WTB one ticket to World Joyland. If you’ve got a hankering to join the world’s biggest nerdfest (no, we’re not talking about Comic-Con), you might have to hop a plane all the way to Changzhou, China to get the ultimate Warcraft and Starcraft fix. Billed as the world’s first video game-themed amusement park, “World Joyland” is dedicated to gamers that probably spend way too much time in Orgrimmar’s auction house. Located inside the Jiangsu Province just north of Shanghai, the whole thing cost nearly $31 million to build and covers some 600,000 square meters. (MORE: Blizzard’s ‘World of Warcraft’ Now Free-to-Play Until Level 20) A large part of the park is dedicated to Blizzard’s World of Warcraft and Starcraft games… but you wouldn’t find them by that name anyhow (given that you couldn’t also magically read Chinese overnight): Since the park doesn’t have the legal rights to use those names, the World of Warcraft section has been named the “Terrain of Magic,” and the Starcraft portion is called the “Universe of Starship.” Not surprisingly, there are several ginormous, larger-than-life “gaming and technology facilities” for attendees. Good plan: Get them out of the bedroom, where they can pay money to enter a park, to only reunite with a computer screen several minutes later. Rollercoasters optional. Still, is it worth hanging around for a shot at Chinese amusement park fun? English-language Chinese blog Shanghaiist traipsed through the park, which opened earlier this May, noting their observations, sans bow and mage staff (these were confiscated at the gate, according to reports): One of the most disturbing parts of the park was the general decay we witnessed, unnerving in a park open only a hair shy of two months. Cracks in paint and rust on handrails made the attendants’ habit of screaming “Goodbye!” as the roller coaster surged out of the gates even more terrifying. They also noted that the best rides were often the least crowded, because of a local preference for the “boring rides.” The park itself also tended to attract more

Don’t buy an Apple product in China on launch day unless you have some riot gear on you. This past weekend, the iPad 2 launched there and what started off as orderly in the nation’s capital quickly became downright bloody. They are serious about their Apple products. It all started at Beijing’s flagship store located in Sanlitun, an area that caters to China’s moneyed, as people lined up outside to get their hands on the device. But as some people can attest to, lining up and patiently waiting your turn isn’t a common social norm practiced by the general public. Accusations of line-jumping abound and while details are sketchy, reports say a laowai (the Chinese term for “foreigner”) employee attacked four people waiting in line with a metal bar. Yikes. The Global Times says that the employee asked a prospective customer to leave, because he was in the “wrong” line. The customer refused, believing he was correct, and that’s when things became physical. Whatever happened, no one can deny the smashed-in glass windows and the hospitalization of four people, leaving a bloody smear on a country where public displays of aggression are rarely this public. During the days following the iPhone 4 launch last year, people banged against glass windows of the same store, eventually forcing them to shut down the store early and call for security reinforcements. In a bizarre twist, Apple employees trapped inside the store filmed the unruly Beijing crowd. Apple only has four retail stores in all of China. Four stores for approximately 1.3 billion people? Hmm, I think it’s time to open up some more stores there.
Remember the German guy who built his own working laser gun? That was nothing. The US Navy successfully tested their version of a weaponized laser, which they used to set fire to a boat off the coast of California. Peter Morrison, program officer for the MLD warship raygun project says, “This is the first time a High Energy Laser, at these power levels, has been put on a Navy ship, powered from that ship and used to defeat a target at-range in a maritime environment.” The test used a scaled-back 15kW beam to set the tiny vessel’s engines on fire (100kW is the arbitrary number for when a laser is considered a genuine combat weapon), but future implications could entail combining several 15kW beams to create much more powerful blasts. These high-energy rayguns could be used “at lightspeed precision” to instantaneously wipe out an opposing ship’s engines (theoretically leading to fewer human casualties), or even zap incoming missiles out of the sky. In this Funny or Die video, Ken Burns takes a #retrospective look on the whole thing from Twitter’s pioneers: Ashton Kutcher, Oprah and even… Sarah Palin. Hey, how do you piece together an accurate history of it when, “It’s next to impossible to piece together the early history of Twitter just because there were not enough tweets about it at the time”?
Picking up your landline phone and dialing in to vote for Clay Aiken on American Idol is so 2003, and texting ‘VOTE’ over and over for the sake of David Archuleta is so 2008. The latest way to vote for your favorite Idol? Via Facebook. Entertainment Weekly reports that ‘American Idol’ has finally decided to take advantage of social media by introducing Facebook voting. Sources tell EW that it will work like this: starting (most likely) during the March 1 show, users can visit a special Facebook page dedicated to voting to cast their ballot a maximum of 50 times during the voting period. Given that voting for your favorite idol will now be only a click away, this new method could give ‘Idol’ an even bigger ratings kick. And ex-Idol judge Simon Cowell seems to think Facebook voting is a good plan, too–it was leaked that he’ll be using the same method when his new show, ‘X Factor,’ debuts this fall. But if you’re one of the few who’s not on Facebook, never fear–’Idol’ fans can still vote old-school style, via toll-free number or text.
