Steve Jobs has passed away, just 56 years old, and with his passing, we’ve come to the end of not just an era but the life of one of the computer industry’s brightest luminaries—and, some might say, its foremost mavericks. Jobs had stepped down as CEO of Apple slightly more than a month ago, handing the leadership baton to Tim Cook and accepting a position as chairman of Apple’s board. “I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know,” wrote Jobs at the time in his resignation letter. “Unfortunately, that day has come.” (MORE: Technology’s Great Reinventor: Steve Jobs (1955–2011)) Jobs had been on medical leave since January 17, 2011 for unknown reasons, but he’d battled pancreatic cancer for years, appearing to win that battle in 2004, but eventually undergoing a liver transplant in April 2009 and taking periodic leaves of absence from Apple for medical reasons thereafter. Several had speculated his health had taken a turn for the worse, but Jobs was deeply protective of his private life—it’s still not clear what he ultimately died from. “We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Jobs passed away today,” said Apple’s Board of Directors in a statement Wednesday evening. “Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve.” The company replaced pictures of newly announced products on its website with a black and white photo of jobs beside his birth and death years. The Steve Jobs most people think of today is probably the one clad in trademark black turtlenecks and bluejeans, walking around a stage and touting some of the computer industry’s most striking products: the iPod, the iMac, the iPhone, the iPad. Any product with an “i” in front of it owes a debt to what Jobs accomplished in his latter years with the company he originally cofounded 35

At one point during today’s Apple “let’s talk iPhone” dog and pony show, all the live blogs paused and I wondered whether Apple had unveiled its super-secret Cupertino mothership and blasted off. But no, today turned out to be all about the iPhone 4S, iCloud, iOS 5 and an incredibly clever-sounding voice recognition app dubbed “Siri.” Fledgling CEO Tim Cook—in it seems permanently for Steve Jobs—revealed that Apple’s latest mobile operating system as well as online storage and synchronization service will go live October 12. That’s more or less what we expected (the last rumor I heard put the release date a couple days later, October 14). (MORE: Apple Announces iPhone 4S: Old Design, New Specs, Siri Assistant) So that’s it then, look for iOS-the-fifth (downloadable) and iCloud (subscribe-able) one week from tomorrow. It’ll be a free update for the iPhone 4, 3GS, both the original iPad and iPad 2, and both the third and fourth generation iPod Touch. We already know all there is to know about iOS 5, thanks to prior (and very thorough) Apple events, like WWDC, but in case you missed those, iOS 5 is pretty much an iOS-extreme-makeover. It’ll include a one-size-fits-all Notification Center, something called iMessage that’ll let iOS-based devices chat directly over either Wi-Fi or cellular networks, a new Newsstand bookshelf-like view of papers and magazines purchased from the App Store, tighter Twitter integration, improved to-dos (and reminders), a more granular picture taking app, enhanced photo editing, a few Safari browsing/reading tweaks, and—last but not least—”independence for all iOS devices.” Yep, iOS 5 makes it possible to do everything over the air and kiss cable tethering (to a Mac or PC) goodbye. iCloud dovetails with all that, replacing Apple’s Mobile Me service and enabling wireless synchronization of email, contacts, calendars, bookmarks, notes, to-do lists and more. Why’s it so important? As I wrote yesterday: Because the future of what you do—and what you do it with—is ineluctably online. Call it distributed computing the-next-generation, call it the latest iteration of the old client-server model, or if you’re in marketing,

Amazon fired its first serious shots across Apple and iOS’s bow this morning as it unveiled multiple new Kindle slates at surprisingly low prices, including new no-keyboard touch models as well as the not-so-secret headliner, dubbed “Kindle Fire” and built around Google’s Android operating system. “Four years ago, we set out to improve upon the book,” said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos as he took the stage at a press event, right before turning the spotlight on not one but three new Kindle slates. (MORE: Wait, Now Amazon’s Launching Three Kindle Tablets on Wednesday?) The first new device, dubbed “Kindle Touch,” is a grayscale e-ink Kindle but without a dedicated keyboard. Instead, the Touch works just as it sounds: navigation by way of a 6-inch infrared multitouch display. The Touch comes in two models, one with Wi-Fi for $99, another with Wi-Fi and 3G for $149 (Amazon claims 3G support in 100 countries worldwide, and that like prior Kindles, the $149 price is pay-once, no further charges or commitments). Claimed battery life (for both versions) is two months, and they’re available