Now that 2012 is over, the Wall Street Journal is pondering whether the e-reader era is coming to an end. Although the story stops short of using the D word, it notes that e-reader sales hit their peak in 2011, fell sharply in 2012 and will continue to slide in the years ahead, citing forecasts from IDC and IHS iSuppli. The story harps on the standard reasons for the e-reader’s impending troubles: full-featured tablets can read e-books and do a whole lot more, and the price gap between e-readers and cheap tablets has narrowed, so it’s harder to justify buying a single-purpose reader like the Kindle Paperwhite or Nook Simple Touch. While it’s provocative to declare in general terms that once popular technologies or products are on their way out, I’d rather think about what the actual effects may be. For one thing, e-readers aren’t going away anytime soon, at least not until their unique properties can be matched by inexpensive tablets. The fact that e-readers are cheap, are easy to read even in sunlight and can last for a month or two on a single battery charge means they can be nice to have around, even if you own a more expensive tablet. There’s also something to be said for their mandatory focus on reading, which eliminates the myriad distractions that tablets provide. There’s no threat of forced retirement either, because the e-reader business is different from televisions or other electronics, where vendors must push newer and better technologies in hopes of raising profit margins. Companies like Amazon and Barnes & Noble aren’t making money on hardware; they’re making money on books purchased through the device, so even as the cost of an e-reader approaches zero, it remains a worthy business. If anything, e-readers are more of a sure bet for e-book sales than tablets, where users can stay entertained with free apps and the Web. (It’s worth noting that most e-reader companies that relied on hardware sales for profits gave up the fight years ago.) The question, then, is whether

Amazon came out firing at its press event yesterday with the Kindle Fire tablet and two new Kindle e-readers. Although there weren’t a lot of surprises in terms of tech specs—we’ve heard rumors of the Amazon tablet and a new Kindle before—Amazon did manage to keep images of its new products under wraps until now.
Amazon fired its first serious shots across Apple and iOS’s bow this morning as it unveiled multiple new Kindle slates at surprisingly low prices, including new no-keyboard touch models as well as the not-so-secret headliner, dubbed “Kindle Fire” and built around Google’s Android operating system. “Four years ago, we set out to improve upon the book,” said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos as he took the stage at a press event, right before turning the spotlight on not one but three new Kindle slates. (MORE: Wait, Now Amazon’s Launching Three Kindle Tablets on Wednesday?) The first new device, dubbed “Kindle Touch,” is a grayscale e-ink Kindle but without a dedicated keyboard. Instead, the Touch works just as it sounds: navigation by way of a 6-inch infrared multitouch display. The Touch comes in two models, one with Wi-Fi for $99, another with Wi-Fi and 3G for $149 (Amazon claims 3G support in 100 countries worldwide, and that like prior Kindles, the $149 price is pay-once, no further charges or commitments). Claimed battery life (for both versions) is two months, and they’re available for pre-order now, but won’t ship until November 21. If you don’t need or care much about touch and want to save a few bucks, Amazon’s rebooting the entry-level Kindle, too (call this its second new device). Dubbed simply “Kindle,” the new 5.98-ounce, $79 e-Ink reader will also jettison the older Kindle models’ keyboards, replacing them with a few buttons situated at either side of a navigational rocker switch. The claimed battery life this model’s one month, and it’s available to order immediately. Last but not least, Amazon’s third reveal: the Kindle Fire, a $199 Android-based tablet with a 7-inch multi-touch “vibrant color” IPS display capable of 1024 x 600 pixel resolution at 169 ppi with 16 million colors. It packs a dual-core processor, 8 GB of internal storage, USB 2.0, a standard audio jack and weighs 14.6 ounces. No, there’s strangely no 3G version—for $199 the Fire is Wi-Fi only, though Amazon was quick to add that computer-related system requirements are nil because

Everyone’s talking Amazon’s nifty new watch-out-Apple tablet, supposedly an Android derivative dubbed the “Kindle Fire,” but have you heard about the other two? Yes, the other two. As we head into the eleventh hour, we’re hearing Amazon’s planning not one, not two, but three Kindle tablets for its Wednesday (tomorrow) dog and pony show. The so-called Kindle Fire is rumored to be an aggressively priced 7-inch color LCD Android slate, and may (or may not, depending who you read) be designed to go toe-to-toe with Apple’s iPad. That said, it sounds like Amazon wants to support its “but we just want a decent e-reader!” audience as well, and will announce two black and white Kindles at tomorrow’s event, too. (MORE: Amazon Kindle Tablet: What We Know So Far) The source: Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who says Amazon’s planning two 6-inch grayscale e-ink Kindles, dubbed “Tequila” (low-end) and “Whitney,” (high-end) to complement the color Kindle Fire (dubbed “Hollywood”). Kuo says the low-end model could be priced as low as $99, would include a Freescale i.MX515 processor (comparable to Apple’s A4), and offer ”better system design and lower cost.” The high-end model, by contrast, will add touch controls, 3G support and a speaker, says Kuo. But don’t look for the latter until October, adds Kuo, because of its ”more complicated design and assembly,” though Kuo’s already projecting shipments of both e-readers: 8 million Tequilas and 4 million Whitneys by year’s end, placing the Kindle squarely on top (with 68% total market share) in e-reader shipments. Sidebar: Kuo says TechCrunch has it wrong, and that the Kindle Fire will launch yet this month, not, as TechCrunch claims, in mid-November. If Kuo’s right, Amazon has just three days to make that happen. [via Apple Insider] MORE: Amazon’s Kindle Tablet Won’t Be for Geeks Matt Peckham is a reporter at TIME.
