If you’re online—and reading this!—you’ve probably heard of Twitter. But just what is Twitter for? How does it work? And how do you get started using it? Whether you want to start using Twitter yourself or just want to know what it is, we’ll help untangle the mysteries of this social networking site. Just what is Twitter? On Twitter, you’ll find friends and family as well as celebrities, companies and strangers who may share your interests. News networks (like @AP and @CNN) will post breaking news announcements, companies may hold giveaways, celebrities post announcements on what they’re working on and everyone has conversations. Like any social network, what you get out of Twitter is based on who you follow on the site, and you can follow anyone else using Twitter (so long as their account isn’t private). Think of Twitter as a big, open room—with all of Twitter’s 200 million active users chatting away inside fromall over the world. You can roam around and listen to what everyone’s talking about or just chat with a small group of your friends. Twitter is considered a micro-blogging service, which means the posts made to Twitter have to be an extremely brief, 140 characters or less. Unlike Facebook, which has lots of options that allow you to keep your information private, Twitter is a predominately public space. Though you can make your Twitter account private, meaning only people you approve can see your messages, you only have two options—to be completely public or completely private. You may not think 140 characters is very much to get something across, but these brief messages are perfect for sharing small updates, little bites of everyday life. And while each message is short, you may find yourself replying to other people—and them replying to you—which turns a single short message into a longer conversation. Twitter also lets you easily share links, photos, and videos, which you can post for your friends—or everyone— to see with or without comment. Twitter terminology Elizabeth Harper / Techlicious Twitter isn’t exactly a foreign

I have a Facebook friend who constantly is firing off preachy religious or contentious political posts that are clogging up my social stream with stuff I don’t care to read. At the same time, the guy is the dad of one of my son’s best friends and I have to see him on the sidelines of school sporting events, so the last thing I want to do is offend him. If this scenario sounds familiar, take heart. There are ways to rid your Facebook News Feed of annoying posts. First, you can unfriend the person—Facebook will not notify the person you have done so. Of course, if the person starts to wonder why he or she is no longer seeing your posts and searches for you, your former connection will find your profile page and see an “Add friend” box on the top of it, a dead giveaway pointing toward what you’ve done. Facebook As an alternative, you can tell Facebook to show you fewer posts from a particular person. To do it, click on the little drop-down arrow on the top of something he or she has posted, then choose “Hide.” Facebook then tells you it has hidden the story from your News Feed and gives you the option to “Change what updates you get from (so and so)” or “Organize who you see in news feed.” If you click on the former, you can uncheck—and tell Facebook you don’t want to receive certain kinds of information about this person—things like life events, status updates, photos, games, comments and likes, music and videos and other activity, essentially everything a person is doing on Facebook. There’s also an option to simply unfollow a person. Facebook If you opt to organize your News Feed, you can put people on an acquaintances list so that their posts show up less frequently there as well as get the ability to share things with friends but not acquaintances. Again, nobody will know you’ve put them on this list. But what about the people who you really care about—the

Computers house so much of our personal data that it’s essential to set up protective measures in case of cyber attack or mechanical failure. These five must-do steps dramatically increase the odds your computer (and your privacy) will remain safe from the latest online criminal activity and let you salvage your most important files if your computer becomes irretrievably infected. 1. Updates are not optional Updating the software on your system, including the operating system, is an absolute necessity. If you don’t download new versions of programs like Adobe Flash, your computer is more susceptible to malware. Updates to your Windows or Mac operating system help address new threats. To keep your Windows system up to date, you can use Windows Update to make sure you’re getting the necessary adjustments. This is usually set to update automatically, but here’s how can check to make sure. In Windows 7, click the Start button, type “windows update” into the search box. Click on Windows Update in the results (it will be under the Program section of the results.) Click on “Change Settings” in the Windows Update window that pops up and then check to see that the Install Updates Automatically option has been selected under Important Updates section. Then choose OK to save your changes. In Windows 8, open the Search charm, enter “turn automatic updating on or off” and then click Settings. Microsoft issues new updates every second Tuesday of the month. Mac OS X checks automatically for updates weekly if it has an internet connection. If it finds updates, will it use a pop up window listing the changes and asking you if you are ready to install them (which often requires a computer restart). 2. Uninstall Java Java is a program that websites used to incorporate into their systems, but is rarely used now. Continuous security holes allowing malware to infect computers through Java makes it no longer safe to leave it on your system unless you absolutely need it. Even the Department of Homeland Security has recommended removing Java from your computer or, at

