Facebook’s music integration is finally here, and it’s unlike any sort of music sharing we’ve seen before as part of the Open Graph. Ostensibly you’ll be able to keep track of what your friends are listening to via Facebook’s new real-time Ticker, which Zuck promises will deliver updates in—his actual words—“real-time serendipity.” When a friend is consuming media—like listening to a song on Spotify, Rdio, or Rhapsody—the activity itself shows up in the Ticker for you to see. From there, you can click on the title to listen to what your friend is listening to. (LIST: 10 Things You Shouldn’t Do On Facebook) As Reuters reports: “…if users listen to music on Spotify or MOG via Facebook, it will show up in the just-launched mini news-feed that appears on the right of the opening page. If you make a new playlist, it will appear in the main newsfeed. Your friends can then see what you are listening to in either of those feeds, and choose to listen as well.” “We used to go to our friends’ houses to browse their record collections,” said Spotify’s Daniel Ek as he took the stage at Facebook’s f8 conference. “But we haven’t been able to do this online.” He’s exactly right. As I wrote back in June, turning music into a social experience on the web is incredibly challenging. Many have tried. Most have failed. Apple’s “Ping” comes to mind as one of the more glaring failures in the Cupertino-based company’s recent product releases. Ping, a social network predicated on music sharing, didn’t as much combust into flames as it crawled into a quiet corner to be lost and forgotten. (MORE: Screenshot Tour of Facebook’s New ‘Timeline’ Interface) Turntable.fm works brilliantly in the social space because it’s equal parts clever and indulgent: Everyone considers their taste in music topnotch. We love the act of showing songs to others because it makes us feel good. And it’s this reason why I have a hard time believing that integrating music with Facebook is actually going to

At today’s Facebook f8 conference, Mark Zuckerberg took to the stage to announce the biggest overhaul to the social network we’ve seen since 2008: “Timeline,” a new kind of profile. Zuckerberg introduced the new Facebook feature as “all your stories, all your apps and a new way to express who you are.” Previously your old information published on Facebook disappeared at the bottom of your profile in chronological order, kind of like “falling off a cliff.” (LIST: 10 Things You Shouldn’t Do On Facebook) “With timeline, now you have a home for all the great stories you’ve already shared,” writes Samuel W. Lessin, a product manager at Facebook on the company’s blog. “They don’t just vanish as you add new stuff.” The new timeline user interface is incredibly visual and unlike any type of profile we’ve seen on a social network. It starts with a giant cover photo sitting above a person’s profile (Zuck used his dog, Beast). When you scroll down, your Facebook activity is given a heavy visual treatment with photos and videos, something akin to Tumblr. When you click on a story it’ll double in size, allowing you to explore it more fully. Come across something that you want to look into more later? You can star your favorites or hide stories you don’t want to see. The new timeline won’t be available for a few weeks, although once it rolls out you’ll be able to either publish it immediately or spend a couple of days curating it, adding and removing content that you want people to see. Really, really cool stuff, Zuck. “Awesome” might even be in order. PHOTOS: Zuckerberg Somehow Qualifies for Mortgage, Buys House Chris Gayomali is a reporter at TIME.
Do you “like” Facebook? Pretty soon, you may have the chance to also mark things “read,” “listened,” “watched” and “want” on Facebook as well. According to a TechCrunch source, Facebook may be unrolling these new features at its “f8″ developer conference later this week. As the conference gets closer, everyone is speculating about Facebook’s next move. In addition to the new buttons, there is talk of a “major” profile redesign. And the social networking service could finally launch a long-rumored music partnership with Spotify and Rhapsody. The conference happens on Thursday, so we’ll see what happens. (MORE: Facebook Makes Another Big Announcement with ‘Subscriptions’) We’ve fretted over what kind of music partnership could benefit both Facebook and other media streaming services before, but this is the first time we’ve heard something about extra buttons. Mashable says it’s all part of a larger move toward social commerce – and would allow companies to segment specific data rather than through the generic “Like” button. It’s starting to sound all a bit much to keep up with, especially for Facebook users. It’s a virtual goldmine for online advertisers, though. Still, who wants to take bets that with a possible redesign, some users will be clamoring for a “dislike” button? I know where my money is at.
Just to offset today’s item about Facebook engaging in slightly creepy behavior, we’ll toss some kudos their way for having possibly reinvented the conference name tag. You know the ones: those dangly, laminated, lanyard-strung tags looped around the overstressed necks of every conference- or convention-goer in modern history. Well, for Facebook’s upcoming 2010 f8 developers conference, the company’s in-house design team created something that’s part note pad, part quick map, part tracking device (via RFID), and all cool. They even made the names readable! Sadly, you probably were not invited to f8. (We weren’t either, but Facebook should feel free to send along a badge, anyway.) However, with any luck these things will catch on, and the next time you attend the, say, Potato Industry Leadership Institute’s annual shindig, you might be sporting a nifty new tag. Update: As has been pointed out, these badges were from last year’s f8 conference. Which makes us a little miffed that these things haven’t taken the conference world by storm yet. What’s the hold up?
