PC makers are striking out with traditional laptops, so Acer decided to try something different with the Aspire R7. I’ve been calling it “The Star Trek Laptop,” mainly because of its promotional tie-in to Into Darkness, and partly because, when posed just the right way, it looks like the USS Enterprise. (I’m guessing it’s not a coincidence.) The Acer Aspire R7 is a departure from normal laptop design, with an extended hinge that lets the screen float over the base, and an odd placement of the trackpad behind the keyboard. Acer could be onto something here, but the idea needs refinement. With its extended hinge, the R7 allows you to pull the screen forward, blocking the trackpad but making the touchscreen easier to reach. It also lets you flip the display over so someone across the table can take a look, or fold it down into a tablet–though the hinge prevents the screen from laying completely flush with the base. Jared Newman / TIME.com My favorite mode of all: by bringing the hinge part-way forward, and tilting the screen slightly upward, the R7 gains an almost desktop-like quality. The display hovers a few inches above the base of the laptop, leaving enough room to access the trackpad. The screen also becomes easier to see and touch this way, and it helps shift the weight balance of the laptop toward the center. It makes a lot of sense, especially when the laptop is on your lap. The R7’s flexibility requires one major trade-off: The keyboard simply has to be up front, otherwise it’d be difficult or impossible to use, which means the trackpad gets kicked to the back. As such, there’s no place to rest your palm while using the trackpad without accidentally engaging the keyboard. It doesn’t help that the trackpad is placed at dead-center of the laptop. I wouldn’t mind if Acer slid the trackpad all the way over to the right side, where a strip of plastic beyond the keyboard provides a resting place for the user’s palm.

The battle for cheap tablet supremacy usually flares up only once a year. As the Christmas shopping season rolls around, we often see new tablets from Amazon and Barnes & Noble, and low-cost slates from other companies trying to keep up. But if you’re getting interested in picking up a budget tablet just now, the middle of the year is looking pretty good. Right now, Amazon and Barnes & Noble are both offering discounts on their respective Kindle Fire and Nook tablets, in honor of Mother’s Day: 7-inch Nook HD: $149 for 8 GB, $179 for 16 GB ($50 discount) 8.9-inch Nook HD+: $179 for 16 GB, $209 for 32 GB ($90 discount) 7-inch Kindle Fire HD: $179 for 16 GB with FIRE4MOM coupon code ($20 discount) Granted, these price drops are temporary, but in the past both companies have foreshadowed permanent price cuts with these kinds of promotions. Amazon, for instance, slashed prices on the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD last March, just a month after offering discounts for Valentine’s Day. Although the company has yet make a permanent price cut to its 7-inch tablet, I’ll be surprised if its not coming soon, given the lower price of Barnes & Noble’s Nook (with its newfound Google Play support). Other hardware makers are figuring out how to play the cheap tablet game as well. Acer just announced the the Iconia A1 for $169. It’s an Android tablet with the same screen resolution and aspect ratio as Apple’s iPad Mini, but for half the price. HP just launched its own cheap Android tablet, the Slate 7, also for $169. Analyst Ross Rubin put it succinctly on Twitter last week: Android tablets; $169 is the new $199.— Ross Rubin (@rossrubin) May 03, 2013 That’s not all. Next week, Google is holding a developer conference in San Francisco, where the company will likely announce a follow-up to its Nexus 7 tablet. Will Google stick with a $200 price tag? Maybe, but odds are that the company will drop the price on the current model,

Say what you will about Windows 8. If it’s done anything, it’s gotten hardware manufacturers to rethink the tried-and-true laptop design. Case in point: two new machines from Acer – the 15.6-inch Aspire R7 and the 11.6-inch Aspire P3. Let’s start with the Aspire R7, as it’s the wildest of the pair: Where in the name of all that’s sensible in this world is the trackpad? Ah, here it is behind the keyboard: Why, why, why? To make you touch the screen is why. The screen is “mounted on Acer’s ‘Ezel Hinge’,” according to the company, so it “can flip, reverse, lie flat or float.” Acer’s angle is that the closer the screen is to you, the less cumbersome it is to touch it while using it in laptop mode. As you can see in the above video, the screen can be flipped backward to show something to someone sitting across the table from you. Or you can fold it down flat to use the R7 like a tablet. The whole thing tips the scales at over five pounds, however, so this is a computer first and a tablet second. It’ll be available May 17 from Best Buy, with a suggested retail price of $1,000. Then there’s the Aspire P3. It’s a trackpad-less touchscreen Ultrabook wherein the 11.6-inch screen detaches from the included keyboard cover for use as a tablet: We’ve seen similar designs from the likes of the Microsoft Surface tablets, the Lenovo Helix getup we saw at CES, and a handful of Android tablet combos. This one’s got some decent oomph under the hood, Acer’s promising “up to six hours” of battery life, and when folded into its keyboard case, it looks like it’d be easy to tote around: Undocked as a tablet, the P3 weighs a wee bit over three pounds and measures a little over three-quarters of an inch thick. It’s available “immediately” for $800, according to Acer, though I’m not able to find a place to buy it quite yet.
