The Techland crew presses on with our favorite gadgets and holiday gift ideas of 2011. On Tuesday, Graeme likened this feature series to a procession of reindeer, but as the group's token Jewish guy, I'm considering it a set of candles in the Hanukkah menorah, of which my list is the third. The presence of eight favorite gadgets on this list is totally coincidental. I digress. Onward!

MacBook Air style with a more PC-like pricetag: That’s the promise of Acer’s new S3 ultrabook. At $900, it beats Apple’s lowest-priced 13-inch MacBook Air by a full $400 while measuring up almost identically in weight and thickness. So what’s the catch? No catch! Okay, there’s a catch. But first, the specs! Dual-core Intel Core i5 processor running at 1.6GHz 4GB of memory 320GB hard drive for file storage, plus a second 20GB solid state drive that houses the operating system (Windows 7 Home Premium) and maintains the computer’s state for resuming from standby in less than two seconds Card reader, two USB ports, HDMI output Just over half an inch thick, just under three pounds, measures about 12.5 inches wide and about 8.5 inches long. So what do you get for $900? It’s fast. It’s very portable. The keyboard’s pretty good. The resume-from-standby time is amazing, and it looks great. (MORE: Eight New Tablets and Ultrabooks You Should Know About) What’s missing? Battery life leaves a bit to be desired: You’ll get around four hours if you’re really pushing it, maybe four and a half if you’re moseying. Gaming? Meh. Serious gaming? No! The screen doesn’t get all that bright, either. And if you’re comparing this to a MacBook Air, you also lose the backlit keyboard and the Acer’s screen resolution is 1366×768 versus 1440×900 with the MacBook Air. All things considered, the Acer S3 makes a good choice for a 13-inch notebook thanks in large part to its form factor and its nimble performance. The biggest strike against it is its somewhat lackluster battery life. Other than that, you’re getting a lot for well shy of a grand. Want more videos like this?
This article originally appeared on Technologizer… Ten gadgets and services whose existences were nasty, brutish, and short. Companies in Silicon Valley are fond of saying that they like to “fail fast.” They mean that it’s virtuous to try lots of new things, but to give up quickly when something’s not working. But sometimes they fail fast in a manner that’s nothing to brag about. They invest millions (or hundreds of millions) of dollars in a new product and hype it to the Heavens—and then kill it after only a few months, if they ever release it at all. (PHOTOS: A Brief History of the Computer) From this day henceforth, HP’s TouchPad may be the poster child for bizarrely short-lived tech products. But it has lots of company—famously infamous flops such as Audrey, the G4 Cube, and Foleo. Let’s honor them, shall we? For this list, I considered only products that were on the market for less than a year, or which never quite made it to consumers, period. Every item that made it was from a large company that should have known better. And while they all share the indignity of a short, embarrassing life, they represent multiple types of failure. (Some of them should never have left the drawing boards in the first place; others could have been great if they’d been given more time to succeed.) Thanks to Ross Rubin for suggesting this story and nominating lots of products for it.

Writing my TIME.com Technologizer column this week was a form of primal scream therapy. It feels like I’m spending more time than ever wrestling with new gadgets that don’t meet the fairly modest bar of consistently being able to do what they’re supposed to do for more than ten minutes at a time without crashing, choking, or displaying a cryptical error message. It drives me a little nuts sometimes. In the column, I try to figure out why new stuff seems to be getting increasingly shaky. Executive summary: manufacturers think of everything as a beta, are inclined to fix problems in post-release firmware upgrades, and are working so quickly that there’s no margin for error. (MORE: This Gadget Just Doesn’t Work! Why New Tech Products Are Increasingly Unsatisfying) So what’s a gizmo fan to do? Well, you could just never buy anything, or only buy products that have been around forever. That would be one way to avoid problems. But you’re reading Techland. Unless you’re my mom—hi, Mom!—you’re going to buy stuff when it’s still fresh and exciting. And you understand that the stuff you buy might be imperfect. For many folks, I think the most logical thing to be is a semi-late-early-adopter. You’re still an early adopter—one of the first people to try new products and new categories of products. You just aren’t someone who buys them the very moment they go on sale. (MORE: Do Gadgets Really Make Our Lives More Complicated?) Instead, you wait long enough to give hardware makers time to fix the crippling glitches they should have fixed before they shipped the product. (Or, in less happy circumstances, to determine that they aren’t going to fix those crippling glitches and the product in question should be ignored.) Reviews such as the sort folks like me write are helpful here, but ones from real everyday people are at least as important. If you wait for at least a few weeks before picking up a potentially exciting new device, you can check out sites such as Amazon.com