Amazon just announced that their Groupon-like local deals service—Amazon Local—will soon be coming to their ad-supported Kindles when the devices are idle. Smart, especially when you consider that the devices are already synced with your Amazon account and you won’t need to manually enter a credit card number for each purchase. As I wrote previously, Amazon is unrivaled when it comes to making the buying process dangerously easy, and funneling consumers to their daily deals site demonstrates the company’s level of cohesion between their products. (PHOTOS: The First Windows 8 Tablet) The ad-supported model launched earlier in May and has since gone on to become Amazon’s best-selling Kindle yet (though Amazon doesn’t disclose actual shipping numbers). It demonstrates a couple of things: First, for the most part, people don’t seem to mind ads as long as they’re getting a deal, and second, Amazon is probably onto something with their subsidized product model—something none of their competitors have yet copied or built upon. In the long term, it means they’re raking in more money from all the ads they’re selling. “Since we introduced special offers and lowered the price of Kindle to $114 and Kindle 3G to $139 earlier this year, customer response has been overwhelmingly positive – these quickly became our bestselling Kindles,” writes Amazon Kindle director Jay Marine in a press release. “Customers tell us they love the new lower price for Kindle and the money-saving special offers that display when they aren’t reading.” Amazon Local is now available in 44 locations, including New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami and Seattle. Using their dedicated e-reader to funnel their deals site gives them a powerful distribution stream that competitors like Groupon, LivingSocial* or even Google Daily Deals just don’t have. See the full press release here. *edit 9/15/11: Amazon and LivingSocial actually possess a “strategic relationship” in the daily deals space.
In a world filled with tablet computers, smartphones and the like, it can sometimes seem as if e-readers are yesterday’s news. But there’s one particular demographic who, according to a new survey, is gleefully embracing the device over any other—your mothers. Nielsen has released the results of a new study of e-reader users and it shows that 61% of them are female, while 30% are over the age of 55. Both percentages are massive gains from a similar survey carried out just a year ago (at which point 46% of e-reader users were female and only 25% over 55), suggesting that the longer the e-reader exists, the more it skews towards older females (as younger users find newer toys to play with). Interestingly, those newer toys aren’t tablet computers: Tablets have seen a drop in users aged 18-24, according to the same survey, from 23% of all tablet users in 2010 to just 13% now. (MORE: Americans Prefer E-Readers to Tablets (and the Gap is Growing)) This gender shift for e-readers shouldn’t come as a complete surprise; comparisons for magazines and books selling on mobile devices have shown that female readers have preferred e-readers for some time, with women shown to be three times more likely to buy e-books than men and also more likely to use mobile devices for reading as opposed to various other activities such as web browsing or playing Angry Birds. Weirdly, this Nielsen report contradicts the Pew survey from June, which suggested that men were slightly more likely to purchase e-readers than women; one possible explanation for the blip is that they’re buying the devices for their mothers as gifts. Which, admittedly, isn’t entirely impossible, but the likelihood still weighs more toward “different groups answer similar questions differently.” Nonetheless, consider getting your mother an e-reader next time you’re shopping for a gift. Clearly, she’ll be amongst like-minds while using it. MORE: Some Women’s Magazines for ‘Nook Color’ E-Reader Outselling iPad Versions Graeme McMillan is a reporter at TIME.
Amazon’s next Kindle might not just be for bookworms. The company has registered the “kindlescribe.com” and “kindlescribes.com” domains, leading to speculation that the next Kindle will include a stylus for note taking. Fusible discovered the domains, which Amazon registered on August 20. As Business Insider notes, the e-reader could use a touch-sensitive E-Ink display, like the kind used in Barnes & Nobles new Nook, but with the added ability to scribble notes. (MORE: Your Best E-Reader May Be No E-Reader) It would certainly be a logical step for Amazon, which recently started a rental program for college text books. Being able to scratch notes in the margins would come in handy for students, especially because doing so on a printed text book would devalue its resale price. I also would love to see a note-taking Kindle app with synced audio recording, like a digital version of LiveScribe. Although tablets have reduced the need for dedicated e-readers, a lightweight and inexpensive note-taking device could be useful—at least for journalists. It would also help the Kindle differentiate from Barnes & Noble’s Nook and Kobo’s eReader Touch, which remain focused on reading books. For now, all of this is speculation, but the pressure is on for Amazon to compete with the new Nook, which launched in May. And there are signs that it’s about to happen: Earlier this month, Amazon dropped the price of refurbished third-generation Kindles to $99, as it has in the past before introducing a new model.