for pre-order now, but won’t ship until November 21. If you don’t need or care much about touch and want to save a few bucks, Amazon’s rebooting the entry-level Kindle, too (call this its second new device). Dubbed simply “Kindle,” the new 5.98-ounce, $79 e-Ink reader will also jettison the older Kindle models’ keyboards, replacing them with a few buttons situated at either side of a navigational rocker switch. The claimed battery life this model’s one month, and it’s available to order immediately. Last but not least, Amazon’s third reveal: the Kindle Fire, a $199 Android-based tablet with a 7-inch multi-touch “vibrant color” IPS display capable of 1024 x 600 pixel resolution at 169 ppi with 16 million colors. It packs a dual-core processor, 8 GB of internal storage, USB 2.0, a standard audio jack and weighs 14.6 ounces. No, there’s strangely no 3G version—for $199 the Fire is Wi-Fi only, though Amazon was quick to add that computer-related system requirements are nil because

It seems Bloomberg jumped Amazon’s gun this morning, unveiling the online e-tailer’s $199 “Kindle Fire” tablet before Amazon had a chance to get the word out at its press event this morning. Bloomberg confirmed speculation that Amazon will launch a 7-inch tablet running Google’s Android operating system. The news service notes the Fire lacks an inbuilt camera and microphone, and has Wi-Fi but not 3G, making it kind-of-but-not-exactly competitive with Apple’s iPad. The Fire will reportedly include a 30-day free trial of Amazon’s $79 a year “Prime” subscription service, which includes unlimited instant streaming of movies and TV shows as well as free two-day shipping. The rest of Bloomberg’s story’s essentially a rehash of old news mixed with investor speculation, so stand by, the real meat and potatoes of Amazon’s tablet reveal this morning—it’s philosophical purpose in Amazon’s grand design—remains to be seen as the conference (and the rest of today) unfolds.
At today’s Facebook f8 conference, Mark Zuckerberg took to the stage to announce the biggest overhaul to the social network we’ve seen since 2008: “Timeline,” a new kind of profile. Zuckerberg introduced the new Facebook feature as “all your stories, all your apps and a new way to express who you are.” Previously your old information published on Facebook disappeared at the bottom of your profile in chronological order, kind of like “falling off a cliff.” (LIST: 10 Things You Shouldn’t Do On Facebook) “With timeline, now you have a home for all the great stories you’ve already shared,” writes Samuel W. Lessin, a product manager at Facebook on the company’s blog. “They don’t just vanish as you add new stuff.” The new timeline user interface is incredibly visual and unlike any type of profile we’ve seen on a social network. It starts with a giant cover photo sitting above a person’s profile (Zuck used his dog, Beast). When you scroll down, your Facebook activity is given a heavy visual treatment with photos and videos, something akin to Tumblr. When you click on a story it’ll double in size, allowing you to explore it more fully. Come across something that you want to look into more later? You can star your favorites or hide stories you don’t want to see. The new timeline won’t be available for a few weeks, although once it rolls out you’ll be able to either publish it immediately or spend a couple of days curating it, adding and removing content that you want people to see. Really, really cool stuff, Zuck. “Awesome” might even be in order. PHOTOS: Zuckerberg Somehow Qualifies for Mortgage, Buys House Chris Gayomali is a reporter at TIME.
Forget the loss of Starz for a couple of seconds. I know it hurts, but at least consider that Netflix has signed the Discovery network on for at least two years of streaming content before you drop your subscription. The deal is sure to thrill brainy factoid lovers everywhere, with the inclusion of popular TV shows like Man vs. Wild, River Monsters and Deadliest Catch. The deal includes several channels: Discovery, TLC, Animal Planet, ID: Investigation Discovery and the Science and Military channels. Oprah’s network was not included—so much for that Dr. Phil fix. (MORE: Netflix Backlash Rages On in Response to ‘Qwikster’) Previous seasons of television shows will only be available through Netflix, so don’t count on the service to keep you up to date with current episodes. Netflix will also be adding a Discovery-specific search function to make it easier to view all of Discovery’s available programming. It’s finally some good news for the video streaming service, after it lost Starz, raised prices substantially and renamed its DVD service to Qwikster. With the wave of backlash that Netflix has faced, it’s a safe bet that it’ll have to add premium content if it wants to please its remaining subscribers. (MORE: Netflix Loses 1M Subscribers Because of Price Hike) Maybe Bear Grylls can show Netflix what it’s like to make a survival band-aid out of yak fur, tree bark and goat testicles after being viciously attacked by large throbs of complaining customers.
