Move over McDonald’s, Angry Birds has you beat by a factor of eight: Developer Rovio says the popular bird-flinging, pig-pummeling mobile game for iPhone and Android mobiles has been downloaded over 500 million times across all platforms since it launched not quite two years ago. Popping up my iPhone 4′s App Store, there it is, holding the number two spot with 34,681 ratings (the number one “paid” game at the moment is Zombieville USA 2). Just below it, in fourth place, Angry Birds Seasons, and you only need drop to 12th place to find Angry Birds Rio. The free version of Angry Birds is ranked 20th (under “free” games), with only 19,424 ratings, suggesting more players are downloading the paid than freebie version. (LIST: Top 10 Must-Have iPhone Games) Angry Birds costs just $0.99, but even if we guesstimate something like half of those 500 million downloads were paid, you’d be talking $250 million in revenue for a game that cost an estimated €100,000 ($137,690 USD) to make. Rovio claims Angry Birds is now “one of the most downloaded games in the history of gaming.” That sounds about right—I can’t think of another, from any genre or gaming era, that comes close. More Rovio fun facts: Angry Birds has been played for a total of 200,000 years globally, and clocks in at 300 million minutes of play time daily. More than 266 billion levels have been played, 400 billion birds launched and upwards of 44 billion stars collected (I have no idea how Rovio comes up with this data). Next up: Angry Birds for the Nokia Asha 300 and 303 S40 “feature phones,” which Rovio says “will bring Angry Birds entertainment to completely new emerging mobile markets.” Rovio’s also poised to launch the world’s first Angry Birds retail shop in Helsinki. Indeed, the company’s merchandizing arm has grown long—Rovio says it’s shipped over 10 million Angry Birds toys worldwide. Yep, honest-to-goodness plush toys, too. I mean, just look at that silly apoplectic bird in the shot up top.
Given their meteoric success on mobile devices so far, it’s no surprise that Rovio’s Angry Birds franchise is headed for bigger things. But it’s possible that no one really expected those bigger things to mean a giant version of the game played by crowds at a Formula One racetrack this weekend. The big-screen version of the game, which will debut at the Formula One racetrack in Singapore, is a co-creation of Rovio, Finnish start-up Uplause Ltd., and Singapore Telecommunications, and will rely on the volume of the audience to decide just how far back the catapult is pulled before the birds launch their larger-than-life attacks on those greedy green pigs. (MORE: Is Disney Interested in ‘Angry Birds’?) Rovio’s Peter Vesterbacka described the new incarnation of the game as “a great opportunity [for fans] to form a strong emotional connection with the characters,” apparently realizing that the larger the screen, the stronger the emotional connection for most people. For those unable to make it to Singapore this weekend, don’t worry; if this weekend’s game is successful, Rovio plans to take the big screen Birds on tour to large-scale rock concerts and sporting events in the near future.
With cookbooks, toys and a rumored movie spinning off from their successful Angry Birds app, some have thought of Rovio as a wannabe Disney. But if rumors are true, Disney might actually be looking at the app maker with a view to helping it on its way to world domination. (More: Moichendising! ‘Angry Birds’ Cookbook Coming Soon) Bloomberg is reporting that Rovio is in talks to receive funding that would push the value of the company to $1.2 billion, although just who the company is talking to remains a mystery; all that’s been disclosed is that it’s an entertainment company, and apparently, one so impressive that Rovio is listening, despite turning down similar offers in the past. Disney—which has a history of partnering with synergistic media companies with exploitable IP (Muppets, Pixar, Marvel)—isn’t the only potentially interested party, however; other names being thrown around include Electronic Arts, News Corp. and, oddly enough, Farmville owners Zynga. Unsurprisingly, all named parties declined to comment when asked about any possible negotiations. Personally, I’m holding out for a Disney deal, just so my dream “Angry Birds team up with the Angel to fight Spider-Ham” movie can finally become a reality.