There might’ve been a time when you weren’t overly worried about your mobile devices getting infected by malware – after all, viruses and spyware were a threat mostly to computers. But as smartphones and tablets become increasingly popular, so do threats that target mobile devices exclusively. According to a 2013 report by Web security provider Blue Coat Systems, an increasing amount of malware is making the jump from desktops to mobile. Security company McAfee also warned in February (PDF) that it detected over 36,000 malware threats, most of that number targeting Android devices. Though it’s not just Android. If you have a mobile device, you need to know how malware is targeting it and what you can do about it. If malware sneaks on to your phone or tablet, it can install adware, activate SMS Trojans that send out expensive text messages from your phone without you knowing, and even let othersspy on your emails, texts and web browsing. How malware infects your mobile devices The most common way malware infects a phone or a tablet is through downloaded apps masquerading as a popular title or as a useful utility program. You’d think you wouldn’t fall victim to that if you’re careful, but some malicious programs are very well disguised as legitimate apps. In 2012, for instance, fake Angry Birds and Assassin’s Creed apps hit Google Play, and many Android users unknowingly downloaded the malicious programs that charged them a premium rate – roughly $22 – for each app. That modus operandi, however, might soon change. Security researcher Chris Astacio warns that it’s very likely for attackers to start tweaking mobile malware to infect devices via web pages instead of through apps. At a presentation at the RSA Security conference in San Francisco in late February, he revealed that software that exploits vulnerabilities on computers has been starting to look out for web hits made by iPhones, iPads and Android devices. Which indicates that, although it’s not yet an actual threat, this method might be used to attack mobile devices in the future. Abundance of Android

I signed up for a Hotmail email address when I first got access to the Internet about 15 years ago. It wasn’t a great service, but it worked. I gave up on it after a while – Gmail was better, after all – but I still logged in every now and then just to make sure old contacts weren’t trying to reach me. And now Hotmail.com has officially ceased operations. The site now redirects to fellow Microsoft email site Outlook.com. All Hotmail emails and contacts still exist; they’ve just been transferred to a different place. A much more powerful, user-friendly place, or so the TV commercials for Outlook claim. You’ve probably seen those commercials, right? The ones set to the Mackelmore and Ryan song where busy people take an inbox full of unread messages and, with the press of just one or two buttons, achieve the magical goal of “inbox zero.” It all looks great on the television screen, but is the new Outlook really that terrific? In short: Not quite. But Outlook does offer huge advantages over the old Hotmail. It even does a couple of things better than Gmail. Let’s take a look. Interface The new Outlook design is great – far superior to the outdated feel of Hotmail. The screen isn’t cluttered with nonsense. It’s simple, clean, and easy to use, not unlike Gmail. At the left hand of the screen, you’ll notice your Folders and Quick Views. Folders work much the same way they do on Gmail. Quick Views automatically classifies your emails in categories based on their contents, such as Documents, Photos, and Shipping Updates. It’s a good way to provide quick access to the important stuff you anxiously check your email for. At the top of the screen is a blue menu bar. That’s where all the good stuff happens, so to speak. When you click an email, that’s where the familiar Reply, Delete, and Move to commands appear. You’ll find your contacts (called People) hiding under the Outlook logo in the top left-hand corner of the

Ah, finally. If you use both Gmail and Google Calendar for your e-mail and planning needs, respectively, you can now create calendar events from directly within Gmail messages. According to Google’s Gmail blog: Starting today, dates and times within emails are lightly underlined: click them to schedule that conference call or lunch date without ever leaving Gmail. When you click on one of these underlined dates, you’ll be able to preview your schedule for the day and change the title, date or time of the event. Clicking “Add to Calendar” will do exactly that — add the event to your calendar, and for extra convenience, the calendar event will include a link back to the original email. Here’s what it looks like in action: Google The fact that each calendar event created this way links back to its corresponding e-mail message is icing on the cake — especially if you have a tendency to stare blankly at stuff on your calendar, wondering why you scheduled a particular event, who’s going to be there and what the subject matter is supposed to be. I dunno, maybe I should see a doctor about this. If you don’t notice this feature in your Gmail yet, don’t worry. Google says, “This new feature is rolling out over the next week to everyone with the English (US) language. We’ll be adding other languages soon, so stay tuned.” Add events to Google Calendar from Gmail [Google]