Netflix is splitting up its two products – DVD delivery and streaming – into two separate sites. You’ll be able to continue to log into Netflix to access streaming, but a new site called Qwikster will handle all the physical media stuff from now on. Aside from renaming its DVD service, Andy Rendich will step in as CEO to head the new Qwikster operation. The name was chosen because the company wanted to refer to its “quick delivery” of DVDs. There will be no change to current Netflix customers: if you’re subscribed to both, it’ll appear as two entries on your statement. (LIST: Top 10 Worst Corporate Name Changes) The official change won’t come for a few more weeks, but Netflix CEO Reed Hastings explained the decision in a company blog post: So we realized that streaming and DVD by mail are becoming two quite different businesses, with very different cost structures, different benefits that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and operate independently. It’s hard for me to write this after over 10 years of mailing DVDs with pride, but we think it is necessary and best: In a few weeks, we will rename our DVD by mail service to “Qwikster”. Qwikster will also offer a video game upgrade—similar to the current upgrade option for Blu-ray users—for those who want to rent Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 games. The company promises that there is also more to come, including improvements to Netflix’s streaming services. (MORE: No Surprise: Netflix Dominates on Consoles, Hulu Mostly on Computers) There are a couple of downsides with the change, though. For example, you’ll no longer be able to update account information through just one site – you’ll have to manually input it into each site for the changes to go into effect for both services. Ratings will also be separate from each other, and if a movie is not available for streaming, you’ll no longer get automatic notifications about whether its available on Qwikster. But the bright shining

Hello Windows 8, so nice to finally meet you—and Microsoft certainly helped us get acquainted at today’s Windows 8 developer presentation. We learned about the new touch-driven interface, how it runs on ARM as well as Intel processors, how Microsoft’s going to control application approval and, of course, how it all connects to the so-called “cloud.” But for all those Apple-like features, Microsoft’s take—still in beta—seems decidedly un-Apple-like. (MORE: 50 Windows 8 Screenshots, Hardware Photos and More) No surprise, the home screen looks a lot like Windows Phone’s: a colorful quilt of shiftable squares and rectangles signifying apps, connections, miscellaneous content and so forth. Remember the good old days of teeny-tiny icons? Tiles replace those. The word “Start” now floats freely above those tiles instead of bottom-left, ensconced in a pop-up taskbar menu. Tiles can be touched and freely moved between screens, and those screens renamed. Goodbye desktops, folders, taskbars, menus and nested file directories, hello context-sensitive tile-driven content surfing. After over 15 years dragging users through successive iterations of the then-revolutionary Windows 95 interface, Microsoft’s finally aiming for what Apple attempted (successfully) with OS X: a “do over,” if you will. (PHOTOS: The First Windows 8 Tablet) But note that Microsoft isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel so much as build an all-terrain version: Windows 8 packs everything it needs to know about you into your Windows Live account, then delivers a personalized experience (based on the tile-driven interface described above) on whatever Windows 8-based device you’re logged into. And that’s just for starters. Microsoft’s Build Professional Developers Conference in Anaheim, California is still underway (it runs today through Friday) and we’re bound to learn more about Windows 8 as the week unfolds.
Alas, the poor Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, we knew it well, but not in Germany, where a German district court ruled on Friday—it seems once and for all—that Samsung can no longer sell it, because, in so many words, it’s too much like Apple’s iPad 2. Worse still for Samsung, that means German retailers are banned from selling it throughout the European Union. That’s one heck of a victory for Apple. Cupertino was granted a preliminary injunction against sales of Samsung’s Android-based tablet back in August. At that time, the tablet was to be pulled from shelves across all of Europe save the Netherlands. (MORE: Apple Granted Injunction to Block Samsung Tablet Sales in Europe) In today’s ruling, the German district court upheld that injunction, denying Samsung access to one of Europe’s strongest economies. “The court is of the opinion that Apple’s minimalistic design isn’t the only technical solution to make a tablet computer, other designs are possible,” said Judge Johanna Brueckner-Hoffman in the verdict. “For the informed customer there remains the predominant overall impression that the device looks [like an Apple iPad 2].” While the court didn’t mention the iPad 2 by name, it referred to the design Apple filed with the E.U.—for all intents and purposes, the same thing. “The crucial issue was whether the Galaxy Tablet looked like the drawings registered as a design right,” said Brueckner-Hoffman. “Also, our case had nothing to do with trademarks or patents for technology.” What’s Samsung’s workaround? It doesn’t have one in Germany, but while German retailers can’t sell the tablet elsewhere in the E.U., Samsung’s not banned from selling it through other countries (at least not yet). Samsung’s vowing to appeal the decision, of course, so never say never, and don’t forget Samsung has its own patent suits against Apple. But for better or worse, in this first of doubtless numerous upcoming tablet/patent-related slap-fests: Apple 1, Samsung 0.
