Remember Zuck’s “awesome” announcement that had lots of us expecting Facebook to announce their official iPad app? If you don’t, that’s okay: The Skype integration was seen by lots of people as decidedly ho-hum. In case you haven’t heard yet (with a hat tip to MG Siegler at TechCrunch), the sleek new iPad app was found in a line of code in the Facebook iPhone app earlier today. It’s not official-official yet, and Facebook could very well make changes between now and the product’s official release, but it’s definitely accessible if you’re comfortable navigating iffy jailbreak territory. Twitter user @aeroechelon, an engineering student, was first to spot the hiccup (so major kudos to him), and since then it’s caused something of a frenzy in the tech ecosystem. After spending a bit of time with the iPad app this morning, I’ll say this: It’s a rather lovely browsing experience. Here’s a quick rundown. (PHOTOS: Life Inside Facebook Headquarters) The Good This isn’t a simple rehashing of the iPhone’s icon-driven interface. Far from it. The Facebook homescreen takes advantage of the iPad’s screen real estate and adds a new left-sided navigation column that can be tucked away. Your News Feed, Messages, Events, Places, Friends list, Photos and groups are all present and neatly arranged. When you swipe right, the navigation column disappears and Facebook’s new chat feature appears on the right-hand side. Your screen is never overcrowded as you’ll only have two columns accessible at any given time. There’s been a lot of talk recently about social feeds and the amount of distracting noise a user comes across when using them. Digg’s Kevin Rose and tech blog guru Robert Scoble have had a lengthy public discourse over what service weeds out noise best. The new Facebook app tackles the noise problem with a very usable Feed Filter button in the upper right hand corner. You can navigate between Top News, Most Recent, your Limited Profile, Photos (what the iPad is really best at) and other filters you can set up yourself. It’s definitely acknowledging the

The official Google+ iPhone app is finally available for download in the iTunes App Store. You can access it here. Per the app’s description: “Google+ for mobile makes sharing the right things with the right people a lot simpler. Huddle lets you send super-fast messages to the people you care about most. And no matter where you are, the stream lets you stay in the loop about what your friends are sharing and where they’re checking in.” For now, you’ll have to download the app via your computer with iTunes to install it onto your iPhone, though it should hit the phone-based App Store soon, too. The mobile web version of Google+ has already seen its fair share of praise, but a dedicated app will add new layers of functionality. You’ll have access to your Stream and Circles as well as your “Huddle,” which they’re touting as “super-fast group messaging for Circles.” (MORE: Why Has Google+ in China Already Disappeared?) Go ahead and give it a go. Let us know what you think down below. More to come from us after we spend some time with it. Chris Gayomali is a writer-reporter at TIME.
Soon-to-be parents no longer have to endure the trouble of sifting through a seemingly endless book of baby names in search of the perfect one. It’s much, much easier to just let unborn kids choose anyway. That way, they won’t be filled with a lifetime of resentment because they were named “Like” after Facebook or something. Believe it or not, your still-developing child is more than capable of picking its own name before the big birth, and Kick to Pick – a new 99-cent iPhone app – will help your bundle of joy choose the right one. The app randomly generates thousands of baby names. All parents have to do is launch the generator, place the phone on the baby bump, and wait for the little guy – or gal – to give a big kick. The app monitors the baby’s movements, and any large kick detected will stop the generator and reveal what the baby has chosen. (More on Time.com: See the best iPhone apps for mothers) But no worries, parents. You’re not relinquishing all baby-naming power. Parents can narrow down the thousands of names by gender or create a list of favorites. They can also just simply reject the name the generator spits out – though that might hurt the baby’s feelings a wee bit. “The idea for Kick to Pick came from a discussion about baby’s choices and the fact they had no influence over the name they go onto keep for the rest of their lives,” said Nathan Parks, the creator of the app, in a statement. Thus, if your kid picks a weird name and then complains down the road, you can be sure that it wasn’t your fault.