If you own an iPhone, there’s a very good chance you run into battery problems now and again—times when you wish you had the battery life to take one more photo, look up the location of a restaurant or make a quick phone call. But the more we use and rely on our smartphones, the more likely they are to run out of juice when we need them most. However, with a bit of awareness of how you use your iPhone—and what apps you’re using on it—you can curb your iPhone’s battery hogging tendency. We’ll take a look at what types of apps commonly drain your battery power and look into the ways you can keep your iPhone juiced up. What’s always running? The biggest battery drain by far will be the apps that you’re always using. Do you keep Facebook open on your iPhone and check it regularly? Do you have AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) open on your phone to talk to friends on the go? Or Pandora streaming music in the background? Some of these apps will even keep running in the background, burning battery life even when you aren’t paying any attention to them. Looking at our examples, Facebook will actively notify you of new updates or messages, AIM is constantly checking to see if your friends are on or offline and streaming apps like Netflix, Hulu, Pandora or Spotify will keep streaming until you tell them to stop. And as long as these apps are active and doing things, they’re burning through your battery life. In addition to your favorite apps, you need to be wary of apps that keep your screen active (though you might not think about it, it takes a lot of energy to keep your phone’s screen lit up) or put a strain on your smartphone’s internal processor. Beyond the video streaming apps we’ve already mentioned, be on the watch out for games: they might be fun, but they’ll cut sharply into your battery life! Video and photo editing apps like iMovie and iPhoto also take a

Thinking about letting your child or teen borrow your iPad or giving them your hand me down iPhone? Just like with a PC, your big concern is probably keeping them away from inappropriate content. But an Apple product is a great choice because of their solid parental controls and the company’s strong stance against pornography—Steve Jobs once suggested that the company had a “moral responsibility to keep porn off the iPhone.” We’ll walk you through where your youngster might be able to find inappropriate content on an Apple iOS device, as well as the tools Apple provides to keep them out of it. Where do I have to watch out for adult content? Apple’s app store is carefully curated: Apple approves every app that goes live to make sure it meets their standards, and even Playboy Magazine’s iOS app doesn’t feature any nudity. Each app also features an age rating prominently displayed under the app name, listing who the app is appropriate for: ages 4+, 9+, 12+, or 17+. Of course your definition of what’s appropriate may not match Apple’s, so you’ll still want to review any apps for content, but this at least gives you a guideline. However, Apple’s stores for books, music, movies and television are far less policed, offering an open market of commercially available content. You can find anything here that you might find on the shelves of a store, including R-rated movies and songs with mature lyrics. Where you have to be most wary, however, is the Internet. Both the iPhone and iPad have access to the Internet, and a world of content is open from a web browser or YouTube search—not all of it appropriate for young audiences. So what can I do about adult content? iPhone content controls Having a secure password for the iTunes account the iPhone or iPad uses—one your child doesn’t know and won’t guess—will prevent them from installing paid apps, purchasing movies or music, or making in-app purchases. However, bear in mind that if you’ve entered the password to buy something, there’s a 15 minute window

If you have a bookworm in your family, e-books can be an expensive habit. Fortunately, there are great places to find free versions of many popular titles. Some are available to keep; others you can borrow. Find free e-books on Amazon There’s a fairly large collection of public domain and other free works available on Amazon, including The Ugly Duckling, Bobbsey Twins in the Country and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. But finding free titles isn’t easy, so you’ll want to head over to a book-finder site like Freebook Sifter, which has more than 600 children’s e-books cataloged Titles are broken down by age and type and are listed with the average Amazon rating. FreeReadFeed provides a similar service, with the ability to sort by Children’s and Teens. Neither site has a complete list, but they’re both great places to start. If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you can borrow one book a month for free from Amazon. There are books for young children, like Dora’s Sleepover and Goodnight, Little Monster, as well as for tweens and teens who are ready for books like the Harry Potter series and The Hunger Games. While not free, those with a new Kindle Fire can subscribe to Amazon’s Kindle FreeTime Unlimited, which provides access to more than 1,000 books suited to kids ages 3-8. It’s bargain-priced at $4.99 per month, or $2.99, if you’re an Amazon Prime member, and includes access to free videos and apps. Get free e-books from Barnes & Noble The easiest way to find free kids books for the Barnes & Noble Nook is to go to the Kids section and search for “free.” This will pull up more than 4,000 titles. The selection is heavily weighted to tweens and teens, but there are some titles for younger children, including one of my favorites, The Elephant’s Child. Check out e-books from the library You can check out e-books from your local library with your library card just like you can physical books. Some libraries offer e-books directly, but most use a service called OverDrive. To find out if your local library participates, just plug in your ZIP code. Even if

