Every year smartphone cameras get better and better, which makes buying a standalone camera seem like less and less of a necessity, even for people who love taking pictures. Yet even the best camera phones (the HTC Droid DNA, for instance) are still limited in important ways. If you want to take pictures that you can print at large sizes without looking grainy or you want to work in low or harsh lighting situations, you need at least a quality point-and-shoot. On the other end, there are those who are out for great pictures who might want to go further with their photography skills but don’t have the money for a digital SLR. You don’t have to spend your entire savings on a camera to get high quality or the ability to change lenses. In this buying guide we’ll help you understand which options and features are most important for what you want to accomplish and offer suggestions ranging from budget all the way up to high-end models for enthusiasts. Our Picks: Point-and-Shoot & Compact Cameras Prices valid as of 3/24/2013 Budget Cameras: Under $100 Budget point-and-shoots are a step up from smartphone cameras for not a lot of money. However, at this price point don’t expect to find a slew of features or many models that offer manual control. Key features to look for are optical zoom and stabilization, fast shutter speeds, HD video recording and compact bodies. Olympus Editor’s Choice: Olympus VR-340 A stand out among budget cameras, the MP VR-340 boasts a metal body and a higher optical zoom than most in this price range. It takes reasonably sharp and color-rich images and 720p HD video both up close (with Macro mode) and far away, thanks to the 10x zoom and image stabilization. Intelligent Auto mode offers the best settings for those who don’t know their ISO from aperture and Program mode gives those who know what they’re doing deeper control. Once the battery runs down, you can charge it from your computer. The VR-340 is not the fastest

How long have I been going to Comic-Con in San Diego? Once upon a time--back in an era called the 20th century--I toted a film camera along and couldn't even see my pictures until I'd gotten home and visited a photo lab. Then I began taking a pocketable digital camera. And in recent years, I ditched the point-and-shoot and simply snapped pictures of my visit with my iPhone. This year, however, I went to the show with a real camera: Sony's NEX-F3, which I borrowed from the company.

In the world of technology, there are three kinds of change. There's the subtle, never-ending process of refinement we call evolution. There's revolution, which is like evolution in fast-forward mode. And then, every once in a while, a product comes along that goes places that nobody was expecting -- radically departing from the norm rather than simply improving on it. Lytro, a new digital camera from a startup of the same name, is one of those radical departures.

Say hello to Lytro, a new consumer-grade camera capable of focusing on multiple points in an image with eye-popping accuracy after you’ve snapped the picture. We first heard about it this summer, and now it has a release timeframe: early next year. What, you thought “4D” was just marketing gibberish? Because 4D implies “time,” and what the heck does a camera have to do with higher dimensions anyway? Let’s talk about light, or “light-field” technology, where a sensor captures not only the color and intensity of a scene, but also the lighting’s directional components (call it “3D light sampling”). According to Lytro, “Unlike a conventional camera that captures light in just two dimensions, the Lytro camera captures the entire light field, which is all the light traveling in every direction in every point in space.” By sampling light in three dimensions and adding a computational element, you can do all sorts of things with the image in post-processing. Like “synthetic aperture photography,” which lets you fiddle with the focus along multiple planes within a picture, “refocusing” the digitally captured image accurately after you’ve snapped it. (MORE: Will an Innovative New Focusing Technology Change the Way We Take Pictures?) Here’s an example that’ll serve for all. In the first image, I’ve tapped on the “butterfly plane” to bring that into sharp focus. Note also the flower the butterfly’s perched on, including its stem and leaves. In the next picture, I’ve tapped the trees in the backdrop. If you want to see more, Lytro has a bunch of images here you can fiddle with to get a better sense for all the planes you can select. The image above, for instance, supports focusing on several intermediary (between the foreground and background) objects. Lytro’s claim to fame: It can capture some 11 million light rays (also known as “11 megarays”—take that, megapixels!). For that, you’ll pay $400 for an entry-level “Graphite” or “Electric Blue” model next year (though you can preorder it here), and you’ll get 8 GB of storage, or about 350 pictures. Step up to the $500 “Red Hot” model and