Sonar is kind of like a good party host: It introduces you to whoever else is in the room by leveraging what you have in common. According to their mission statement: “Sonar is a mobile application that helps you learn about and connect with likeminded people nearby.” It works by geotracking your current location à la Foursquare check-ins and aggregating public information from your social networks (Facebook, Twitter, the afore mentioned Foursquare, etc.). Say you’re at a conference and want to introduce yourself to that funny/handsome/smart tech writer alone in the corner tearing his napkin into little balls. Sonar comes into play by showing that you follow me—er, him—on Twitter. From there, you can do things like send a message over to introduce yourself, or even get an idea of the kinds of things you’d have in common (like accounts you follow and Facebook interests) as long as he’s opted-in to the service. Sonar’s essence is in facilitating real life interaction by giving you something to talk about. But the key really is “opting-in,” because it communicates the receptiveness necessary for something like this to work. It’s kind of like wearing a sandwich board that says, “Let’s be friends,” but more techy. And less weird. At the TechCrunch Disrupt conference yesterday, Founder Bret Martin said, “It’s simple—you open up Sonar and we tell you that the guy sitting across from you is Facebook friends with your college roommate, the dude by the jukebox is a VC that you follow on Twitter, and the cute girl by the bar also likes Arcade Fire and Hemingway.” It’s a smart, easy to understand concept, and one of the more practical applications of the hyperlocal craze we’ve seen. But we’ll see if it reaches the threshold for usership it’ll need to actually thrive. Until then: Cool? Creepy? Little bit of both? (via TechCrunch) Addendum 6/1/11: A Sonar rep wrote us: “One of the key points about Sonar is that it works even if you are the only one using the app. It aggregates information from the public

All joking aside, unexploded landmines pose serious, serious threats to post-war communities. In late 2010, it was reported at a UN Council meeting that 3,956 people died due to undetected explosives, without even taking into account the countless injuries and limbs lost in the aftermath. What’s more is they debilitate entire communities, paralyzing its citizens out of fear. That’s where this new iPhone app, PETALS (pattern enhancement tool for assisting landmine sensing) comes in. In conflict areas, landmines are tracked with old fashioned metal detectors before being dug up. According to PETALS: “[I]n current practice, operators must stop and inspect every contact that could be a landmine, which slows down the demining process significantly. Both these challenges are exacerbated by newer landmines with minimal metallic content.” The PETALS app seeks to minimize the potential for human error by taking out as much of the guesswork as it possibly can. Rather than relying on a deminer’s memory and retention of the metallic patterns in the ground, the app sketches things out, helping them determine two pivotal questions: 1) Is there a mine present? and 2) Where is the mine located? An admirable and much needed undertaking, if there ever was one. Read more about the Harvard-based project here.
Coexistence is possible. The newest version of Qik lets Android video call iPhone users – and vice versa. Now let’s all hold hands and sing around the campfire. The latest version of the apps works across Android (as long as you’re running software 2.1 to 2.3.3), all iPhones, the iPad2, and every iPod touch with a camera. The new app also introduces video mail. So if you’re keen on doing some video mingling with people on the other side of the ‘hood, you better grab it now. Qik is dropping the price of their iOS app back down to gratis for a limited time. After June 1st, you’ll have to shell out three George Washingtons (fine, three dollars). The video mail is also only free until June 1st, but prepared to pony up for a subscription afterwards. Fring also offers video calling – in fact they have just launched a beta of group video calling – but it looks like it may be easier to talk to your best friend without jumping off the iPhone (or Android) bridge.
The Obama presidency is proving to be the hippest, baddest and most connected administration in recent memory. Facebook town halls, YouTube announcements all color Obama’s strategy in keeping citizens informed – and it’s now complete with an Android app to complement the iPhone version. The official White House app for Android does exactly what the iOS version does for iPhones: users get alerts directly from the White House, see behind-the-scenes multimedia (look, Obama doing a slam dunk!), and read the latest news from the blog or briefing room. iPhone users also get a nice update as well. Mobile users will be able to get an alert whenever President Obama is about to speak. They will also be able to watch the ensuing speech live. Just gotta watch that next State of the Union? The White House iPhone app has had over 400,000 downloads (okay, so it’s no Angry Birds), but tech-savvy, politically minded citizens can do their part by staying informed.
David Lynch says you’ll never really watch a movie on your phone, but what about full-on 24/7 ESPN sports events? ESPN already breaks off bits of its live shows for occasional phone-based palm-gawking via an app drably dubbed ESPN Mobile TV. So what do you call the app that lets you simply stream ESPN live? WatchESPN, of course, and it’s available now, gratis, for iPods, iPhones, and iPads (with plans to expand to other phones and tablets–presumably Android OS-based–at some point soon). Not just ESPN live, either, but the main channel plus ESPN2, broadband-only ESPN3, and college-angled ESPNU. You authenticate by entering your cable subscription details. The catch, and you knew there’d be one, is that you have to subscribe to either Verizon FIOS, Time Warner cable, or Bright House, though we hear ESPN plans to expand beyond those soon. So yeah, kind of a buzzkill. We live in an app-centric world. ESPN apparently wants us to live in an app-shackled-to-cable one. The timing’s right: We’ve got the Masters, Major League Baseball, and the NBA playoffs in the offing, but alas, the app’s only piggybacking off the converted. I don’t have a home cable package because I stream Netflix and Hulu instead. I couldn’t get Verizon FIOS in my area, so for Internet access I’m using AT&T U-Verse–basically the same thing, though WatchESPN’s a no-go on AT&T for ESPN3 streaming. Even if I wanted to pay ESPN extra, say a monthly fee for the app, as I’d expect to, it’s not an option. That’s too bad, because selling ESPN as a multi-medium service (instead of one that’s subsidiary to cable) is the only way ESPN’s getting any money from me.

