RIM Launches BBM Music, and It’s Doomed Already

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion is forging ahead with its BBM Music offering, an attempt at creating a viral music service that will probably fall flat. BBM Music launches today with a free 60-day trial, and costs $5 per month thereafter. Here’s how it works: You pick 50 songs for your music library. If you know anyone who’s also a subscriber, their 50 songs become part of your library as well. You can make playlists from these songs and cache them for offline listening. Every month, you can swap out up to half of those songs for 25 others, and your friends can do the same. (MORE: The Future of Blackberry is “BBX”) I get what RIM is trying to do. The company is trying to create a music service that spreads among many BlackBerry users. If it’s successful, it’ll provide RIM with some extra revenue while encouraging users to stick with their BlackBerry phones instead of going with the iPhone, Android or Windows Phones. But I’m guessing it won’t be successful, for several reasons: First, think of how many people you know who own a BlackBerry, and whose phones aren’t tied to some corporate account that most certainly isn’t participating in BBM Music. Unless you’re willing to go online and share your BBM information with meet random people who want to share their music tastes with you, your potential music pool probably isn’t that big, especially considering the $5 per month requirement. And for that price, the default number of songs you get is laughably small. If you assume an average song length of four minutes, you’re getting a little less than three-and-a-half hours of music. You’re going to get tired of those songs, but you can only switch half of them for new music every month. Besides, if you’re going to pay for a monthly subscription music service, you might as well pay $10 a month for Spotify, Rhapsody, MOG or Rdio, all of which give you millions of songs with no restrictions, social or otherwise.
Napster’s long, troubled life is finally coming to an end, with Rhapsody acquiring the service’s subscribers and assets from Best Buy. The Napster brand will be phased out as part of the deal. Napster was best known for its early run as a peer-to-peer music sharing service (read: a way to download pirated MP3s) before the advent of iTunes and Amazon MP3. After the music industry successfully sued Napster for copyright infringement in 2000, the company filed for bankruptcy and liquidated its assets in 2002. Best Buy bought the brand from Roxio in 2008, and will receive a minority stake in Rhapsody in exchange for Napster. (MORE: How to Roll Your Own Music Streaming Service) As a legitimate streaming service, Napster lacked a strong hook to stand out from the pack. Under Best Buy, Napster first gave away a monthly allotment of MP3s along with its desktop streaming service, but ditched that aspect when it started offering mobile streaming in late 2010. By then, competitors Rhapsody, Rdio and MOG had already gone mobile. Rhapsody needs to bulk up if it wants to do battle with Spotify, whose free service and Facebook integration have made it a rising star in streaming music. Whether Rhapsody will launch its own free version is unclear. The company is only tacking on paid subscribers with this deal. “This is a ‘go big or go home’ business, so our focus is on sustainably growing the company,” Rhapsody President Jon Irwin said in a statement. As of July, the company had 800,000 subscribers, but Rhapsody isn’t saying how many subscribers it will add through the Napster acquisition, or when those subscribers will have to make the transition to Rhapsody.
Remember back in the day when you listened to Pandora and hit your 40-hour listening limit? “Wait, what? No more music?” you ask, brow furrowing as you slowly remove your earbuds. “Geez, 99 cents? For an entire month of streaming radio that I can customize as I please? Does it LOOK like I’m made of money?” (MORE: Which Music Service Should You Use? A Quiz) You pull open a few drawers, rifling through old papers and dusty forgotten pencils. You find a dime and four pennies. Nothing more. “Dammit,” you mutter, eyes shifting side-to-side. Your co-workers? They have no idea. Figures. They still have Pandora. “I…I…can’t do anything without my Steely Dan station. How will I work?” Your breath quickens. Your hands begin to tremble. You instinctively lift your legs and assume a fetal position in your chair, which feels somehow stiffer and less ergonomic than you remember it. You start rocking back and forth, head tucked between your knees. This is what being powerless feels like. “Music should be free.” Bob Dylan said that, maybe, but you’re too shaken to Google it. “Music…should be free.” *** Well, if you’re that person, good news: The tyranny of Pandora’s listening cap has ended. That means unlimited listening, like what Mog and Rdio are doing. They also redid the site with some pretty HTML 5 so it’s faster and sleeker, too, with nifty artist bios and lyrics underneath each song. Steely Dan radio is yours again. Work will get done.
NBC’s iPad app just got a lot more useful with full episodes of popular shows like Community and Parks and Recreation. Both the app and the TV episodes are now free. The selection of full episodes in NBC’s app isn’t too shabby. For primetime, scripted TV shows, the five most recent episodes are available. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon had eight recent shows. And for reasons I can’t explain and don’t want to think about, every single episode from this season of America’s Got Talent can be streamed for free. (MORE: Study: Most Mobile Users Stream Video Near an Actual Television) The update makes NBC the second broadcast TV network to embrace free, streaming TV shows on the iPad. ABC’s iPad app, which also includes free shows, has been available since the iPad launched in April 2010. (CBS’s TV.com app also has full episodes, but is only formatted for the iPhone.) By going free on the iPad, NBC just wiped out a big reason for iPad owners to get Hulu Plus, the $8 per month service that streams new TV shows to the iPad and other devices. Of the three broadcast TV networks backing Hulu—ABC, NBC and Fox—only Fox is holding out on streaming free shows to iOS devices (in fairness, other networks have shows on Hulu Plus as well, including Comedy Central and MTV). I wouldn’t expect Fox to have a change of heart anytime soon. The network recently started delaying the online air date of new TV shows by eight days in an attempt to prop up pay TV. Then again, TV networks are known to do crazy things, like create a massive streaming video website to fight piracy and make ad money on popular TV shows, and then a few years later put restrictions on those shows even if it means inciting more piracy. It’s best not to think about it too much and just live in the moment. Enjoy your free shows while you can. MORE: Why Aren’t More Cable Shows on Hulu?
Despite a smattering of bad press thanks to some security loopholes, Dropbox remains one of the most widely used services on the web, now with over 25 million users. The way they got there is simple, really: Not only were they one of the first to offer free cloud-based storage, but they streamlined the process to make storing and sharing files unequivocally easy. Now YouSendIt, the popular service that offered a way to circumvent large attachment limits in emails, is offering their own cloud-based storage program to compete with Dropbox. (MORE: Dropbox Drops the Ball: How to Secure Your Files for the Cloud) YouSendIt is offering a three-tiered plan similar to Dropbox with varying degrees of functionality (read more here). Their free plan offers 2GB of storage that can be accessed through their desktop sync app à la Dropbox and through iOS devices like the iPhone or iPad, though the current desktop version is Windows-only. Users concerned with security can utilize a pay-per-use security protection program to further safeguard their files. In addition, users will have access to a new service that allows you to sign and send documents directly via email (meaning no messy faxes) and supports PDFs and Word docs, sort of like DocuSign. Also, you’ll be able to send files from your cloud folder directly via email — something handy that Dropbox doesn’t offer. However, file sizes are capped off at 2GB with a maximum of 100 downloads per file. Additionally, their Pro Plan is priced $5 cheaper than Dropbox’s top-tier plan at $15 and offers unlimited storage versus the latter’s 100GB cap. You’ll have unlimited downloads, no file size limits, and additional file security built in, plus a hosted file page where others can submit documents to you. There’s also a Corporate Suite offered for companies with five users or more. Mac OS X and Android apps aren’t available, but are planned to be unveiled in the coming months. (MORE: Some of the Best Clouds are Personal Clouds) If you already have a Dropbox account it

