Google’s search app for iPhone just got a big upgrade, with improved voice search that supports natural-language questions, just like Apple’s Siri. I tried it on my iPhone 5, and it’s pretty slick. When I asked, “What movies are playing tonight?” the app almost immediately spit back a search-results page with local movie listings on top. Siri stuttered on the same question, first digesting the words, then showing some text that said it was looking into it, then finally showing a neatly formatted list of films. Google’s app can answer a healthy range of questions too. It can tell you the weather, flight status, sports scores and stocks. It knows trivia, translates languages, does math and performs unit conversions. It can suggest places to eat and give the dates of upcoming events. In terms of answering questions, it’s a pretty close rival to Siri, and it’s often faster to respond. Yet I don’t see myself using it on the iPhone 5. That’s partly due to the nature of Apple’s iOS software. On the iPhone, you can’t add widgets or otherwise tell third-party apps to do things directly from the home screen. That means you can’t run a Google voice search without opening the app and then tapping the search button. It’s not a huge issue, but it’s an extra step or two compared with using Siri, which can launch from anywhere. The bigger issue is that Google’s app doesn’t do everything that Siri does. While the app can look up information using Google’s Knowledge Graph, it can’t set reminders, make restaurant reservations, create calendar appointments or pen messages in Gmail. It can’t remind me of upcoming appointments or events or warn me about traffic. And for directions — the one thing I use voice search for the most — Google’s app doesn’t lead to Apple Maps but to its own Web app, which doesn’t do turn-by-turn voice guidance. (And for all the griping about Apple Maps, it works fine in my neck of the woods.) So yes, essentially I’d love

Before smartphones, it seemed as though everyone was building mobile versions of their websites. This even happened again for a short while with smartphones until app stores arrived. Now it seems more attention is being paid to making apps than making versions of websites optimized for smartphones screens. On the horizon, however, I see a world where both native apps and web apps will coexist.

I've learned that I'm not a great sleeper. I need at least a half hour to doze off, and I'm likely to stir from my slumber a few times or more during the night, which in turn prevents me from getting enough deep sleep.
Yesterday, mobile darling Instagram launched its Android app and snared one million downloads in 24 hours. The photo-based social juggernaut already boasts 30 million users who pour 5 million photos into the network every day – and with half of all smartphone users in the U.S. now using Android, don't expect Instagram's growth to stall. Instead, it'll be how the company handles its growth spurt that could affect the future of its success.

I aired some grievances with Spotify's mobile app just before the service launched in the United States last July, and the company's PR department quickly scolded me. The software I tried was just a preview based on the U.K. service, they said, so it wasn't nice for me to write a full review. Nonetheless, Spotify's mobile apps haven't gotten much better since then. Let's revisit what's wrong.

For the casual tech user, the value of “location sharing” has thus far referred chiefly to a blinking blue dot on Google Maps and the ability to “check in” via Foursquare. In both instances, though, the location equation has left many frustrated — and even exasperated. When off Wi-Fi, Google Maps is slow and cumbersome, and it drains your battery faster than just about any other application. As for Foursquare, I’ve never quite understood the proposition. Sure, you can unlock badges, and earn a free prize from businesses in exchange for effectively uploading your consumption data, but it is unwieldy, time consuming and profoundly narcissistic. After all, the assumption here is that the world is dying to know what you’re doing This Very Second. Over the last three years at South By Southwest (see TIME’s full 2012 SXSW coverage), a vast majority of the conversations I’ve had with developers and entrepreneurs have concerned how to use Facebook’s social graph, and the location implications of Foursquare, to more meaningful effect. And this past Saturday, I was part of one of the most inspiring brainstorms yet. Ahead of her Sunday keynote in Austin, Amber Case sat down with TIME for a detailed discussion of how her new, closely-monitored venture Geoloqi has the potential to use geo-fencing to redefine the possibilities of location-based intelligence. It was the most eye-opening, paradigm-shifting conversation I’ve had in Austin thus far this year, and we will be writing more about her concepts – and posting our full video conversation with Case – later on TIME.com. (MORE: The 50 Best iPhone Apps of 2012) To boil down Case’s grand vision: Imagine a world in which location-based applications were used less to merely identify location than to dynamically coordinate one’s personal data and agenda, making the accessing of information easier and more efficient. A self-proclaimed cyborg anthropologist (see below), Case says she spends a great deal of time observing and considering how technology is redefining human behavior. And she, like so many of us, looked at a program like

Last year, it used the event to announce that its Android Market had accrued an impressive 150,000 apps.
