When I attended Macworld|iWorld last Thursday and Friday, the show floor was bustling with attendees. And in terms of bustle-per-square-foot, the busiest booth I saw probably belonged to Nomad Brush, which makes brushes that can be used for digital painting on the iPad and other tablets. The company provided me with one for review.

Last week the tech world was shocked by the sudden announcement of Steve Job’s departure from Apple. I mean, here’s man who left indelible marks in nearly every corner of the industry, from computers, to mp3 players, to tablets and more. So it’s no surprise that Apple fans were deeply affected by the news. Some penned blogs wishing him the best of health. Others were more elegiac with their tone, sounding at times as if writing an obituary. (He’s alive, guys!) (PHOTOS: The Long, Extraordinary Career of Steve Jobs) But one Apple enthusiast, Joseph Tame, decided to do something more creative…something outside the box. As a runner and tech enthusiast, he decided to map out an Apple logo using RunKeeper, a GPS-enabled iPhone app. In the process, he trotted out 13-miles, or about the length of a half-marathon. “Having an iPhone really has changed my life here in Tokyo,” he writes in his blog. “It means I can go anywhere without getting lost, I have all my data with me at all times, I’m potentially in touch with thousands of friends and family members around the world at all times, and I have access to any information I might need to do what I need to do. Whilst I’m sure this would make a big difference back home in the UK, here in Japan it’s like a lifeline (even more so now it can warn me when an earthquake is about to hit).” The run itself took him two hours, traveling at about a 7:30 per mile pace. Head over to his “Art of Running” blog to see more of his work created via RunKeeper. Other pieces include Hello Kitty, the Google+ logo and, topping them all, a pretty convincing baby elephant. It sure beats anything I’ve done in MS Paint. LIST: The Five Weirdest Pieces from MoMA’s New Tech Exhibit Chris Gayomali is a reporter at TIME. Find him on Twitter at @chrigz, on Facebook, or on Google+.
Long before the Smithsonian or the Supreme Court got into the mix, one kick-ass gallery show was letting everybody know about the artfulness of video games. The “iam8Bit” exhibitions have taken icons like Mario, Pac-Man and Sonic and handed them over to artists who’d radically interpret the characters and their worlds. (MORE: Top Game Designers Say What They’d Put Into the Smithsonian) The shows have long been staples of the E3 and GDC gatherings, illustrating that the connections and experiences that games deliver are just as durable and open to interpretation as others for pop-cultural production. After three years off, the newest iam8Bit show looks to take that idea and blow it up even bigger than before. “SUPER iam8Bit” opens in two short weeks in Los Angeles and will feature almost 100 artists from around the world, including Scott Belcastro, Mike Mitchell (famous for the Conan O’Brien “I’m With Coco” posters) and Sky Burchard. The SUPER exhibition will also feature the world’s largest arcade cabinet in celebration of Galaga’s 30th Anniversary. If you’re not in L.A. on August 11th when the show opens, fret not. There’ll be a limited edition art book that will collect the works on display as well as other paintings and creation featured in past exhibitions.
A website that maps crowd-sourced data in a disaster. A digital character that giggles when you poke his belly. And a device that allows men to menstruate. Those are just a few of the items that will go on display at Talk To Me, the Museum of Modern Art’s latest tech-focused show in New York City this Sunday. Featuring roughly 200 objects from artists and designers all over the world (all of them laden with individual QR codes), the exhibit is all about communication — of the sort that occurs among humans, but also the types that take place between man and machine. (PHOTOS: Cinema’s Most Memorable Robots) “We’ve become really communicative animals,” says Paola Antonelli, the MoMA curator behind the show. “Social networks are a symptom of that. This is something that designers can take into account when designing a new object or an interface design technology.” The exhibit, therefore, includes a wide gamut of interactive tech, from a wall-sized installation of Talking Carl, the totally adorbz, touch-sensitive smartphone character, to Ushahidi, a website that aggregates and maps crowd-sourced data in a crisis. The latter has been used to pinpoint danger zones in the aftermath of violent elections in Kenya and the earthquake in Haiti. The show also features a number of totally bizarro pieces — such as the menstruation machine mentioned above. Antonelli gives us a preview of some of the exhibit’s freakier objects.