The government is cashing in on the social media action Wednesday with the help of C-SPAN, who is currently live streaming the transition to the 112th Congress on its Facebook page. Viewers will be able to watch the floor proceedings, as well as John Boehner’s first speech as speaker of the House. In addition, C-SPAN is encouraging viewers to share their thoughts on the proceedings in the comments section. The live broadcast marks more than the transition to a Republican-controlled House of Representatives–it also highlights C-SPAN’s efforts to expand its social media campaign. C-SPAN Co-President Rob Kennedy said in a statement that providing its audience with an online Congressional Chronicle and social media platforms will help the network continue its mission of encouraging audience participation. (More on Time.com: MySpace Staff To Be Cut In Half, Sale Expected) In addition its Facebook page, the network has recently added a list to its Twitter page of congressional members who tweet, as well as one of Congressional reporters in an effort to further connect itself in the social media world. C-SPAN has also been frequently updating its location in D.C. on FourSquare, adding videos on its YouTube channel and creating C-SPAN Radio iPhone, iPad and Android apps.
AMC’s The Walking Dead will wrap up its first season this Sunday and in honor of the finale we have a little treat for you. Best known for directing a pair of critically-acclaimed prison movies based on Stephen King stories – The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption — Frank Darabont is the man behind the runaway AMC hit zombie show The Walking Dead. Director of the show’s knockout pilot and co-writer of each subsequent episode, Darabont’s imprint is all over the gory show. He spoke to TIME’s Gilbert Cruz about the films that have most influenced his work, from the obvious (Night of the Living Dead and The Exorcist) to the less so (It’s a Wonderful Life). Check out the video of that interview above. The Walking Dead has already been signed for a second season, so expect much more from Darabont to come.
For a lot of guys, rifling through your dad’s hidden stash of Playboys was a right of passage. Hell, before the internet, Hef and his bunnies were probably responsible for initiating entire generations of inquisitive teenage guys awkwardly into puberty. (More on TIME.com: Let’s Go Retro: Best Computer Games from the ’80s) Well, for you *ahem* nostalgics out there — and just in time for the holiday season — you, too, can recapture a sizable chunk of Playboy‘s history with this external hard drive from Bondi, which comes loaded with digital copies of every single issue since the brand’s inception in 1953. For perspective, that’s 57 years worth of Playmates not collecting dust under your bed (or underwear drawer, whatever) sitting nice and organized right there on your desktop. (More on TIME.com: Behind the Scenes of Cyber Monday) Geek.com reports that the hard drive itself is nothing to write home about: with only 250GB of storage space and a hefty price tag at $300 (especially when Cyber Monday saw 2TB drives dip well below the $100-range), you’re not really getting much in terms of hardware. But, then again, it’s every back-issue of Playboy ever, so why not go ahead and spring 300 bucks? You know. For the articles. More on TIME.com: Should Amazon Censor E-Books?
Bill Nye educated thousands of kids and made science cool to learn. Though he’s put those days behind him, the television science personality still wants to educate people on how to lower your carbon footprint at home. “[You need to learn about] a universal awareness of your place in space,” Nye told Techland. “Look at the planet Venus and say, ‘I don’t want that to happen here.’ I hope that will give some people pause to thought about global warming.” (More on TIME.com: Recycling Old Electronics Can Pay Off) Nye is now the executive director of The Planetary Society, the Carl Sagan, Bruce Murray, and Louis Friedman-founded astronomy NGO. Just because his work focuses on things out of this world doesn’t mean he’s not very concerned about what’s happening on our planet. He thinks that we should all pay closer attention, whether that’s by raising awareness with films like Avatar (The Planetary Society just awarded Cameron the Cosmos Award for his work) or doing your own part at home. Nye, for one, has taken steps to eliminate his carbon footprint, and even has a friendly competition with Ed Begley, Jr. on who can be more environmentally conscious at home. The scientist claims he’s winning: Even though temperatures near his home close to Los Angeles, Calif. reached 108 degrees during the last heat wave, Nye only turned on his air conditioning once due to the precautions he took to save energy. He added proudly that his electricity bill is only $10 a month, and that only went up from $7 because the basic cost of administration raised prices across the board. (More on TIME.com: James Cameron’s Avatar DVD Experience How-to: “Sit Close to the TV”) The television personality suggested that it doesn’t take much to save energy and money. Though he’s changed a lot of tech in his home, as he showed Techland when he took us on a tour of his house, simple things like turning off the lights or being more conscientious when buying technology can make a huge difference. ”The car you choose is the single biggest thing that affects the

Each film he directs is more epic than the last. Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Titanic…and, of course, Avatar. That last film, a 3-D extravaganza that quickly became the highest-grossing movie of all time, was re-released August 27 with nine additional minutes of footage. Cameron spoke to TIME’s Rebecca Keegan — author of The Futurist: The Life and Films of James Cameron — about the films that have most influenced his work. The Wizard of Oz, 2001, Jason and the Argonauts – he definitely has a love for the fantastical.
