“Hyperlocal” has been a buzzword for quite some time, based around the idea that the Internet should be talking to you about your neighborhood in particular, and not just some homogenous “out there.” But according to a new Pew Institute study, there’s one thing in particular users want from their hyperlocal surfing: food. While television still dominates in the local news space, with newspapers taking the top spot for sourcing community events, as well as information on local culture, government and police actions, the Internet has become the top source for information about restaurants and bars for the majority of Americans. Clearly, Yelp has done its job well. (MORE: Study: 28% of U.S. Adults Use Phones for Directions) According to the survey results, although the Internet only tops one particular vertical, it’s seemingly become the go-to second choice for local information. For the 79% of Americans who are online, the Internet was named as either the first or second most relied-upon source of information for 15 of the 16 topics listed (for adults under 40, it jumps to first place in 11 of those 16 topics), with 64% of those asked admitting that they use at least three different types of media to get information about their community in general. The takeaway from this survey for local businesses? Advertise everywhere. But if you serve food, make sure that your social media is so spotless, you could eat your dinner off it.
Google Gobbles Up Zagat

Google has announced that it’s acquiring Zagat Survey, the dining guide known for its 30-point rating scale and snippets of quotes from restaurant customers. “Moving forward, Zagat will be a cornerstone of our local offering—delighting people with their impressive array of reviews, ratings and insights, while enabling people everywhere to find extraordinary (and ordinary) experiences around the corner and around the world,” Google’s Marissa Mayer wrote on the official Google blog. For years, Google built up its local business database by scraping information from competitors such as Yelp and TripAdvisor, whether they liked it or not. But lately, Google’s been trying to gather its own information with Google Places, and in July the company removed all third-party reviews from its local Place pages. (However, Google still scrapes Yelp content in its Google Places iPhone app, TechCrunch has reported.) (MORE: Google Places: Google’s Own Local Recommendation App) Acquiring Zagat amounts to a shortcut for Google on the dining front. The search giant can now draw on Zagat’s reviews, details, hours of operation and must-eat menu items to keep its Place pages up-to-date in more than 100 cities. The acquisition may also alleviate some of the difficulties Google has run into with user-generated content, such as mean-spirited businesses reporting their competitors as permanently closed. Unanswered in Google’s announcement, however, is what will become of the Zagat guide in its current form. Right now, users pay $25 per year for access to Zagat’s ratings. But I can’t imagine that Google will keep this information locked behind a pay wall, and if Zagat ratings are available for free through Google searches, I can’t imagine many people wanting to pay a membership fee to see them. My guess is Google will keep offering paid Zagat memberships, but will ultimately let the program languish as the information migrates to Google’s own search services. Founders Nina and Tim Zagat said they will “remain active in the business as co-Chairs, helping to ensure that the combination of Zagat’s and Google’s assets and capabilities will maximize our product quality and growth.”

Don’t get me wrong: I hate my iPhone. I only got one after I accidentally left my Droid on a bus. So I’m not coming to you as a wide-eyed enthusiast, the sort who thinks everything that Apple makes is pure gold. I don’t play Angry Birds, I don’t have a set of bejeweled Hello Kitty cases, and every day I think wistfully of the BlackBerry I had a few phones ago. That said, there are some awesome apps on the iPhone, especially for gastronomes. In no particular order, here are 10 of my favorites.

If you’ve ever suspected that maybe, just perhaps, you’re not really doing social media right, here’s something that might reinforce that feeling for you: A man got a free steak dinner delivered to him as he disembarked a plane following a long flight, and all because of one cheeky tweet. Social media consultant Peter Shankman—who has 100,00 Twitter followers—joked on Twitter as he was on a flight to Newark: “Hey @Mortons – can you meet me at newark airport with a porterhouse when I land in two hours? K, thanks. :)” When he landed, he was met by a stranger in a tuxedo, holding a sign with his name on it in one hand and a bag from Morton’s Steakhouse in the other. (MORE: Rapper ‘The Game’ Scores Legal Trouble with Twitter Prank) As Shankman explains: “Alex, from Morton’s Hackensack walks up to me, introduces himself, and hands me a bag. He proceeds to tell me that he’d heard I was hungry, and inside is a 24 oz. Porterhouse steak, an order of Colossal Shrimp, a side of potatoes, one of Morton’s famous round things of bread, two napkins, and silverware. He hands me the bag. I. Was. Floored.” This is really a win-win for everyone involved; Shankman gets a free steak, Morton’s gets the positive PR from the experience (like this post!) for the price of a steak dinner, and we all get to learn the benefits of asking for free things on Twitter. The only downside is that now that Morton’s has done this, it’s unlikely to be as valuable a PR tool for other restaurants. Clearly, we’ll all have to up our game in order to maximize this opportunity.
App of the Week: Alfred, the Personal Recommendations Robot