When Carol Bartz announced that she’d been dismissed as Yahoo’s CEO (over a phone call, no less), she quickly left her hotel and scribbled an email on her iPad to blast to the company’s 13,400 employees. It was a move so boldly 21st century that it made many (including us) like her a little bit more. Now Bartz—a woman who once famously told TechCrunch’s Michael Arrington to “fuck off” in front of a live audience—is speaking out on the incident, spouting off against her former employers in an article on Fortune. (MORE: Yahoo Reportedly ‘Open to Selling to the Right Bidder’) Earmuffs, kids. Here are the best bits: On first learning of her firing from Yahoo chairman Roy Bostock over a phone call: “I called him at 6:06,’ she recalls. When he got on the line, she says, he started reading a lawyer’s prepared statement to dismiss her. “I said, ‘Roy, I think that’s a script,’” adding, “‘Why don’t you have the balls to tell me yourself?’” And as Bostock finishes reading the statement? When Bostock finished reading, Bartz didn’t argue—”I got it. I got it,” she told the Yahoo chairman. “I thought you were classier.” On her expectations as CEO: “They want revenue growth,” says Bartz about the Yahoo board, “even though they were told that we would not have revenue growth until 2012.” Note: During her 10 quarter reign, Yahoo’s net income saw a 52% increase, according to The Atlantic. …and how the board’s indecision ended up hurting them: She attributes the directors’ impatience to the criticism they faced when they turned down a lucrative deal to sell Yahoo to Microsoft in 2007, before she arrived. “The board was so spooked by being cast as the worst board in the country,” Bartz says. “Now they’re trying to show that they’re not the doofuses that they are.” What she thinks about her replacement, former finance chief Tim Morse: “He’s a great guy,” she says. Morse was chief financial officer under Bartz, and now he is interim chief of a company whose stock has

Welcome to your weekly hack update, in which a major company admits its perimeter was breached and someone made off with piles of sensitive data. In this installment: Nokia, the Finland-headquartered mobile device manufacturer, and their online development community. Yep, that community was reportedly infiltrated by ne’er-do-wells who may have subsequently pilfered members’ personal information, including birth dates and email addresses. According to the Wall Street Journal, Nokia opted to shutter its online developer community until “further investigations and security assessments were complete.” (MORE: Anonymous Vows to Topple Facebook, But Is It a Hoax?) “During our ongoing investigation of the incident we have discovered that a database table containing developer forum members’ email addresses has been accessed, by exploiting a vulnerability in the bulletin board software that allowed an SQL Injection attack,” said Nokia in a message on the developer site. “Initially we believed that only a small number of these forum member records had been accessed, but further investigation has identified that the number is significantly larger.” The attack originally occurred last Monday, August 22, and while Nokia acknowledged it at the time, the company then mistakenly believed it was just a bit of “redirection” tomfoolery: the site was defaced and redirected to another with the message “LOL, Worlds number 1 mobile company but not spending a dime for a server security! FFS patch your security holes otherwise you will be just another antisec victim. No Dumping, No Leaking!!” Except that last bit may have been a head-fake. According to Nokia today, “The database table records [exposed] includes members’ email addresses and, for fewer than 7% who chose to include them in their public profile, either birth dates, homepage URL or usernames for AIM, ICQ, MSN, Skype or Yahoo.” The good news: Those database records didn’t contain passwords or credit card info. Another week, another company brought low by groups tumbling corporate security measures on a lark. Maybe it’s time for a song: I hack you, you hack me, we’re a hack-y…or okay, maybe not.
