PCMag has published the results from its annual test of mobile data speeds. Covering 30 cities around the country, PCMag used eight Samsung Galaxy Note II smartphones set to connect to the LTE and non-LTE signals of each of the four major networks (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon). You can read more about the process here. The overall results from the tests seem to indicate that AT&T logged the fastest LTE speeds in the most places, while Verizon held up well from a reliability standpoint and “aced every rural/suburban region” thanks to its nationwide LTE coverage. According to PCMag’s Sascha Segan: Overall, we found AT&T’s LTE network to be the fastest of the group, but Verizon Wireless typically triumphed on our reliability gauges. T-Mobile’s new LTE network looked great in the few cities where we could find it, and it has the best backup in T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network. Sprint, just like in 2012, didn’t win any cities, but it’s on an upward trend by switching from obsolete WiMAX to a fresh LTE system. While results varied city by city, Segan concluded that all four carriers are “working hard and delivering better networks than they did last year,” adding, “There’s one thing clear, though: If you have an older 3G phone and you’re in an LTE coverage area, upgrade to an LTE phone right now. The difference in data performance is dramatic.” Fastest Mobile Networks 2013 [PCMag.com]

If you’re a Comcast subscriber, you’ll soon be able to turn your home into a part of Comcast’s network of Wi-Fi hotspots. And it won’t cost you a dime extra. According to Comcast’s press release: Comcast is beginning to give its Xfinity Internet customers an additional “xfinitywifi” signal (or SSID) in their home that is completely separate and distinct from the family’s private and secure home WiFi signal. Offered at no additional cost to Xfinity Internet residential customers, the additional WiFi hotspots will enable friends, relatives, visitors and other Xfinity Internet customers instant, easy access to fast and reliable WiFi. “Offered at no additional cost.” How generous of Comcast to let us help build its giant Wi-Fi network without making us pay extra each month. All we can offer is our electricity and bandwidth. As for that pesky bandwidth issue, a Comcast rep told ReadWrite,”Typically, there should be minimal impact to the customer’s private home Wi-Fi network’s speed or experience due to the neighborhood Wi-Fi hotspot in the home.” I’m assuming “typically” wouldn’t cover your next-door neighbor streaming HD video via Netflix for a few hours each night. And if it’s too big a bother, you can just opt out, says ReadWrite. Yes, it looks like you’ll need to opt out of this — not into it (I’ve checked with Comcast for clarification about this and will update this piece if I hear back). “Comcast’s newest Wireless Gateway broadcasts two WiFi signals. By default, one is securely configured for the private use of the home subscriber. The second is a neighborhood ‘xfinitywifi’ network signal that can be shared,” says Comcast’s press release. (If you’re a current Comcast customer, this only affects you if you have one of the company’s aforementioned new wireless gateways that launched in late April.) There are positives to counterbalance my grumpiness: This is a good way to keep your secure network all to yourself, while directing others to use the public one. You’re also off the hook if someone pirates a bunch of music (or worse)

Facebook announced that it will no longer offer advertisers the ability to place Sponsored Stories, controversial advertisements that turn your social media activity into a commercial. Sponsored Stories are a way for advertisers to take your actions on Facebook and pay to share them with the world. Naturally, though, companies are uninterested in your old photos and mundane updates – they’re only interested in promoting when you check in to businesses like Starbucks, or otherwise Like their pages. For a few pennies each, a corporation can make sure all your friends know that you Like Twinkies, Nutella, Ford vehicles or anything else you’ve ever shared on Facebook involving a corporate brand. Advertisers know your friends value your opinions, so they’re willing to spend money to make your favorable opinions on their brands better known, even if it causes you great personal embarrassment. Don’t go hitting your favorite brands with a flurry of Likes just yet, though: Sponsored Stories, like a bad rash, aren’t actually going away entirely. “Sponsored stories as an idea doesn’t go away. Sponsored stories as a product goes away,” explained Facebook Product Marketing Director Brian Boland to Ad Age. Instead of Sponsored Stories, Facebook will now offer a more comprehensive type of ad. The fact that you Like McDonald’s may be featured, but it’ll be mentioned at the bottom of a larger ad to add “social context.” Ultimately, this change could make your actions on Facebook even more valuable to advertisers, so if you value your privacy, now is the time to take action. There’s no way to stop seeing your friends used as advertising fodder (short of sharing this news, naturally), but you can stop Facebook from using your own name and likeness to sell third-party products. Check out our Comprehensive Guide to Facebook Privacy Settings to learn how to opt out. This article was written by Fox Van Allen and originally appeared on Techlicious.
Will Xbox One allow you to trade in and resell disc-based games? Yes…sort of, says Microsoft in its fresh “How Games Licensing Works on Xbox One“ explainer, before winding up like some star NFL kicker and punting the ball downfield. Before we proceed, give this a quick read — the relevant text: Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games. Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once. In our role as a game publisher, Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends. Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners. First things first: Contrary to some of the alarmist rumors kicked around by the gossip blogs last month, Microsoft’s confirming it won’t charge a fee if you hand a game off to someone else with an Xbox One. It also won’t charge a fee if you choose to trade-in your used disc-based games. In fact, the company’s basically saying it and fees are like celebrity news sites and responsible reporting — just not happening.
I updated my iPhone 4S to iOS 6.1.3 long enough ago that I don’t remember doing it. The update became available in late March and I applied the update shortly thereafter, so it’s been months. Suffice it to say, this problem didn’t manifest itself right away. However, on my way back home from the beach over Memorial Day weekend, my car’s Bluetooth system suddenly stopped connecting to the iPhone. It was connecting to an Android phone of mine just fine, so I quickly ruled out any problem with the car. Upon closer examination, I found that both the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections in the settings menu were grayed out, meaning that I couldn’t connect to Bluetooth devices or Wi-Fi networks. After a quick search, I discovered that others were having the same problem. There’s a 16-page (and growing) forum post on Apple’s website and an Apple help page for correcting the issue, along with a smattering of similar complaints popping up on other sites. I tried all the steps Apple laid out on its help page, including completely backing up the phone and restoring it to its factory defaults, but the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth options remained grayed out. I figured they were both on the same chipset and that something was wrong with the chipset, but the fact that other users were complaining of this problem after updating to iOS 6.1.3 made me a little suspicious. Whatever the case, I needed the Wi-Fi to work so I didn’t incur overage charges from Verizon (and Wi-Fi is also far faster than 3G, of course) and I very much wanted the Bluetooth to work so the phone could be used with my car’s hands-free system. Continuing to use the phone in its current state wasn’t really an option, so I made an appointment at the Genius Bar and headed out to the Apple Store. The girl who checked me in for my Genius Bar appointment was perfectly pleasant. When I showed her the phone, without skipping a beat, she said, “Oh. Then

