Let’s face it: location-enabled apps are not going anywhere. With more than 770 million GPS-enabled smartphones worldwide, a new crop of geo-location apps are announced every month. Regardless of user hesitation and drawn out privacy battles, which includes a recently proposed “Apps Act“ to make privacy policies more transparent, a continued surge in mobile traffic means that location-enabled apps are bound to be a permanent fixture on smartphones. So if you have yet to embrace geo-location, here are four free apps to help ease into the inevitable. Ribbon While living in the Fiji Islands, Ribbon founder and California native Tony Alfaro resorted to using an excel spreadsheet to keep track of friends and family when he made his annual trips to the U.S. So Alfaro hatched a plan to coordinate his future trips with travel plans of friends and professionals by combining a calendar with Facebook‘s social graph. The “Ribbon feed” allows users to see future trips, invite others along as well as see friends’ trips displayed with pins using a “TimeMap.” The app also organizes trips by city, eliminating privacy hesitations about revealing exact locations. Rather than perusing Facebook to see which friends are living where, you can use Ribbon to organize and plan meet-ups with old college roommates, colleagues and friends. The app also allows you to manage privacy settings to allow certain people to see your trips, naturally filtering out those residual Facebook friends you haven’t gotten around to unfriending. Though it’s only available for iOS at the moment, an Android release is expected this month. Link: Ribbon [iTunes] Tinder Tinder, a dating app that rolls off the tongue and easily doubles as a verb, has propagated the idea of meeting potential hook-ups or dates through an anonymous game of “hot or not.” It’s a simple concept of matching geo-located users by pressing a green heart to like or a red X to move on. Once two users are matched, the app introduces the users in a private chatroom to carry on a conversation. There are no profiles involved,

Who doesn’t love a good meme? You know, those funny viral videos, images and ecards that seem to take over the Internet (and your Facebook feed) for a week or two and then disappear into web. Everyone likes to join in with their own version of what that apparently-drunk baby or too-serious-for-you cat has to say. Surprisingly, the review section of Amazon products is one place for people to indulge in their love for memes. Whether the products are Internet famous before they were listed on Amazon or quickly became infamous for reasons you’ll discover below, each one of these has become the focal point of viral humor on the world’s biggest retailer site. Amazon The gift that keeps on…no, just no Easily the coolest thing since sliced bread, the Hutzler 571 Banana Slicer slices an entire banana in one quick motion! Imagine the time you’ll save every single morning by slicing your banana in one shot, rather than using a plain old knife! Plus, as the manufacturer points out, children just love slicing their own bananas! Apparently all the cool kids are doing it these days. Such a useless item quickly became a target for Amazon reviewers. Mrs. Toledo exclaims: “What can I say about the 571B Banana Slicer that hasn’t already been said about the wheel, penicillin, or the iPhone…. this is one of the greatest inventions of all time!” SW3k reported on his life changing experience after using this miracle product: “No longer consumed by seething anger and animosity towards thick-skinned yellow fruit, I was able to concentrate on my love of theatre and am writing a musical play about two lovers from rival gangs that just try to make it in the world.” Uncle Pooky offers this final word of wisdom: “Once I figured out I had to peel the banana before using – it works much better!” Amazon Can I get that with a side of “What the what?” Quick, what three words immediately come to mind when you hear “horse head mask“? “Awesome conversation piece,” right? Right! If disturbing your friends (and

With our high-tech tendency to watch TV using DVRs, TV on demand and streaming media, there are some things we miss: like the local news. And though we get most of that news from our favorite online news sources, the local weather report is something we sorely miss—we just don’t miss it quite enough to remember to catch the local news for the forecast every night. Fortunately, there are quite a few apps to keep us on top of the local forecast and help us remember to pack our umbrellas—or carry our sunglasses—when we need them. WeatherBug If you want to know everything there is to know about the weather, WeatherBug is the app for you. When you launch the app, it immediately displays current local weather, including temperature, dew point, humidity, sunrise, sunset, wind, pressure and any active weather alerts for the area. A toolbar along the top lets you switch from the current forecast to a more detailed forecast, hourly forecast, or 7-day forecast. A toolbar along the bottom lets you access weather radar, live webcams in your area, lightning strike information and the pollen count. We especially like the live weather webcams, though if you’re checking weather on the go, be careful not to kill your data plan watching live video. Want weather for another location? The button in the upper right lets you enter new cities and even select the weather station you’d like data from. Not enough info for you? Hitting the button in the upper left brings up a menu which offers lifestyle forecasts, including: golf forecast, outdoor nature forecast, aches & pains forecast, beauty forecast, game day forecast, pollen, family forecast, and fitness forecast. In short: you’d be hard pressed to find weather information WeatherBug didn’t offer. Price: Free (with advertisements) on iTunes, Google Play Store and BlackBerry App World. $2.99 ad-free version on iTunes and Google Play Store. AccuWeather Though it doesn’t offer anything you won’t find in WeatherBug—in fact, it offers slightly less information across the board—we think AccuWeather’s interface is a bit easier to navigate. The main screen offers the current