We at Techland hold firmly that video game designers are some of today’s best artists. But we also realize that mainstream art snobs sometimes dismiss the genre as not real art. That’s why we love the work of Thibault Brunet, a photographer who’s capturing and retouching screenshots to capture the landscapes and portraits found in today’s top games. His latest works can be found in the Aperture Foundation’s new book, Regeneration 2: Tomorrows Photographers Today. The gallery also features a sampling of Brunet’s works from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City in 2008. The pieces were matted and framed like traditional art photography, challenging preconceived notions of photographic art. Brunet said walks through virtual universes inspired his work, and that he explored the spaces he believed most players ignored because they weren’t crucial to game play, say the outskirts of player-vs-player maps and industrialized zones. “These games are inspired by American popular, historical and political culture,” he told TIME Lightbox. “They involve getting through missions–murder, blackmail, theft and escape, enemy liquidation, bombing or even the occupation of territories such as Afghanistan. I chose to explore these games against the natural will of my avatars, the one that the usual player would use. I chose to do it as a photographer.” To see more of his art, head over to TIME Lightbox. More on TIME.com: L.A.
If, like me, you spend far too much of your life wondering what life is like for your dog(s), then a new exhibition of canine photography may go partway towards providing some much-needed answers. And, yes, that’s “canine photography” as in “photos taken by dogs.” Well, kind of. Dogtography: A Dog’s Eye View Of New York is an exhibition of photographs taken around New York City by digital cameras attached to dog collars that took shots at random intervals that opens tomorrow at the Hendershot Gallery at 195 Chrystie Street in New York. The show benefits local animal shelter and adoption service Mighty Mutts, and is the brainchild of ad agency McCann Erickson New York. Obviously, dogs are welcome to the show (There’ll be an opening reception tomorrow evening with some of the puppy photogs present), although who knows what they’ll make of the work. And if this doesn’t answer the question of what life is like for your canine companion, well, there’s always Inside Of A Dog. More on Techland: Level Up!
One of the longstanding promises of the Internet–of the last century’s worth of technology, really–is that the cultural heritage of the world will be accessible to everyone in their homes. Today, the global museum has taken another step forward with Google Art Project. An ingenious application of Google’s Street View and Picasa tools, it allows web browsers to wander the halls of 17 museums around the world (New York City’s MoMA, Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, and others). Some particularly significant artworks in each of the museums (about a thousand total, although more will apparently follow) can be viewed straight-on, in ultra-high resolution. In some cases, that just means a very tight close-up view; others are so detailed that you can make out the grain of individual brushstrokes–a closer view than you’d ever be able to get in person. There’s also explanatory text for the individually viewable works. Google Art Project isn’t without its startup glitches and gaps; the overall selection is still pretty small (the site represents a deeply Eurocentric idea of “fine art”), it can be frustrating to navigate museum halls with the Street View tool that presents everything through a tilted lens, and it’s particularly annoying to see certain images blurred out (“for reasons pertaining to copyrights,” the FAQ explains). The nannyish chorus announcing that it’s “no substitute for seeing the real thing” is likely to grow irritating very quickly, too. But even in-person visitors to the Tate Britain wouldn’t be able to get the kind of hyperdetailed vision Google Art Project offers of Chris Ofili’s extraordinary No Woman, No Cry, for instance. If you like museums and don’t happen to have your own private jet, prepare to spend a good long while drinking this site in. More on TIME.com: Landscape Paintings: The Monster Remix R.I.P.
Brick artist Nathan Sawaya is showing off a clever new tattoo on his blog, LEGO imprints permanently etched into his thumb. Six years ago, Sawaya quit the corporate world to pursue art. Now, his LEGO sculptures are commissioned all over the world. (We chatted with Sawaya a little about his work here.) “Each day I am pressing down on the bumps of each brick to make sure there is a tight fit,” he wrote about his new ink. “And if I press real hard, the bumps leave little marks on myfingers and thumb.
So, video games’ most prominent gadfly returns to the subject of interactive entertainment this morning. But, wait! Before you roll your eyes, you should know this: Roger Ebert admits he was wrong. Yep. The Chicago Sun-Times’ longtime movie critic wrote the following in a new blog post: I was a fool for mentioning video games in the first place. I would never express an opinion on a movie I hadn’t seen. Yet I declared as an axiom that video games can never be Art. I still believe this, but I should never have said so. Some opinions are best kept to yourself. … I should not have written that entry without being more familiar with the actual experience of video games. He then goes on to detail how his colleague Steve Prokopy endeavored to get a PS3 and a copy of Flower in order for him to play it. Ebert’s honest about his own hemming and hawing, basically saying he just doesn’t want to play the durn thing. Sadly, Ebert’s evasiness seems to bear out the prevailing “old man” theory, which posits that he just doesn’t want to play today’s video games. But that’s his prerogative. The most important thing here is that he acknowledges that he shouldn’t have talked trash about a medium he wasn’t willing to engage with. (I basically said the same thing when I wrote a rebuttal to Ebert a few months ago and provided examples of games that echo off of other forms of art.) Will this be the end of Ebert’s fulminating about video games? Maybe. I personally hope the next chapter in the saga is Ebert turning on that PS3 and playing through Flower. And then Portal. And then Bioshock. And then… [Sidenote: Because he references “games ≠ art” conversations he’s had with Clive Barker, screenshots of the Clive Barker’s Jericho game accompany the blog post. That game, while decent as I recall, is not exactly an exemplar of the video game form. I kinda feel like he’s taking subliminal potshots at Barker.