So much for your right to resell MP3 music files: a U.S. District court just decided that the resale of MP3 files — where those files are transferred by copying — officially violates the Copyright Act. If you want to resell a book, you can check out Abebooks, Cash4Books and half a dozen others. If you want to resell clothes, pictures or furniture, there’s Craigslist, your local consignment store or your neighborhood’s poles and signposts (to which people customarily affix pieces of paper with the words “Garage Sale!” sporting hand-scrawled arrows pointing the way). If you want to resell a CD or DVD, there’s SecondSpin, eBay, Amazon and dozens more. Lists of ways and places to resell used goods could probably fill a set of encyclopedias, and include both offline and online venues. Humans have been exchanging secondhand goods for millennia. I’m in the process of doing it myself. Glancing through my condo this morning, currently half-packed in boxes (incidentally purchased used off Craiglist) for an upcoming move with piles of books, CDs, movies, clothes, pictures, computers, baby items, miscellaneous electronics, musical equipment, kitchen wares and furniture, I see nothing that isn’t resalable. I’d balk — and I suspect you would too — if someone told us we couldn’t resell any of this stuff. And yet we’ve also, over the past decade or so, begun acquiring troves of items that pose significant resale challenges: intangible — but no less physical — digital goods, from MP3s and video games to videos and e-books. But let’s say a store existed where you could resell digital music files, perhaps MP3s purchased through Apple’s iTunes Store. In fact such a store already exists: Music exchange ReDigi’s been allowing the purchase and resale of digital music since its inception in October 2011, calling itself “a free cloud service that allows you to store, stream, buy, and sell your legally purchased pre-owned digital music.” Employing technology it calls a “Verification Engine,” ReDigi claims it can validate your music collection, then upload — but not copy, since that would be leaving

T-Mobile has made a bold step by getting rid of two-year contracts. It’s actually not quite that simple – especially if you want an inexpensive phone – but there are savings to be found nonetheless. Here’s the skinny. The plans are affordable, considering what you get. Fifty bucks a month will get you unlimited minutes, unlimited text messages and 500 megabytes of data. Ten bucks more gets you an additional two gigabytes of data; ten bucks more than that gets you unlimited data. Family plans start at $80 per month for two phones and top out at $210 per month for five lines and unlimited data. All plans include unlimited text messages and the ability to use your phone as a data hotspot for your other devices, which are nice perks. Such features can cost extra on competing networks. There are no data overages, but there’s a catch. Let’s say you opt for the $50-per-month plan to try to save some money, but you blow through your 500-megabyte data allotment. You won’t be charged extra and your data won’t be turned off, but it will be slowed down to almost unusable speeds. Remember dial-up? How slow everything was? We’re talking speeds close to dial-up. Of course, connecting your phone to your home or office Wi-Fi connection will keep your data speeds nice and fast. Only the data connection to T-Mobile gets slowed down; you should connect your phone to Wi-Fi whenever possible as a general rule of thumb, since it doesn’t use your T-Mobile data allotment. There are no two-year contracts, but there’s a catch. Your smartphone that cost you $200? It actually costs a lot more than that, but you paid $200 for it in exchange for a two-year contract with Verizon or AT&T or Sprint or whichever company you’re with. So how can T-Mobile continue to offer cheap phones when there are no two-year contracts anymore? One way is by letting you pay full-price for a phone. Samsung’s Galaxy Note II costs $680 that way. That’s the most

The longer technology is around, the cheaper products get for consumers. The price of a 32-inch flat-panel television, for instance, reached an all-time low average of $435 during the second quarter of 2012, down from $546 in the same period a year ago. Even so, the overall average price paid for a new TV has actually risen lately.

Verizon's been hinting at the arrival of shared data plans for over a year, and this week, the wireless carrier finally revealed how the so-called "Share Everything" plans will work. I did the math on a handful of scenarios, and compared the prices between Verizon's existing plans and its new plans.
