For the most part, Intel’s been left out in the cold when it comes to tablets and smartphones. While the company’s processors are relatively powerful compared to mobile-centric processors from competitors like Qualcomm and Marvell, they aren’t able to eke out nearly as much battery life. To address the growing tablet market Intel unveiled its “Oak Trail” processor design in June, promising that it’s “optimized for sleek tablet and netbook designs” and will be available in early 2011. Intel CEO Paul Otellini reaffirmed that promise recently, telling industry analysts that his company’s processors will power 35 tablets from brands such as Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo and Asus by the middle of next year. Otellini added that Intel’s smartphone-specific “Medfield” processors will begin showing up next year as well, saying, “You will see smartphones from premier branded vendors in the second half of 2011 with Intel silicon inside them,” according to Reuters. Intel will be playing a fair amount of catch-up over the next couple of years, especially as tablets and smartphones begin to erode sales of conventional portable computers. The company has the facilities and money to make a big long term push, though, and Otellini’s attitude that competing in the smartphone segment is “a marathon, not a sprint,” according to Reuters, will likely turn out to be pretty accurate over the next decade or so.
AMD is getting ready to put its 2006 acquisition of graphics company ATI to good use with the 2011 launch of what it’s calling the Fusion APU. The Fusion APU (accelerated processing unit) combines both the CPU (central processing unit) and the GPU (graphics processing unit) together onto a single silicon die. The end result will be less latency when running applications since commands won’t have as far to travel, which in turn will use less overall power while still maintaining performance and offering longer battery life for portable devices. Here’s how AMD explains it: “At the most basic level, AMD’s new Accelerated Processing Units combine general-purpose x86 CPU cores with programmable vector processing engines on a single silicon die. AMD’s APUs also include a variety of critical system elements, including memory controllers, I/O controllers, specialized video decoders, display outputs, and bus interfaces, but real appeal of these chips stems from the inclusion of both scalar and vector hardware as full-fledged processing elements. Others have lashed a CPU and a basic graphics unit together in a single package, but none have attempted this feat with truly programmable GPUs like those in the AMD Fusion designs, let alone GPUs that can be programmed using high-level industry-standard tools like DirectCompute and OpenCL.” From consumers’ standpoint, we can likely expect to see thinner and lighter portables at more aggressive price points that provide decent performance. The line will be present in several different types of devices—laptops, desktops, netbooks, etc.—with the overarching theme being more bang for the buck. The Fusion APUs will begin rolling out in the first half of next year.
AMD is finding its way further into the ultrathin, long battery life notebook arena with its recently announced 2010 “Vision” series CPUs. The line be available “in sleek and affordable notebooks that can deliver up to eight hours of battery life” while scoring “50% better than a comparable Intel-based system with Nvidia discrete graphics,” according to AMD. The company’s also got a new line of desktop CPUs on tap, highlighted by the new AMD Phenom II X6 CPU, which is a six-core processor. Both the notebook and desktop processor platforms are available today and will begin rolling out from various manufacturers shortly. Several of the Lenovo systems announced yesterday that’ll be out in June contain the new AMD chipsets. The mobile processors are the big news here, though. Intel’s had a field day with its Atom-based processors being found in just about every netbook on the market. AMD’s previously-available “Neo” processors perform slightly better than comparable Atom chips, but the significantly shorter battery life that accompanies the Neo chips has been a pretty significant issue. If these new chips can indeed provide up to eight hours of battery while outperforming Intel’s platform, AMD might be able to make up some ground.

Intel’s Atom CPUs have been all over the netbook space but the processor manufacturer wants in on the lucrative smartphone and tablet arenas as well. With the introduction of the Z600 series of Atom CPUs, Intel is promising processor speeds up to 1.9GHz for tablets and 1.5GHz for smartphones while maintaining long battery life and the ability to play 1080p video. Per Intel’s press release: “Collectively these new chips deliver significantly lower power including >50x reduction in idle power, >20x reduction in audio power, and 2-3x reductions across browsing and video scenarios – all at the platform level when compared to Intel’s previous-generation product. These power savings translate into >10 days of standby, up to 2 days of audio playback and 4-5 hours of browsing and video battery life. When combined with 1.5-3x higher compute performance, 2-4x richer graphics, >4x higher JavaScript performance, and support for full HD 1080p high-profile video decoding and 720p HD video recording, these low-power innovations bring a rich, PC-like visual experience to powerful handheld computers.” This all sounds similar to what’s offered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform, which is being seen more and more in higher-end smartphones, and Apple’s A4 chip, which is found in the iPad. However, the Intel chips feature a much higher clock speed. The Snapdragon and A4 chips currently top out at 1GHz while Intel’s Z600 CPUs will be able to hit 1.5GHz for smartphones and 1.9GHz for tablets. If Intel’s truly able to provide competitive battery life in the face of these higher clock speeds, things could get interesting. Although the Z600 series chips are now available to manufacturers, analysts believe that we may not see consumer devices based on the new platform until next year.
