Google’s Android software includes one of the best smartphone keyboards around, but you might not know it if you own a phone from Samsung or HTC. Both companies, at least in their latest Android phones, have replaced the main Google keyboard with their own homemade offerings–and they’re not as good. I’m not crazy about the default keyboard on my HTC One, and Samsung’s been criticized by some reviewers for its own Galaxy S4 keyboard as well. Fortunately, Google is now offering a way for users running Android 4.0 and higher to install the company’s own software keyboard. Just head to Google Play, install the app, and follow the setup instructions. I like how simple and solid Google Keyboard is compared to other offerings. Individual keys have just the right amount of dark spacing between them, and just the right amount of vibration feedback when you press each letter. Gesture typing is supported, so you can drag a finger across each letter and the keyboard will predict the word you’re trying to write. By default, the keyboard uses names from your contact list for suggested words and corrections. It even tries to predict the next word as you type. None of this amounts to anything revolutionary. You can already find gesture typing and predictions in SwiftKey and Swype, which are also available through Google Play. But SwiftKey’s gesture typing doesn’t seem quite as accurate to me as the competition. As for Swype, I find that its non-gesture typing experience isn’t as solid as Google’s, and it requires you to use Dragon for voice dictation, rather than Google’s superior voice transcription. Google Keyboard is the best of both worlds, and it’s free. Previously, Google had only offered its own keyboard on phones running Android 4.2–the latest version of the software. It was possible to manually load the application onto an older Android phone, or to seek out an unauthorized version in Google Play, but neither of those solutions were ideal. By offering its own keyboard directly through Google Play, Google is continuing its

Apple may still be the undisputed king of the app stores, but new research suggests that its reign may have less than a year left, barring any surprising developments (and, no, the iPhone 4S doesn’t count as a surprising development). Currently, according to research from Xyologic, monthly Apple app downloads in the U.S. are nearly double those of Android downloads—494 million versus 279 million in August—with the vast majority of Apple apps being downloaded for the iPhone (417 million, versus the iPad’s 77 million). But the company’s analysis suggests that Android’s app download rate will overtake Apple’s by June 2012. Android has already overtaken Apple in some overseas markets (namely, the Czech Republic, Poland and Portugal), but it will take until the middle of next year for the same to be true worldwide. Coincidentally—or not, perhaps—that’s around the same time the Android Market is expected to finally reach parity with the number of available apps in Apple’s App Store. A quirk in Xyologic’s research could throw everything into disarray, however; there is no hard data for the Chinese market in terms of Android app downloads. Although estimates are made for downloads through the official Marketplace in China, Android apps are also available in other storefronts, meaning that the 22 million estimate for August could be off by as much as a factor of four. That may give Apple even more reason to think about doing something to boost its own App Store downloads sooner rather than later.
