Google just released the new version of its popular RSS reader, Google Reader, and the Internet is, well, not too happy about it. The online petition to bring back the old Reader currently has more than 9,000 signatures. The Twitterverse is a cacophony of Google Reader hate. At this rate, it won’t be long before angry techies are burning Google Reader effigies in the street. So, how bad is the new Reader? Not bad at all, actually. Most of the animus comes from fans of the old sharing system. People already had their networks set up, with which they could share and comment on each other’s stories, using whatever username they wanted. (WATCH: How Google+ Works) Now? All of that will be done through Google+. It certainly does seem like Google is trying to jam its social network down our throats. When Spotify made the decision to force people to sign up through Facebook to share playlists, users were livid. This has the same feel. The actual act of +1-ing and sharing stories with your Google+ social circles is fairly seamless and intuitive. The problem is (speaking from personal experience), most of my friends and I have Google+, we just don’t use it that much. Instead we use this nifty little social networking site called “Facebook.” And now Google wants to force us to switch? So, yes, it’s easy to understand the “Sharebros” rage. Still, sharing on Google Reader was a dead end, beloved by hardcore users, but perhaps confusing to newcomers. If you were a loyal Google+ user (which, obviously, Google is hoping to create more of), the idea of creating a new network and sharing stories would seem redundant; why not just click the +1 button you’re used to and share it with your friends? It might be annoying to longtime users, but in the end, it was probably the right move for Google, especially if it brings new people to both Google+ and Google Reader. As for the design, it’s hard to find fault with the new look.
It’s taken a few months, but Google+ is finally rolling out its version of Twitter’s “trending topics” feature, with the somewhat unimaginative title of “What’s Hot.” But the truly interesting new feature introduced is Ripples, which visualizes how things get shared across the burgeoning network. Both features were introduced via the official Google blog yesterday, with What’s Hot described as “a new place to visit for interesting and unexpected content” outside of the personal filter provided by friends and family already included in your Circles. “Sometimes you want to know what the world is so excited about,” explained SVP of Engineering Vic Gundotra. (MORE: Google: U.S. Gov’t, Police Make More Requests for Private Data in 2011) Something that’s closer to actually being exciting is Ripples, which Gundotra wrote was a way to “help people re-live… conversations – both to rekindle that initial excitement, and to learn how posts flow across the network.” The “still experimental” feature allows you to view the activity around any public Google + post, purely by selecting “View Ripples.” Check out the above video to see how it works. Google also introduced the Google+ Creative Kit—a limited photo-edit software within the network—and the ability to access Google+ for all Google Apps customers in yesterday’s announcements. Google+ may remain the social network that most people have already forgotten exists, but it’s clearly trying hard to change that.
Everyone’s favorite Twitter clone that never really went anywhere is being put to sleep sometime in the next few weeks. Google Buzz was launched in February of 2010, immediately ran into trouble for opting every Gmail user into the service, and ended up paying out an $8.5 million settlement later that year. It’s seen a lot of hoopla for a service nobody uses, in other words. And then there’s Google+, which now pretty well makes Buzz completely irrelevant. Says Google: “In a few weeks we’ll shut down Google Buzz and the Buzz API, and focus instead on Google+. While people obviously won’t be able to create new posts after that, they will be able to view their existing content on their Google Profile, and download it using Google Takeout… …Changing the world takes focus on the future, and honesty about the past. We learned a lot from products like Buzz, and are putting that learning to work every day in our vision for products like Google+. Our users expect great things from us; today’s announcements let us focus even more on giving them something truly awesome.” While we likely won’t see any measurable outrage over Buzz’s closure, Google’s also closing down Code Search, Jaiku, iGoogle’s social features, Google Labs, and the University Research Program for Google Search if you want to try to find something in the list to get whipped up about. Other than that, the old “fail fast” adage appears to be alive and well.