Out of the entire first wave of Windows 8 hybrids that launched late last year, Acer’s Iconia W510 was the one that interested me most. With a 10.1-inch screen, it’s smaller than all the other hybrids, and more manageable when used as a tablet. When plugged into its dock, the W510 becomes a small laptop (a netbook, if you will), with a keyboard, trackpad, a full-sized USB port and extended battery life. The W510 is also a bit cheaper than some other Windows 8 hybrids, at $750 for the 64 GB version and dock, or $500 for a 32 GB tablet alone. It’s all the more heartbreaking, then, that Acer’s Iconia W510 isn’t very good. As a tablet, it feels underpowered, unable to play even some basic games like Jetpack Joyride at consistently smooth framerates. As a laptop, it’s even worse, not only because of a weak processor and meager amount of memory, but because of a glaring flaw in the dock’s trackpad, which I’ll talk about later. The W510 looks cool, at least. The tablet, while not as slim as an iPad or some Android tablets, feels so much more inviting to hold than Windows 8 tablets with 11.6-inch displays. The mechanism by which the tablet connects to the W510 keyboard dock has a clever design: The tablet slides right into the dock’s wide brace, and automatically latches on. To remove the tablet from the dock, you just slide a little latch on the front of the brace, and pull the tablet up. Although the tablet does wobble in its brace if you jiggle it, the laptop hinge is stiff enough to keep the screen upright at any angle. Jared Newman / TIME.com But that’s where the solid design ends. Both the tablet and the dock are made of cheap plastic, and the tablet itself is particularly flimsy. Hold it in both hands and flex gently, and you can watch the whole thing bend out of shape. When the tablet and dock are connected, the entire construction becomes screen-heavy, so

MacBook Air style with a more PC-like pricetag: That’s the promise of Acer’s new S3 ultrabook. At $900, it beats Apple’s lowest-priced 13-inch MacBook Air by a full $400 while measuring up almost identically in weight and thickness. So what’s the catch? No catch! Okay, there’s a catch. But first, the specs! Dual-core Intel Core i5 processor running at 1.6GHz 4GB of memory 320GB hard drive for file storage, plus a second 20GB solid state drive that houses the operating system (Windows 7 Home Premium) and maintains the computer’s state for resuming from standby in less than two seconds Card reader, two USB ports, HDMI output Just over half an inch thick, just under three pounds, measures about 12.5 inches wide and about 8.5 inches long. So what do you get for $900? It’s fast. It’s very portable. The keyboard’s pretty good. The resume-from-standby time is amazing, and it looks great. (MORE: Eight New Tablets and Ultrabooks You Should Know About) What’s missing? Battery life leaves a bit to be desired: You’ll get around four hours if you’re really pushing it, maybe four and a half if you’re moseying. Gaming? Meh. Serious gaming? No! The screen doesn’t get all that bright, either. And if you’re comparing this to a MacBook Air, you also lose the backlit keyboard and the Acer’s screen resolution is 1366×768 versus 1440×900 with the MacBook Air. All things considered, the Acer S3 makes a good choice for a 13-inch notebook thanks in large part to its form factor and its nimble performance. The biggest strike against it is its somewhat lackluster battery life. Other than that, you’re getting a lot for well shy of a grand. Want more videos like this?