If you live with other people, you know the problem: On Wednesday you notice that you’re out of milk, but you’ve forgotten about that by the time your spouse goes shopping on Friday. Or you write a note on that pad on the fridge, but your handwriting is illegible. Or what if the two of you go shopping at different stores and both buy milk? We’re used to living with these problems, but we don’t have to any more. Cloud-based shopping list services combined with smartphone apps ease shopping chores. When you use your smartphone to mark what needs to be bought, the rest of the family will see it on their phones as well. Grocery Gadgets: On the Web and In Your Phone At least you can do that with the service I’m recommending, Grocery Gadgets. You can access the service on your browser for free, but that’s of limited use because the web site isn’t mobile-friendly. You probably don’t want to create this week’s shopping list on a computer, and you certainly don’t want to take one shopping. So you’re best off using Grocery Gadgets on your smartphone. And while that’s not free, it’s not exactly expensive, either. The iPhone app costs $4; the Android one, $3. These apps are almost functionally identical, although the iPhone one is prettier to look at. Apps are also available for BlackBerry, Nokia, and Windows Phone handsets. (LIST: 50 Best iPhone Apps of 2011) There are free apps, as well, but they’re too severely crippled to be useful. There are also no ongoing charges for the service. Grocery Gadgets syncs the data on your phone to the data in the cloud. You and your family will have the same shopping list on all of your phones. Grocery Gadgets has one other fault I want to bring up right now: The user interface isn’t as obvious as it should be, especially if you’re moving between the website and a phone app. For instance, the web version has a “Favorites” list which contains every

Responding to a Twitter campaign led by LGBT activist website AllOut.org, Google this week pulled a controversial app called “Is My Son Gay?” from its Android Market. The app was released last month to immediate controversy, with many upset by the idea of an app that, following a 20-question quiz, would tell parents whether their sons were gay or straight. Questions included “Does he like to dress up nicely?” and “Does he like diva singers?”. (MORE: Apple Removes Controversial Anti-Israel App from App Store) According to a statement from French development team Enneme Moi, who created the app to promote Christophe de Baran’s novel of the same name, the app was “conceived with a playful approach” and “not based at all on scientific research.” Unsurprisingly, not everyone thought the app was so playful. In a statement from AllOut.org co-founder Andre Banks celebrating the app’s removal, it was called “outrageous and only [serving] to further negative stereotypes and homophobia.” The organization had led a campaign that saw hundreds of members tweet the message “Demand that @Google & #Android dump homophobic ‘Is My Son #Gay?’ app NOW, no excuses! #LGBT”. Google hasn’t officially commented on the situation, but both the English and French versions of the app quietly disappeared from the Android Market earlier this week.
According to a new survey by Nielsen, the most used app by men as indicated by metered device usage is—drumroll, please—Google Maps. In taking a look at how many Android owners used an app in the past 30 days, the study found that 77.1% of males used Google Maps (disregarding the requisite Android Market app). (MORE: Guess How Big Android’s Lead Over Apple is Now?) Gmail came in a close second (75.5%), with Google Search (72.4%), Facebook (66.9%), and YouTube (53.7%) rounding out the top five. Angry Birds was also on the list with a respectable 27.3%. So why do men love Google Maps so much? Here’s my guess: It’s not that we (men) don’t like asking for directions, it’s that we just don’t trust other breathing humans to point us in the right ones. As a guy with an awful (and I do mean awful) sense of direction, I’d much rather bury my head in my phone and poke through a bunch of menus than cave in and ask a stranger on the street to send me towards a place he or she’s never heard of. I’m not speaking for all guys; it’s just a hunch. Google’s all-knowing omniscience > all. (Unless my girlfriend’s there—she’s impatient and likes talking to people.) The most used app by women? Facebook sits at the number one spot with a commanding 81% lead, followed by Gmail (73.4%), Google Maps (71.9%), Google Search (71.3%) and YouTube (48.7%). Here are the full results: So why do women love checking Facebook so much? (It’s nearly an 8% jump between first place and second place.) I have no idea, but I’m guessing you do.
Netflix on Android: It’s been a rocky, pot hole-filled road until recently. It wasn’t until May of this year that streaming video features made it to certain Android handsets and, even then, the initial number of supported devices sat at just five. Netflix promised to “aggressively” add to that list, and we now find that the app is compatible with all Android devices running versions 2.2 and 2.3 of the operating system. That ought to cover about 80% of Android smartphone users, says PCWorld. Universal support for new Android tablets running version 3.0 (Honeycomb) is still a bit of an ordeal—some tablets have it, some don’t—so it’d be nice to see that situation get worked out next. Getting everything running smoothly on Android phones is a good step, however, as those devices represent a sizable chunk of the smartphone market.
