Here’s an interesting fact that came out of the recent debate over gun control: Thanks to the U.S. Congress, the government has been unable to fully research firearm safety for the last 16 years. In 1996, as Reuters tells it, the National Rifle Association pressured lawmakers into cutting $2.6 million worth of Centers for Disease Control funding, which was being used for firearms research. Congress later restored the funds, but with a restriction on any research that “may be used to advocate or promote gun control.” Apparently the NRA had been dismissing past studies as “anti-gun propaganda,” but it’s hard to see the group as anything but afraid of what we might learn through more research. Now that President Obama wants Congress to fund research into violent video games, I’m sad to see a parallel among some of my fellow gamers and game journalists, who think the government should just leave games alone. “Dear Mr. President, We are not ignorant about the relationship between media including videogames and violence. Studies show there isn’t one,” Garnett Lee, Editorial Director of GameFly Media, wrote on Twitter. “No matter how many studies show no links, it’ll never be seen as a reason to not fund another one,” Wired Editor Chris Kohler wrote. Sorry, but I can’t join in on this collective freak out. For as defensive as I am about video games, and my right to enjoy them like any other form of speech, I draw the line at declaring we don’t need any more knowledge. True, there isn’t much strong evidence to prove that violent video games make children violent in the real world. That’s why, in 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to let California outlaw the sale of violent games to minors. The state didn’t have enough evidence to prove that violent video games cause violence — certainly not more than any other media — so just like the movie and music industries, the video game industry gets to regulate itself. It uses its own ratings system, and retailers take it upon themselves

If there's anything remarkable about President Obama's new "Consumer Privacy Bill of Rights," it's that it hasn't raised much of a ruckus in Silicon Valley. Internet giants such as Google and others aren't raising hell; in fact, they've happily enlisted themselves in the fight for privacy by agreeing to implement "Do Not Track" buttons.