The American Customer Satisfaction Index (ASCI) is a national survey conducted by the University of Michigan that evaluates customer satisfaction with a number of businesses annually. In the internet sector, they’ve looked at and ranked three different types of services—social media, search engines and news sites—to determine which companies customers are most satisfied with on a scale of 1 to 100. (MORE: More than 50% of Parents Use Facebook to Spy On Their Kids) Social media is one of the least satisfactory sectors overall, with Facebook, somewhat surprisingly, coming in last with an average customer satisfaction rating of 66%. Leading the pack is Wikipedia with an average score of 78%, and YouTube comes in second place with 74%. The results did not account for MySpace since there weren’t enough users to create a meaningful sample, according to the folks who administered the study. Twitter, who I’ve been a staunch supporter of, was also not included in the survey, though it isn’t clear why. As for search engines, Google edges Bing with an 83% versus 82% rating in terms of user satisfaction. Bing’s market share has reportedly grown considerably in the last year as it now accounts for 17% overall of the search engine market. Ask.com came in third with a rating of 80%. Fox News was ranked far and away the most satisfactory news site with an average score of 82%; ABC News came in second at 77% and USA Today grabbed the third spot at 76%. The New York Times saw a 3% decrease in overall satisfaction down to 73%, though the survey was conducted around the time they were instituting their paywall. The Huffington Post came in last with an overall rating of 69%. (PHOTOS: Life Inside Facebook’s Headquarters) Read the rest of the survey results here, and make of them what you will. The survey speaks to a few ideas already put out there on the web, namely that we’re incredibly critical of social media (like Facebook), and plenty of people looooove Google (hence the prolonged honeymoon with