Chances are you haven’t been waiting 201 days to find out who was calling under a blocked number. TrapCall, an iPhone app that lets you do that, did spend that long waiting for Apple to approve the nifty functionality, though. World beware, the app’s been unleashed. TrapCall is an app that lets phone users pretty much unmasks anyone who’s calling behind a blocked number: enemies, ex-girlfriends, creditors… the list goes on. It’s a free download in the iTunes store, but you actually have to pay $5 a month for the service. The whole thing won’t actually let you discover who it is though, and then let you pick up. Instead, users hit their power button twice to “decline” the call. The service then sends the call back to your phone, along with name and address via text. The service will can transcribe your voicemails, letting you send them through text messages, e-mail or push. You’ll also be able to receive alerts when your phone is turned off, or give blacklisted callers preset messages. Google Voice, anyone? There’s no way to see how long it will survive in the app store: chances are since the app spent some time in Apple’s holding cell, it’ll probably be monitored to see how things fare. Still, if you’re getting weird phone calls, it might be a good way to figure out who’s a pesky telemarketer or see which of your friends are just being overly paranoid.
Tired of sifting through endless droves of tweets that pop up on your feed? If you really don’t care to follow certain people, then let a new Twitter app get rid of them for you–on your Twitter account, that is. The Grim Tweeper – created by Wesley Zhao, Tess Rinearson, Dan Shipper and Ajay Mehta – allows you to manage your follow list in three easy steps: 1. You’ll be showed one person – or “tweep” – that you’re currently following on Twitter. View the person’s stats – number of followers, number following, number of tweets a day and if they follow you – before deciding his or her fate. 2. Press either the green “keep” button or the red “kill” button to continue following or to unfollow, respectively. 3. Continue doing the same thing until you’re only following those who matter. You can continually view the number of people you’ve axed through the Tweeper. And for those who want to ratchet up the fun, the Tweeper even has its own Twitter: “Muahahah! I’m here, tweeps. If you follow far too many useless people, let me help you get rid of them,” it tweeted today. It’s a simple enough idea that livens up quashing Twitter spam. Question is, who’s on your chopping block next? More on TIME.com: How To Tweet Like Barack Obama (Or Anyone Else, For That Matter) How Many People are Really Tweeting? If You Use Twitter, You’re Probably One of These Dots

You know you want to watch live TV on your iPad, because what else are you going to watch live on your iPad, right? Well now you can, courtesy an app from Time Warner Cable Inc. — full disclosure, Time Warner Cable was divested from our parent company, Time Warner, in 2009 – that’ll allow your totable Apple slate with its glossy too-pretty-for-just-browsing screen to tap some 30 cable channels, including Comedy Central, Fox News, and MTV. But here’s the kicker: You can’t leave. The house, I mean. You know, where your TV already is. Because the app only works if you connect through your Time Warner cable modem. Which makes it sort of like wearing an ankle bracelet, only one that attaches to your hands, and plays stuff like “The Daily Show” and “Futurama.” The reason for that’s not as Machiavellian as it sounds. Time Warner Cable just isn’t authorized to let you watch stuff off their grid. That’s a different set of (presumably pricey) licensing agreements entirely. Not that it wouldn’t be a nifty feature, you know, say you’re suddenly up for some “Skins” or “My Super Sweet 16″ around the campfire. Where do you sign up? As noted, you’ll have to be a Time Warner Cable subscriber, and we’re talking both TV and Internet service (alas, the app’s not a twofer). You’ll also need an iPad, because the company hasn’t said whether the app works on an iPhone or iPod Touch. Not that you’d ever watch TV or a movie on your phone. Assuming you meet those requirements, all you need is the free app, which you can download from the App Store today, March 15. That said, the list of won’t-haves might surprise you. You can’t use the tablet as a remote, something other services (like DirecTV) already support. You can’t set it to record shows like a DVR, including no pausing or fast-forwarding through commercials. And shows aren’t on-demand, so you’re stuck browsing whatever’s already running. And it’s not like the competition’s sitting on its hands.

