Quick, use autochthonous in a sentence. And before you ask, no, it’s not what a chthonous uses to drive to work. How about lorgnette or phrontistery? OK, it’s fair to say that none of these come up much in conversation, but hey, they’re there for a reason and it would be nice if we all took these and other friendless words out for a little fresh air every now and then. Consider that the average speaker of English has mastered about 50,000 words, which seems like a nice big number until you consider that the 20-vol. set of the Oxford English dictionary includes 171,476 of them, which means that for every word we know, there are 2.4 we don’t. For the record, autochthonous is something that originates where it’s found — so sand is autochthonous to the desert, but a turtle is not autochthonous to the top of a fence post. Lorgnettes are those glasses that are held to the eyes by way of a long handle and that at some point in history apparently really were used by people other than rich women in Droopy cartoons. Phrontistery is a place for study and learning — and if you came up 0 for 3 in all of these, maybe you should have spent more time studying and less time partying during your four years at the phrontistery your parents paid perfectly good money for. But we don’t have to remain linguistic nincompoops. The rise of the web means that spelling, definitions and even usages are available simply by typing any stray aquilege (a plant of the genus Aquilegia) or minacious (something that threatens or foreshadows evil developments) you may encounter into a Google field. The question is, Does this really help you learn? Do the words stick, or do they run out of your head the second you pour them in? Dedicated vocabulary websites help, and Vocabulary.com, which launched in 2011 and is produced by the same folks who created The Visual Thesaurus, has been among the leaders in the sector.
Is handwriting on the way out? Is scribbling with a pencil or ink pen on actual paper destined to become a cultural relic? The BBC wonders in a brief piece that presents the arguments in two columns, one that views (cursive) writing as critical — a matter of heritage and art, the other suggesting that we’re clinging to handwriting for mere nostalgic reasons. I don’t have the answer, but my penmanship has been in decline for years because I write almost never (just to sign checks or mortgage documents, and even then, it’s chicken scratch — were my signature an EKG chart, I’d be dead). A decade ago, finishing my graduate degree, I was filling spiral-bound notebooks with tiny, barely legible notes — for some goofy reason, I liked to cram two written lines between each 9/32 of an inch horizontal writing space. In the 2000s, I switched to a notebook computer for everything, because I can type and revise a lot faster than I can scribble something down or erase and rewrite it. I’ve since folded smartphones and tablets in, my notes automatically synchronized, easily accessible and readily available for copying, printing or emailing. I know many who’ll swear by legal pads and no. 2 pencils, who — even if they eventually have to type things out — prefer to write by hand. They argue that by actually writing things out, they’re slowing the creative process down, allowing themselves more time to consider what they have to say. Consider the hypothetical advantages if you know you’re going to revise what you’ve written anyway — as they say, most of writing well is revision. And yet Jeffrey Reaser, the North Carolina State University linguistics professor interviewed for the piece makes a powerful point: “The resources that schools are given, the most important resource probably is time. There’s only so many hours in the school year, we have to think about what really fits in there in terms of our priorities.” What do you think? Pen and paper are as much

As I write this, I’m watching a presentation in a classroom of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. Nothing remarkable about that — except that the gent doing the presenting is in Philadelphia, and I’m at the school’s San Francisco branch. That’s the whole point of the presentation, though. The event in question is a demo of a joint project between Wharton and Cisco to use Cisco’s telepresence technology to make long-distance learning feel more like traditional in-person instruction. The demo was possible because Wharton now has telepresence-equipped classrooms in Philadelphia and San Francisco. Each has multiple cameras that can send live 1080p video feeds, covering the entire room, to the other classroom, plus a projection screen that lets a remote instructor appear in slightly-larger-than-life form at the front of the other room. Screens at the back of each classroom show every seat in the other location, so everybody can see everybody else; displays on the side walls can show presentation slides or other content, or bring in folks in yet other telepresence-equipped rooms. How’s it work? The demo, at least, was impressive. The distant presenters did look like they were being projected on a giant screen, and the audio, while completely comprehensible, was a tad tinny. So it didn’t feel like mind-boggling virtual reality. But all the video was hiccup-free, and any lag was undetectable, so the conversation between coasts was surprisingly natural. It’s not tough to imagine teachers and students quickly forgetting about all the technology and settling into a classic mode of teaching and learning. For Wharton, the system can supplant its current approach to its bicoastal campuses, which involves professors flying cross-country to teach a few hours of courses in person, then jetting back to their home base. That means that over time, telepresence could be a moneysaver as well as an innovation and a convenience. I asked one Cisco executive about the initial cost of Wharton’s facilities, the first of their kind at an educational institution, and he explained that the school’s investment includes Cisco’s

Remember handwriting? The old-timey art of transferring ink or charcoal to paper has been largely sidelined by technology, but a technology-infused pen is looking to bring handwriting into the current century. The Lernstift pen packs motion sensors that analyze your chicken scratch — you can use the pen with standard paper or simply write words in mid-air — and a vibrating motor that buzzes when the pen detects errors. Future versions will sport a Wi-Fi connection to be leveraged by an open development platform that people can use to create specialized apps for the pen as it connects to various devices. There are two modes for the pen: calligraphy and orthography. Calligraphy mode senses “if a letter is written wrong or illegibly,” according to the company, and then vibrates once to alert the user to the error. With the Orthography setting, “the pen vibrates once for a misspelled word and twice to point out grammatical errors in a sentence.” Note that the pen simply alerts the user that an error has been identified; it’s then up to the user to figure out the problem and correct it. It’s a teaching pen, not a spellchecker. There are a couple potential hurdles the Lernstift needs to overcome before it can be branded a success. For starters, the pen is being crowdfunded and is currently in the early stages of raising money. The company – based in Germany — says that, starting in March, it’s looking to “raise 200,000 to 1.5 million EUR via crowdfunding” before deciding “whether we want to A) continue building the pen with our own means or B) sell the idea by licensing the patent.” There’s no price for the pen yet, either, though the company has revealed component costs to be “between 50 and 80 EUR.” Second, and perhaps more importantly, the pen needs to be accurate. This seems an awful lot like the handwriting version of voice recognition, a technology that’s been in development for decades and still isn’t 100% accurate. People write differently just as they

A new study shows that students who use iPads in the classroom score better in literacy tests than those who don’t. Educators in Auburn, Maine began instructing 266 kindergarteners using the iPad 2 this fall, and those who used the tablet scored higher on literacy tests and were more enthused about learning.

I should know better than to look at a new Apple creation and call it an outright failure. The company's batting average is too high lately. There's not a lot of room for nay-saying. Still, I think a dose of skepticism doesn't hurt with Apple's latest announcement of iBooks Textbooks, a platform for publishing interactive, digital textbooks on the iPad.

Apple debuted the holy grail of textbooks on Thursday in New York City. The books are undeniably cool: they will integrate videos, photos and interactive graphics, make taking notes a breeze and be easy to navigate — all features that will undoubtedly make Apple's textbooks more enjoyable and engaging to students than the current dead tree versions. But the problem Apple ignored in their announcement is how to actually get their reinvented textbooks into the hands of students.