You heard that right, folks. The must-have app for every smartphone platform, Angry Birds, is finally available for Windows Phone 7. Not only is it available, but it hit the Windows Phone Marketplace “a few hours ahead of schedule,” according to the Windows Phone Blog. “Ahead of schedule” being a relative term, of course. When Microsoft fired up the marketing machine for its new Windows Phone platform last fall, the Angry Birds logo was prominently featured alongside the first batch of apps on the Windows Phone splash page. Rovio, the company behind Angry Birds, took to Twitter, saying that they hadn’t committed to making the game for Windows Phone 7 and that, “Microsoft put the Angry Birds icon on their site without our permission.” (LIST: 50 Windows Phone 7 Apps to Get You Started) That was back on October 10th, 2010. The game first appeared on the iPhone back in December of 2009. Today is June 29th, 2011. So the game hit the Windows Phone Marketplace “ahead of schedule” in that it went up a few hours before it was scheduled to become available today. All that stuff aside, I think the Windows Phone platform has a lot of promise and the more high-profile apps like Angry Birds that get added, the more likely that Windows Phone 7 devices will find their way into the hands of consumers. Now we just need Scrabble, too. Angry Birds is available in the Windows Phone Marketplace for $3—there’s a free trial available as well.
For months, you’ve been trying to help those Angry Birds protect their eggs from the mysteriously green pigs, and now you’ll finally get to find out why they wanted those eggs in the first place with the Angry Birds Cookbook. Oh, you only think that I’m joking. Not content with parlaying the uber-successful app into animated adventures, board games and full-scale Conan appearances, Rovio is continuing to take full advantage of the Angry Birds brand with a self-published cookbook for all the family, to be released as both a traditional print book and as a self-contained app. It’s part of Rovio’s new strategy—to be all about the branding. As the company’s marketing and business development guru, Peter Vesterbacka, told an audience at the Open Mobile Summit in London yesterday, “We have sold three million of these [holding up his plush-toy-keychain] and we have made a lot of money. We can make a lot of money selling toys and t-shirts… It’s more than games.” The cookbook will be released in “the coming weeks,” via app stores and online outlets like Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Somewhat worryingly, it will be based around egg recipes. Those poor birds.
Interesting. See that thing up there? That’s Roku. It’s a nice, inexpensive, internet-connected box that you hook up to your TV. Once it’s set up, you can use it to stream movies and TV shows from the likes of Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Amazon, plus music and photos from Pandora and Flickr, respectively. But the company has just announced a partnership with Rovio to bring the wildly popular series of Angry Birds games to Roku boxes. “Angry Birds is the most popular and fastest growing casual game yet it has been trapped on mobile devices. We believe there’s a huge market for games like these on the TV,” said Roku founder Anthony Wood. I won’t argue with you, Mr. Wood. Now it’s not exactly rocket science to get a game like Angry Birds working on a box that’s powerful enough to stream high-definition video from the internet, but it’ll be interesting to see how the control scheme gets worked out. For the mobile versions of the game, you’ve got a touchscreen—pretty straightforward—and for the desktop versions, you click and hold your mouse button, drag your bird back in the slingshot doodad, and then release. How will that be translated to work with Roku’s remote control? One possible option is that Roku could work out a feature that’d allow you to control the box with your smartphone. Those remote-over-Wi-Fi apps are commonplace with TV boxes nowadays, but not everyone has a smartphone. The other option might be to use the remote’s 4-way control pad to shimmy your bird into position and, once it’s there, hit the OK button to let it fly. Then maybe you’d hit the OK button again once the bird’s in the air to perform those special tricks. There we go. Problem solved. Additional details of the partnership will be made available in the next few weeks, but Roku has said it “will offer Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio video games; launch an Angry Birds video channel featuring Angry Birds animated shorts; and sell

Apparently, there’s a science to naming your mobile app if you want it to be a hit. Dutch analytics company Distimo has taken a look at the keywords that tend to appear in a lot of successful apps in the Apple, BlackBerry and Android app stores, as well as the Nokia Ovi Store and Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. The top 25 have some you may have expected (“Sexy,” of course; also, “App” and “Widget”), but also some that you may not have (“Wallpaper”?). Here they are: wallpaper live guide news theme ebook clock travel app sexy game world dictionary map calculator radio love girls widget english hot puzzle football pocket city You’ll be happy to know that my new app “Sexy Hot Pocket Puzzle Radio City” launches very soon. I hope it’ll be a big success. Of course, there are other ways for an app to become a success. For example, there’s always the option of it just being good, although even that can affect the language of app stores. For example, Distimo tracked the growth of the words “Angry” and “Birds” following the release of the ridiculously popular game in December 2009, and found that, while “Birds” was already a popular enough term that its usage only grew six times as a result of the game’s success, use of the word “Angry” in app titles went up by a staggering 20 times. Maybe I should call my app “Angry Sexy Hot Pocket Puzzle Radio City”…