Once a year, TIME.com puts the spotlight on fifty great websites — focusing mostly on new ones and older ones which are great, but not household names. We’re about to do it again. The list is full of sites which we TIME editors use and love. But we’re always on the hunt for more candidates, and if you’ve got any, we’d love to hear about them in the comments on this post. Rising stars and underappreciated gems are both welcome. There’s no point in stuffing the ballot box — because this isn’t a ballot — and nominations by people involved with the sites in question, or their representatives, aren’t anywhere near as helpful as ones from sincere, unaffiliated fans. Here are our categories: Education Entertainment Family & Kids Games News & Information Productivity Quirky Social Shopping Web Tools And here, to spark your imagination, are our choices for the past few years (if we’ve named a site already, it’s not a candidate for this year): The 50 Best Websites of 2012 The 50 Best Websites of 2011 The 50 Best Websites of 2010 See you in the comments, and thanks in advance.

Gone are the days when the only way to get your hands on a high-end smartphone was to sign a multi-year agreement with a major carrier. Today, you can get top Android phones as well as the iPhone 5, not to mention the new BlackBerry Z10, all without a contract on prepaid plans. Prepaid plans provide the same access to carriers’ voice and data networks, but without the contract (or steep penalties if you leave before your two years are up). You’ll pay up front for the phone, but end up saving, if you stick with a phone for two years. Prepaid used to be viewed as the option for those with poor credit, but that’s not the case anymore. Last year, Cricket was the first prepaid carrier to get the iPhone 5. Now you can also get the iPhone 5 from Straight Talk (offered by Walmart) and Solavei, which is a relative newcomer that uses T-Mobile’s 4G network. That’s much like Boost and Virgin Mobile use Sprint’s network. Perhaps even more indicative of the way things are going is the fact that prepaid-carrier Cricket was announced as a carrier at the launch of one of the most highly anticipated phones of the year, the Samsung Galaxy S 4. Samsung Samsung Galaxy S III Even after the unveiling of the flagship 5-inch Samsung Galaxy S 4, the 4.8-inch Galaxy S III is an impressive phone. It has Samsung’s bright, poppy Super AMOLED display, a fast 1.5GHZ dual core processor that easily handles games and apps, an excellent 8MP camera and access to the fastest 4G networks. Plus, there’s NFC for tapping to pair the phone with accessories and eye tracking, which prevents the screen from timing out while reading books or web pages. It’s available on Cricket ($379.99), Solavei ($575) and T-Mobile ($599.99). Apple iPhone 5 The iPhone 5 is a shoo-in for our best prepaid smartphone list. It’s got the best app store behind it and a huge ecosystem of compatible accessories and cases. Plus, it has a beautiful

Apple held its latest earnings call yesterday – you can read about the financial implications over in our Business & Money section – which ended with CEO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer fielding questions from industry analysts. If you’re more interested in gadgets than numbers (I know I am), the Q&A segments of Apple’s earnings calls are where most of the good stuff lives. Here are five quotes from Tim Cook that relate to Apple’s hardware lines. Android phones with 5-inch and larger screens are getting more and more popular, but we probably shouldn’t expect a huge iPhone anytime soon: The iPhone 5 offers — as you know — a new 4-inch Retina display, which is the most advanced display in the industry. No one comes close to matching the level of quality as the Retina display. It also provides a larger screen size for iPhone customers without sacrificing the one-handed ease of use that our customers love. So we put a lot of thinking into screen size and believe we picked the right one. Why Apple rumors are tricky (likely referring to recent reports of iPad screen production slowdowns): I know there’s been lots of rumors about order cuts and so forth, and so let me just take a moment to make a comment on these. I don’t want to comment on any particular rumor because I would spend my life doing that, but I would suggest it’s good to question the accuracy of any kind of rumor about build plans, and also stress that even if a particular data point were factual, it would be impossible to accurately interpret the data point as to what it meant for our overall business, because the supply chain is very complex and we obviously have multiple sources for things, yields might vary, supplier performance can vary, the beginning inventory positions can vary. I mean, there’s just an inordinate long list of things that would make any single data point not a great proxy for what’s going on. Why Apple won’t

