Review: Fresh Stories Propel ‘Star Wars: The Old Republic’

How do you make that familiar galaxy far, far away fresh again? Take it back to an even longer time ago. Way back. Well before Vader, Luke, Leia, Yoda and especially Jar Jar. More than 3,000 years before, in fact. That's the setting for BioWare's engaging "Star Wars: The Old Republic," a multiplayer online game for PCs that debuted last month.

BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republic arrives today, December 20, squaring off with Blizzard’s seven-year-old 800-pound gorilla, World of Warcraft. While we’re waiting for the dust to settle, here’s a list of intergalactic odds and ends to enhance your time spent in a galaxy far, far away.

‘Mass Effect 3′ Delayed Until Next Year

The final installment of BioWare’s sprawling space opera apparently needs a bit more time in hyperspace, as the EA-held dev studio announced that Mass Effect 3 won’t be out until the first quarter of 2012.

Call it the Mass Storage Effect. When comparing the PlayStation 3 vs. the Xbox, one thing developers talk about is the difference in space with the consoles’ disc formats. The DVD format’s a bit long in the tooth, and the usable space on the average Xbox 360 dual-layer disc usually tops out at around 6.8 [...]

Critics seem to love Dragon Age II, awarding it high scores and spouting superlatives by the dozens. Techland’s own Evan Narcisse gave it a 9.7 out of 10, calling it a “heavyweight champion,” and he doesn’t even like fantasy games.

‘Dragon Age 2′ Review: Heavyweight Champion

It’s time to reveal one of the failings of my geek CV: Fantasy leaves me cold, at least the sort of high fantasy descended from Tolkien. Maybe it was the high school English teacher who pushed The Hobbit too hard on me or the friends who insisted I’d love George R.R. Martin or Piers Anthony. [...]

Fans of super-successful web series The Guild know Felicia Day best as Cyd/Codex, the shy MMO-addicted violinist who has trouble navigating relationships IRL. She’s also portrayed monster-slayer-in-training Vi on the late, lamented Buffy the Vampire Slayer and teamed up with that series’ creator Joss Whedon to play Penny on Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, helping the [...]

Awards Season: Is ‘Mass Effect 2′ a Better Game than ‘Red Dead Redemption’?

Last night, at video games’ equivalent to the Oscars, ‘Red Dead Redemption’ racked up the most wins, but ‘Mass Effect 2′ walked away with Game of the Year. It came down to epic space opera vs. lonesome Western drama at the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences’ annual Interactive Achievement Awards ceremony, and Commander Shepard [...]