Tech companies have been flexing their design muscles at the IFA trade show in Berlin this week, trying to prove that Apple’s not the only one that can make ultra-thin, ultra-light laptops and tablets. Turns out that these PC makers can out-slim the iPad and the MacBook Air after all. They just needed Apple to start the fire. Here’s a peek at the best-looking tablets and “Ultrabook” laptops revealed at IFA 2011.

Acer’s newest tablet, the 7-inch Iconia Tab A100, is the first of its size out of the gate to run Google’s made-for-tablets “Honeycomb” version of the Android operating system. There are two versions of the tablet available—a 16-gigabyte model with an MSRP of $350 and an 8-gigabyte model with an MSRP of $330—which should begin hitting retail stores shortly. (VIDEO: Outrage! Acer Tablet Gets Priced Competitively) Acer sent me a review unit this week, and while I haven’t played with it enough to make a thorough evaluation of it yet, its low price tag (I’d expect the 8-gigabyte version to hit $299 or less pretty quickly) married with its above-average hardware specs, new-ish operating system, and the fact that the 7-inch tablet arena doesn’t exactly have a whole lot of fierce competition right now may put the A100 at or near the top of a pretty short list. Just some very quick first impressions: I like the size—it’s half an inch thick and weighs a shade under a pound—and the dual-core processor and one-gigabyte of RAM make everything pretty slick. The battery life leaves quite a bit to be desired—especially if you’re used to bigger 10-inch tablets—as it peters out at around four hours or so, depending on screen brightness and which applications you’re running. Acer claims a maximum of five hours. Here’s a look at some of the early reviews from around the web: Engadget | CNET | PCWorld | LAPTOP | PCMag.com

So these Windows-based “ultrabooks” we’ve been hearing about recently should be making their way to consumers in time for the holidays. The promise: MacBook Air-like design and portability, but with cheaper price points and, of course, Windows. (MORE: The Race to Beat the MacBook Air Is On) And while we’ve seen a teaser image of what’s supposed to be one of the first ultrabooks out of the gate, the ASUS UX21, a Vietnamese blog apparently has images and specs of one of the Acer models. The site claims that the 13.3-inch notebook will be called the Acer Aspire 3951, it’ll measure about a half-inch thick, and it’ll weigh around three pounds. It’ll apparently launch in October with a price between $770 and $960 depending upon its configuration. Battery life is apparently rated at around six hours with 30-day standby time and a resume-from-sleep time of under two seconds. This, of course, is all in the rumor phase right now (Acer has unsurprisingly declined to comment) and the supposedly leaked images are by no means actual photos—just renderings—but if the information pans out, it could make for a compelling purchase for anyone longing for MacBook Air style coupled with the Windows platform. I’ll be most interested to see if any of these ultrabooks manage to stuff a 1440×900-resolution screen into the 13.3-inch chassis like Apple has done with the 13.3-inch MacBook Air. That, to my mind, is one of the best features of the product line aside from the portability. Something tells me that with an emphasis on low prices—prices which have reportedly been creeping upwards already—getting an ultrabook with a screen resolution higher than 1280×800 or 1366×768 at under $1,000 is going to be a tall order.
