Previously sliced and diced into varying increments and doled out between Gmail and other Google services, the search giant has simplified things by melting its free storage offering into a single 15-gigabyte chunk to be used as you see fit. Per the Google Drive Blog: [I]nstead of having 10 GB for Gmail and another 5 GB for Drive and Google+ Photos, you’ll now get 15 GB of unified storage for free to use as you like between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos. With this new combined storage space, you won’t have to worry about how much you’re storing and where. For example, maybe you’re a heavy Gmail user but light on photos, or perhaps you were bumping up against your Drive storage limit but were only using 2 GB in Gmail. Now it doesn’t matter, because you can use your storage the way you want. You can check your current storage here and purchase more if you need it. You may not see the 15-gigabyte clump right away: Google says the changes “will roll out over the next couple of weeks.” Bringing it all together: 15 GB now shared between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos [Google]

In the never-ending turf war between tech titans like Microsoft and Google, a new service called Kloudless is trying to make some peace. The free extension for Google’s Chrome browser lets you send e-mail attachments directly to online storage services such as Google Drive, Dropbox and Box. It also lets you attach files directly from these services without downloading them to your computer first. Although Kloudless only works with Gmail for now, support for Microsoft Outlook is on the way. Webmail providers are turning to cloud storage as a way to let people attach extra-large files. Gmail, for instance, lets you attach files directly from Google Drive. Outlook.com has a similar feature, but uses Microsoft’s own SkyDrive service instead. Yahoo recently partnered with Dropbox for attachments without file size limits. The problem is that each webmail provider is picking a single online storage service–usually its own–to handle attachments. Want to attach a SkyDrive file in Gmail? Too bad. Want to send an attachment from Outlook.com directly to Google Drive? Not a chance. Sure, you can download the files you want from your service of choice, then re-upload them, but that’s a hassle. Jared Newman / TIME.com So rather than making its own cloud storage service, Kloudless says it’s making existing ones “play nicely with each other.” It’s a breath of fresh air considering that Google, Microsoft and storage startups like Dropbox have little intention of playing nice on their own. Setting up Kloudless was easy enough. Once you install the Chrome extension, you must allow the service to access your Gmail account, and then sign into any cloud storage services you use. TechCrunch reports that Kloudless doesn’t store any of your data; it just acts as a pipeline from one service to the other, and claims to use “bank-grade security” to transfer data. Kloudless also lets you set up automatic copying or transferring of certain files. For example, you can tell the service to send any .XLS from your boss directly to a specific folder in Dropbox. Or, you can tell it to delete all attachments

Google has brought a couple of much-needed features to Google Drive, including a solution for the age-old dilemma of how to send extremely large files. Gmail users who’ve opted into the new compose message style may now insert files directly from Google Drive, the company’s free online storage service. For files you’ve already stored online through Google Drive, this is basically a shortcut for sharing them with other people. (The new tool also lets you upload files directly to Google Drive from within Gmail before attaching them.) Google Drive attachments can be much larger than standard e-mail attachments. The size limit for attached files through Google Drive is 10 GB, compared to 25 MB for regular attachments. So essentially, Google has tackled a classic file-sharing frustration: By sending a file through Google Drive, you needn’t worry about whether the attachment is too large to go through. Although other cloud storage services, such as Dropbox, can also help with sharing large files, Drive’s integration with Gmail makes for a simpler solution because you never have to leave the compose window to add a file. You can upload files to Google Drive through the web or by installing the desktop app, which lets you drag and drop files using your PC’s file system. Google The other big improvement for Google Drive is the ability to edit spreadsheets using Drive’s iOS or Android apps. Users can edit text by double-tapping on any cell, and can also change fonts, resize columns and sort data. Google added document editing for Android last February, and for iOS last September, but spreadsheets have been read-only until now. Still missing, though, is the ability to edit Google Drive documents offline through its mobile apps. Offline editing is supported on PCs using Google’s Chrome browser, but for now only offline viewing is supported on Drive’s mobile apps. Also, it’s a bit surprising that Google Drive attachments in Gmail aren’t yet available on mobile devices. Given that wireless bandwidth is more precious on smartphones, the ability to attach a file without

It’s true—Dropbox and HTC are teaming up to give users 5GB of free space. Starting now, anyone running Sense 3.5 will get an additional 3GB of space in their Dropbox account, on top of the free 2GB that everyone gets when signing up. Of course, the number of people who are actually using Sense 3.5 is limited; it currently only runs on the HTC Rhyme, sold by Verizon. Soon it’ll also run on the HTC Sensation XL, available next month in Europe, according to HTC Global Communications Manager Jeff Gordon. As for when owners of older HTC handsets can get their hands on some sweet, sweet cloud-based digital storage action, they’ll have to wait until the company announces which other phones will eventually get the Sense 3.5 upgrade. (MORE: Encryption: How to Keep Secret Files in the Cloud) You could be seeing Android’s answer to Apple’s iCloud, a way for users to share and sync information with their home computers and tablets, increasingly important as more and more people use their phones to take video and photos at higher resolutions. What does Dropbox get out of all this? The hope is that once users get hooked on 5GB of storage, they’ll want to upgrade to the 50GB ($9.99/month) and 100GB ($19.99/month) plans. While the 5GB trial was initially rumored to last only 12 months, Dropbox told me that the amount of time that users will get the upgrade hasn’t been determined yet. Dropbox will come preinstalled on all new HTC phones; those with older phones can always download the app for free. It’ll be interesting to see how Dropbox’s partnership will play out with Android overall, especially considering the rumored coming of Google Drive, which would compete directly with both Dropbox and iCloud.
Although a Google-based online storage service has been rumored and internally tested for years, Google may finally have a version of the so-called “Google Drive” that’s ready for public use. Johannes Wigand, a social media consultant, spotted a screenshot of what appears to be a “Google Drive” during a presentation at a Google-sponsored event. It looks like a rebranded version of Google Docs, which already includes free storage for any type of file. But if TechCrunch’s additional rumormongering is accurate, Google Drive might actually be bigger deal, even in the midst of competing services like Dropbox. (MORE: A Virtual Storage Locker For Google Docs) Here’s why: Google Drive could be integrated with Android TechCrunch’s MG Siegler speculates that Google could be holding up the launch of Google Drive for the next version of Android, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s a plausible theory given that Apple’s iCloud and Microsoft’s SkyDrive will bring online storage to iOS and Windows Phones, respectively. Google loves the idea of doing everything online, so the company won’t want to be left behind on cloud storage. Imagine a service that could store documents, photos and other data and make it accessible on Android phones and PCs. That’d be pretty useful. Google Drive could be integrated with Chrome OS Chrome OS, the web-based operating system that Google launched this year, is broken as a concept without online storage that replaces the need for local files. Although you can use third-party storage solutions with Chrome OS, they’re not really a part of the operating system. You can’t, for instance, upload a photo from Box.net directly to a photo editing web app like Pixlr. Instead, you’ve got to download it to temporary local storage first, then re-upload it. An online drive that acted like a local file browser would eliminate this step for users while ensuring all files remain online. Google-based data needs a repository Between Gmail, Google Docs and Picasa, users of Google products already store a lot of data online. What I’d really like to see from Google Drive