If you’ve just purchased an Android phone, congratulations. By going Android, you’ve opted for raw functionality over simplicity, for customization over absolute user-friendliness. Android is a powerful platform, but only for those who take full advantage of all its tricks. To help get you started, here’s a guide to tricking out your Android phone, whether you just bought a Samsung Galaxy S 4, HTC One or a budget Android handset from your local prepaid carrier: 1. Get Some Widgets, Organize Your Home Screen Widgets are an easy to way to put information and quick commands front-and-center on your phone. Here’s my most recent list of favorites, and here’s another list for good measure. On most newer phones, you can add widgets by going to the main app launcher, then swiping over to the widgets section. Some phones let you add widgets by holding your finger down on a blank part of the home screen. Once you’ve got a solid collection, try to organize them in a logical way. For example, my main screen has just the weather, favorite apps and a fast way to reach my wife (more on that next). Then I have one screen for quick actions like note-taking, bookmarks and navigation shortcuts, one for news and information and another for phone settings. 2. Give Yourself a Spouse/Significant Other/BFF Button I want to give special attention to Android’s built-in 1-by-1 Contact widget (or the “wife button,” as I call it), which serves as a command center for talking to that special someone in your life. Add it to your home screen, and with two taps you’ll be able to call, send a text message or write an e-mail. (Update: Some HTC phones, such as the HTC One, only include a 4-by-4 Contact widget. But there is another way: Press and hold down on your home screen, and you should see a drop-down list with “Widgets” as the default option. Change this to “Shortcuts,” then select “Person,” and select the contact you want to add.) 3. Set Up Google Play to

Searching the web for information is a skill. Yes, you can enter a term into a search engine and find information, but that’s the blunt force method. By using a few simple tricks, the scalpel method, you can quickly and easily whittle down your results to get exactly the information you’re looking for. And if you’re helping your child with search, be sure to turn on safe search as part of your routine for keeping your kids safe online. For Bing and Google, you can find it under the settings button, the cog icon in the upper right corner. Google also has a check-box option to let you lock on SafeSearch. Here are my favorite ways of approaching search. Finding new stories In general, putting a year or date in your search term will help limit results to more recent entries and all search engines will surface the most relevant stories based on date. However if you want to limit your results, Bing will let you select results from past 24 hours, past week or past month (Click on the Any time button). Google also lets you search by the past hour, past year or create a custom date range (You’ll see this option when you click on Search Tools). Finding archived stories If a website has ceased publication or a story is taken down, it is often possible to retrieve information using the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. On the site, enter the web address and timeframe and you can browse that website as though it were 2001, for instance. Searching for a specific phrase When you’re looking for search results for a specific phrase, put your search term in quotes. For example: “Internet privacy.” Searching a specific site Most websites have their own search function, but it’s often not as good as Google or Bing. To limit results to a particular site, you can add “site:” and then the Web address of the site. For example: “Internet privacy” site: techlicious.com. To exclude a site, put a minus sign before the word

When buying a smartphone, there are dozens of different factors to consider, especially if you’re trying to decide between a few popular phones that seem like essentially the same thing, just with different packaging. Looked at a list of specs lately? Quad-core, 2GB RAM, 13 megapixels, 4.7/4.8/5.0/5.5 inches, LTE, NFC, and other three letter words. What sets one phone apart from another? If recent launches are any indication, smartphones are due to have longer and longer lists of features to differentiate themselves from the competition. Good features can make or break a smartphone, but not all features are worth your time and they definitely should not influence your buying decision. Here are the most egregious offenders. 1. More megapixels Two years ago the fanciest smartphones boasted 5 megapixel cameras. Last year’s number? 8MP. Now the 13MP phones are coming and aren’t you impressed? You shouldn’t be. We went through this same scenario over in the camera world and the problem is the same here. More megapixels does not equal a better camera or better pictures. The iPhone 4 [iPhone 4S] had a 5MP camera that put many 8MP Android phones to shame. The Galaxy S III and the HTC One X both had 8MP cameras, but HTC took superior pictures. Specs alone aren’t going to tell the whole story. What makes a good smartphone camera is a combination of a quality sensor and a good camera app that tweaks things behind the scenes to give you the best shot possible. 2. Camera features that don’t improve picture (or video) quality A wealth of settings in the camera app is a definite plus, but some smartphone makers are going overboard with image and video features that aren’t necessary and don’t make images look any better. Recent examples include HTC’s Zoe (introduced with the new HTC One) which takes multiple pictures plus a few second video every time you press the shutter button andthe dual camera recording feature found on the LG Optimus G Pro and the Galaxy S4. Even the highly touted 1080p video recording isn’t impressive if you’re not going to