Here’s how serious President Obama is about making jobs the subject on everyone’s lips: His next Town Hall meeting—to discuss job creation, obviously—will be hosted by LinkedIn. The event will be held on Monday, September 26, and LinkedIn users are invited to visit the site and submit questions for the evening. According to CEO Jeff Weiner, the meeting is “an invitation from the White House to people from across the country for an open exchange on [one] of our most pressing objectives as a nation: the creation of jobs and economic opportunity.” This will be Obama’s second virtual Town Hall in recent months; in June, he held one using Twitter, which itself followed an April visit to the headquarters of Facebook to discuss the economy. At this rate, we should expect to see him using a giant catapult against unsteady structures created by grinning green pigs somewhere around March of next year. In fact, you might be able to make the argument that she’s more interested in the lives of strangers than anyone else, as she’s currently following 692,318 people on Twitter (as I type these words), more than any other account on the social media service. The next most friendly Twitterer? U.S. President Barack Obama.
Now there will be no question about who is going to be the “mayor” of the White House. President Barack Obama has just made the official leap to Foursquare − and he is probably going to be checking in at more places than Carmen Sandiego. According to the White House, Obama’s Foursquare account will feature the places he visits and what he did there, along with historical information about the stop and more. Starting with the President’s tour across the Midwest, he’ll be checking in as he discusses ways to strengthen the economy across the region. He kicked off the service by checking in at Cannon Falls, Minnesota, where he met with a crowd of 500 people. (MORE: Foursquare Update Brings ‘Some Early-Access Love’ to Android) Obama already has some 7,000+ followers, but that number will probably grow quickly. After all, now you can really see what it’s like to be a jet-setting president with a full schedule that’s sure to include some interesting places. Time to start living vicariously, but without the hassle of actually traveling – we’ll let ‘Bam do it for us.
When President Barack Obama asked Twitter to join him for a virtual town hall meeting by tweeting him questions using the hashtag #AskObama, it’s possible he was expecting a few people to join him. What he got was an impressive 169,395 tweets, and enough new followers that he broke the 9 million barrier for the first time. Of the nearly 170,000 questions, the four biggest topics were jobs (18,957 tweets), the budget (15,000 tweets), taxes (14,777 tweets) and education (8,833 tweets). According to stats provided by TwitSprout, the majority of the #AskObama tweets were questions (around 64%, with the rest promotion or retweets), with most tweets coming from the East Coast (34%). (PHOTOS: Michelle Obama’s Defining Fashion Moments) One user, @WashingtonDCTea, seemed particularly excited about the event, sending over 173 tweets to the president. Sadly, the President didn’t answer all 169,395 tweets during the event; 18 were selected by Twitter’s Executive Chairman Jack Dorsey and then asked face-to-face, before the replies were summarized by @whitehouse for the users’ edification. Maybe next time, he can set aside a few more hours to answer everyone individually. After all, it’s not like he’s got anything more pressing to do, right…?
Hackers have been celebrating July 4th in their own unique kind of way by taking control of the Fox News Politics Twitter feed and using it declare the death of President Barack Obama. Rest assured, the President remains alive and well. The only dead thing here is Fox News Politics’ Twitter password. The hacker (or hackers) took a while to build up steam with their stream of misinformation. The first few messages they posted began with “@BarackObama”, meaning they’d only appear in the timelines of people who follow Fox News and the Presidential account. Later messages changed tactics and used a hashtag. Many people saw through the hoax immediately, but you know what Twitter is like: the hashtag took on a life of its own, and became a meme within minutes. The hoax had added weight thanks to its origin from a professional news organisation, which helped it speed its way on via retweets. At the time of writing, the fake posts were still visible on the compromised Twitter feed, between two and three hours after they’d been posted. The lessons are, as always: Don’t believe everything you read on the internet, don’t believe everything you read on the internet, make sure you have a strong unique password for your Twitter account, and don’t believe everything you read on the internet. UPDATE: Fox News confirmed the hack in a brief statement this morning.
When is a retweet not a retweet? When the original tweet never existed – and if that sounds like common sense, it seems that no-one explained that to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which yesterday created fake retweets from President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, former Governor of Virginia Tim Kaine and other prominent democrats to link to a non-existent website outlining the Democratic Party’s plan for the nation. (MORE: Obama Is Actually Writing His Own Tweets Now) Over the course of an hour, the official NRSC Twitter account sent out six fake retweeted messages from Obama, Reid, Kaine, Jon Tester, Claire McCaskill and the Senate Democratic Policy and Communications Committee linking to new Republican joke website Democrat’s Plan for America, which is nothing more than a blank page (because the Democratic Party has no plan for America, in case the “joke” was too subtle for you). The fake messages played to Republican cliches about each Democrat, with Obama’s reading “My budget failed 0-97 but wait till you see @SenateDems budget – BO.” Unsurprisingly, the reaction to this was one of anger and disbelief, summed up in a comment from Fox News’ Andy Levy: “What the hell is wrong with you? How do you not realize it’s unethical to make up fake tweets from people?” It’s also against “the Twitter Rules,” as laid out as part of the site’s Terms of Service, which clearly state that users “may not impersonate others through the Twitter service in a manner that does or is intended to mislead, confuse, or deceive others.” A day after the fake retweets have been sent out, they’re still available to view, and neither Twitter nor the NRSC have publicly commented on the subject. I wonder which will come first: The apology, or the deletion of the NRSC Twitter account? MORE: New York Is the World Capital of Twitter?
This is what happens when Techland goes to the comic book store: we end up talking about what we picked up. This week, Evan Narcisse, Graeme McMillan and Douglas Wolk discuss Archie #616–the Obama/Palin milkshake special. EVAN: I haven’t picked up an Archie comic in probably close to a decade, so my response to this one has been as much about the experience of reading it as the story it contains. I’m pretty sure that the Alex Simmons who wrote this issue is the same one who did that great BlackJack miniseries with Jamal Igle about a black soldier-of-fortune a few years back. He’s also done some DC work. The first thing that struck me was how clean everything in the book was. By and large, the panel layouts and the flow of the dialogue balloons were easy to follow. It’s mundane, I know, but Archie’s still the gateway for a lot of young readers. The well-scrubbed vibe also extends to the artwork, too, done in that famous Archie house style. But, looking at the house ads, that style still seems to allow room for a bit of individualism. (More on TIME.com: The Comic Book Club: “Brightest Day” and “Bring the Thunder”) I wound up liking the book overall–and c’mon, it’s kinda hard not to like a breezy story about a high school election–but Simmons really impressed me with how savvy some of the plot beats here were. Having Archie’s indecision (arguably, the key trait of a character who’s waffled between two girlfriends for decades) be a political liability was funny and spot-on. The photo ops with Obama and Palin were essentially tween-age primers on media manipulation and celebrity infatuation. Then, you get the competitive response, the brinksmanship and the fallout. Along the way, the political discourse of Riverdale High–and, no I can’t believe I just typed that either–degrades to something resembling the yell-and-stomp stuff that we see in the news cycle. It’s a little smarter than it needs to be. DOUGLAS: Oh man, now I get to come in and

In his commencement speech at Hampton University in Virginia, President Barack Obama set his sights on modern media and a handful of vessels that deliver the news. “You’re coming of age in a 24/7 media environment that bombards us with all kinds of content and exposes us to all kinds of arguments, some of which don’t always rank that high on the truth meter,” he told the students. “And with iPods and iPads, and Xboxes and PlayStations — none of which I know how to work — information becomes a distraction, a diversion, a form of entertainment, rather than a tool of empowerment, rather than the means of emancipation. So all of this is not only putting pressure on you; it’s putting new pressure on our country and on our democracy.” He’s right about one thing; the amount of chatter that bubbles up on the Internet can be overwhelming. I also have to agree that the gadgets we write about on a daily basis here at Techland are a distraction. But the iPad shouldn’t really be in the same camp as an Xbox or iPod. It’s a repository for vast amounts of information; it’s the Internet in a more portable form. Sure, I play my fair share of games on the thing but I’m swiping through news apps more often than not. But how is it putting a strain on democracy? How is it that the information I glean on a daily basis not empowering me? If anything, it’s made me more of a skeptic. Was President Obama just throwing out those buzzwords to get folks attention?