I’d say no, not really the smallest, not if we’re counting pinhole cameras and all the geeky spy-angled gadgets that’ve been circulating for years. But judging based on general, non-specialty use, I suppose the answer’s “close enough.” We’re talking about what looks like a 1-inch novelty item you might slip on your keychain like a ceramic doodad designed to resemble the real thing. But in this case, the 2.0 megapixel camera from Hammacher Schlemmer (I keep wanting to pronounce that “Hammer Slammer”) with a tiny keychain loop is very much the real thing: It actually works. (MORE: Take a Look at the World’s Smallest Working Electric Motor) “This is the world’s smallest digital camera,” claims HS on the camera’s product page, noting that its measurements are “just over one inch in all dimensions” and that it weights “only half an ounce.” “Reminiscent of devices employed by Cold War-era operatives for intelligence gathering, the camera appears to require Lilliputian agility, yet its one-button operation provides easy picture taking.” What do you get for $99.95? Auto-focus, a 2 MP image sensor that snaps JPG images at 1600 x 1200 pixel resolution or grabs AVI video (yes, video) at 30 frames per second and 640 x 480 pixels. Where does it store all that data? On a microSD card of course—a 2 GB card’s included, but the camera supports up to 32 GB cards. Battery life? Sounds like 30 minutes, though it takes a full hour to charge (via USB). Caveats: It’s awfully small, meaning it’d be easy to lose (or heck, swallow), and okay, taking pictures with something you can barely get a single finger on? Seriously? It’s also pretty low-fi as cameras go—you wouldn’t want to use it for serious or even kind-of-serious photography. The battery life’s pretty awful, no surprise, and then there’s the price: $100 for what’s essentially a thimble-sized piece of novelty tech. What do you think, Techland readers? Would you spring for one? Actually use it for more than impressing your less novelty-inclined co-workers or low-tech relatives at holiday gatherings?

If you listen really closely to this leaked ad for an HTC Windows Phone 7 handset with a 16-megapixel camera, you can hear the sound of compact digital cameras dying a sad, slow death. HTC’s yet-unnamed Windows Phone 7 would top the Altek Leo’s 14-megapixel camera for the highest pixel count in a smartphone. HTC’s handset will also reportedly have two LED flashes for superior lighting. Other details on the phone itself are unknown. CNet speculates that the phone could have a front-facing camera based on the device rendering in the video, but so far Windows Phone 7 doesn’t support front-facing cameras. And as PocketNow points out, the rendering looks nearly the same as HTC’s Desire S, a recently-released Android phone, so the product image could be just a placeholder. Megapixels aren’t everything, of course. The size of the pixels and the quality of the lens are just as important, as are user-friendly features such as face recognition and scene selection. But a pixel count of 16 million still makes a bold statement about the phone’s ability to take good pictures. If HTC’s phone can live up to the promise of this video, digicam makers will have good reason to worry.

According to records released by GfK Retail and Technology, digital camera sales have increased by a wide margin in emerging markets for the first three quarters of 2010. Sales in countries in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and in the Asia-Pacific region rose about 20 percent with the biggest sector in growth found in China and Asia. Fourth quarter results are not expected to show a decline. The company adds digital picture recording devices are seeing an overall boom, especially with those with video capabilities. Multi-media cameras are especially popular in Western Europe’s emerging markets because of their capabilities to connect to social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. Meanwhile, overall digital camera sales have dropped two percent in the US, which GfK attributes to the recession.
The Finepix Real 3D W3 is Fujifilm’s second stab at a consumer-friendly point and shoot camera that takes 3D photos. While the first version met with less-than-favorable reviews last year, the W3 has slimmed down a bit and gotten a little easier to use so it should fare better this time around. It’s still a niche product for a niche market, though. If you’re into 3D and you want something that can show off that brand new 3D TV of yours, Fujifilm’s offering makes for a compelling $500 purchase. Want more video reviews? Click here.
Samsung takes a page from Flip’s playbook with the introduction of the $150 PL90 digital camera, due in September. Says Samsung: “The PL90’s integrated USB connector allows content to be shared with friends and family quickly and easily, with the camera’s plug and play capabilities, including the Auto-install intelli-studio software, and instant access to any computer via the USB. In addition, users will never have to worry about running out of power with the PL90, as the USB connector also allows consumers to charge the battery without a separate power cord.” Join me as we ask what took so long, won’t you? All inexpensive point and shoot digital cameras should have similar functionality. Or more of them should, at least. Other features include a 12.2-megapixel sensor, 4x optical zoom, 2.7-inch LCD screen, and video capture up to 640×480 resolution.
Samsung’s $250 ST80 digital camera aims to make it easy to get your photos out into the wild as effortlessly as possible. The 14-megapixel point-and-shoot features a built-in Wi-Fi connection that can shuttle photos directly to e-mail addresses, Facebook, Picasa, YouTube, or Photobucket. It also supports the DLNA standard, allowing you to send photos to any DLNA-compatible device (TVs, photo frames, computers, and more). Other features include a 3x optical zoom, 3-inch touchscreen, and 720p video recording. The ST80 will be available in September. Samsung also announced the $200 HMX-E10 pocket camcorder, capable of full 1080p video recording and featuring a 270-degree swiveling lens that will allow you “to record from just about any angle.” Other features include a built-in USB connection, HDMI output, and microSD card support. There’s no mention of built-in memory, so it looks like you’ll need to supply your own microSD card. The HMX-E10 will also be available in September.