It’s hard to imagine Apple without Steve Jobs. But with Apple stronger than it has ever been, this might have been the best time for Tim Cook to step in as its new CEO. The company is in a position where it can probably take the biggest of hits—including losing its star chief executive. Steve Jobs’ resignation shouldn’t have been a surprise. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer seven years ago, his health has deteriorated in recent years. This year wasn’t the first year he took a medical leave; the first time was back in 2009, after tech pundits noticed his conspicuous absence from Apple’s annual Worldwide Developer Conference. (MORE: Steve Jobs Resigns As Apple CEO, Will Become Chairman) Apple’s stock, AAPL, has routinely suffered a beating whenever negative Jobs news has surfaced. The first time that Jobs took medical leave in 2009, Cook stepped to manage the company’s operations. The stock dipped significantly, but then rebounded by the time Jobs returned. It was pretty much the same picture earlier this year when Jobs took a second medical leave of absence. Despite the fact Jobs wasn’t running the show, Apple stocks reached its all-time high in July, trading at $403 per share. It should be no surprise that this time around, when Jobs decided to step down, Apple stock would take another beating. That’s not to say that we should count Jobs out. He’ll still be a chairman on Apple’s board, so he’ll have his say about what direction he wants to keep the company moving in. He’s reportedly been active at Apple during his time off as CEO, and it is likely that he will continue to play a role, health permitting. There is no question that Apple can survive without Jobs, but that doesn’t mean we won’t continue to see touches of Apple’s ex-CEO.
And just like that, Steve Jobs has stepped down from his throne as CEO of Apple and handed the scepter to the current chief operating officer, Tim Cook. You can’t say no one saw it coming. Jobs has been on a medical leave of absence since January 17, 2011 for undisclosed reasons (he had a liver transplant in April 2009 after battling pancreatic cancer for years). Cook’s been with Apple since 1998, a former IBM guy who’s been tagged as the heir apparent for years, filling in each time Jobs took a medical leave of absence and handling day to day operations since 2005. And Cook’s company positioning has been mostly good news for Apple: Each time he grabs the wheel, Apple’s stock goes up (Apple’s stock was down 5% in after hours trading, but that’s really no surprise, given the magnitude of this announcement). (MORE: Steve Jobs Resigns As Apple CEO, Will Become Chairman) No, this doesn’t mean Jobs is quitting Apple. He’s simply descending from Apple’s loftiest heights and requesting that he be allowed to serve “as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.” In fact Apple’s already obliged. The company moved immediately to name Cook as CEO, per Jobs’ wishes, and elected Jobs to the chairman position he requested. So yes, for reasons presumably health-related (the endless speculation continues), the close of another era’s at hand. The first kicked off all the way back in 1976, when Jobs, 21, and Steve Wozniak, 26, founded Apple. Just about anyone in their late thirties today probably remembers the Apple II (released in 1977), the first home “personal computer” with color graphics, a staple in school classrooms for years. And in 1984, we tuned into Super Bowl XVIII and said hello to the Macintosh (remember the hurtling sledgehammer?), the computer that wore a smiley face before turning them sideways in instant messaging clients was hip. You could have one with a generous (in 1984) 512K for a bargain $3,195. And then things went strangely south for Jobs and Apple. Jobs had tapped

Steve Jobs has resigned as chief executive officer of Apple. The reason is presumably health-related—Jobs went on indefinite medical leave in January—but neither Jobs nor Apple gave specifics in their statements. Tim Cook, Apple’s chief operating officer, will replace Jobs as CEO, while Jobs will serve as chairman. Cook was already handling day-to-day operations during Jobs’ leave of absence. Jobs is stepping down during the best of times for Apple. Its iPhone is the most profitable smartphone on the market, and its iPad dominates the tablet market. Apple’s redesigned MacBook Air laptops have also proven successful, prompting PC makers to scramble on their own ultra-thin designs. (MORE: Can Tim Cook Keep Apple Afloat In Steve Jobs’ Absence?) Below is Steve Jobs’ statement in full: To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community: I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come. I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee. As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple. I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role. I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you. Steve And here’s Apple’s press release: Apple’s Board of Directors today announced that Steve Jobs has resigned as Chief Executive Officer, and the Board has named Tim Cook, previously Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, as the company’s new CEO. Jobs has been elected Chairman of the Board and Cook will join the Board, effective immediately. “Steve’s extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as