An update to the Android Market is on the way, with less sickly pea green than ever before. The Android Market redesign is meant to emphasize movies and books alongside apps and games. Each type of media gets its own fat rectangle on the Market home page, with extra blocks for featured content on the sides and on top. It looks like a major improvement over the existing Android Market, which used a rotating carousel to display featured apps — backed by large swaths of the aforementioned sickly green. (LIST: Top 20 Must-Have Android Apps) All sections of the Market have their own slot for featured content, and Google is adding a staff picks section to help users find decent apps. Navigation is also improved, letting users swipe through various sorting options, such as top paid, top free and top grossing apps. Google desperately needed to redesign the Android Market, and not just to accommodate movies and books. A damning study from IHS Screen Digest showed that Android accounted for only 4.7 percent of revenue among all mobile app stores in 2010, compared to 82.7 percent for Apple’s App Store. Even Blackberry’s App World and Nokia’s Ovi Store pulled in more revenue than the Android Market, the report said. Premium app developers will continue to favor Apple’s platform unless Google can address that gap. Overhauling the Android Market is a start. But what the Android Market still needs is a way to reduce friction on paid purchases. Whereas Apple was clever enough to require credit card information from users at the outset, Google doesn’t ask for any payment information unless the user tries to buy a paid app. That creates a mental barrier for users, leading to the stigma that Android users don’t buy apps. The Android Market is a big enough attraction now that Google could demand credit card information when the user first accesses the Market. Either way, I’m glad the Android Market is getting a new look. It’s rolling out to phones with Android 2.2 and higher

At last, Skype’s Android app supports video calling, but it’s only available on four phones for now. Video calling works over Wi-Fi and 3G, and is supported on the HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro and Google Nexus S. The common thread among these phones is that they all run Android 2.3, but a Skype representative told me that the company’s working to make video chat available on a wider range of devices shortly after launch. In theory, Skype video chat for Android is a big deal. While other video calling services such as Qik and Fring can connect Android users with other smartphones, Skype is unique in that it also offers desktop software, allowing phone users and PC users to video chat together. (READ: Fring Brings Four-Way Video Chat to iPhone, Android) The only other service with this feature is Google’s own video chat, but it’s only available on Android versions 2.3 and higher. An Android app called Vtok (also available for iPhone) promises to bring Google video calling to earlier versions of Android, but it’s also not supported on all devices. So right now, the video chat situation on Android devices is kind of messy, with older versions of the Android software left behind by Google and many phones and tablets unsupported by Skype. We’ve seen this kind of fragmentation in other apps recently: Netflix and Hulu Plus both launched on a limited number of handsets. On the bright side, eventually most Android phones will run version 2.3-or-higher, Skype will support more handsets, and these video chat fragmentation issues should work themselves out. For now, however, calling a PC-bound friend with video can still be a big headache.
AT&T is reportedly doing the right thing by allowing Android phone users to install apps from outside the Android Market. Starting today, an update will enable non-Market app installation — also known as sideloading — on the HTC Inspire 4G, HTC Aria and Samsung Captivate, Android Central reports. All future Android phones will also have this capability, starting with Samsung’s Infuse 4G. There’s no word on whether Motorola’s relatively new Atrix 4G will get this capability. Sideloading may be a geeky feature, but it’s one of Android’s main perks, allowing users to install whatever they want on their phones. That could include Amazon’s Appstore for Android, a porn store or individual apps that were booted from the Android Market, such as Grooveshark. You can even use sideloading to install unauthorized tethering apps and avoid extra monthly charges, although AT&T is cracking down on this practice by sending passive-aggressive warning letters to customers. In the past, AT&T has explained its prohibition of sideloading as a security concern. Confining users to the Android Market “minimizes the risk of malicious apps harming customers and provides more protection to the customer’s private data stored on the phone,” the company said last June. Why AT&T has changed its mind is unclear. It could be a move to appease Amazon, which launched its own Android app store in March, or it could be an attempt to make the carrier look more open as it aims to acquire T-Mobile. Or maybe AT&T just wants to make its nerdier customers happy. In any case, you can enable sideloading on Android phones by going to Settings, then Applications, then checking the box next to “Unknown Sources.” It’s not as scary as it sounds, honest.
