While we’d certainly like to see an iPad Mini with a Retina display this year, months of rumors have produced no compelling evidence that it’s going to happen. If anything, we’re less certain about the prospect than ever in light of several conflicting reports. Thanks for nothing, rumor mill! The latest scuttlebutt is a puzzler, courtesy of Richard Shim at NPD DisplaySearch (via CNet and Business Insider). Shim says Apple is on track to ship an iPad Mini with a Retina display this fall, but with the same A5 processor as the current model. A more powerful version, he said, will follow in the first quarter of 2014. Unless Apple has pulled off some miraculous engineering, in which a two year-old processor can power quadruple the pixels at no apparent cost to overall performance, NPD’s story doesn’t add up. At a resolution of 2048-by-1536, a Retina-display iPad Mini would have four times as many pixels as the non-Retina model. It takes more power to handle all those pixels, which is why Apple introduced the A5x chip in the third-generation iPad last year. Speaking to Business Insider, Shim had no explanation for why Apple might use an A5 chip instead, or how that would even work. At this point, I’d usually turn to other rumors to figure out some sort of consensus — an Apple tea leaf triangulation, if you will — but consensus on the next iPad Mini is hard to find. Here’s a sampling of other recent rumors with conflicting information: In December, Chinese website Zol.com.cn said a Retina iPad Mini would soon begin mass production, with an A6X processor. Contradicting that report, Chinese-language site, MyDrivers.com, claimed that small-scale production had begun on a Retina iPad Mini 2, but with an A5X processor. In March, Chinese website CNYes said the Retina-equipped Mini was on track to launch in the fall, with no word on processing power. iMore, a fairly reliable Apple rumor source, claimed that the next iPads could debut “as soon as April.” Didn’t happen. The site cautioned that a Retina

The odds are looking good that Apple will ditch the textured, bubbly look of its iOS software in favor of something more modern. Citing “multiple people who have either seen or have been briefed” on iOS 7, 9to5Mac reports that the software for iPhones and iPads will sport a flatter look: The new interface is said to be ‘very, very flat,’ according to one source. Another person said that the interface loses all signs of gloss, shine, and skeuomorphism seen across current and past versions of iOS. Another source framed the new OS as having a level of ‘flatness’ approaching recent releases of Microsoft’s Windows Phone ‘Metro’ [user interface]. We’ve heard a similar story before. Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported that Jonathan Ive, Apple’s senior vice president of industrial design, was pushing for a flatter look across iOS. A few questions come to mind: Given that both Windows Phone and Android have pushed toward modern software aesthetics, this seems like a rare instance where Apple is following the pack. Can Apple flatten out iOS in a way that seems fresh and original? How big of a shift will this be for users? Will user-interface elements work differently or is this strictly an aesthetic change? To what extent will the changes affect third-party apps, and how much work will they have to do to flatten out their own software? We’ll likely find out on June 10, when Apple kicks off its Worldwide Developers Conference. The company is promising an “in-depth look at what’s next in iOS and OS X” during the event.

Reuters is reporting that Apple CEO Tim Cook recently met with Jimmy Iovine, famed music producer and Beats CEO, to chat about “a potential partnership involving Beats’ planned music-streaming service.” Iovine’s company is currently working on a service called Project Daisy; Beats acquired streaming music service MOG last July, a move seen as an attempt to augment Beats’ line of headphones and speakers developed by Iovine and rap legend Dr. Dre. Reuters quotes three anonymous sources as saying the meeting was “informational” but the article adds that Apple “has been widely reported to be considering a music-streaming service to complement iTunes, the largest repository of music for sale.” If Apple were to launch a streaming music service, it certainly wouldn’t be the first to do so, but the company’s enormous base of iTunes users and iTunes’ tight integration with Apple’s hardware products would likely help such a service quickly scale to compete with the likes of Spotify and similar competitors. This next bit is pure speculation on my part, so please indulge me. I see a couple of possible scenarios here: If Apple were to launch its own streaming music service that exclusively leveraged whatever Beats is working on, and assuming the service would be priced like other services, we might expect to see a $5-per-month option that featured the ability to stream music to the iTunes desktop software, and a $10-per-month option that featured the ability to download tracks for offline listening and for use on mobile devices. I’d be surprised to see the ability to stream or download tracks to anything other than iTunes or Apple hardware products, however, with the exception of Windows PCs that run the iTunes software. I wouldn’t expect that you’d be able to use this service with non-Apple mobile devices, in other words, and people want to listen to their music while in places other than in front of their computers, believe it or not. Though Apple has a large base of iPhone, iPod and iPad owners, this tactic would still limit the