IKEA may be the go-to place for affordably-priced furniture, but did you know that it’s now branching out into virtual shelving, as well? IKEA sites in Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic are offering customers an app that lets them organize their desktop using the Swedish company’s Expedit shelving unit. The app comes from Hungarian agency Laboratory Ideas, which says that it’s just like the real thing: Just like Ikea’s furniture, the Ikea e-Folder set has to be assembled by you: it consists of a background picture with an Expedit storage unit and an icon set made of Ikea’s very own organisers. Once you set it up, you can put order to the chaos on your desktop. The app can be downloaded here, here or here. You may have to come up with the random extra parts and confusing instructions yourself. And ‘don’t text while you’re driving’ apps have come before, but State Farm’s recently updated Pocket Agent app for Android is a little different then those who’ve come before it. The On the Move widget within the app automagically replies to texts while you’re driving and can be customized to your tastes. You’ll have to launch the app before heading out, though. You can also use the app when you’re about to go into a meeting, grabbing dinner or watching a movie. It’s pretty versatile and you don’t have to be a driver to use the thing. It’s free, too.
Today, TIME rolled out its picks for 2010′s 50 Best Websites. This year’s crop proves itself a quintessential part of the Web, whether you’re researching, shopping or simply just browsing. But, as more and more users take their Internet usage on the road, we’ve become increasingly in tuned to the way our favorite sites translate to mobile use.
With yesterday’s release of Kick-Ass on DVD and Blu-ray, we called on Chris Brown, president and CEO of customized digital media company Metabeam, to walk us through the Blu-ray disc dual-screen experience, Metamenu – controllable by your iPhone or Android-platform smartphone. Download the free Metamenu app and your phone will automatically syncs to your BD Live player, allowing you to control menus and special features. For example, if you’re watching a film with the Metamenu companion in room full of friends, you could be listening to subtitles in Spanish while the audio plays in English for the rest of the room. Pretty neat, right? It gets better. (More on Techland: Kick-Ass Director Matthew Vaughn On Extended Scenes & The Greatness Of Hit Girl) We’ve got a Blu-ray copy of Kick-Ass to give away. If you’re interested, comment below and tell us what you’d like to see available for home entertainment in the next ten years. (Me: Cloud-based music library, please!) We’ll pick a winner by the end of day tomorrow, but make sure you’ve got a way to play a Blu-ray disc at home. Allie Townsend: Tell me a bit about the dual-screen capabilities for the Kick-Ass Blu-ray disc. Chris Brown: What we’re doing is creating the next generation of interface. People who have an iPhone or an Android device and are using it as a control center for their media when they’re out and about, can now use that same device as a smart remote control for their Blu-ray experience. In the case of Kick-Ass, we worked directly with the producers to expand the canvas to look at the experience of the big screen, but also of the little screens. It’s possible for 5 or 6 people in the same room to all enjoy Kick-Ass in a different way. Maybe one of them is listening to subtitles in a different language audio track or the director’s commentary with headphones on. Maybe one is watching the subtitles on their screen or browsing for similar content or discography of the actors.

GE has come up with an iPhone app that’s supposed to help you decide which bulbs will set a particular mood for a particular room or space that you may or may not inhabit. Snap a photo of said room using your iPhone and swipe one way or the other to establish the right moooood and GE will tell you which light bulbs to purchase. The MoodCam app is available now for free from the App Store.
Monday, April 5, 2010 Today in Techland: Peter got mail from Iron Man. (No, really.) Doug prepped for baseball season. (You’ve got to see these baseball gizmos.) And me, I spent all day re-watching Red Letter Media’s scathing review of Attack of the Clones. Hilarious. But just in case that’s not enough … Here’s what else is going on in nerd news around the Web: WTF, George Lucas?: According the The Hollywood Repoter, Lucas is prepping to rape the Star Wars franchise again by turning it into a … comedy series. (WHAT?) Lucas is teaming with Seth Green (Austin Powers) who said this to explain himself: “The ‘Star Wars’ universe is so dense and rich; it’s crazy to think that there aren’t normal, mundane everyday problems in a world so well-defined. And it’s even crazier to think of what those problems might be, since it’s all set in a galaxy far, far away. What do these characters do when they’re not overthrowing Empires?” Yeah, I’m sure Chewy’s stand up is downright knee-slappin’… Gee, if only some brilliant comedian had produced an amazing Star Wars-esque comdey in the 80s. (SPACEBALLS!) Then we might be saved from this. (SPACEBALLS!) Hmm. No, nothing comes to mind… (SPACEBALLS!) Multitasking?: Apple is holding a special event on April 8th to reveal iPhone OS 4.0. We’re crossing our fingers that they’ll be announcing a ton of features we’ve been asking for over the last few years. It’s Time To Share: Microsoft is holding a super secret event on April 12th in San Francisco. What could it be? Courier? Pink?
