The harrowing Fukushima Daiichi nuclear meltdown, the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the Chilean Copiapó mine collapse: extraordinarily dangerous circumstances that called for not just human but superhuman solutions. Enter the DARPA Robotics Challenge (DRC), a gauntlet-dropping cool-as-it-sounds competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense in which advanced robotics researchers work to create robots capable of executing “complex tasks in dangerous, degraded, human-engineered environments.” To the winner, the spoils — to the tune of $2 million. The DRC launched back in April 2012, entering its second phase last October, which was when I noticed Boston Dynamics’ Pet-Proto, a bipedal robot capable of sussing its surroundings and navigating complex obstacle courses, including climbing and leaping with uncanny agility from platforms. During DARPA’s two-year competition, teams must work to design, tweak and test either humanoid or non-humanoid robots: agile and durable mechanical servants capable of treading where most humans wouldn’t dare, like exploring collapsed mines or caves, defusing explosive devices and working in deadly radiation-saturated areas. We’re starting to see some of the challenge’s contenders take shape: Carnegie Mellon just announced that it’s building an ape-like robot, but with tank treads undergirding all four limbs. The 10-person research team with CM’s National Robotics Engineering Center calls it a CMU Highly Intelligent Mobile Platform, or CHIMP for short, and it’s part of a project dubbed “Tartan Rescue.” According to Carnegie Mellon News: Though the appearance of … CHIMP, is vaguely simian, its normal mode of locomotion will be much like that of a tank, with the tracks of all four limbs on the ground. This configuration would offer a particular advantage when moving over debris and rough terrain. But CHIMP also can move on the treads of just two limbs when needed, such as when it must use one or more limbs to open a valve, or to operate power tools. Carnegie Mellon Not only that, but look closely at CHIMP’s “foot” treads and yep — that’s a second pair of hands jutting from its robotic heels, sporting two fingers and an opposable thumb. Creepy and cool! CHIMP’s drive joints allow it

In a 1968 musical starring Dick Van Dyke, a vintage racing motorcar takes to the skies with helicopter blades perched on the ends of red and yellow batwings. The musical’s name: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. For some reason, those four words popped into by brainpan when I spotted MSNBC’s story about a “flying Humvee.” Just look at that thing. A Humvee with wings? Vertical takeoff and landing rotors? Wheels that jut from spindling suspensions to accommodate rough set-downs? Kind of fugly-looking, true, but come on, who wants one? (MORE: Jetpack Daredevil Soars at Nearly 200 MPH over Grand Canyon) The military, for starters. Yep, it’s for real: a vehicle that’s in the offing courtesy competing designs from AAI and Lockheed Martin. According to Aviation Week, those designs have just passed muster to enter the second phase of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s “Transformer (TX)” program. That’s “transformer” like the storied Hasbro toys. Talk about high expectations though: DARPA’s Transformer must be a four-seater (to carry a four-person squad) capable of off-road travel, be able to withstand small-arms fire and include the pivotal ability to metamorphose into a full-on aircraft (in 60 seconds) capable of landing or taking off vertically and traveling up to 250 miles (on the ground or in the air) with a single tank of gas. Also, and perhaps the most challenging checkbox: It needs to be pilot-able without special pilot training. No, it’s not going to be weaponized and dogfighting with today’s aces—the idea’s to craft a vehicle capable of working around impassable terrain or deadly obstacles (say a minefield or an area littered with IEDs). If the vehicle encounters an area its suspension can’t traverse or a threat too dangerous to chance, it simply turns into an aircraft and overflies things. Alternatively, says Aviation Week, you could use this sort of thing to transport the wounded, or even run it unmanned, in automatic mode, either to deliver supplies, or just the truck itself. Where AAI’s version looks more like a traditional helicopter—a single horizontal rotor with twin wings

WATSON, it seems, was only the beginning. Not content with building a computer that can win Jeopardy without breaking an electronic sweat, IBM has announced plans to create a “cognitive computer” that will simulate the same number of neurons as the human brain, yet run on less energy than the supercomputer that made Ken Jennings look like an average human being. The company’s SVP and Director of Research John Kelly explained during a Capitol Hill briefing yesterday that “Computer systems are becoming more bioinspired,” which may also account for the desire to create a supercomputer that runs on less than the 85 KW of electricity that WATSON needed; the human brain “runs on 20 watts of electricity,” Kelly said. The project, expected to be completed within the next ten years, is being worked on in cooperation with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The two have already created a computer that simulated the same number of neurons found in a cat. IBM has not confirmed whether the cognitive computer will be named HAL and be unable to open the bay doors, Dave.
The end is near, my friends. A handful of geniuses at Harvard and MIT have developed programmable matter based on origami principles. According to the press release: “Called programmable matter by folding, the team demonstrated how a single thin sheet composed of interconnected triangular sections could transform itself into a boat- or plane-shape—all without the help of skilled fingers… While the Harvard and MIT engineers only demonstrated two simple shapes, the proof of concept holds promise. The long-term aim is to make programmable matter more robust and practical, leading to materials that can perform multiple tasks, such as an entire dining utensil set derived from one piece of foldable material.” The sheet is “a thin composite of rigid tiles and elastomer joints” controlled by programmable actuators that can be triggered in sequence to initiate the appropriate creases so as to create the desired folded shape. Here’s video: According to Wired, the DARPA-backed project could “eventually lead to everything from morphing aircraft to self-styling uniforms to a ‘universal spare part’,” where a soldier could shape the material into various tools as needed. Then a few years after that, we’ll undoubtedly develop shape shifting material that changes and morphs on its own without any human intervention. One day it’ll shift into something we don’t want, like a row of spikes behind your car or an aggressive Max Headroom that goes around biting people. We won’t be able to kill it because it’ll keep morphing and before you know it, boom, we’re all powerless thanks to origami. Nobody ever suspects origami.