If you’re in the market for a new tablet, the good news is that there’s a tablet for everyone, regardless of needs and budgets. The bad news is that with everyone trying to tell you their tablet is the best, finding the right tablet for you can be tricky. So before we start talking specific products, here’s what you need to consider to make a smart buying decision. Apple How large (or small) of a tablet do you need? Tablet size is typically measured by the distance from corner to corner, diagonally, in inches. Most tablets have either a 7″ screen or a 10″ screen, though Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD falls in the middle with an 8.9″ screen. So which one is right for you? While all tablets are portable, smaller tablets are the lightest and most portable of the lot, sized to fit in a large pocket or small purse, making them great companions for anyone on the go. They’re also easier to hold in one hand (like a paperback book), which makes them a great option if you’re frequently going to use your tablet for reading. And best of all? 7″ tablets cost less than their 10″ brethren, making them the perfect option for budget shoppers. Larger 10″ tablets are the powerhouses of the tablet world, with the ability to do just about anything you might want. Their high-resolution screens makes them especially good for watching TV or movies as well as editing your own photos or video. Gamers, too, will appreciate the extra screen size and processing power a larger tablet has. And business users, who might find 7″ tablets a bit cramped for reading email or managing spreadsheets, will also appreciate that larger tablets are more likely to have access to 4G or LTE cellular networks instead of just relying on Wi-Fi. Of course all of these extra features add to the cost—though you can still find 10″ tablets at reasonable prices if you shop around. Just how much storage space do you need? The amount

Google recently introduced Keep, a note-taking service you can use to organize things you need to remember—notes to yourself, to-do or grocery lists, photos of receipts, a wine label or whiteboard and anything else that makes sense to keep on file. It’s a fantastic idea, although not a new one. Evernote, with its elephant logo and tagline “Remember everything” has dominated the space for the last several years and Microsoft’s OneNote application is a favorite with many. Which one should you use? The three are alike in many ways—all of them offer free versions, both desktop and mobile access and let you share notes with others. But deeper in, they each offer features that might be better for certain types of people, depending on which ecosystem you’re already invested in. Here’s how the three services stack up when compared side by side. Evernote While Evernote might not be Google or Microsoft, it’s a beautifully useful and exceedingly popular product. Features: Web Clipper browser extension sends entire webpages or selective content from a website to your Evernote account Text in photos of signs, labels or handwritten notes are searchable, even in the free version (as opposed to PDF search, which is a paid feature) Multishot camera lets you capture a series of photos in one note Integration with screen capture app Skitch (for iOS, Android, Windows, Mac). Lets you annotate photo notes Tags let you easily find categories of notes Connect your Twitter account and send tweets directly to your Evernote account Smartphone Access: Evernote is available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BlackBerry devices and as a downloadable desktop app. Price: Evernote is available for free. Upgraded service for $5/month or $45/year gets you offline notes, PIN lock, larger uploads, search for text within PDFs, others can edit notebooks and more. Google Keep Google Keep has a uniquely simple interface. And if you’re a heavy Google user, you’ll appreciate how easy it is to get going using your Gmail login credentials and how it marries well with Google Drive. On the downside, there currently isn’t any way to print your notes. Features: Transcribes voice memos Choose