At the electronics mecca that is CES, it’s easy to get caught up in all the big ideas–things like Ultra HD, connected cars and natural input–that aim to transform the world. But sometimes, the neatest gadgets can be found on the fringes of the show floor, where the goal is simply to make life a little easier. Here are a few of my favorite small-scale, clever ideas from CES 2013: Wi-Fi-Connected Light Bulbs (pictured above) Greenwave Reality has gotten rid off all the electrical work required to remotely control your house’s lighting, and instead just stuck Wi-Fi chips in its light bulbs. That allows users to turn lights on or off–either by room or individual bulb–through a free smartphone and tablet app, or with an included remote control. Users can also set lighting profiles, such as “Work” or “Away,” and program daily lighting routines. The up-front price is a bit steep, at roughly $200 for a starter kit with four bulbs, a wireless gateway and a remote control, and each additional bulb costs $20. But GreenWave claims that a well-configured home would save $150 per year on energy costs. Greenwave is working with distribution partners instead of selling the bulbs directly, and hopes to have them on the U.S. market within 60 days. Jared Newman / TIME.com SleepPhones You like listening to music before bed. Your spouse does not. A company called AcousticSheep has the solution: SleepPhones is a headband with two small speakers located around the ears, so it’s more comfortable to wear in bed than earbuds or headphones. The headband can double as an eye mask as well. Although the wired version of SleepPhones has been around for years, AcousticSheep is just getting around to releasing a Bluetooth version in April, so you won’t have to worry about strangling yourself with an audio cable. It’ll also have a built-in button that controls volume and playback, and should last between 5-7 hours per charge when listening to music. The company’s hoping to hit a price of $80.
When the technology historians of the distant future look back on 2012, they may remember it as, above all, the year of the apology. Tech companies kept expressing regret for stuff: product flaws, privacy abuses, advertising deceptions and much, much more. Apple, Dell, Google, Microsoft and Nokia were among the industry giants that issued at least one apology. Even seemingly innocent bystanders such as Spike Lee and KitchenAid got sucked into the vortex of remorse. As is my wont — and in tribute to the late Business 2.0’s 101 Dumbest Moments in Business and Esquire‘s iconic Dubious Achievement Awards — I’ve compiled a list of the year’s biggest tech-related blunders, lapses in judgement, bad behavior and general weirdness. Some of these items were followed by apologies, heartfelt or otherwise; others weren’t but should have been; a few were so self-defeating that they amounted to their own punishment. All of them helped make the year memorable — and collectively, they set a high bar for 2013′s mistakes. January 1. The not-so-tragic death of a not-very-wonderful dream. In 2010, Chandrasekar Rathakrishnan’s Fusion Garage removed TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington from his own CrunchPad project and released it as a half-baked tablet called the JooJoo, which failed almost immediately. In 2011, Fusion Garage pretended to be a start-up called TabCo and released a half-baked tablet called the Grid-10, which failed almost immediately. And in 2012? Fusion Garage’s big accomplishment was failing, period. 2. Crime and self-punishment. After an advertising firm hired by Google pays bloggers to write about Chrome — violating Google’s own rules — the search engine reacts by penalizing its own browser, pushing it down in results for the search term browser for 60 days. The Telegraph 3. Everyone knows it’s Wendi. The British media are amused by the way Wendi Deng Murdoch, spouse of Rupert Murdoch, bawls out her husband on Twitter. Except it turns out that it’s a fraudulent account — even though Twitter has marked it as “verified,” a supposed guarantee that it’s the real deal. 4. Holy piracy, Batman! Sweden recognizes