(UPDATE: Spotify has clarified that the software made available to me is the U.K. version of the service, not the U.S. version. Therefore, things may change before launch, and these should be considered early impressions.) Spotify’s U.S. launch has been a long time coming, and now it’s nearly here. Although the subscription music service hasn’t announced a launch date for the United States, you can now sign up for an early invite. Spotify is a big deal because of its free service. Imagine if Apple let you stream its entire iTunes catalog in exchange for only an occasional advertisement, and that’s basically what Spotify is. (PHOTOS: The 10 Greatest Electric-Guitar Players) The catch is that you can only listen to 10 hours per month, and only 5 listens per track, or you can lift those restrictions for $10 per month, or $5 per month without mobile access. (UPDATE: This information was taken from the sign-up page provided to me, and from Spotify’s terms of service, but Spotify says it hasn’t announced pricing or conditions for U.S. users yet.) Other subscription music services, such as MOG, Rhapsody, Rdio and Zune Pass only offer brief trials, so Spotify is a better service for music discovery, and it has more potential to convert people into premium members. I just took a hands-on tour of the service, using a press account provided by Spotify. And while the service has great potential, much of it is squandered on a mobile app that doesn’t keep pace with the competition. But let’s start with the desktop experience. Instead of offering its music through a web browser, Spotify requires you to download some software, and for good reason: The software can import your existing music library, including playlists, so you theoretically never have use iTunes again. Any gaps in Spotify’s own library—say, unsigned indie artists or obscure labels—can be filled in by your own local collection, and you can use Spotify’s streaming catalog to augment your existing playlists. Very cool. If only the mobile experience—available on iPhone and

Like a blind oaf, Best Buy has stumbled into the cloud music arena. What Best Buy hasn’t done is given you any clear reasons to pay attention to this service in the first place. From start to finish, Best Buy Music Cloud is a mess. Its product page gives you a vague sense of what the service offers — sync your music to the cloud and listen to it anywhere — but doesn’t specify what you get for free and what you get as a premium subscriber. (According to Engadget, there will be a $4 per month plan that provides some still-undisclosed benefits.) (MORE: Dropbox Drops the Ball: How to Secure Your Files in the Cloud) If you want to get acquainted with the service, you’ve got to hand over your name and e-mail address, and then download software that runs in the background, forever monitoring your music library. I’m sorry, but if you have to download software to make the service work, you’ve missed the point of cloud music. Amazon’s Cloud Player, at least, gives users the option of uploading individual tracks without the use of a software manager. With Best Buy, you’ve just got to trust that everything works, and then install a big piece of bloatware on your PC that, by default, runs at startup. By the way, the software didn’t work for me. It’s unable to scan my music library, forever stuck at a status message that says “pre-registering.” Because there’s no documentation with the software, I’ll never even know what that means.

What separates independent author John Locke from his esteemed contemporaries in the “Kindle Million Club” – the likes of which includes Stieg Larsson and Nora Roberts – is that he self-published his books through the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) platform with no backing from major publishers. That means no mustache-twisting management meetings, no corporate marketing infighting, and no human-sized cardboard cutouts at Barnes & Noble. (The last part’s a bummer). So how’d he do it? By leveraging people’s propensity for stuff under a dollar, lowering his prices down to 99 cents per eBook. (MORE: Spam Invades the Kindle Store) According to the LA Times, the author saw an opportunity in the KDP program’s royalty structure, which states that authors who sell their books for $2.99 to $9.99 get a 70% royalty rate. Authors who price their books either below or above, on the other hand, get a lower return rate of 35% per book sold — a mechanism meant to deter writers from pricing their work too low (which would require lots of units sold to be successful) or too high (so that Amazon can underprice its competitors). After initially selling his eBooks for $2.99, Locke lowered his price to 99 cents, a move that caused sales of his novels — which includes a best-selling series of mystery-thrillers — to soar. According to his website, he is selling a Kindle book “every seven seconds,” and has so far notched himself just over 1,010,370 sales, thus earning himself a nice payday of around $353,000. “It’s so exciting that self-publishing has allowed John Locke to achieve a milestone like this,” says Russ Grandinetti, Vice President of Kindle Content. “We’re happy to see Kindle Direct Publishing succeeding for both authors and customers and are proud to welcome him to the Kindle Million Club.” The rise of the self-published author, of course, spells bad news for the traditional book publishing industry, whose business model is predicated on an author advance system that squeezes high-returns out of a select few books—at least relative to the