Acer continues to ignore the memo that Android tablets aren’t supposed to be priced competitively. Its 7-inch tablet, the Acer Iconia A100, will arrive in August for a mere $300 — at least according to a memo sent to retail partners and snagged by Engadget. Last we heard, the Iconia Tab had a 1024-by-600 resolution display, 1 GHz dual-core Nvidia Tegra processor, front and rear cameras and 8 GB of internal storage. Nothing remarkable, but the tablet at least stands out due to its smaller size than the 10-inch Android tablets available now. We’ve seen a couple other companies announce 7-inch tablets over the last few months, including ViewSonic and Huawei, but so far neither company has brought its product to market. (MORE: An Upgraded 7-inch ‘Galaxy Tab’ Android Tablet? Let’s Hope So) Acer originally planned to launch the Iconia A500 in May, but reportedly delayed the tablet due to compatibility issues with Android Honeycomb, the tablet version of Google’s operating system. That’s no surprise; until now, nearly every Honeycomb tablet has come with a 10.1-inch, 1280-by-800 resolution display. Android 3.2, however, opens the door to 7-inch tablets by supporting the very resolution that Acer is using in the A100. I like the 7-inch tablet size because it can fit comfortably in one hand and allows for easy typing with thumbs. It’s also a great size for gaming. Still, we’ve yet to see how Honeycomb apps translate into slightly smaller screens. Google is introducing ways to make screen size management easier for app developers, but it remains to be seen how this’ll translate into the real world. If 10-inch tablets are more your thing, DigiTimes reports a rumor that Acer will slash the price of its 10-inch Iconia A500 tablet from $450 to $395. Apparently the company wants to stay competitive with Asus’ Eee Pad Transformer tablet, echoing the companies’ fierce battle for netbook dominance in previous years, although I wouldn’t be surprised if Acer is tired of being trounced by the iPad as well.
As the second and final keynote address at Google’s developer conference winds down, we’re left with news of Google’s web-only Chrome OS (operating system) and the machines that’ll power it. You may recall that Google announced Chrome OS notebooks late last year and shipped out a whole bunch of prototype units to people in anticipation of an actual retail launch this summer. The Chrome OS computers, now called Chromebooks, launch directly into a Google web browser and are geared at just about anything you’d care to do online. There are a few offline features as well, but the promise of Chrome OS is that everything “just works” and is seamless so that if your computer breaks or gets stolen, for instance, you can just buy another Chromebook and all your stuff will still be right where it was since it all lives online when you use the Chrome operating system. See the above video for more detail. Rumors began going around last month that these upcoming Chrome notebooks would be available under some sort of monthly payment plan. The big news was that for $20 per month, you’d get a Chromebook and whenever a new model of that Chromebook came out, you’d get the newest version of it. You’d be forking over $20 per month to Google for as long as you wanted a Chromebook but in exchange, you’d get the latest and greatest hardware. I thought it was a fair deal and a smart move. However as Google revealed today, that $20-per-month deal is only good for educational institutions. There’s also a $28-per-month deal that businesses can use, too. So what’s the deal for regular consumers? There are two Chromebook models that’ll be available at launch on June 15: one from Samsung and one from Acer. The Samsung version will cost $430 for a Wi-Fi only version and $500 for a Wi-Fi + 3G version. The Acer version’s pricing will start at $350. Both machines have an eight-second boot time and instantly resume from standby, which is impressive.
Well this is kind of awkward. In an interview published on Forbes’ blog yesterday, Eric Ackerson, a senior product marketing and brand manager at Acer, said that “the death of netbooks is overstated,” in regard to the proliferation of tablets like the iPad. His reasoning is simple: tablets are expensive, netbooks are not. The article reports that while netbooks are no longer seeing the explosive growth they used to, their more reasonable price points — most are around $250, while tablets are typically $499 and up — will appeal to consumers enough to keep companies like Acer alive. Party hats, everyone! Uh-uh, not so fast, says the tablet market, which, in new data collected by Nielson and published early this morning, reveals that portable devices like the iPad aren’t just eating into the netbook market — they’re eating into just about everything. Here’s a key factoid: 35 percent of tablet owners who also owned a desktop computer reported using their desktop less often or not at all, while 32 percent of those who also owned laptops, said they used their laptop less often or never since acquiring a tablet. Makes sense, unless you’re the type who likes to sit at your PC with a tablet in your lap (which I’ve been guilty of). For most, though, it’s completely reasonable shiny new tablets would eat into a user’s time spent doing other things. But the more damning piece of evidence for netbooks is that in the short year since the market leading iPad launched in 2010 (now with the Xoom and PlayBook entering the space), one-third of tablet owners are shunning their other devices. And that number is expected to grow. Will the endangered netbook survive, even in aftermath of the tablets’ Trail of Destruction? We’ll find out soon. And to its credit, Acer’s also hedging its bets with tablets of its own anyway. But I’m reminded of an old Wired essay that made a compelling case for “just good enough” technology, which the netbook is quickly becoming. It argues that minimal and affordable