Sony might have figured out a sneaky but ingenious way to increase sales of its next crop of e-readers: Cash in on the still-existent Harry Potter craze. According to The Register, the next Sony Readers—to be released in November, in time for the holiday rush—will come pre-loaded with all seven Potter books, ahead of the 2012 digital release of the novels from the much-hyped Pottermore website. (MORE: Is Pottermore Good for Harry?) Pottermore launches in October, and Sony is a backer of that site, so it’s not impossible that The Register is correct when it quotes anonymous sources as saying that Sony has paid author JK Rowling “millions” for the early electronic rights to the books (That money has gone to charity, the site claims). If true, then the holiday release of their next readers will have an in-built bonus as the ideal gift for Potter fanatics… and Sony might finally have an in to the serious e-reader market. Now that really would be some trick. MORE: Harry Potter Fans Salivate Over J.K. Rowling’s New Site, ‘Pottermore’ Graeme McMillan is a reporter at TIME.
Slashed prices for refurbished Kindles could be the latest sign that a new version of Amazon’s popular e-reader is imminent. This week, Amazon dropped the price of refurbished, third-generation Kindles to $99 for a Wi-Fi model and $139 for a model with 3G and Wi-Fi. If purchased new, the same Kindles cost $139 and $189, respectively. Amazon has also slashed prices on Kindle accessories. (MORE: Amazon to Lower Kindle to Under $100 by Christmas?) Reading the tea leaves, SlashGear‘s Chris Davies thinks new Kindles are about to land, because the last time Amazon cut prices for refurbished e-readers and accessories, it launched the Kindle 3 a month later. This wouldn’t be the first talk of new Kindles in 2011. Last month, the Wall Street Journal reported a rumor that Amazon was working on two new e-readers in addition to its oft-teased tablet. One model will reportedly be a budget reader, and the other would sport a touch screen, much like Barnes & Noble’s new Nook. Despite the deals on refurbished Kindles, TechCrunch‘s Matt Burns writes that now is a terrible time to buy. With new Amazon e-readers likely around the corner, he argues, buying soon-to-be outdated hardware isn’t worth saving a few extra bucks. But I wouldn’t rule out a purchase if you’re in the market for an e-reader. The Kindle 3 is a fine device, and $99 is a great price. (And as the success of Amazon’s ad-supported Kindles have shown, people love cheap e-readers.) Having the latest technology is great, but so is finishing up the summer with a good book or two. Besides, if Amazon does launch a budget e-reader in a month or two, there’s no guarantee that it won’t be a superfluous upgrade. We’re talking about the simple task of reading text on a page, after all.
Kobo Gets Touchy with $130 E-Reader

Kobo, the perpetual e-reader underdog, is back in action with the $130 Kobo Touch. The Kobo Touch has a 6-inch Pearl E-Ink display, and uses the same kind of touch screen technology found in Sony’s latest Reader Touch Edition, according to The Digital Reader. Infrared sensors around the edges of the screen detect the users’ fingers without the use of a touch-sensitive display panel, allowing for a clearer image on the screen. Of course, the touch screen also reduces the need for physical buttons, and so the Kobo Touch has nothing but a single home button on the front panel. Gone is the bulky directional pad that occupied a chunk of the non-touch Kobo e-reader. Otherwise, the specs are similar to the old Kobo Wi-Fi, with 1 GB of built-in storage (enough for 1,000 books), a microSD card slot for expandable storage and built-in Wi-Fi for downloading books. In the past, Kobo devices have been free of frills, with no web browser, music player or games. I’m guessing the same will be true with the Kobo Touch. Kobo’s not an unknown player in the e-reader game. Its software is pre-loaded on Samsung’s Galaxy Tab and Research in Motion’s Blackberry Playbook, and also available for iOS, Android and Blackberry. Kobo relies on e-book sales, rather than hardware, for profits. But selling hardware is still important, and the company unfortunately aligned its hardware strategy with Borders, a bookseller that has filed for bankruptcy and closed a third of its stores. Amazon and Barnes & Noble, meanwhile, have made e-readers a featured attraction of their respective retail operations. Still, Kobo’s a scrappy competitor that always manages to land on the low end of the pricing spectrum. The Kobo Touch will likely be the cheapest touch screen E-Ink device available — Sony’s Reader Touch costs $229 — when it goes on sale in June. Meanwhile, the non-touch Kobo will get a price drop to $99. But it might not be long before Kobo is overshadowed again. Barnes & Noble is expected to announce its