Score one for the MPAA. Yesterday, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee voted to make illegal video streaming a felony. The proposed law still has to go through to the full Senate for voting before you start having to be more careful about where you’re clicking. (MORE: Study: 32% of Netflix Customers Plan to Cut Their Cable Costs) The move, not surprisingly, is largely backed by the guys who run Hollywood: It’s mainly supported by the Screen Actors Guild, the Motion Picture Association of America, the Independent Film & Television Alliance and many other people in the entertainment business. National Association of Theatre Owners President John Fithian points out: “To the technicians, designers, construction workers, and artists who support their families through their work in entertainment, there’s no difference between illegal downloading and illegal streaming – it’s all theft that hurts their work, their wages and their benefits.” The upgrade of the offense to a felony is fairly serious, considering the fact that illegally streaming 10 videos over a six-month period is now enough to land you in jail for five years. Yowza. (MORE: Warner Announces China’s First Video on Demand Service, but Is It Legal?) It won’t become law until it passes through the Senate and Obama, but how about just saving yourself the hassle and getting a Netflix account like the rest of America already?

flâneur – noun; idler or lounger Everyone loves mooching around the streets of a strange city via the wonderful Street View feature on Google Maps. But even so, there’s a lot of tedious clicking and mousing to be done if you really want to get the feel of a place. What we need is a more relaxing way to explore. London-based writer, publisher, and coder James Bridle thought the same, and decided to do something about it. The result is Robot Flâneur, a site designed to put the awe back in exploration. Pick a city (a selection of some of the world’s biggest and most interesting is on offer), hit the full screen button, and sit back with the cool drink of your choice to enjoy the ride. The Robot will load up random street views from that city, cycling through them slowly so you have plenty of time to take it all in. If you don’t like what you’re seeing, it’s easy to skip onto the next thing. If you do, it’s just as easy to pause. Techland got in touch to ask Bridle what it was all about. He said: “I like cities a lot. I’m currently reshooting Patrick Keiller’s film London and working on an actual book about maps, and I’ve also got an ongoing project called the New Aesthetic which is in part concerned with the way that machines see, and Robot Flaneur is very much a product of those interests.” But it was also for the geolulz too? “Yeah, for the geolulz too, obviously.” More on TIME.com: Google Pedals Street View Trike Through Roman Colosseum, Other Touristy Sites Google in Germany: Houses Egged, Sidewalk Birth Hoaxed Google Maps Now Open for Editing in U.S.

While the job market here in the U.S. is far from recovered, according to security columnist Brian Krebs’ latest piece, at least one overseas “industry” is doing well enough to recruit new employees: malware coding. In Russia, Krebs states that employers are utilizing a new recruitment tool to lure programmers, offering base salaries ranging anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 a month. How exactly are they doing it? The old fashioned way: banner ads. He states: “Many of the ads highlight job openings for coders who are skilled in devising custom ‘crypters,’ programs designed to change the appearance of known malware so that it goes undetected by anti-virus software. Anti-virus signatures are based on snippets of code found within known malware samples, and crypters can try to help hide or obfuscate the code.” In addition to “crypters,” developers familiar with “web injects” — plug-ins for Trojans — are also being sought for recruitment, as an anonymous reader on Slashdot points out. Essentially, this does away with the old stigma of the hacker-as-broody-teenager locked in his bedroom, and replaces it with something much more frightening: malware gangs with fully realized infrastructures. They’re investing in research and development like traditional companies, and using sophisticated recruitment tools like ads to attract talent. As PC Magazine notes, the recent round of MacDefender software was tracked back to ChronoPay – Russia’s largest payment site. Similarly, eWeek is reporting that a new Zeus malware scam is making its way around LinkedIn. All these breadcrumbs seem to lead back to Eurasia as a hotbed for a booming market of malware nastiness.
The latest invitation-only webapp to get the geeks excited goes under the snappy name of IFTTT, aka If This Then That. Think of it as digital duct tape. A Rube Goldberg machine for connecting up all the other web services you use. The idea is that you set up rules, based on triggers and actions culled from your activity on those other services. A trigger might be something like “When I post something new on my YouTube channel”, and the corresponding action might be “Post a link to it on my Twitter account.” Or you might have a rule that emails your mom every time you post on Facebook, because Mom isn’t on Facebook. Yet. All these triggers and actions are pulled from IFTTT’s list of channels, which connect it to an impressive list of webapps and web services. They include Gmail, Facebook, Foursquare, Flickr, Instagram, WordPress, Tumblr and YouTube. The team who built IFTTT came up with the phrase “digital duct tape”, but they also call it “event-driven programming for the masses”. Or to put it another way: “Much like in the physical world when a 12 year old wants a lightsaber, cuts the handle off an old broom and shoves a bike grip on the other end, you can take two things in the digital world and combine them in ways the original creators never imagined.” That’s what IFTTT is all about. If you combine Thing 1 from one website, and Thing 2 from another, what interesting, useful, automated new Things can you create? The more you think about it, the more intriguing the possibilities become. Want to join in the fun? You can, but for the time being it’s invite-only. Click the Get Yours! link on the IFTTT home page and ask for one – they probably have a set of rules running in the background to take care of it.