Ever have one of those days, where you accidentally expunge half your hard drive’s contents, then realize, shattered, that you don’t have a backup? Me too, and we can add WikiLeaks—the nonprofit private industry and state secret bean-spiller—to the brotherhood of the crushed and traumatized. Or at least add in part. It depends where you’re standing, and I don’t mean from without, but within, where it seems WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and the site’s ex-spokesperson Daniel Domscheit-Berg have been squabbling over critical WikiLeaks data that’s now suddenly been eliminated from the leak site’s info-repository, possibly for good. (PHOTOS: Inside WikiLeaks’ Bunker) That’s the story from Der Spiegel this morning, where former WikiLeaks spokesperson Daniel Domscheit-Berg says he just rubbed out upwards of 3,500 files he was hanging onto. His rationale: WikiLeaks couldn’t ensure the documents’ sources would remain anonymous. WikiLeaks had held the documents on its servers until about this time last year, but when Domscheit-Berg left (he claims because WikiLeaks had critical structural deficiencies), he took the documents with him—or to hear WikiLeaks tell it, he “stole” them. The documents reportedly included data on the U.S. “no-fly” list, several “far-right” organizations and perhaps even the ostensibly momentous files relating to Bank of America (Assange has said WikiLeaks’ unreleased U.S. bank data “could take down a bank or two”). And now, after sitting on the files for a year, they’re apparently gone. According to Domscheit-Berg, the documents were “shredded over the past few days in order to ensure that the sources are not compromised.” The whole thing gets uglier. Both Assange and Domscheit-Berg have hurled accusations at each other for months. Assange says Domscheit-Berg’s been trying to sabotage WikiLeaks, while Berg’s book Inside WikiLeaks is a razor-tongued indictment of both WikiLeaks and Assange. Confusing the matter is Domscheit-Berg’s subsequent launch and promotion of a WikiLeaks alternative, OpenLeaks, described as “a project that aims at making whistleblowing safer and more widespread.” Don’t forget Domscheit-Berg’s expulsion from the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) for allegedly using the hacking club to publicize his new website. So

It’s looking like the world’s biggest cyberattack, and also like it’s been transpiring under our noses. That’s according to a report released today by security firm McAfee detailing the company’s investigation of massive intrusions into over 70 international companies, including governments and non-profit organizations, which occurred within the last five years. Forget hacktivist groups like LulzSec and Anonymous—rank amateurs by comparison, implies the McAfee report. (LIST: The Biggest Pranks in Geek History) “Lately, with the rash of revelations about attacks on organizations such as RSA, Lockheed Martin, Sony, PBS, and others, I have been asked by surprised reporters and customers whether the rate of intrusions is increasing and if it is a new phenomenon,” writes the report’s author, McAfee vice president of threat research Dmitri Alperovitch, who finds the question “ironic because these types of exploitations have occurred relentlessly for at least a half decade” and calls information leaked over the past six months the “result of relatively unsophisticated and opportunistic exploitations for the sake of notoriety by loosely organized political hacktivist groups such as Anonymous and Lulzsec.” By comparison, says Alperovitch, the attacks McAfee’s been investigating “are much more insidious and occur largely without public disclosures.” Ergo McAfee’s frightening security dump this morning. “With the goal of raising the level of public awareness today we are publishing the most comprehensive analysis ever revealed of victim profiles from a five year targeted operation by one specific actor — Operation Shady RAT, as I have named it at McAfee (RAT is a common acronym in the industry which stands for Remote Access Tool),” says Alpervotich in the report. The perp? Unnamed, though China comes to mind with all the stories in recent months alleging the country’s been involved in clandestine, state-sponsored cyber-warfare (that last term’s debatable, of course). In any event, Alperovitch says the guilty party is singular, as in “one specific operation conducted by a single actor/group,” and while he’s careful not to jump to conclusions, he suggests “a state actor behind the intrusions.” How do we know any of this? Alperovitch says McAfee