Is there a more universal #firstworldproblem than being stumped on where to eat for dinner? Sure, there are apps like UrbanSpoon, whose randomized restaurant picks take a bit of gamesmanship. And, of course, there are more democratic choices like Yelp or even City Search. But the Achilles heel of crowdsourced reviews is that it’s impossible for them to be personal; they draw their collaborative power from a pseudonymous user base, each contributor opining based on a far-ranging set of preferences. Sometimes this will land you at joints that are decidedly ho-hum, at least according to you. (MORE: Ask Techland: Best Methods for No-Touch Cellphone Use) Which is why this week’s App of the Week is a credible alternative. Alfred is a personal recommendations robot that gets “smarter” the more you use it. Developed by Clever Sense and released two weeks ago in July, they’re dubbing it a “Pandora for the real world”; a description that’s refreshingly apt. So far, Alfred’s generated 20,000 downloads with more than a million recommendations generated. Download it for free here. The premise is simple: You answer a few short questions and input in a few of your favorite haunts broken down into categories like dinner, coffee & tea, nightlife, brunch etc. Alfred will then present you with a list of similar local businesses that you assign either a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” if you’ve already been there. After flying through a few local businesses (which are gorgeously assorted), Alfred begins to “learn” your tastes and develops a better sense for the types of spots you frequent. You can further organize the ideas Alfred throws out there by filtering price, location and keywords.

At last, 3D chocolate printing has arrived. We can switch off the internet, shut down CERN, and turn our universities into campuses of poetry. Our species has reached the pinnacle of science. Researchers at the U.K.’s University of Exeter have developed a 3D fabricating machine that manufactures chocolate objects to your chosen design. So if you want your loved one’s name, or a special message, or an unusually tasty insult carved out of the purest chocolate, all you have to do is pick a font and a flavor. The machine can do the rest. Project leader Dr. Liang Hao says, “What makes this technology special is that users will be able to design and make their own products. In the long term it could be developed to help consumers custom-design many products from different materials but we’ve started with chocolate as it is readily available, low cost and non-hazardous. “There is also no wastage as any unused or spoiled material can be eaten, of course!” he added, wiping his lips with the back of his hand. (MORE: Which has the shorter shelf-life, e-books or chocolate syrup?) But wait, what’s this? It turns out that 3D chocolate printing isn’t a new idea after all. Take a look at the Fab@Home site and you’ll find photos of edible chocolate structures built back in 2007. I wouldn’t eat them now if I were you, though. What the Exeter team has achieved is a step forward from those initial chocolatey experiments. The latest prototype is suitable for use by food manufacturers and catering companies, who are quivering with the thought of the profits they could make from custom food designs for special occasions. Either that or they’re having some sort of sugar rush or something. The ultimate destiny of 3D printers, of course, is as an all-purpose kitchen appliance that eats trash and spits out anything you ask it to: underwear, utensils, screwdrivers, you name it. No reason why any of those can’t be made out of chocolate. No reason at all.
It starts with an incredibly delicious-looking picture of grilled cheese and tomato soup. But beyond that, Jonathan Kaplan has bigger plans for his new restaurant chain, The Melt. Kaplan, founder the company that created the now-defunct Flip camera, wants to leave his mark on the fast food industry with grilled cheese and high tech gimmicks. Here’s how it works: You visit The Melt’s website on your smartphone. You choose a sandwich and soup from the menu, and the site generates a QR code that you can scan at the store, skipping the line and paying through the phone. According to BusinessWeek, the restaurant will also develop location-tracking smartphone apps so it can start preparing your food as you get close. A specialized oven, developed with Swedish appliance maker Electrolux, can reportedly toast a perfect cheese sandwich in less than a minute. You may laugh at the concept, but The Melt’s Silicon Valley investors aren’t kidding. Sequoia Capital has pumped an undisclosed amount of money into the company, which plans to open 20 restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area at a cost of $500,000 to $1 million per location. Celebrity chef Michael Mina is on the board of directors and is helping with the menu. The Melt aspires to become a national chain for slightly upscale fast food, kind of like Chipotle. But is the tech gimmickry going to help The Melt become the next great chain? I must admit to being intrigued by the location-tracking order concept. Fear of cold food is one reason that I avoid mobile ordering apps (like Chipotle’s), so maybe this is the start of a fast food revolution. Still, that doesn’t mean anything unless you’ve got a delicious sandwich. Let’s hope there’s some truth in The Melt’s advertising.

