Chilling new research from the Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New York suggests that texting while driving has become the number one cause of death amongst teenagers behind the wheel, surpassing drunk driving for the first time. An estimated 3,000 teenagers die each year due to sending and receiving text messages while driving, as compared to the 2,800 who died due to drunk driving. Another 300,000 teenagers were injured via texting – a number again higher than the 282,000 injured due to intoxicated drivers. The researchers involved in the study suggest that the problem isn’t that texting behind the wheel is more dangerous than driving under the influence. The problem is that teenagers text far more often than they drink, especially while driving. Having more opportunities for accidents results in, predictably, more accidents. Though the survey only took a look at the driving habits of teenagers, it would be safe to assume that texting while driving is just as dangerous to adults. A recent study by AT&T showed that nearly half of all adults text while driving – a rate even higher than amongst teens. The results of this study seem to confirm a study from earlier this year stating that even hands-free texting is as dangerous as drunk driving. But though statistics may seem scary, there’s plenty you can do right now to help prevent a texting-while-driving accident in the future. Take a look at Techlicious’s guide to Safe Alternatives to Texting While Driving, which gives you a rundown of the top apps and services that restrict your teens’ phone use while driving. This article was written by Fox Van Allen and originally appeared on Techlicious.
Robotic cars are no longer mere sci-fi fodder -- they could also begin appearing on Nevada highways. After ongoing lobbying from Google, which began testing self-driving vehicles in 2010, Nevada passed legislation last June that required the Department of Motor Vehicles to establish a set of regulations for self-driving vehicles. And now, that hurdle has been cleared.

My latest Technologizer column on TIME.com is about OnStar FMV, the first version of the car safety-and-information service available as an aftermarket add-in for most cars, cleverly built into a rear-view mirror. When I shared the story on Twitter, Facebook and Google+, I heard from some folks who said FMV sounded neat. But a few said they were disgruntled with OnStar over privacy issues, and therefore weren’t interested. What they were referring to was a kerfuffle that cropped up late last month. GM announced it was making changes to OnStar’s privacy policies that would allow it to continue to use the GPS incorporated into OnStar hardware to track a car even if its owner had canceled OnStar service. The company said it reserved the right to capture information such as a car’s speed and location, and then sell that information, aggregated and anonymized. (MORE: Creepy: OnStar Will Track You Whether You’re Subscribed or Not) People weren’t happy with this new wrinkle. So much so that GM quickly reversed course and decided not to give itself the right to track OnStar-equipped vehicles after service had been canceled. (It does track cars that have OnStar enabled: In fact, that’s the whole point of the service, which uses this information for driving directions and to send help in case of emergencies.) A GM representative told me, incidentally, that the new privacy policy never applied to OnStar FMV in the first place. Bottom line: If you’re intrigued by OnStar FMV but alarmed by the idea of GM monitoring you after you drop the service, you don’t need to fret. Unless you’re a privacy absolutist and wish to eliminate all possibility of GM or anyone else spying on your location. But if you are, you don’t want GPS in your car, period. In fact, you don’t want to carry a GPS-enabled anything. I wonder how many people refuse to carry a modern smartphone on such privacy grounds?
Ford’s Microsoft-powered Sync system offers voice-activated control of music and navigation services, but the technology will be expanding to include health and wellness services in the not-too-distant future. On a rainy October day outside MIT’s Media Lab, I hopped in a cloud-connected Ford Explorer for a demonstration by Ford’s Group and Senior Technical Leader for Vehicle Design and Infotronics, K. Venkatesh Prasad. (MORE: Ford Turns Cars Into App Platforms) Using the in-dash Sync system, Prasad dialed up Ford’s health and wellness services to show off blood glucose management features for diabetics. As someone who’s been diabetic for almost 30 years myself, I was immediately intrigued. Before long, a robotic female voice answered: Car: “Services: What service do you want?” Prasad: “Glucose.” Car: “Good morning. Is that you, Joe?” Prasad: “Yes.” Car: “Great. I noticed that you had a blood glucose of 81 milligrams per deciliter at 6:32am today. Since this is close to being too low for you, I want to make sure you’re safe to drive. Have you rechecked your blood glucose since 6:32?” Prasad: “No.” Car: “Have you had your breakfast yet?” Prasad: “No.” Car: “Okay. So since you have taken your diabetes medications which can and should lower your blood glucose, and have not had anything to eat, it is important for you to recheck your blood glucose now. Do you have your glucose meter with you?” Prasad: “Yes.” Car: “Great. Check your glucose and tell me the result when you have it.” Prasad: “One hundred and thirty.” Car: “I heard you say one hundred-thirty. Is that right?” Prasad: “Yes.” Car: “Joe, this is great. You checked your blood glucose. It had dropped more, and because you checked, you have prevented it from going too low. Do you have glucose tabs in the car?” Prasad: “No.” Car: “Not a problem, but you do want to eat some fast-acting carbs. Examples are three ounces of juice, three to five hard candies—things like that. To be on the safe side, please recheck again in another 30 minutes.
Until last week, I’d never driven an Audi in my life. But when I got to try the new Audi A7 for my latest Technologizer column over on TIME.com, I didn’t have to learn anything new to drive it–everything from the gear shifter to the brakes to the turn signals were similar or identical to the ones in dozens of other cars I’ve driven. The whole experience was instantly familiar. Okay, there was one big exception—the A7′s super-fancy MMI infotainment system, which provides Google Earth-based navigation, iPhone integration, Bluetooth connectivity, a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, and scads of other features. (MORE: It’s Not You, It’s It: Voice Recognition Doesn’t Recognize Women) It was neat. But it was also significantly different in many respects from the Sync system in the Ford Focus I drove a few months ago, even though many of the features were roughly comparable. I had to spend time with the manual to figure out what the knobs and buttons did. I got confused by the fact that the display showed turn-by-turn directions with the next instruction at the bottom of the display rather than the top. I didn’t notice my favorite feature—the ability to enter text by drawing characters on a touch pad with my finger tip—until I read about it on the Web. None of this was all that painful—and once I’d learned how to accomplish tasks, I found the A7′s way of doing things to be reasonably efficient. But it’s the way of user interfaces to get more consistent over time. It’s been true of cars for decades. It’s true of Web browsers—if you know how to use Internet Explorer, you pretty much know how to use Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Opera. It’s why Windows 7 and OS X Snow Leopard are—pssst—way more similar in some fundamental respects than Microsoft and Apple will admit. Ambitious in-car information and entertainment systems are still a very new idea, so it’s not surprising that the companies that design them are still figuring out how they should work. But I