Apple’s unrivaled ability to build pre-launch hype for a product seems to have carried over into an unlikely market: ol’ fashioned books. Like, those things you read. Publishers Simon & Schuster announced that they’d be publishing the first exclusive biography on the company’s turtlenecked leader, iSteve: The Book of Jobs, two months ago, and the book is now available on Amazon for pre-order. The 448-page book is already ranked #1 in a few categories, even though its official pub date is over eight months away (March 6, 2012): It’s #1 in Biographies & Memoirs, #1 in Science and #1 in Business & Investing. At the time of writing this, it’s also fluctuating between #12 and #13 overall, and that number seems poised to climb higher. It was announced in 2009 that author and former TIME Managing Editor Walter Isaacson, who previously penned biographies on other smart guys such as Albert Einstein and Benjamin Franklin, would be working with Jobs to produce the work. The Apple figurehead’s notorious secrecy and ascent to the top of the tech world seems to have captivated the interest of Apple fans – whose intense loyalties we’ve investigated before – and hopefully some of the mystery shrouding Jobs will be lifted to make it interesting for casual readers: (i.e. Why all the health secrecy? Why black turtlenecks? Isn’t it hot in Cupertino? WILL THE BOOK HAVE A FRONT-FACING CAMERA?! Etc. etc.) Pre-order will cost $19.80 for hardcover (34% off the $30 list price), and $14.99 for the Kindle edition. More on TIME.com: Will Apple’s iCloud Be the New iTunes?
Is there a finite limit to the number of friends we can stay in contact with? It would appear so, at least according to Dunbar’s number, which dictates that our maximum number for meaningful relationships with others hovers around 150. Alasdair Wilkins of io9 has a fascinating post looking at the studies of British anthropologist Robin Dunbar, who – time and time again – kept coming back to 150 as the normal human threshold for quality relationships. io9 says: “[Dunbar] examined human social groupings throughout history, and he kept coming back to that 150 number. It’s the number of people who lived in ancient Neolithic farming villages, the basic unit size for the armies of both ancient Rome and modern times, and the maximum size of most nomadic tribes.” The emphasis is on quality relationships, in that a community’s best interest is in staying together. It makes sense that a life or death fighting unit would be interdependent – same thing with ancient tribes, who lacked the resources to feed themselves on a larger scale. But what about digital relationships facilitated through social media? A team of researchers at Indiana University decided to test this theory on Twitter. Taking a look at over 380 million tweets to find patterns in user behavior, the researchers concluded that there was indeed a finite limit to the number of other Twitter users we could follow before becoming overwhelmed: somewhere between 100 and 200. Makes sense. It’s this focus on maintaining high-quality relationships that drives Path, the photo-focused social network with a maximum limit of 50 friends, as opposed to less substantial online relationships. Even Facebook recently adopted a similar philosophy, limiting your newsfeed to a more manageable 250 friends. As for Twitter, I guess the benefits of following less than 200 other accounts depends on your agenda for using the service. Do you use it like an RSS feed to gather news and information? Or do you use Twitter for personal reasons, like for staying in contact with friends you otherwise wouldn’t really