It doesn’t need to be reiterated but if you’re thinking of starting a business, make sure it has “social” in the name somewhere. Social is so very, very white hot right now. Even Pepsi’s getting in on the social action with its new “Social Vending System” machines. They’re just ordinary vending machines, right? Right?! Let’s ask Pepsi: “Using digital technology, PepsiCo’s Social Vending System enables any user to gift a friend by selecting a beverage and entering the recipient’s name, mobile number and a personalized text message. There’s also the option to further personalize the gift with a short video recorded right at the machine. The gift is delivered with a system code and instructions to redeem it at any PepsiCo Social Vending system. When the recipient redeems their gift, they’re given the option of either thanking the original sender with a gift of their own or paying it forward and gifting a beverage to another friend.” Aw, see now I feel bad for being so sarcastic about the whole thing. This is actually kind of cool. For the time being, there will be only one Social Vending System in existence and it’ll be found “at the National Automatic Merchandising Association’s One Show in Chicago, April 27-29,” according to Pepsi’s press release. That’s like a who’s who in the automatic merchandising game, so it ought to be quite a scene–all those movers and shakers gifting Pepsis to each other. Livin’ large, as they say. They still say that, right? More on TIME.com: Social Shopping Is Big Business, but What’s So ‘Social’ About It?
Everybody loves those hidden gem restaurants, but it’s hard to find them without occasionally having a misstep. Luckily, there’s an app for that. With the help of FourSquare, donteat.at will let you know if a restaurant is likely a lovable hole-in-the-wall or an actual health code violation. Despite its somewhat bitter moniker, donteat.at isn’t fueled by user reviews of one angry diner upset with slow service. Instead, it uses constantly-updated data on New York City health code violations, and alerts users when they check in to an offending restaurant. This convenient app is appealing partially because of its simplicity–there’s no interface beyond its landing page, and users only need to sign up once. After that, no news is good news, and you’ll only get a notification if the restaurant you just checked in at is in violation of the health code. While donteat.at currently is only for New York City restaurants, Stoller plans to expand to new cities soon (San Francisco is up next). But for now, at least it will let you eat in the Big Apple without any worry or regret.
Taking a cue from the likes of Bing and the latest foodie startups, Google has jumped on the recipe search bandwagon with its latest feature, Google Recipe View, which debuted yesterday. Luckily for the less tech-savvy home cooks everywhere, using it is pretty simple–just search for an ingredient or dish as usual, and when you get the results, click the “recipes” filter button in the left-hand column. Once you’ve got a full arsenal of recipes at your disposal, the recipes filter on the left lets you narrow your search instantly by specific ingredient, preparation time and calorie count, until you find the perfect recipe. Hungry yet? It’s hard not to be, with the entire Internet’s worth of recipes at your disposal.
Oh, to be a Phillies fan. The team may very well make the playoffs this year but even better, iPhone owners at Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park can now order food right to their seats using MLB.com’s free Fan Direct app. The stadium has apparently been running trials of the service since Monday, and is expected to officially unveil it this weekend, according to PC World. Most food items are on the menu, and early reports indicate that it takes about ten minutes to get your order delivered to your seat. Beer is NOT available, which is unfortunate, but that may be more of a legal issue than anything else, seeing that you can’t really card someone remotely. For the rest of this season and possibly into the playoffs—assuming the Phillies make the playoffs—the service will be available only at Citizens Bank Park, though if it catches on, it may be rolled out to other stadiums next year.
It’s National Doughnut Day, which in the world of geekdom gives us a reason to drive on over to the local Krispy Kreme (get one free!) and watch The Simpsons. Doughnuts and the lovable Homer go hand-in-hand (or, doughnut-in-mouth) in my mind, which makes watching this clip obligatory.
Izzy’s Ice Cream in St. Paul, Minnesota, has just implemented an RFID system used to update its available ice cream flavors in store and over the internet in real time. So if you’re wondering if Mocha Chunka Munka Bean (that’s a thing, right?) is in the dipping cabinet, you can find out before you leave work in the middle of the day to feed your insatiable ice cream habit. The system seems relatively straightforward: “The nameplates for each flavor have RFID chips built in, which are then read by antennae anchored in the dipping cabinet. The inventory is automatically updated simply through the act of an employee changing flavors in the dipping cabinet. That act triggers an inventory update, which in turn publishes the current flavors to multiple channels: the in-store screen, Izzy’s website, Twitter, Facebook and email subscribers for individual flavors.” Yes, you can “subscribe” to your favorite flavors and get alerts when they’re available. As a technology enthusiast who grew up in Minnesota, I’m torn. I can’t help feeling that subscribing to ice cream alerts promotes unhealthy eating habi—ooh! They just added the Strawberry Cheesecake flavor!

Un. Be. Lievable. The familiar Torani-labeled bottles that you see at your local coffee shop come in a wide variety of flavors. Does bacon have to be one of them? Apparently, yes. I’d consider myself a bacon lover through and through but I draw the line at Torani’s suggestion that I add this bacon syrup “to cocktails, lattes, sauces, and more.” I’m down with the “sauces and more” part but not the Manhattans, milkshakes, Old-Fashioneds, and Bloody Marys listed under the suggested uses section of the product page. Oh who the hell am I kidding? I’d at least try it. via Consumerist
