Research in Motion, the company behind the BlackBerry smart phone, has made some spectacularly wrongheaded moves in the six years since Apple announced its first iPhone. It said the iPhone wasn’t a game changer and claimed that apps don’t matter. It’s grafted new features like touch input onto its aging operating system in ways that didn’t please anyone. It’s wasted time it didn’t really have to spare on a misbegotten tablet. But in April 2010, RIM did something deeply sensible: it acquired QNX, the maker of a highly regarded, industrial-strength operating system used for applications such as car electronics and medical devices. It then set out to build all-new BlackBerry phones built on top of QNX’s plumbing — a project so ambitious that it wasn’t the least bit startling that it took years and involved multiple delays. And now, at long last, that 2010 decision has a shot at paying off. Last week, RIM began its press event in New York City by announcing news that was simultaneously shocking and logical: it was changing its name to BlackBerry, bringing its corporate branding in line with its much more famous product. Then it unveiled the first two phones running BlackBerry 10, its new QNX-based platform. The BlackBerry Z10 is a full-touch model that goes on sale in some countries this month; it’ll show up in the U.S. on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon in March. (Only Verizon has announced a price so far: $199 with a two-year contract.) The BlackBerry Q10, which sports the iconic BlackBerry physical QWERTY keyboard, will arrive later this year. I’ve spent the past few days with a Z10 review unit provided by BlackBerry. The phone isn’t the sort of reality-defying, epoch-shifting landmark BlackBerry would have needed to silence its critics and lure teeming masses of skeptical iPhone and Android fans. It needs more high-profile apps, additional features to set it apart from other smart phones and fewer gnarly bugs. But you know what? In multiple ways, it’s already better than I expected it to be. Behind the scenes, BlackBerry has

BlackBerry put on a pretty good show on Wednesday when it revealed the Z10 and the Q10, its first new smartphones in a year and a half. The demos were crisp, and the new BlackBerry 10 software looked clever. At the very least, it seems that BlackBerry has finally joined the modern smartphone era. But despite my interest in BlackBerry’s new phones, I’m still worried about the future of the platform, and not merely because it’s been off the radar for a while. Looking at what BlackBerry did and didn’t announce, and what reviewers are saying about the product, gives me a few big reasons for concern: Apps, Both Present and Future BlackBerry deserves credit for having lots of apps out of the gate–more than 70,000, the company says–including some important ones like Twitter, Facebook, Angry Birds and The New York Times. Still, there are some big names missing from the list, including Netflix, YouTube, Spotify and Instagram. You can’t expect a new platform to have everything right away, though, so I don’t want to judge BlackBerry’s current app count too harshly. It’s the future that I’m really worried about. What happens when the next Instagram comes out, and becomes a sensation on the iPhone and Android? Will BlackBerry be like Windows Phone–that is, just an afterthought in the minds of up-and-coming app developers? The good news is that Android apps are relatively easy to port to BlackBerry 10 (in fact, roughly 40 percent of those 70,000 launch apps are simple ports, ReadWrite notes), so RIM just has to convince developers to make a relatively small effort. We’ll see if they do. Never Neglect Maps The consensus among BlackBerry Z10 reviews is that its Maps app is subpar. The Verge complained about inaccurate data, and said the software couldn’t reliably find local businesses. CNet bemoaned a lack of features, such as walking directions, transit maps and street views. Apparently the software doesn’t even let you jump into the Maps app by tapping on an address or map in the web browser.

The company formerly known as Research in Motion–and now simply known as BlackBerry–came out swinging at a press event Wednesday, announcing two new BlackBerry phones and showing off a dramatic software overhaul dubbed BlackBerry 10. BlackBerry hopes to stand out from the iPhone and Android by making it easier to keep tabs on e-mail, messages and social media, and by building in powerful features for business users. But the company’s also trying to attract consumers with its own store for music and movies, and an app catalog that will include more than 70,000 apps at launch. New BlackBerry Phones The BlackBerry Z10 is a full touchscreen phone, with a 4.2-inch, 1280-by-768 resolution display (that’s a richer pixel density than the iPhone, at 356 pixels per inch), a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front camera, slots for MicroSD, MicroUSB and MicroHDMI and support for near-field communications. It has a textured back surface, and curves gently around the edge, supposedly making it easy to hold and use with one hand. The BlackBerry Q10 is meant to appease old-school users with a built-in physical keyboard. It has a 3.1-inch, 720-by-720 display, a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 2 GB of RAM, 16 GB of storage and a MicroSD slot. Its back panel is a “glass weave” material that BlackBerry says is lighter and stronger than plastic, and exclusive to its hardware. BlackBerry 10 The new hardware is just window dressing for BlackBerry 10, a new operating system that’s a complete break from the crusty old BlackBerry OS of yesteryear. One of the big goals in BlackBerry 10 is to keep all kinds of communications–including e-mail, messages, Facebook and Twitter–within easy reach. At any time, users can do a small swipe from the left side of the screen to peek at notifications, or swipe all the way over to see all their messages in one place, in an area called “BlackBerry Hub.” From this area, users can write messages, respond to friend

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion hasn’t given up the fight just yet. The company says it’s still on track to launch BlackBerry 10 in early 2013, and has scheduled a launch event for January 30. Well, several events, actually. RIM says it will hold simultaneous launches around the world, where it will show off its new operating system and announce the first two BlackBerry 10 smartphones, along with details on availability. What do we know about BlackBerry 10? From the company’s various developer conferences over the last several months, we’re able to piece together an idea of what RIM’s next generation of BlackBerry devices will be like. All About the Flow RIM refers to the BlackBerry 10 interface as “Flow,” due to the way that users can swipe between applications without tapping any buttons. Swipe upwards when the phone is locked, for instance, and you slide into a screen of “Active Frames,” showing thumbnail images of your recent apps. These frames can contain useful information such as calendar appointments, BBM status updates and weather forecasts, so they’re similar to the Live Tiles in Windows Phone and widgets in Android. (MORE: BlackBerry 10: Good Enough Won’t Be Anywhere Near Good Enough) BlackBerry 10 also puts an emphasis on communications. When you’re inside an app, you can swipe up from the bottom bezel to peek at notifications, then keep swiping over to the right to jump into a unified inbox, called BlackBerry Hub. This inbox brings e-mails, messages, missed calls, calendar events and social network updates into a single list. RIM has a video that shows how this works: A New Take on Software Keyboards Although the physical keyboard is BlackBerry’s claim to fame, RIM is trying to change that in BlackBerry 10. Full touchscreen BlackBerry phones will have software keyboards with predictive text. As the user types, suggested words appear above every next possible letter, so after typing “L-E,” the word “learned” appears above “A” and the word “left” appears above “F.” To enter the word, users must swipe upwards from the next