Aside from her Google.com display-for-a-day, Melton has won a $15,000 college scholarship, a netbook computer and a $25,000 technology grant for a new computer lab at her school. (Judges from this year’s contest included DC’s Jim Lee, Disney’s Andy Harkness and Pixar’s Bob Pauley.) “I chose this doodle because the rainforest is in danger and it is not fair to the plants and animals. Google’s annual Doodle 4 Google contest is upon us, with this year’s them set as “If I could do anything I would…” and we were happy to see so many aspiring nerds among us. (Chemists! Comic artists! Time travelers!) Google received more than 33,000 entries from students in grades K-12 from 20,000 different schools and has since narrowed down the entries to the top 40 via a panel of judges that includes the likes of DC’s Jim Lee, Disney’s Andy Harkness and Pixar’s Bob Pauley.
Oh man, this Painting Cell Phone Jammer is perfect for so many things. Hate cell phones? Painting Cell Phone Jammer. Love beautiful artwork? Painting Cell Phone Jammer. Teenage children bankrupting you via their cell phone bill? Painting Cell Phone Jammer. You get the idea. I love beautiful boat-inspired artwork and pranks, so that’s my reason for getting this. I also love $150 and can’t stand to part with it, so that’s why I’m not actually getting this. But if you get it, let us all know how well it works. According to the product description, it can jam “GSM, CDMA, DCS, PHS, and 3G signals – separately or all at once!” It’s got an 80 meter (250+ feet) radius and comes with a remote control. via Nerd Approved

Here’s the deal with Roger Ebert. He’s a critic I respect who’s paid his dues and earned the right to hold forth on cinema, writing and any number of artistic disciplines. But, he’s talking trash about video games again. It’s painfully clear that he hasn’t played video games in a long time (the clip is from 1993) and won’t play them now. And that’s a shame for two reasons. One, he’s missing out on a type of entertainment experience that’s only going to become more vibrant and unpredictable in the future. For a guy who’s taken to Twitter, for example, and will pull out his OG (original geek) Compuserve and MCI mail credentials, the arms-crossed “don’t wanna” stance seems rather short-sighted. The second reason that Ebert’s steadfast refusal to come to grips with games as a medium is a shame is that it’s just bad critical form. That’s far more problematic than just missing out on something you’ve already decided that you’re not going to like. (And, isn’t art determined by how a piece of work makes you feel, both on the part of the creator and the viewer?) A critic’s job is to apply the lens of his or her knowledge and experience to a creative endeavor. You have to engage with the thing you’re criticizing. You don’t get to do arm’s length unless you’ve already been up to it in your elbows.

I was lucky enough to chat with artist Nathan Sawaya last week, right in time for his New York gallery debut. Sawaya is the type of guy you admire just for having the guts to quit his job as a corporate lawyer six years ago to become an artist who does incredible work with children’s toys. While we talked, Sawaya told me that his passion stemmed further than just fine art and LEGOs. “I meet families who tell me that this is their first time inside a fine art gallery, and if I can open up that dialogue, then I’m happy. Kids go to museums and look at statues and they might be inspired, but it’s not like they can go home and start sculpting some limestone. I’m using things they have at home.” The exhibition, “BRICK BY BRICK: The LEGO Brick Sculpture of Nathan Sawaya,” will be showing in the Chelsea Agora Gallery until April 13, 2010.The gallery is located at 530 West 25th St., near 10th Avenue. The gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday, 11am – 6pm. And for those of you not the New York City area, more of Sawaya’s work is currently touring museums around the country. Currently, they’re resting in Scranton, Penn.’s Everhart Museum until May 2. Check his Web site for the full list of tour stops.