Anonymous, the hacker hive behind attacks on Sony, the Church of Scientology and various international governments has apparently trained its crosshairs on NATO, the military-minded North Atlantic Treaty Organization composed of the United States and multiple European countries. The group claims it managed to hack into NATO computers and abscond with reams of data, some of which it’s already posted online. “We are sitting on about one Gigabyte of data from NATO now, most of which we cannot publish as it would be irresponsible. But Oh NATO….” tweeted Anonymous Thursday morning. (LIST: Who’s Who in the U.K. Phone-Hacking Scandal) Shortly thereafter, the group posted a link to a PDF document titled “NATO Restricted,” dated January 2008 and subtitled “Outsourcing of Balkans CIS Support.” The 10-page document seems to be an overview of the logistics involved in seeking authorization to outsource “Balkans CIS operations and maintenance (O&M) support.” Anonymous claims it managed to break into NATO using a technique employed in several recent hack attacks by both it and the hacker group LulzSec. “Yes, #NATO was breached,” wrote Anonymous. “And we have lots of restricted material. With some simple injection. In the next days, wait for interesting data.” A second “unclassified” PDF was released in in the last hour, titled “Security Within the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).” There’s also some teasing by the group: “Hi NATO. Yes we haz more of your delicious data. You wonder where from? No hints, your turn. You call it war; we laugh at your battleships. From suddenly silent second-stringers (per the rise of hacker rivals LulzSec) to today’s headline-grabbing international security breach, it sounds like Anonymous is back, though today’s release comes as the F.B.I. claimed on Wednesday that it arrested 14 members of the group. Anonymous’s response? “Dear FBI: You cannot arrest an idea. The more you arrest, the louder we’ll roar. We are not scared anymore. We, the people, silent no more.” MORE: Anonymous Incurs Google+ Ban, Retaliates by Launching Own Social Network

The FBI arrested 14 people earlier today suspected of being involved with the hacker group Anonymous. They are being charged on “various counts of conspiracy and intentional damage to a protected computer,” and participating in an attack against PayPal late last year. Dubbed “Operation Payback,” Anonymous targeted PayPal after the online payment service stopped processing donations for Julian Assange’s WikiLeaks. However, during the attack, it seems that hackers did not disguise their IP addresses, giving authorities a way to track them down. (MORE: As LulzSec Claims CIA Coup, ‘Anonymous’ Hackers Arrested Worldwide) The suspects came from all over the country, spread over 10 states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, D.C., Florida, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico and Ohio. It’s been reported by Wired that officials executed more than 35 search warrants. If convicted, the suspects’ alleged activities are punishable by a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. If they are also charged with conspiracy, that charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. The FBI has already released a list of suspects’ names and ages, with the majority of the hackers being under the age of 30. (MORE: Hacker Arrest in U.K. Turns Up ‘Significant Amount of Material’) Two other people have also been arrested in connection to the crimes. One is suspected to have cooperated with LulzSec after he lifted information from AT&T that was subsequently distributed through the hacker group’s communications channels. Another man supposedly hacked InfraGard’s website, which is affiliated with the FBI, and then boasted about it on Twitter. There have been arrests overseas, as well. One person has been arrested in the United Kingdom and four people have been arrested in the Netherlands, all on the suspicion of their relationship to the hacker groups. Forty-five other arrests have also been made in Spain, Italy, Switzerland, and Turkey.
We figured Spotify might be launching this week; but guess what, it’s already here! Time to slap on your headphones. (MORE: Five Cool Websites for New Spotify Users) Gadget blog Engadget got wind of the news last night from Spotify’s very own Kenneth Parks, the company’s chief content officer. It turns out all four major labels have signed on, giving the company a rockin’ start. Parks told Engadget: “We were really adamant about bringing the service to the US, which means a really great, free experience. We wanted to be really careful about the way we did this, and the rights holders felt the same way. It took some time, but we’re absolutely thrilled that all four major labels and a ton of indies are behind us, and we’ll be bringing that Spotify experience to the US tomorrow.” Spotify’s service will offer three pricing plans, including a free version, provided that users won’t mind the ads so much. The cheapest paid plan, for $4.99 per month, allows you to enjoy Spotify without ads. The last level, for $9.99 per month, lets you enjoy the service offline and on your (Android or iOS) phone. It’s comparable to what the company charges its European users per month. (MORE: Hands-on with Spotify: Promising, with Let-Downs) The U.S. version will be mostly similar to what is offered in Europe, so perhaps our preview will stand the test of time. The American complement will still get access to at least part of Spotify’s global catalog of approximately 15 million songs. Parks noted that it would still be a “huge” catalog.