Release dates for new Apple products have been tougher to predict lately, with the end of the yearly refresh for new iPads and the ever-shifting launch window of new iPhones. Fortunately, Rene Ritchie at iMore has some unnamed sources who claim to know what’s up: iMore has learned that Apple is planning the release of the iPhone 5S for this summer, currently for August. Next generation iPads, presumably the iPad 5 and potentially the iPad mini 2, may also debut as soon as this April. iMore has a developed a solid track record for Apple rumors, and the timing doesn’t seem too far-fetched for the iPhone, at least. However, even Ritchie seems a bit skeptical about the chances of new iPads next month. Apple just launched its fourth-generation iPad and the iPad Mini in October, and a Retina display for the latter would probably take more time to implement. The iPhone 5S is rumored to have a similar design to the iPhone 5, but with an improved camera and possibly a built-in fingerprint sensor. The next full-sized iPad is expected to be much thinner and lighter than its predecessors, with a design that hews closer to the iPad Mini. iPhone 5S planned for August, next iPads may debut as soon as April [iMore.com]

A much slimmer iPad, an iPad Mini with a Retina display and an iPhone with a built-in fingerprint reader could all be on tap for 2013, according to one industry analyst. As MacRumors reports, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has published a research report that tries to predict Apple‘s entire 2013 product lineup. Although analysts tend to have terrible track records with Apple rumors, Kuo is a notable exception. Let’s do a quick look at some of his past forecasts: Kuo’s January 2011 predictions about the iPad 2, including the dual-core processor, camera specs and screen resolution turned out mostly accurate. (He was off by 0.2 GHz on the clock speed of the A5 chip.) Apple’s iPhone 5 achieved a thickness of under 8 mm, thanks to in-cell touch technology and the use of a metal back plate instead of glass, just as Kuo predicted five months before launch. As Kuo expected, Apple discontinued the 17-inch MacBook Pro last year and redesigned its iMacs, but without Retina displays. That’s a pretty good track record. So let’s hear out Kuo’s predictions for 2013: The iPhone 5S will be similar to its predecessor, but with a faster processor, a better camera with smart LED flash and a fingerprint reader built into the home button, which would reduce the need for passwords everywhere. Keep in mind that Apple acquired AuthenTec, a maker of fingerprint sensor technology, last year. A cheaper iPhone for prepaid and emerging markets–a popular rumor these days–would be a lot like the iPhone 5, but with a plastic enclosure, available in six colors. The next iPad will be considerably slimmer and lighter. That’d make sense given that Apple had to add bulk to its third-generation iPad to accommodate a Retina display. Kuo expects the iPad Mini to get a Retina display as well this year. Non-Retina display MacBook Pros will meet their maker this year, as Apple moves to an all-Retina lineup at lower prices than before. The MacBook Air line won’t get Retina displays this year, Kuo believes. Their main improvement will be

The rumor mill is buzzing about what might be next for Apple’s iPhone, and it’s not all stuff we’ve heard before. In addition to the usual chatter about NFC, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek thinks the next iPhone–or “iPhone 5S” as he calls it–will have a “super HD” display, and will come in six to eight colors, just like the new iPod Touch. Misek believes the phone will launch in June, breaking with Apple’s recent fall release schedule. (More on that shortly.) Before we go any further, allow me to put up a big fat disclaimer: When it comes to Apple rumors, Misek has an iffy track record. His bad predictions include a T-Mobile iPhone in 2011 (he’ll be off by two years), an Apple-made Netflix rival in 2011 (hasn’t happened), a Verizon iPhone in 2010 (off by a year) and an Apple television late this year (not happening). I should know better than to recirculate this stuff. But! Apple did launch its iPod Touch in eight colors. And colorful phones are kind of an in-thing right now, with handsets like the Windows Phone 8x, Lumia 920 and Galaxy S III coming in hues beyond white, silver and gray. The idea of more color options for the iPhone seems plausible, not that it matters, since you’re going to wrap your iPhone in a bulky, multicolored case anyway. Two iPhones Per Year? The other, more credible and semi-related bit of rumor-mongering comes from Asymco analyst Horace Dediu, who makes the case for Apple switching to a twice-a-year product cycle for new iPhones and iPads. Among Dediu’s reasons for thinking so: All of Apple’s major products were updated this fall, which leaves a huge gap in the first half of next year; a spring launch would shake up an iPhone product cycle so predictable that consumers hold off on buying iPhones until the fall (a problem that Apple has acknowledged); and capital expenditures seem to be outpacing production. Also, Apple did launch new 9.7-inch iPads in March and November of this year, which could be