Here’s something that could either relieve a lot of tension, or increase paranoia about whether or not the world is ignoring you: If you’re a woman, there’s a strong possibility that your voice-activated car really isn’t listening to you. Thankfully, the problem is all the car’s. According to AOL Autos, carmakers “acknowledge that women have a tougher time using speech-recognition technology than men” because the systems have a hard time deciphering what was actually said. It’s not only women who have this problem; male drivers with foreign or even thick regional accents also, apparently, can’t be understood by the systems either: Foreign accents still stump most systems. David Champion, who leads Consumer Reports’ auto testing department, often stymies cars with his British accent. His voice isn’t even picked up by British car brands, like Land Rover. When he asks it to do something, the car will respond in a British accent, saying, “Sorry?” People lose patience easily with voice technology, Champion says. Drivers start getting annoyed if they have to repeat something once or twice. “Once you get to three times, you think this is a piece of junk,” he says. The solution, according to the carmakers, may be changing the way that people speak – According to the VP of voice technology for auto supplier ATX Group, Tom Schalk, “many issues with women’s voices could be fixed if female drivers were willing to sit through lengthy training… Women could be taught to speak louder, and direct their voices towards the microphone” – but that seems not only impractical but also fairly insulting to the user. As one of the foreign-accented people who always gets misunderstood by voice-automated systems, I’m just hoping that they decide to go the alternate route and try and improve the software of said systems, instead. If nothing else, to save on the need for my shouting continuously.

A lot of people love their cars. But would you friend yours? Most of today’s cars are as much computer-on-wheels as they are transportation. Toyota and Salesforce.com have decided that if cars are going to be smart, they should be smart enough to talk to us. Wait, though: not like KITT in Knight Rider. Not that sort of talk. Something more like Facebook. They’re proposing a “private social network” that connects you with your vehicle. “Owners will be able to ‘chat’ with their Toyotas like they would with a friend on Twitter or Facebook. The car would have its own ‘profile’ and send a message to the driver’s phone, for instance, reminding him to recharge its depleted battery. The owner would be able to carry out a simple, two-way conversation with the car.” Wow. The mind boggles. What might a two-way conversation with a car be like? Hmmm… @your_car @owner hi there! @your_car @owner just wanted to let you know that i’m here @your_car @owner you know, just in case you need me @your_car @owner i’m right here, driving along @your_car @owner sure is a lovely day for a drive huh? @your_car @owner i could do with some gas, though @owner @your_car please will you stop messaging me, i’m trying to drive here.