T-Mobile is now taking pre-orders on the iPhone 5, and hoping to lure people over from larger carriers with the promise of cheap wireless service. While there’s no shortage of articles and charts comparing T-Mobile’s new plans to other carriers, I’ve come to realize that it’s hard to make those comparisons in a general way. Every user is different, so doing the math based on hypothetical situations might not help you. So rather than trying to figure out whether the T-Mobile iPhone is a good deal for you, I’ve put together some steps to figuring it out on your own. Teach a man to fish, and all that: Start with the base cost of T-Mobile service. For individuals, that’s $50 per month for 500 MB, $60 per month for 2 GB and $70 per month for unlimited data. All plans include unlimited voice and text, and there are no overage fees if you go over your data limit–just slower speeds. Families: For a second line, add another $30 per month for 500-MB plans, $40 for 2 GB, and $50 for unlimited data. For each line after that (up to five lines total), add another $10 per month for 500 MB, $20 for 2 GB and $30 for unlimited data. Add another $20 per month, per iPhone, which goes toward paying off the device in monthly installments over two years. Compare the total to your current monthly wireless bill. Now you know how T-Mobile compares with your current carrier for the first two years of service. After two years, your bill on T-Mobile will be $20 per month cheaper, at least until you buy a new phone. But you should also consider that the up-front cost of the iPhone is $100 cheaper on T-Mobile than it is everywhere else. This can make a big difference on the total, two-year cost of ownership, especially for families with multiple iPhones. Therefore: Multiply your current monthly bill by 24. Do the same for what your monthly bill would be on T-Mobile. Add $200 per

The first thing you have to realize about Facebook: nothing you put on there is truly private. Yes, you can control how users see or don’t see your profile. But every time you ‘Like’ a product or even look at a page, the company itself is taking note. This doesn’t mean that someday Facebook will malevolently release your every click to the world. But it’s also not your private diary, and what you do on the website gets collected and cataloged. You should always keep that in mind when you’re using the service. That said, Facebook is a great way to stay in touch and share small and big moments with family, friends and assorted other connections. The key is making sure you’re presenting the most appropriate profile possible to each “Friend.” So let’s go over the various settings you can change to ensure pictures of your wacky jaunt to Vegas don’t end up at the top of your boss’s News Feed. Facebook has retooled its privacy settings time and time again to make them more user friendly, so customizing your settings is a fairly straightforward procedure. It’s an important one, though, since Facebook tends to automatically opt you in to new information sharing unless you go through and manually adjust the settings to the level of transparency you want. Check your current basic privacy settings When you log into Facebook, in the top right hand corner there are two different ways you can assess your privacy settings. If you push the lock icon, you open a drop-down menu that shows “Privacy Shortcuts.” From here, you can make a few key changes to your settings. Who can see your future posts? In this section you can limit exactly who sees your updates. That may be a little too restrictive, but at the very least click on the Custom button in that section and make sure your posts are being posted Publicly (unless you want them to be.) You can also place your Facebook Friends in lists and restrict your posts to those

Every year smartphone cameras get better and better, which makes buying a standalone camera seem like less and less of a necessity, even for people who love taking pictures. Yet even the best camera phones (the HTC Droid DNA, for instance) are still limited in important ways. If you want to take pictures that you can print at large sizes without looking grainy or you want to work in low or harsh lighting situations, you need at least a quality point-and-shoot. On the other end, there are those who are out for great pictures who might want to go further with their photography skills but don’t have the money for a digital SLR. You don’t have to spend your entire savings on a camera to get high quality or the ability to change lenses. In this buying guide we’ll help you understand which options and features are most important for what you want to accomplish and offer suggestions ranging from budget all the way up to high-end models for enthusiasts. Our Picks: Point-and-Shoot & Compact Cameras Prices valid as of 3/24/2013 Budget Cameras: Under $100 Budget point-and-shoots are a step up from smartphone cameras for not a lot of money. However, at this price point don’t expect to find a slew of features or many models that offer manual control. Key features to look for are optical zoom and stabilization, fast shutter speeds, HD video recording and compact bodies. Olympus Editor’s Choice: Olympus VR-340 A stand out among budget cameras, the MP VR-340 boasts a metal body and a higher optical zoom than most in this price range. It takes reasonably sharp and color-rich images and 720p HD video both up close (with Macro mode) and far away, thanks to the 10x zoom and image stabilization. Intelligent Auto mode offers the best settings for those who don’t know their ISO from aperture and Program mode gives those who know what they’re doing deeper control. Once the battery runs down, you can charge it from your computer. The VR-340 is not the fastest

