s Janko Roettgers, who discovered the details by looking through publicly available support documents. (The web pages in question now require a password to see.) Like Netflix, the service will provide unlimited video streaming, but will also have some other optional perks. Subscribers can pay an extra $2 per month for four nights of DVD rentals through Redbox kiosks. (Rentals usually cost $1.20 per night.) The service will also offer on-demand rentals of newer movies, starting at $0.99, with offline access to those videos available on some devices. At launch, the Redbox and Verizon service will be available on web browsers, iOS and Android devices, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and select TVs and Blu-ray players from Samsung, GigaOM reports. Despite Verizon’s involvement, anyone will be able to sign up, not just Verizon TV and Internet subscribers. Granted, the service is in closed beta now, and final pricing could change, but if those details prove accurate, Redbox Instant by Verizon would be the cheapest alternative to Netflix yet. On a yearly basis, it’d be $24 less expensive than Netflix. It would also be $9 per year less expensive than Amazon Prime, whose other perks include free two-day shipping on store orders and a free e-book catalog for Kindle devices. Still, the service wouldn’t quite be the same as those rivals in terms of selection. Paul Davis, CEO of Redbox operator Coinstar, told Fast Company last August that it wants to have a smaller, but better selection of movies than Netflix. Also, he suggested that the focus will be more on movies than television. The one thing that’s always worried me about the service is that it might play things safe so as not to endanger Verizon’s existing FiOS TV and on-demand video services. Netflix, meanwhile, can keep pursuing newer and better content without fear of cord cutting