T-Mobile has made a bold step by getting rid of two-year contracts. It’s actually not quite that simple – especially if you want an inexpensive phone – but there are savings to be found nonetheless. Here’s the skinny. The plans are affordable, considering what you get. Fifty bucks a month will get you unlimited minutes, unlimited text messages and 500 megabytes of data. Ten bucks more gets you an additional two gigabytes of data; ten bucks more than that gets you unlimited data. Family plans start at $80 per month for two phones and top out at $210 per month for five lines and unlimited data. All plans include unlimited text messages and the ability to use your phone as a data hotspot for your other devices, which are nice perks. Such features can cost extra on competing networks. There are no data overages, but there’s a catch. Let’s say you opt for the $50-per-month plan to try to save some money, but you blow through your 500-megabyte data allotment. You won’t be charged extra and your data won’t be turned off, but it will be slowed down to almost unusable speeds. Remember dial-up? How slow everything was? We’re talking speeds close to dial-up. Of course, connecting your phone to your home or office Wi-Fi connection will keep your data speeds nice and fast. Only the data connection to T-Mobile gets slowed down; you should connect your phone to Wi-Fi whenever possible as a general rule of thumb, since it doesn’t use your T-Mobile data allotment. There are no two-year contracts, but there’s a catch. Your smartphone that cost you $200? It actually costs a lot more than that, but you paid $200 for it in exchange for a two-year contract with Verizon or AT&T or Sprint or whichever company you’re with. So how can T-Mobile continue to offer cheap phones when there are no two-year contracts anymore? One way is by letting you pay full-price for a phone. Samsung’s Galaxy Note II costs $680 that way. That’s the most

Apple, Facebook and Twitter have all fallen victim to the same attack by hackers over the past few weeks. The good news is that very few users have been affected by these security breaches. Still, the way these companies were attacked–through malicious websites that exploited a security flaw in Java–could happen to anyone. Here’s what you need to know about the recent attacks, and how to stay safe: How did this happen? At least one website related to iPhone app development, called iPhoneDevSDK, fell victim to an attack, which in turn seems to have caused this whole mess. Hackers compromised the account of a site administrator, and used it to inject malicious code into the site. This code allowed malware to infect the computers of people who visited the site, including employees at Apple, Facebook and possibly Twitter. A post on iPhoneDevSDK says the attack likely ended on January 30, but many of the details are still unknown. Who, exactly, was affected? Twitter was the only company that said its users were affected. In a February 1 blog post, Twitter said attackers compromised 250,000 accounts, gaining access to user names, e-mails, session tokens and encrypted versions of passwords. Twitter has reset those users’ passwords and sent e-mails notifying affected users, so they’ll have to create new passwords next time they log in. Facebook says a handful of employee laptops were compromised, but found no evidence of stolen user data. The attack on Apple affected some employees’ Macintosh computers, but the company says there’s “no evidence that any data left Apple.” We may not yet know the full extent of the damage, as anyone who visited iPhoneDevSDK was susceptible to the attack. What was the point of the attack? Bloomberg claims that the hackers “appear to be seeking company secrets, research and intellectual property they can sell underground,” citing “people familiar with the matter.” However, security firm F-Secure speculates that the actual goal was to compromise the accounts of mobile application developers, allowing the attackers to inject malicious code into smartphone apps.

Graph Search is a new tool for Facebook that makes it easier to look for people, places, things and photos. Although Facebook has a search feature already, Graph Search is much more powerful, allowing you to search based on phrases like “restaurants my friends like” or “photos of my friends from college.” What this means is that the things you’ve liked, the places you’ve been and the photos you’re in–even from years ago–are now much easier to dig up. Facebook seems aware of this, and in a new blog post, the company explains how Graph Search works for teens, and provides additional safety tips for all ages. Facebook is rolling out Graph Search slowly–to use it, you still have to join a waiting list–but because some people are already using it, it’s not too early to check on your privacy settings and activity. Here’s how to review your activity to keep anything embarrassing or damaging from coming up in searches: How to Review Tagged Photos The first thing you’ll want to do is review photos you’ve been tagged in, lest a colleague’s search for “photos of people I work with” turns up something scandalous. To do this, click on the gear icon in the top-right corner of Facebook, and click “Privacy Settings.” Then click “Use Activity Log” under the “Who can see my stuff?” section. Or, just click this link. The Activity Log shows everything that involves you on Facebook, but you can view specific types of things using the sidebar on the left side of the screen. Click “Photos” to see all photos you’ve taken or have been tagged in, or click this link. Jared Newman / TIME.com If you see a photo that makes you uneasy, hover your mouse over the little people icon near the right side of that post.
